Relativizing characterizations of Anosov subgroups, I

We propose several common extensions of the classes of Anosov subgroups and geometrically finite Kleinian groups among discrete subgroups of semisimple Lie groups. We relativize various dynamical and coarse geometric characterizations of Anosov subgroups given in our earlier work, extending the class from intrinsically hyperbolic to relatively hyperbolic subgroups. We prove implications and equivalences between the various relativizations.

Effective bounds for Vinberg's algorithm for arithmetic hyperbolic lattices

A group of isometries of a hyperbolic $n$-space is called a reflection group if it is generated by reflections in hyperbolic hyperplanes. Vinberg gave a semi-algorithm for finding a maximal reflection sublattice in a given arithmetic subgroup of $O(n,1)$ of the simplest type. We provide an effective termination condition for Vinberg's semi-algorithm with which it becomes an algorithm for finding maximal reflection sublattices. The main new ingredient of the proof is an upper bound for the number of faces of an arithmetic hyperbolic Coxeter polyhedron in terms of its volume.

Patterson-Sullivan theory for Anosov subgroups

We extend several notions and results from the classical Patterson-Sullivan theory to the setting of Anosov subgroups of higher rank semisimple Lie groups, working primarily with invariant Finsler metrics on associated symmetric spaces. In particular, we prove the equality between the Hausdorff dimensions of flag limit sets, computed with respect to a suitable Gromov (pre-)metric on the flag manifold, and the Finsler critical exponents of Anosov subgroups.

On quasihomomorphisms with noncommutative targets

We describe structure of quasihomomorphisms from arbitrary groups to discrete groups. We show that all quasihomomorphisms are 'constructible', i.e., are obtained via certain natural operations from homomorphisms to some groups and quasihomomorphisms to abelian groups. We illustrate this theorem by describing quasihomomorphisms to certain classes of groups. For instance, every unbounded quasihomomorphism to a torsion-free hyperbolic group H is either a homomorphism to a subgroup of H or is a quasihomomorphism to an infinite cyclic subgroup of H.

Morse actions of discrete groups on symmetric space

We study the geometry and dynamics of discrete infinite covolume subgroups of higher rank semisimple Lie groups. We introduce and prove the equivalence of several conditions, capturing "rank one behavior'' of discrete subgroups of higher rank Lie groups. They are direct generalizations of rank one equivalents to convex cocompactness. We also prove that our notions are equivalent to the notion of Anosov subgroup, for which we provide a closely related, but simplified and more accessible reformulation, avoiding the geodesic flow of the group. We show moreover that the Anosov condition can be relaxed further by requiring only non-uniform unbounded expansion along the (quasi)geodesics in the group. A substantial part of the paper is devoted to the coarse geometry of these discrete subgroups. A key concept which emerges from our analysis is that of Morse quasigeodesics in higher rank symmetric spaces, generalizing the Morse property for quasigeodesics in Gromov hyperbolic spaces. It leads to the notion of Morse actions of word hyperbolic groups on symmetric spaces,i.e. actions for which the orbit maps are Morse quasiisometric embeddings, and thus provides a coarse geometric characterization for the class of subgroups considered in this paper. A basic result is a local-to-global principle for Morse quasigeodesics and actions. As an application of our techniques we show algorithmic recognizability of Morse actions and construct Morse "Schottky subgroups'' of higher rank semisimple Lie groups via arguments not based on Tits' ping-pong. Our argument is purely geometric and proceeds by constructing equivariant Morse quasiisometric embeddings of trees into higher rank symmetric spaces.

Fundamental groups of links of isolated singularities

We study fundamental groups of projective varieties with normal crossing singularities and of germs of complex singularities. We prove that for every finitely-presented group G there is a complex projective surface S with simple normal crossing singularities only, so that the fundamental group of S is isomorphic to G. We use this to construct 3-dimensional isolated complex singularities so that the fundamental group of the link is isomorphic to G. Lastly, we prove that a finitely-presented group G is Q-superperfect (has vanishing rational homology in dimensions 1 and 2) if and only if G is isomorphic to the fundamental group of the link of a rational 6-dimensional complex singularity.

Ideal triangles in Euclidean buildings and branching to Levi subgroups

We introduce the notion of ideal triangle in the Bruhat-Tits building associated to a split group -- it is analogous to the usual notion of triangle, but one vertex is "at infinity" in a certain direction. We prove that the algebraic variety of based ideal triangles with prescribed side-lengths is naturally isomorphic to a suitable variety of genuine triangles. From theorems pertaining to genuine triangles, we deduce saturation theorems related to branching to Levi subgroups and to the constant term homomorphisms.

Stability inequalities and universal Schubert calculus of rank 2

The goal of the paper is to introduce a version of Schubert calculus for each dihedral reflection group W. That is, to each "sufficiently rich'' spherical building Y of type W we associate a certain cohomology theory and verify that, first, it depends only on W (i.e., all such buildings are "homotopy equivalent'') and second, the cohomology ring is the associated graded of the coinvariant algebra of W under certain filtration. We also construct the dual homology "pre-ring'' of Y. The convex "stability'' cones defined via these (co)homology theories of Y are then shown to solve the problem of classifying weighted semistable m-tuples on Y in the sense of Kapovich, Leeb and Millson equivalently, they are cut out by the generalized triangle inequalities for thick Euclidean buildings with the Tits boundary Y. Quite remarkably, the cohomology ring is obtained from a certain universal algebra A by a kind of "crystal limit'' that has been previously introduced by Belkale-Kumar for the cohomology of flag varieties and Grassmannians. Another degeneration of A leads to the homology theory of Y.

Triangle inequalities in path metric spaces

We study side-lengths of triangles in path metric spaces. We prove that unless such a space X is bounded, or quasi-isometric to line or half-line, every triple of real numbers satisfying the strict triangle inequalities, is realized by the side-lengths of a triangle in X. We construct an example of a complete path metric space quasi-isometric to the Euclidean plane, for which every degenerate triangle has one side which is shorter than a certain uniform constant.
