Algebraic functional equation for big Galois representations over multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions

We present a general approach to establish algebraic functional equations for big Galois representations over multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions. Our result is formulated in both Selmer group and Selmer complex settings, and encompasses a broad range of Iwasawa-theoretic scenarios. In particular, our result applies to the triple product of Hida families in both balanced and unbalanced cases, as well as the half-ordinary Rankin-Selberg universal deformations recently studied by the first named author and Loeffler. Our result also significantly generalizes many previously known cases of algebraic functional equations and answers a question of Greenberg.

On order of vanishing of characteristic elements

Let $p$ be a fixed odd prime. Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field with either good ordinary reduction or multiplicative reduction at each prime of $F$ above $p$. We shall study the characteristic element of the Selmer group of $E$ over a $p$-adic Lie extension. In particular, we relate the order of vanishing of these characteristic element evaluated at Artin representations to the Selmer coranks and their twists in the intermediate subextensions of the $p$-adic Lie extension.

Mordell-Weil ranks and Tate-Shafarevich groups of elliptic curves with mixed-reduction type over cyclotomic extensions

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $K$ where $p$ splits completely. Suppose that $E$ has good reduction at all primes above $p$. Generalizing previous works of Kobayashi and Sprung, we define multiply signed Selmer groups over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a finite extension $F$ of $K$ where $p$ is unramified. Under the hypothesis that the Pontryagin duals of these Selmer groups are torsion over the corresponding Iwasawa algebra, we show that the Mordell-Weil ranks of $E$ over a subextension of the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension are bounded. Furthermore, we derive an aysmptotic formula of the growth of the $p$-parts of the Tate-Shafarevich groups of $E$ over these extensions.

On fine Selmer groups and signed Selmer groups of elliptic modular forms

Let $f$ be an elliptic modular form and $p$ an odd prime that is coprime to the level of $f$. We study the link between divisors of the characteristic ideal of the $p$-primary fine Selmer group of $f$ over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$ extension of $\mathbb{Q}$ and the greatest common divisor of signed Selmer groups attached to $f$ defined using the theory of Wach modules. One of the key ingredients of our proof is a generalization of a result of Wingberg on the structure of fine Selmer groups of abelian varieties with supersingular reduction at $p$ to the context of modular forms.

On the cohomology of Kobayashi's plus/minus norm groups and applications

The plus and minus norm groups are constructed by Kobayashi as subgroups of the formal group of an elliptic curve with supersingular reduction, and they play an important role in Kobayashi's definition of the signed Selmer groups. In this paper, we study the cohomology of these plus and minus norm groups. In particular, we show that these norm groups are cohomologically trivial. As an application of our analysis, we establish certain (quasi-)projectivity properties of the non-primitive mixed signed Selmer groups of an elliptic curve with good reduction at all primes above $p$. We then build on these latter projectivity results to derive a Kida formula for the signed Selmer groups, and study the integrality property of the characteristic element attached to the signed Selmer groups.

Akashi series and Euler characteristics of signed Selmer groups of elliptic curves with semistable reduction at primes above p

Let $p$ be an odd prime number, and let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $F'$ such that $E$ has semistable reduction at every prime of $F'$ above $p$ and is supersingular at at least one prime above $p$. Under appropriate hypotheses, we compute the Akashi series of the signed Selmer groups of $E$ over a $\mathbb{Z}_p^d$-extension over a finite extension $F$ of $F'$. As a by-product, we also compute the Euler characteristics of these Selmer groups.

On the control theorem for fine Selmer groups and the growth of fine Tate-Shafarevich groups in $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions

Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $F$. We prove a control theorem for the fine Selmer group of the abelian variety $A$ which essentially says that the kernel and cokernel of the natural restriction maps in a given $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $F_\infty/F$ are finite and bounded. We emphasise that our result does not have any constraints on the reduction of $A$ and the ramification of $F_\infty/F$. As a first consequence of the control theorem, we show that the fine Tate-Shafarevich group over an arbitrary $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension has trivial $Λ$-corank. We then derive an asymptotic growth formula for the $p$-torsion subgroup of the dual fine Selmer group in a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension. However, as the fine Mordell-Weil group needs not be $p$-divisible in general, the fine Tate-Shafarevich group needs not agree with the $p$-torsion of the dual fine Selmer group, and so the asymptotic growth formula for the dual fine Selmer groups do not carry over to the fine Tate-Shafarevich groups. Nevertheless, we do provide certain sufficient conditions, where one can obtain a precise asymptotic formula.

On the growth of even $K$-groups of rings of integers in $p$-adic Lie extensions

Let $p$ be an odd prime number. In this paper, we study the growth of the Sylow $p$-subgroups of the even $K$-groups of rings of integers in a $p$-adic Lie extension. Our results generalize previous results of Coates and Ji-Qin, where they considered the situation of a cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension. Our method of proof differs from these previous work. Their proof relies on an explicit description of certain Galois group via Kummer theory afforded by the context of a cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension, whereas our approach is via considering the Iwasawa cohomology groups with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}_p(i)$ for $i\geq 2$. We should mention that this latter approach is possible thanks to the Quillen-Lichtenbaum Conjecture which is now known to be valid by the works of Rost-Voevodsky. We also note that the approach allows us to work with more general $p$-adic Lie extensions that do not necessarily contain the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension, where the Kummer theoretical approach does not apply. Along the way, we study the torsionness of the second Iwasawa cohomology groups with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}_p(i)$ for $i\geq 2$. Finally, we give examples of $p$-adic Lie extensions, where the second Iwasawa cohomology groups can have nontrivial $μ$-invariants.

On the signed Selmer groups of congruent elliptic curves with semistable reduction at all primes above $p$

Let $p$ be an odd prime. We attach appropriate signed Selmer groups to an elliptic curve $E$, where $E$ is assumed to have semistable reduction at all primes above $p$. We then compare the Iwasawa $λ$-invariants of these signed Selmer groups for two congruent elliptic curves over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension in the spirit of Greenberg-Vatsal and B. D. Kim. As an application of our comparsion formula, we show that if the $p$-parity conjecture is true for one of the congruent elliptic curves, then it is also true for the other elliptic curve. In the midst of proving this latter result, we also generalize an observation of Hatley on the parity of the signed Selmer groups.

On the weak Leopoldt conjecture and coranks of Selmer groups of supersingular abelian varieties in $p$-adic Lie extensions

Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a number field $F$ with supersingular reduction at all primes of $F$ above $p$. We establish an equivalence between the weak Leopoldt conjecture and the expected value of the corank of the classical Selmer group of $A$ over a $p$-adic Lie extension (not neccesasily containing the cyclotomic $\Zp$-extension). As an application, we obtain the exactness of the defining sequence of the Selmer group. In the event that the $p$-adic Lie extension is one-dimensional, we show that the dual Selmer group has no nontrivial finite submodules. Finally, we show that the aforementioned conclusions carry over to the Selmer group of a non-ordinary cuspidal modular form.

On the algebraic functional equation of the eigenspaces of mixed signed Selmer groups of elliptic curves with good reduction at primes above $p$

Let $p$ be an odd prime number, and let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field which has good reduction at every prime above $p$. Under suitable assumptions, we prove that the $η$-eigenspace and the $\barη$-eigenspace of mixed signed Selmer group of the elliptic curve are pseudo-isomorphic. As a corollary, we show that the $η$-eigenspace is trivial if and only if the $\barη$-eigenspace is trivial. Our results can be thought as a reflection principle which relate an Iwasawa module in a given eigenspace with another Iwasawa module in a "reflected" eigenspace.

On the Euler characteristics of signed Selmer groups

Let $p$ be an odd prime number, and $E$ an elliptic curve defined over a number field with good reduction at every prime of $F$ above $p$. In this short note, we compute the Euler characteristics of the signed Selmer groups of $E$ over the cyclotomic $\Zp$-extension. The novelty of our result is that we allow the elliptic curve to have mixed reduction types for primes above $p$ and that we allow mixed signs in the definition of the signed Selmer groups.

Fine Selmer groups of congruent Galois representations

In this paper, we study the fine Selmer groups of two congruent Galois representations over an admissible $p$-adic Lie extension. We show that under appropriate congruence conditions, if the dual fine Selmer group of one is pseudo-null, so is the other. Our results also compare the $π$-primary submodules of the two dual fine Selmer groups. We then apply our results to compare the structure of Galois group of the maximal abelian unramified pro-$p$ extension of an admissible $p$-adic Lie extension and the structure of the dual fine Selmer group over the said admissible $p$-adic Lie extension.

Comparing the $π$-primary submodules of the dual Selmer groups

In this paper, we compare the structure of Selmer groups of certain classes of Galois representations over an admissible $p$-adic Lie extension. Namely, we show that the $π$-primary submodules of the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer groups of two Galois representations have the same elementary representations when the two Galois representations in question are either Tate dual to each other or are congruent to each other. In the first situation, our result gives a partial answer to the question of Greenberg on whether the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer groups of two Galois representations that are Tate dual to each other are pseudo-isomorphic (up to a twist of the Iwasawa algebra). In the second situation, our result will be applied to study the variation of the $π$-primary submodules of the dual Selmer groups of certain specialization of a big Galois representation. One of the important ingredient in our proofs is an asymptotic formula for $π$-primary modules over a noncommutative Iwasawa algebra which can be viewed as a generalization of a weak analog of the classical Iwasawa asymptotic formula.

Akashi series, characteristic elements and congruence of Galois representations

In this paper, we compare the Akashi series of the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer groups of two Galois representations over a strongly admissible p-adic Lie extension. Namely, we show that whenever the two Galois representations in question are congruent to each other, the Akashi series of one is a unit if and only if the Akashi series of the other is also a unit. We will also obtain similar results for the Euler characteristics of the Selmer groups and the characteristic elements attached to the Selmer groups.

Comparing the Selmer group of a $p$-adic representation and the Selmer group of the Tate dual of the representation

The main conjecture of Iwasawa theory is a conjecture on the relation between a Selmer group and a conjectural $p$-adic $L$-function. This conjectural $p$-adic $L$-function is expected to satisfy a conjectural functional equation in a certain sense. In view of the main conjecture and this conjectural functional equation, one would expect to have certain algebraic relationship between the Selmer group attached to a Galois representation and the Selmer group attached to the Tate twist of the dual of the Galois representation. It is precisely a component of this algebraic relationship that this paper aims to investigate. Namely, for a given "ordinary" $p$-adic representation, we compare its Selmer group with the Selmer group of its Tate dual over an admissible $p$-adic Lie extension, and show that the generalized Iwasawa $μ$-invariants associated to the Pontryagin dual of the two said Selmer groups are the same. We should mention that in proving the said equality of the $μ$-invariants, we do not assume the main conjecture nor the conjectural functional equation.

Notes on the fine Selmer groups

In this paper, we study the fine Selmer groups attached to a Galois module defined over a commutative complete Noetherian ring with finite residue field of characteristic p. Namely, we are interested in its properties upon taking residual representation and within field extensions. In particular, we will show that the variation of the fine Selmer group in a cyclotomic $\Zp$-extension is intimately related to the variation of the class groups in the cyclotomic tower. We also discuss some examples of pseudo-nullity of fine Selmer groups.

On completely faithful Selmer groups of elliptic curves and Hida deformations

In this paper, we study completely faithful torsion $\mathbb{Z}_p[[G]]$-modules with applications to the study of Selmer groups. Namely, if $G$ is a nonabelian group belonging to certain classes of polycyclic pro-$p$ group, we establish the abundance of faithful torsion $\mathbb{Z}_p[[G]]$-modules, i.e., non-trivial torsion modules whose global annihilator ideal is zero. We then show that such $\mathbb{Z}_p[[G]]$-modules occur naturally in arithmetic, namely in the form of Selmer groups of elliptic curves and Selmer groups of Hida deformations. It is interesting to note that faithful Selmer groups of Hida deformations do not seem to appear in literature before. We will also show that faithful Selmer groups have various arithmetic properties. Namely, we show that faithfulness is an isogeny invariant, and we prove "control theorem" results on the faithfulness of Selmer groups over a general admissible $p$-adic Lie extension.

On the pseudo-nullity of the dual fine Selmer groups

In this paper, we will study the pseudo-nullity of the fine Selmer group and its related question. Namely, we investigate certain situations, where one can deduce the pseudo-nullity of the dual fine Selmer group of a general Galois module over a admissible $p$-adic Lie extension $F_{\infty}$ from the knowledge that pseudo-nullity of the Galois group of the maximal abelian unramified pro-$p$ extension of $F_{\infty}$ at which every prime of $F_{\infty}$ above $p$ splits completely. In particular, this gives us a way to construct examples of the pseudo-nullity of the dual fine Selmer group of a Galois module that is unramified outside $p$. We will illustrate our results with many examples.

A remark on the $\mathfrak{M}_H(G)$-conjecture and Akashi series

In this article, we give a criterion for the dual Selmer group of an elliptic curve which has either good ordinary reduction or multiplicative reduction at every prime above $p$ to satisfy the $\M_H(G)$-conjecture. As a by-product of our calculations, we are able to define the Akashi series of the dual Selmer groups assuming the conjectures of Mazur and Schneider. Previously, the Akashi series are defined under the stronger assumption that the dual Selmer group satisfies the $\M_H(G)$-conjecture. We then establish a criterion for the vanishing of the dual Selmer groups using the Akashi series. We will apply this criterion to prove some results on the characteristic elements of the dual Selmer groups. Our methods in this paper are inspired by the work of Coates-Schneider-Sujatha and can be extended to the Greenberg Selmer groups attached to other ordinary representations, for instance, those coming from an $p$-ordinary modular form.

Nekovar duality over p-adic Lie extensions of global fields

Poitou-Tate duality for the Galois group of an extension of a global field with appropriately restricted ramification can be seen as taking place between the cohomology of a compact or discrete module and the compactly-supported cohomology of its Pontryagin dual. Nekovar proved a derived variant of this in which the module is replaced by a bounded complex of modules over the group ring of R that are finitely generated over R, where R is a complete commutative local Noetherian ring with finite residue field. Here, the Pontryagin dual is replaced by the Grothendieck dual, which is itself a bounded complex of modules with finitely generated cohomology. Nekovar's duality then takes place in the derived category of R-modules. We extend Nekovar's result to the setting of noncommutative Iwasawa theory. That is, we exhibit a duality between complexes computing Iwasawa cohomology and its compactly supported variant in the derived category of finitely generated modules over the Iwasawa algebra over R of a p-adic Lie extension.
