Broadband high-resolution integrated spectrometer architecture & data processing method

Up-to-date network telemetry is the key enabler for resource optimization by capacity scaling, fault recovery, and network reconfiguration among other means. Reliable optical performance monitoring in general and, specifically, the monitoring of the spectral profile of WDM signals in fixed- and flex- grid architectures across the entire C-band, remains challenging. This article describes a two-stage spectrometer architecture amenable to integration on a single chip that can measure quantitatively the spectrum across the entire C-band with a resolution of 1 GHz approximately. The first stage consists of a ring resonator with intra-ring phase shifter to provide a tuneable fine filter. The second stage makes use of an AWG subsystem and novel processing algorithm to synthesize a tuneable coarse filter with a flat passband which isolates individual resonances of a multiplicity of ring resonances. Due to its maturity and low loss, CMOS compatible Si$_3$N$_4$ is chosen for integration. A fabricated ring resonator functioning over the entire C-band with 1.3 GHz FWHM bandwidth resonances tunable over a complete free spectral range of 50 GHz is experimentally demonstrated. The complete system operation is demonstrated using an industry standard simulation tool and AWG constructor data. The operation of the circuit is invariant to the optical path length between individual components substantially improving robustness to fabrication process variations.

Controlled Dropout for Uncertainty Estimation

Uncertainty quantification in a neural network is one of the most discussed topics for safety-critical applications. Though Neural Networks (NNs) have achieved state-of-the-art performance for many applications, they still provide unreliable point predictions, which lack information about uncertainty estimates. Among various methods to enable neural networks to estimate uncertainty, Monte Carlo (MC) dropout has gained much popularity in a short period due to its simplicity. In this study, we present a new version of the traditional dropout layer where we are able to fix the number of dropout configurations. As such, each layer can take and apply the new dropout layer in the MC method to quantify the uncertainty associated with NN predictions. We conduct experiments on both toy and realistic datasets and compare the results with the MC method using the traditional dropout layer. Performance analysis utilizing uncertainty evaluation metrics corroborates that our dropout layer offers better performance in most cases.

Experimental realization of a universal RF photonic integrated circuit

This paper demonstrates the operation of a universal RF photonic circuit that consists of a generalized Mach Zehnder Interferometer architecture with its Nx1 combiner replaced by a NxN optical DFT network. The proposed circuit architecture can be used for SSB modulation, frequency up-conversion/down-conversion, frequency multiplication and phase correlated subcarrier generation based on the choice of output ports and dimension (N) of the circuit. An alternative representation of the circuit is also reported with the aim of a systematic demultiplexing. A transfer matrix approach is used to develop the theoretical predictions which are verified by simulation using industry standard software tool. An integrated circuit based on silicon photonics technology readily available in the laboratory is used for experimental confirmation.

Optical Wavelength Meter with Machine Learning Enhanced Precision

Diverse applications in photonics and microwave engineering require a means of measurement of the instantaneous frequency of a signal. A photonic implementation typically applies an interferometer equipped with three or more output ports to measure the frequency dependent phase shift provided by an optical delay line. The components constituting the interferometer are prone to impairments which results in erroneous measurements. It is shown that the information to be retrieved is encoded by a three-component vector that lies on a circular cone within a three-dimensional Cartesian object space. The measured data belongs to the image of the object space under a linear map that describes the action of the interferometer. Assisted by a learning algorithm, an inverse map from the image space into the object space is constructed. The inverse map compensates for a variety of impairments while being robust to noise. Simulation results demonstrate that, to the extent the interferometer model captures all significant impairments, a precision limited only by the level of random noise is attainable. A wavelength meter architecture is fabricated on Si3N4 photonic integration platform to prove the method experimentally. Applied to the measured data, greater than an order of magnitude improvement in precision is achieved by the proposed method compared to the conventional method.

Injection Locking of Optoelectronic Oscillators with Large Delay

The optoelectronic oscillator is a delay line oscillator that leverages optical fiber technology to realize the large delay required for low phase noise systems. Spurious sidemodes are an artifact of the delay line oscillator, yet treatments of injection locking of optoelectronic oscillators have relied on the application of classical injection locking theory valid only for single mode oscillators. The large delay contributed by the optical fiber delay line is accounted for by classical theory only in part through the quality factor Q that captures the round-trip group delay in a neighborhood of the oscillation frequency. This paper presents a new formulation of time delay oscillators subject to injection that describes all the essential features of their dynamics and phase noise. The common assumptions of a single mode oscillator and weak injection are removed. This is important to correctly predict the locking range, the suppression of sidemodes and the phase noise spectrum. The findings of the analysis are validated by experimental measurements provided by an optoelectronic oscillator under injection by an external source.

Photonics probing of DNA specific spatial mass density fluctuations in gut cell nuclei due to total body irradiation via confocal imaging

Abnormalities within cells result in nanoscale structural alterations can be characterized via confocal imaging and quantification of these alterations. Accidental or deliberate exposure to total body irradiation (TBI) have adverse effects on the nuclear DNAs of cells. Here, we study the DNA molecular mass density spatial structural alterations of chromatin in cell nuclei of gut tissues caused by the exposure to standard doses of 4Gy TBI, using the light localization technique called inverse participation ratio (IPR) in confocal images. Results indicate radiation suppresses DNA spatial mass density fluctuations. And hence, reduction and saturation in DNA density fluctuations are observed for different durations of post-irradiation.

Saturation magnetization and band gap tuning in BiFeO$_3$ nanoparticles via co-substitution of Gd and Mn

In this investigation, Gd and Mn co-doped Bi$_{0.85}$Gd$_{0.15}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$O$_3$ (x=0.0-0.15) nanoparticles have been prepared to report the influence of co-substitution on their structural, optical, magnetic and electrical properties. Due to simultaneous substitution of Gd and Mn in BiFeO$_3$, the crystal structure has been modified from rhombohedral (R3c) to orthorhombic (Pn21a) and the Fe-O-Fe bond angle and Fe-O bond length have been changed. For Mn doping up to 10 % in Bi$_{0.85}$Gd$_{0.15}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$O$_3$ nanoparticles, the saturation magnetization (Ms) has been enhanced significantly, however, for a further increase of doping up to 15 %, the Ms has started to reduce again. The co-substitution of Gd and Mn in BiFeO$_3$ nanoparticles also demonstrates a strong reduction in the optical band gap energy and electrical resistivity compared to that of undoped BiFeO$_3$.

Size dependent magnetic and electrical properties of Ba-doped nanocrystalline BiFeO$_3$

Improvement in magnetic and electrical properties of multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ in conjunction with their dependence on particle size is crucial due to its potential applications in multifunctional miniaturized devices. In this investigation, we report a study on particle size dependent structural, magnetic and electrical properties of sol-gel derived Bi$_{0.9}$Ba$_{0.1}$FeO$_3$ nanoparticles of different sizes ranging from $\sim$ 12 to 49 nm. The substitution of Bi by Ba significantly suppresses oxygen vacancies, reduces leakage current density and Fe$^{2+}$ state. An improvement in both magnetic and electrical properties is observed for 10 % Ba-doped BiFeO$_3$ nanoparticles compared to its undoped counterpart. The saturation magnetization of Bi$_{0.9}$Ba$_{0.1}$FeO$_3$ nanoparticles increase with reducing particle size in contrast with a decreasing trend of ferroelectric polarization. Moreover, a first order metamagnetic transition is noticed for $\sim$ 49 nm Bi$_{0.9}$Ba$_{0.1}$FeO$_3$ nanoparticles which disappeared with decreasing particle size. The observed strong size dependent multiferroic properties are attributed to the complex interaction between vacancy induced crystallographic defects, multiple valence states of Fe, uncompensated surface spins, crystallographic distortion and suppression of spiral spin cycloid of BiFeO$_3$.

Core-shell multilayered nanoparticles: giant photonic density of states coupled to the far-field

We present a quantum theoretical treatment of light-matter coupling in the system consisting of a quantum dot and a spherical core-shell metal-dielectric multilayer nanoparticle. It is shown that both weak and strong coupling regimes can be realized in the set-up. Specifically, we demonstrate a strong coupling regime between a quantum dot and a nanoparticle, when the quantum dot resonance is tuned to the frequency at which normal component of effective nanoparticle permittivity is crossing zero. Moreover, we demonstrate the regime at which the quantum dot decays much faster than in vacuum (due to the large Purcell factor) and at the same time radiates more power to the far field. This findings pave the way towards more efficient control over radiation properties of quantum emitters.

Diamagnetism in wire medium metamaterials: theory and experiment

Strong diamagnetic response of wire medium with finite wire radius is reported. Contrary to the previous works where it was assumed that the wire medium exhibits only the electric response, we show that the non-zero magnetic susceptibility has to be taken into account for proper effective medium description of the wire medium. Analytical and numerical results are supported by the experimental measurements.
