An eigenvalue problem for self-similar patterns in Hele-Shaw flows

Hele-Shaw problems are prototypes to study the interface dynamics. Linear theory suggests the existence of self-similar patterns in a Hele-Shaw flow. That is, with a specific injection flux the interface shape remains unchanged while its size increases. In this paper, we explore the existence of self-similar patterns in the nonlinear regime and develop a rigorous nonlinear theory characterizing their fundamental features. Using a boundary integral formulation, we pose the question of self-similarity as a generalized nonlinear eigenvalue problem, involving two nonlinear integral operators. The flux constant $C$ is the eigenvalue and the corresponding self-similar pattern $\mathbf{x}$ is the eigenvector. We develop a quasi-Newton method to solve the problem and show the existence of nonlinear shapes with $k$-fold dominated symmetries. The influence of initial guesses on the self-similar patterns is investigated. We are able to obtain a desired self-similar shape once the initial guess is properly chosen. Our results go beyond the predictions of linear theory and establish a bridge between the linear theory and simulations.

Fourier neural operator based fluid-structure interaction for predicting the vesicle dynamics

Solving complex fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems, characterized by nonlinear partial differential equations, is crucial in various scientific and engineering applications. Traditional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solvers are insufficient to meet the growing requirements for large-scale and long-period simulations. Fortunately, the rapid advancement in neural networks, especially neural operator learning mappings between function spaces, has introduced novel approaches to tackle these challenges via data-driven modeling. In this paper, we propose a Fourier neural operator-based fluid-structure interaction solver (FNO-based FSI solver) for efficient simulation of FSI problems, where the solid solver based on the finite difference method is seamlessly integrated with the Fourier neural operator to predict incompressible flow using the immersed boundary method. We analyze the performance of the FNO-based FSI solver in the following three situations: training data with or without the steady state, training method with one-step label or multi-step labels, and prediction in interpolation or extrapolation. We find that the best performance for interpolation is achieved by training the operator with multi-step labels using steady-state data. Finally, we train the FNO-based FSI solver using this optimal training method and apply it to vesicle dynamics. The results show that the FNO-based FSI solver is capable of capturing the variations in the fluid and the vesicle.

Mixture of Virtual-Kernel Experts for Multi-Objective User Profile Modeling

In industrial applications like online advertising and recommendation systems, diverse and accurate user profiles can greatly help improve personalization. Deep learning is widely applied to mine expressive tags to users from their historical interactions in the system, e.g., click, conversion action in the advertising chain. The usual approach is to take a certain action as the objective, and introduce multiple independent Two-Tower models to predict the possibility of users' action on tags (known as CTR or CVR prediction). The predicted users' high probably attractive tags are to represent their preferences. However, the single-action models cannot learn complementarily and support effective training on data-sparse actions. Besides, limited by the lack of information fusion between the two towers, the model learns insufficiently to represent users' preferences on various tag \textbf{topics} well. This paper introduces a novel multi-task model called Mixture of Virtual-Kernel Experts (MVKE) to learn user preferences on various actions and topics unitedly. In MVKE, we propose a concept of Virtual-Kernel Expert, which focuses on modeling one particular facet of the user's preferences, and all of them learn coordinately. Besides, the gate-based structure used in MVKE builds an information fusion bridge between two towers, improving the model's capability and maintaining high efficiency. We apply the model in Tencent Advertising System, where both online and offline evaluations show that our method has a significant improvement compared with the existing ones and brings about an obvious lift to actual advertising revenue.

Online multiscale model reduction for nonlinear stochastic PDEs with multiplicative noise

In this paper, an online multiscale model reduction method is presented for stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with multiplicative noise, where the diffusion coefficient is spatially multiscale and the noise perturbation nonlinearly depends on the diffusion dynamics. It is necessary to efficiently compute all possible trajectories of the stochastic dynamics for quantifying model's uncertainty and statistic moments. The multiscale diffusion and nonlinearity may cause the computation intractable. To overcome the multiscale difficulty, a constraint energy minimizing generalized multiscale finite element method (CEM-GMsFEM) is used to localize the computation and obtain an effective coarse model. However, the nonlinear terms are still defined on a fine scale space after the Galerkin projection of CEM-GMsFEM is applied to the nonlinear SPDEs. This significantly impacts on the simulation efficiency by CEM-GMsFEM. To this end, a stochastic online discrete empirical interpolation method (DEIM) is proposed to treat the stochastic nonlinearity. The stochastic online DEIM incorporates offline snapshots and online snapshots. The offline snapshots consist of the nonlinear terms at the approximate mean of the stochastic dynamics and are used to construct an offline reduced model. The online snapshots contain some information of the current new trajectory and are used to correct the offline reduced model in an increment manner. The stochastic online DEIM substantially reduces the dimension of the nonlinear dynamics and enhances the prediction accuracy for the reduced model. Thus, the online multiscale model reduction is constructed by using CEM-GMsFEM and the stochastic online DEIM. A priori error analysis is carried out for the nonlinear SPDEs. We present a few numerical examples with diffusion in heterogeneous porous media and show the effectiveness of the proposed model reduction.

Ruleformer: Context-aware Differentiable Rule Mining over Knowledge Graph

Rule mining is an effective approach for reasoning over knowledge graph (KG). Existing works mainly concentrate on mining rules. However, there might be several rules that could be applied for reasoning for one relation, and how to select appropriate rules for completion of different triples has not been discussed. In this paper, we propose to take the context information into consideration, which helps select suitable rules for the inference tasks. Based on this idea, we propose a transformer-based rule mining approach, Ruleformer. It consists of two blocks: 1) an encoder extracting the context information from subgraph of head entities with modified attention mechanism, and 2) a decoder which aggregates the subgraph information from the encoder output and generates the probability of relations for each step of reasoning. The basic idea behind Ruleformer is regarding rule mining process as a sequence to sequence task. To make the subgraph a sequence input to the encoder and retain the graph structure, we devise a relational attention mechanism in Transformer. The experiment results show the necessity of considering these information in rule mining task and the effectiveness of our model.

Integrated and Spectrally Selective Thermal Emitters Enabled by Layered Metamaterials

Nanophotonic engineering of light-matter interaction at subwavelength scale allows thermal radiation that is fundamentally different from that of traditional thermal emitters and provides exciting opportunities for various thermal-photonic applications. We propose a new kind of integrated and electrically controlled thermal emitter that exploits layered metamaterials with lithography-free and dielectric/metallic nanolayers. We demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that the proposed concept can create a strong photonic bandgap in the visible regime and allow small impedance mismatch at the infrared wavelengths, which gives rise to optical features of significantly enhanced emissivity at the broad infrared wavelengths of 1.4-14 um as well as effectively suppressed emissivity in the visible region. The electrically driven metamaterial devices are optically and thermally stable at temperature up to ~800 K with electro-optical conversion efficiency reaching ~30%. We believe that the proposed high efficiency thermal emitters will pave the way towards integrated infrared light source platforms for various thermal-photonic applications and particularly provide a novel alternative for cost-effective, compact, low glare, and energy-efficient infrared heating.

Nonlinear limiting dynamics of a shrinking interface in a Hele-Shaw cell

The flow in a Hele-Shaw cell with a time-increasing gap poses a unique shrinking interface problem. When the upper plate of the cell is lifted perpendicularly at a prescribed speed, the exterior less viscous fluid penetrates the interior more viscous fluid, which generates complex, time-dependent interfacial patterns through the Saffman-Taylor instability. The pattern formation process sensitively depends on the lifting speed and is still not fully understood. For some lifting speeds, such as linear or exponential speed, the instability is transient and the interface eventually shrinks as a circle. However, linear stability analysis suggests there exist shape invariant shrinking patterns if the gap $b(t)$ is increased more rapidly: $\displaystyle b(t)=\left(1-\frac{7}{2}τ\mathcal{C} t\right)^{-{2}/{7}}$, where $τ$ is the surface tension and $\mathcal{C}$ is a function of the interface perturbation mode $k$. Here, we use a spectrally accurate boundary integral method together with an efficient time adaptive rescaling scheme, which for the first time makes it possible to explore the nonlinear limiting dynamical behavior of a vanishing interface. When the gap is increased at a constant rate, our numerical results quantitatively agree with experimental observations (Nase et al., Phys. Fluids, vol. 23, 2011, pp. 123101). When we use the shape invariant gap $b(t)$, our nonlinear results reveal the existence of $k$-fold dominant, one-dimensional, web-like networks, where the fractal dimension is reduced to almost one at late times. We conclude by constructing a morphology diagram for pattern selection that relates the dominant mode $k$ of the vanishing interface and the control parameter $\mathcal{C}$.

LDPC Codes Based on the Space of Symmetric Matrices over Finite Fields

In this paper, we present a new method for explicitly constructing regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes based on $\mathbb{S}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$, the space of $n\times n$ symmetric matrices over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. Using this method, we obtain two classes of binary LDPC codes, $\cal{C}(n,q)$ and $\cal{C}^{T}(n,q)$, both of which have grith $8$. Then both the minimum distance and the stopping distance of each class are investigated. It is shown that the minimum distance and the stopping distance of $\cal{C}^{T}(n,q)$ are both $2q$. As for $\cal{C}(n,q)$, we determine the minimum distance and the stopping distance for some special cases and obtain the lower bounds for other cases.

Towards a Job Title Classification System

Document classification for text, images and other applicable entities has long been a focus of research in academia and also finds application in many industrial settings. Amidst a plethora of approaches to solve such problems, machine-learning techniques have found success in a variety of scenarios. In this paper we discuss the design of a machine learning-based semi-supervised job title classification system for the online job recruitment domain currently in production at CareerBuilder.com and propose enhancements to it. The system leverages a varied collection of classification as well clustering algorithms. These algorithms are encompassed in an architecture that facilitates leveraging existing off-the-shelf machine learning tools and techniques while keeping into consideration the challenges of constructing a scalable classification system for a large taxonomy of categories. As a continuously evolving system that is still under development we first discuss the existing semi-supervised classification system which is composed of both clustering and classification components in a proximity-based classifier setup and results of which are already used across numerous products at CareerBuilder. We then elucidate our long-term goals for job title classification and propose enhancements to the existing system in the form of a two-stage coarse and fine level classifier augmentation to construct a cascade of hierarchical vertical classifiers. Preliminary results are presented using experimental evaluation on real world industrial data.

Reliable design of an integrated supply chain with expedited shipments under disruption risks

This paper proposes a mathematical model for the design of a two-echelon supply chain where a set of suppliers serve a set of terminal facilities that receive uncertain customer demands. This model integrates a number of system decisions in both the planning and operational stages, including facility location, multi-level service assignments, multi-modal transportation configuration, and inventory management. In particular, we consider probabilistic supplier disruptions that may halt product supply from certain suppliers from time to time. To mitigate the impact from supplier disruptions, a terminal facility may be assigned to multiple supplies that back up each other with different service priorities. With such multi-level service assignments, even when some suppliers are disrupted, a facility may still be supplied by the remaining functioning suppliers. Expensive expedited shipments yet with assured fast delivery may be used in complement to less expensive regular shipments yet with uncertain long lead times. Combining these two shipment modes can better leverage the inventory management against uncertain demands. We formulate this problem into a mix-integer nonlinear program that simultaneously determines all these interdependent system decisions to minimize the expected system cost under uncertainties from both suppliers and demands. A customized solution algorithm based on the Lagrangian relaxation is developed to efficiently solve this model. Several numerical examples are conduced to test the proposed model and draw managerial insights into how the key parameters affect the optimal system design.

Development of a radio-detection method array for the observation of ultra-high energy neutrino induced showers

The recent demonstration by the CODALEMA Collaboration of the ability of the radio-detection technique for the characterization of UHE cosmic-rays calls for the use of this powerful method for the observation of UHE neutrinos. For this purpose, an adaptation of the existing 21CM Array (China) is presently under achievment. In an exceptionally low electromagnetic noise level, 10160 log-periodic 50-200 MHz antennas sit along two high valleys, surrounded by mountain chains. This lay-out results in 30-60 km effective rock thicnesses for neutrino interactions with low incidence trajectories along the direction of two 4-6 km baselines. We will present first in-situ radio measurements demonstrating that this environment shows particularly favourable conditions for the observation of electromagnetic decay signals of taus originating from the interaction of 10^17-20 eV tau neutrinos.
