Torus fixed point sets of Hessenberg Schubert varieties in regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties

It is well-known that the $T$-fixed points of a Schubert variety in the flag variety $GL_n(\mathbb{C})/B$ can be characterized purely combinatorially in terms of Bruhat order on the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. In a recent preprint, Cho, Hong, and Lee give a combinatorial description of the $T$-fixed points of Hessenberg analogues of Schubert varieties (which we call Hessenberg Schubert varieties) in a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety. This note gives an interpretation of their result in terms of Bruhat order by making use of a partition of the symmetric group defined using so-called subsets of Weyl type. The Appendix, written by Michael Zeng, proves a lemma concerning subsets of Weyl type which is required in our arguments.

Toward permutation bases in the equivariant cohomology rings of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties

Recent work of Shareshian and Wachs, Brosnan and Chow, and Guay-Paquet connects the well-known Stanley-Stembridge conjecture in combinatorics to the dot action of the symmetric group $S_n$ on the cohomology rings $H^*(Hess(S,h))$ of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties. In particular, in order to prove the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture, it suffices to construct (for any Hessenberg function $h$) a permutation basis of $H^*(Hess(S,h))$ whose elements have stabilizers isomorphic to Young subgroups. In this manuscript we give several results which contribute toward this goal. Specifically, in some special cases, we give a new, purely combinatorial construction of classes in the $T$-equivariant cohomology ring $H^*_T(Hess(S,h))$ which form permutation bases for subrepresentations in $H^*_T(Hess(S,h))$. Moreover, from the definition of our classes it follows that the stabilizers are isomorphic to Young subgroups. Our constructions use a presentation of the $T$-equivariant cohomology rings $H^*_T(Hess(S,h))$ due to Goresky, Kottwitz, and MacPherson. The constructions presented in this manuscript generalize past work of Abe-Horiguchi-Masuda, Chow, and Cho-Hong-Lee.

Virtual resolutions of points in $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$

We explore explicit virtual resolutions, as introduced by Berkesch, Erman, and Smith, for ideals of sets of points in $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$. Specifically, we describe a virtual resolution for a sufficiently general set of points $X$ in $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$ that only depends on $|X|$. We also improve an existence result of Berkesch, Erman, and Smith in the special case of points in $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$; more precisely, we give an effective bound for their construction that gives a virtual resolution of length two for any set of points in $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$.

Geometry of Hessenberg varieties with applications to Newton-Okounkov bodies

In this paper, we study the geometry of various Hessenberg varieties in type A, as well as families thereof, with the additional goal of laying the groundwork for future computations of Newton-Okounkov bodies of Hessenberg varieties. Our main results are as follows. We find explicit and computationally convenient generators for the local defining ideals of indecomposable regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties, and then show that all regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties are local complete intersections. We also show that certain families of Hessenberg varieties, whose generic fibers are regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties and the special fiber is a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety, are flat and have reduced fibres. This result further allows us to give a computationally effective formula for the degree of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety with respect to a Plücker embedding. Furthermore, we construct certain flags of subvarieties of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety, obtained by intersecting with Schubert varieties, which are suitable for computing Newton-Okounkov bodies. As an application of our results, we explicitly compute many Newton-Okounkov bodies of the two-dimensional Peterson variety with respect to Plücker embeddings.

A filtration on the cohomology rings of regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties

Let $n$ be a positive integer. The main result of this manuscript is a construction of a filtration on the cohomology ring of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety in $GL(n,{\mathbb{C}})/B$ such that its associated graded ring has graded pieces (i.e., homogeneous components) isomorphic to rings which are related to the cohomology rings of Hessenberg varieties in $GL(n-1,{\mathbb{C}})/B$, showing the inductive nature of these rings. In previous work, the first two authors, together with Abe and Masuda, gave an explicit presentation of these cohomology rings in terms of generators and relations. We introduce a new set of polynomials which are closely related to the relations in the above presentation and obtain a sequence of equivalence relations they satisfy; this allows us to derive our filtration. In addition, we obtain the following three corollaries. First, we give an inductive formula for the Poincaré polynomial of these varieties. Second, we give an explicit monomial basis for the cohomology rings of regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties with respect to the presentation mentioned above. Third, we derive a basis of the set of linear relations satisfied by the images of the Schubert classes in the cohomology rings of regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties. Finally, our methods and results suggest many directions for future work; in particular, we propose a definition of "Hessenberg Schubert polynomials" in the context of regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties, and outline several open questions pertaining to them.

Integrable systems, toric degenerations and Okounkov bodies

Let X be a smooth complex projective variety of dimension n equipped with a very ample Hermitian line bundle L. In the first part of the paper, we show that if there exists a toric degeneration of X satisfying some natural hypotheses (which are satisfied in many settings), then there exists a completely integrable system on X in the sense of symplectic geometry. More precisely, we construct a collection of real-valued functions H_1, ... H_n on X which are continuous on all of X, smooth on an open dense subset U of X, and pairwise Poisson-commute on U. Moreover, we show that in many cases, we can construct the integrable system so that the functions H_1, ..., H_n generate a Hamiltonian torus action on U. In the second part, we show that the toric degenerations arising in the theory of Newton-Okounkov bodies satisfy all the hypotheses of the first part of the paper. In this case the image of the "moment map" μ= (H_1, ..., H_n): X to R^n is precisely the Okounkov body Δ= Δ(R, v) associated to the homogeneous coordinate ring R of X, and an appropriate choice of a valuation v on R. Our main technical tools come from algebraic geometry, differential (Kaehler) geometry, and analysis. Specifically, we use the gradient-Hamiltonian vector field, and a subtle generalization of the famous Lojasiewicz gradient inequality for real-valued analytic functions. Since our construction is valid for a large class of projective varieties X, this manuscript provides a rich source of new examples of integrable systems. We discuss concrete examples, including elliptic curves, flag varieties of arbitrary connected complex reductive groups, spherical varieties, and weight varieties.

The equivariant $K$-theory and cobordism rings of divisive weighted projective spaces

We apply results of Harada, Holm and Henriques to prove that the Atiyah-Segal equivariant complex $K$-theory ring of a divisive weighted projective space (which is singular for nontrivial weights) is isomorphic to the ring of integral piecewise Laurent polynomials on the associated fan. Analogues of this description hold for other complex-oriented equivariant cohomology theories, as we confirm in the case of homotopical complex cobordism, which is the universal example. We also prove that the Borel versions of the equivariant $K$-theory and complex cobordism rings of more general singular toric varieties, namely those whose integral cohomology is concentrated in even dimensions, are isomorphic to rings of appropriate piecewise formal power series. Finally, we confirm the corresponding descriptions for any smooth, compact, projective toric variety, and rewrite them in a face ring context. In many cases our results agree with those of Vezzosi and Vistoli for algebraic $K$-theory, Anderson and Payne for operational $K$-theory, Krishna and Uma for algebraic cobordism, and Gonzalez and Karu for operational cobordism; as we proceed, we summarize the details of these coincidences.

Grossberg-Karshon twisted cubes and hesitant walk avoidance

Let $G$ be a complex semisimple simply connected linear algebraic group. Let $λ$ be a dominant weight for $G$ and $\mathcal{I} = (i_1, i_2, \ldots, i_n)$ a word decomposition for an element $w = s_{i_1} s_{i_2} \cdots s_{i_n}$ of the Weyl group of $G$, where the $s_i$ are the simple reflections. In the 1990s, Grossberg and Karshon introduced a virtual lattice polytope associated to $λ$ and $\mathcal{I}$, which they called a twisted cube, whose lattice points encode (counted with sign according to a density function) characters of representations of $G$. In recent work, the first author and Jihyeon Yang prove that the Grossberg-Karshon twisted cube is untwisted (so the support of the density function is a closed convex polytope) precisely when a certain torus-invariant divisor on a toric variety, constructed from the data of $λ$ and $\mathcal{I}$, is basepoint-free. This corresponds to the situation in which the Grossberg-Karshon character formula is a true combinatorial formula in the sense that there are no terms appearing with a minus sign. In this note, we translate this toric-geometric condition to the combinatorics of $\mathcal{I}$ and $λ$. More precisely, we introduce the notion of hesitant $λ$-walks and then prove that the associated Grossberg-Karshon twisted cube is untwisted precisely when $\mathcal{I}$ is hesitant-$λ$-walk-avoiding.

Inertia groups of a toric DM stack, fake weighted projective spaces, and labelled sheared simplices

This paper determines the inertia groups (isotropy groups) of the points of a toric Deligne-Mumford stack [Z/G] (considered over the category of smooth manifolds) that is realized from a quotient construction using a stacky fan or stacky polytope. The computation provides an explicit correspondence between certain geometric and combinatorial data. In particular, we obtain a computation of the connected component of the identity element $G_0 \subset G$ and the component group $G/G_0$ in terms of the underlying stacky fan, enabling us to characterize the toric DM stacks which are global quotients. As another application, we obtain a characterization of those stacky polytopes that yield stacks equivalent to weighted projective stacks and, more generally, to `fake' weighted projective stacks. Finally, we illustrate our results in detail in the special case of labelled sheared simplices, where explicit computations can be made in terms of the facet labels.

The equivariant cohomology rings of regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties in Lie type A: a research announcement

Let $n$ be a fixed positive integer and $h: \{1,2,...,n\} \rightarrow \{1,2,...,n\}$ a Hessenberg function. The main result of this manuscript is to give a systematic method for producing an explicit presentation by generators and relations of the equivariant and ordinary cohomology rings (with $\mathbb{Q}$ coefficients) of any regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mathrm{Hess}(h)$ in type A. Specifically, we give an explicit algorithm, depending only on the Hessenberg function $h$, which produces the $n$ defining relations $\{f_{h(j),j}\}_{j=1}^n$ in the equivariant cohomology ring. Our result generalizes known results: for the case $h=(2,3,4,...,n,n)$, which corresponds to the Peterson variety $\mathrm{Pet}_n$, we recover the presentation of $H^*_S(\mathrm{Pet}_n)$ given previously by Fukukawa, Harada, and Masuda. Moreover, in the case $h=(n,n,...,n)$, for which the corresponding regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety is the full flag variety $\mathrm{Flags}(\mathbb{C}^n)$, we can explicitly relate the generators of our ideal with those in the usual Borel presentation of the cohomology ring of $\mathrm{Flags}(\mathbb{C}^n)$. The proof of our main theorem includes an argument that the restriction homomorphism $H^*_T(\mathrm{Flags}(\mathbb{C}^n)) \to H^*_S(\mathrm{Hess}(h))$ is surjective. In this research announcement, we briefly recount the context and state our results; we also give a sketch of our proofs and conclude with a brief discussion of open questions. A manuscript containing more details and full proofs is forthcoming.

A Giambelli formula for the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of type A Peterson varieties

The main result of this note is a Giambelli formula for the Peterson Schubert classes in the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring of a type $A$ Peterson variety. Our results depend on the Monk formula for the equivariant structure constants for the Peterson Schubert classes derived by Harada and Tymoczko. In addition, we give proofs of two facts observed by H. Naruse: firstly, that some constants which appear in the multiplicative structure of the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of Peterson varieties are Stirling numbers of the second kind, and secondly, that the Peterson Schubert classes satisfy a stability property in a sense analogous to the stability of the classical equivariant Schubert classes in the $T$-equivariant cohomology of the flag variety.

Global quotients among toric Deligne-Mumford stacks

This work characterizes global quotient stacks---smooth stacks associated to a finite group acting a manifold---among smooth quotient stacks $[M/G]$, where $M$ is a smooth manifold equipped with a smooth proper action by a Lie group $G$. The characterization is described in terms of the action of the connected component $G_0$ on $M$ and is related to (stacky) fundamental group and covering theory. This characterization is then applied to smooth toric Deligne-Mumford stacks, and global quotients among toric DM stacks are then characterized in terms of their associated combinatorial data of stacky fans.

The equivariant cohomology rings of Peterson varieties

The main result of this note is an efficient presentation of the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring of Peterson varieties (in type $A$) as a quotient of a polynomial ring by an ideal $\mathcal{J}$, in the spirit of the well-known Borel presentation of the cohomology of the flag variety. Our result simplifies previous presentations given by Harada-Tymoczko and Bayegan-Harada. In particular, our result gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Bayegan and Harada that the defining ideal $\mathcal{J}$ is generated by quadratics.

The module structure of the equivariant K-theory of the based loop group of SU(2)

Let $G=SU(2)$ and let $ΩG$ denote the space of based loops in SU(2). We explicitly compute the $R(G)$-module structure of the topological equivariant $K$-theory $K_G^*(ΩG)$ and in particular show that it is a direct product of copies of $K^*_G(\pt) \cong R(G)$. (We intend to describe in detail the $R(G)$-algebra (i.e. product) structure of $K^*_G(ΩG)$ in a forthcoming companion paper.) Our proof uses the geometric methods for analyzing loop spaces introduced by Pressley and Segal (and further developed by Mitchell). However, Pressley and Segal do not explicitly compute equivariant $K$-theory and we also need further analysis of the spaces involved since we work in the equivariant setting. With this in mind, we have taken this opportunity to expand on the original exposition of Pressley-Segal in the hope that in doing so, both our results and theirs would be made accessible to a wider audience.

Localization for equivariant cohomology with varying polarization

The main contribution of this paper is a generalization of several previous localization theories in equivariant symplectic geometry, including the classical Atiyah-Bott/Berline-Vergne localization theorem, as well as many cases of the localization via the norm-square of the momentum map as initiated and developed by Witten, Paradan, and Woodward. Our version unifies and generalizes these theories by using noncompact cobordisms as in previous work of Guillemin, Ginzburg, and Karshon, and by introducing a more flexible notion of `polarization' than in previous theories. Our localization formulas are also valid for closed 2-forms that may be degenerate. As a corollary, we are able to answer a question posed some time ago by Shlomo Sternberg concerning the classical Brianchon-Gram polytope decomposition,. We illustrate our theory using concrete examples motivated by our answer to Sternberg's question.

Torsion in the full orbifold K-theory of abelian symplectic quotients

Let (M,ω,Φ) be a Hamiltonian T-space and let H be a closed Lie subtorus of T. Under some technical hypotheses on the moment map Φ, we prove that there is no additive torsion in the integral full orbifold K-theory of the orbifold symplectic quotient [M//H]. Our main technical tool is an extension to the case of moment map level sets the well-known result that components of the moment map of a Hamiltonian T-space M are Morse-Bott functions on M. As first applications, we conclude that a large class of symplectic toric orbifolds, as well as certain S^1-quotients of GKM spaces, have integral full orbifold K-theory that is free of additive torsion. Finally, we introduce the notion of semilocally Delzant which allows us to formulate sufficient conditions under which the hypotheses of the main theorem hold. We illustrate our results using low-rank coadjoint orbits of type A and B.

Poset pinball, highest forms, and (n-2,2) Springer varieties

We study type $A$ nilpotent Hessenberg varieties equipped with a natural $S^1$-action using techniques introduced by Tymoczko, Harada-Tymoczko, and Bayegan-Harada, with a particular emphasis on a special class of nilpotent Springer varieties corresponding to the partition $λ= (n-2,2)$ for $n \geq 4$. First we define the adjacent-pair matrix corresponding to any filling of a Young diagram with $n$ boxes with the alphabet $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Using the adjacent-pair matrix we make more explicit and also extend some statements concerning highest forms of linear operators in previous work of Tymoczko. Second, for a nilpotent operator $N$ and Hessenberg function $h$, we construct an explicit bijection between the $S^1$-fixed points of the nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\Hess(N,h)$ and the set of $(h,λ_N)$-permissible fillings of the Young diagram $λ_N$. Third, we use poset pinball, the combinatorial game introduced by Harada and Tymoczko, to study the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of type $A$ Springer varieties $\mathcal{S}_{(n-2,2)}$ associated to Young diagrams of shape $(n-2,2)$ for $n\geq 4$. Specifically, we use the dimension pair algorithm for Betti-acceptable pinball described by Bayegan and Harada to specify a subset of the equivariant Schubert classes in the $T$-equivariant cohomology of the flag variety $\mathcal{F}\ell ags(\C^n)$ which maps to a module basis of $H^*_{S^1}(\mathcal{S}_{(n-2,2)})$ under the projection $H^*_T(\mathcal{F}\ell ags(\C^n)) \to H^*_{S^1}(\mathcal{S}_{(n-2,2)})$. Our pinball module basis is not poset-upper-triangular; this is the first concrete such example in the literature. A consequence of our proof is that there exists a simple and explicit change of basis which transforms our basis to a poset-upper-triangular module basis for $H^*_{S^1}(\mathcal{S}_{(n-2,2)})$. We close with open questions for future work.

Divided differences and the Weyl character formula in equivariant K-theory

Let $X$ be a topological space and $G$ a compact connected Lie group acting on $X$. Atiyah proved that the $G$-equivariant K-group of $X$ is a direct summand of the $T$-equivariant K-group of $X$, where $T$ is a maximal torus of $G$. We show that this direct summand is equal to the subgroup of $K_T^*(X)$ annihilated by certain divided difference operators. If $X$ consists of a single point, this assertion amounts to the Weyl character formula. We also give sufficient conditions on $X$ for $K_G^*(X)$ to be isomorphic to the subgroup of Weyl invariants of $K_T^*(X)$.

Morse theory of the moment map for representations of quivers

The results of this paper concern the Morse theory of the norm-square of the moment map on the space of representations of a quiver. We show that the gradient flow of this function converges, and that the Morse stratification induced by the gradient flow co-incides with the Harder-Narasimhan stratification from algebraic geometry. Moreover, the limit of the gradient flow is isomorphic to the graded object of the Harder-Narasimhan-Jordan-Hölder filtration associated to the initial conditions for the flow. With a view towards applications to Nakajima quiver varieties we construct explicit local co-ordinates around the Morse strata and (under a technical hypothesis on the stability parameter) describe the negative normal space to the critical sets. Finally, we observe that the usual Kirwan surjectivity theorems in rational cohomology and integral K-theory carry over to this non-compact setting, and that these theorems generalize to certain equivariant contexts.

Poset pinball, GKM-compatible subspaces, and Hessenberg varieties

This paper has three main goals. First, we set up a general framework to address the problem of constructing module bases for the equivariant cohomology of certain subspaces of GKM spaces. To this end we introduce the notion of a GKM-compatible subspace of an ambient GKM space. We also discuss poset-upper-triangularity, a key combinatorial notion in both GKM theory and more generally in localization theory in equivariant cohomology. With a view toward other applications, we present parts of our setup in a general algebraic and combinatorial framework. Second, motivated by our central problem of building module bases, we introduce a combinatorial game which we dub poset pinball and illustrate with several examples. Finally, as first applications, we apply the perspective of GKM-compatible subspaces and poset pinball to construct explicit and computationally convenient module bases for the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of all Peterson varieties of classical Lie type, and subregular Springer varieties of Lie type $A$. In addition, in the Springer case we use our module basis to lift the classical Springer representation on the ordinary cohomology of subregular Springer varieties to $S^1$-equivariant cohomology in Lie type $A$.

Poset pinball, the dimension pair algorithm, and type A regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties

In this manuscript we develop the theory of poset pinball, a combinatorial game recently introduced by Harada and Tymoczko for the study of the equivariant cohomology rings of GKM-compatible subspaces of GKM spaces. Harada and Tymoczko also prove that in certain circumstances, a successful outcome of Betti poset pinball yields a module basis for the equivariant cohomology ring of the GKM-compatible subspace. Our main contributions are twofold. First we construct an algorithm (which we call the dimension pair algorithm) which yields the result of a successful outcome of Betti poset pinball for any type $A$ regular nilpotent Hessenberg and any type $A$ nilpotent Springer variety, considered as GKM-compatible subspaces of the flag variety $\Flags(\C^n)$. The definition of the algorithm is motivated by a correspondence between Hessenberg affine cells and certain Schubert polynomials which we learned from Erik Insko. Second, in the special case of the type $A$ regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties specified by the Hessenberg function $h(1)=h(2)=3$ and $h(i) = i+1$ for $3 \leq i \leq n-1$ and $h(n)=n$, we prove that the pinball result coming from the dimension pair algorithm is poset-upper-triangular; by results of Harada and Tymoczko this implies the corresponding equivariant cohomology classes form a $H^*_{S^1}(\pt)$-module basis for the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring of the Hessenberg variety.

A positive Monk formula in the S^1-equivariant cohomology of type A Peterson varieties

Peterson varieties are a special class of Hessenberg varieties that have been extensively studied e.g. by Peterson, Kostant, and Rietsch, in connection with the quantum cohomology of the flag variety. In this manuscript, we develop a generalized Schubert calculus, and in particular a positive Chevalley-Monk formula, for the ordinary and Borel-equivariant cohomology of the Peterson variety $Y$ in type $A_{n-1}$, with respect to a natural $S^1$-action arising from the standard action of the maximal torus on flag varieties. As far as we know, this is the first example of positive Schubert calculus beyond the realm of Kac-Moody flag varieties $G/P$. Our main results are as follows. First, we identify a computationally convenient basis of $H^*_{S^1}(Y)$, which we call the basis of Peterson Schubert classes. Second, we derive a manifestly positive, integral Chevalley-Monk formula for the product of a cohomology-degree-2 Peterson Schubert class with an arbitrary Peterson Schubert class. Both $H^*_{S^1}(Y)$ and $H^*(Y)$ are generated in degree 2. Finally, by using our Chevalley-Monk formula we give explicit descriptions (via generators and relations) of both the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring $H^*_{S^1}(Y)$ and the ordinary cohomology ring $H^*(Y)$ of the type $A_{n-1}$ Peterson variety. Our methods are both directly from and inspired by those of GKM (Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson) theory and classical Schubert calculus. We discuss several open questions and directions for future work.
