Reciprocity maps with restricted ramification

We compare two maps that arise in study of the cohomology of number fields with ramification restricted to a finite set S of primes. One of these maps, which we call an S-reciprocity map, interpolates the values of cup products in S-ramified cohomology. In the case of p-ramified cohomology of the pth cyclotomic field for an odd prime p, we use this to exhibit an intriguing relationship between particular values of the cup product on cyclotomic p-units. We then consider higher analogues of the S-reciprocity map and relate their cokernels to the graded quotients in augmentation filtrations of Iwasawa modules.

Nekovar duality over p-adic Lie extensions of global fields

Poitou-Tate duality for the Galois group of an extension of a global field with appropriately restricted ramification can be seen as taking place between the cohomology of a compact or discrete module and the compactly-supported cohomology of its Pontryagin dual. Nekovar proved a derived variant of this in which the module is replaced by a bounded complex of modules over the group ring of R that are finitely generated over R, where R is a complete commutative local Noetherian ring with finite residue field. Here, the Pontryagin dual is replaced by the Grothendieck dual, which is itself a bounded complex of modules with finitely generated cohomology. Nekovar's duality then takes place in the derived category of R-modules. We extend Nekovar's result to the setting of noncommutative Iwasawa theory. That is, we exhibit a duality between complexes computing Iwasawa cohomology and its compactly supported variant in the derived category of finitely generated modules over the Iwasawa algebra over R of a p-adic Lie extension.

Galois module structure of local unit groups

We study the groups in the unit filtration of a finite abelian extension K of the field of p-adic numbers. We determine explicit generators of these groups as modules over the pro-p group ring of the Galois group of K over the p-adic numbers. We work in eigenspaces for powers of the Teichmueller character, first at the level of the field of norms for the extension of K by p-power roots of unity and then at the level of K.

The reciprocity conjecture of Khare and Wintenberger

We prove a strengthening of the "reciprocity conjecture" of Khare and Wintenberger. The input to the original conjecture is an odd prime p, a CM number field F containing the pth roots of unity, and a pair of primes of the maximal totally real subfield E of F that are inert in the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of E. In analogy to a statement about generalized Jacobians of curves, the conjecture asserts the equality of two procyclic subgroups of the Galois group G of the maximal p-ramified abelian pro-p extension of E. The first is the intersection of the subgroup of G fixing the cyclotomic Z_p-extension with the closed subgroup of G generated by the two primes. The second is generated by the class of an exact sequence defining the minus part of the p-part of the ray class group of the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of F of conductor the product of the two primes of E.

A reciprocity map and the two variable p-adic L-function

For primes p greater than 3, we propose a conjecture that relates the values of cup products in the Galois cohomology of the maximal unramified outside p extension of a cyclotomic field on cyclotomic p-units to the values of p-adic L-functions of cuspidal eigenforms that satisfy mod p congruences with Eisenstein series. Passing up the cyclotomic and Hida towers, we construct an isomorphism of certain spaces that allows us to compare the value of a reciprocity map on a particular norm compatible system of p-units to what is essentially the two-variable p-adic L-function of Mazur and Kitagawa.
