Geometric quantization of b-symplectic manifolds

We introduce a method of geometric quantization for compact $b$-symplectic manifolds in terms of the index of an Atiyah-Patodi-Singer (APS) boundary value problem. We show further that b-symplectic manifolds have canonical Spin-c structures in the usual sense, and that the APS index above coincides with the index of the Spin-c Dirac operator. We show that if the manifold is endowed with a Hamiltonian action of a compact connected Lie group with non-zero modular weights, then this method satisfies the Guillemin-Sternberg ``quantization commutes with reduction'' property. In particular our quantization coincides with the formal quantization defined by Guillemin, Miranda and Weitsman, providing a positive answer to a question posed in their paper.

Callias-type operators in von Neumann algebras

We study differential operators on complete Riemannian manifolds which act on sections of a bundle of finite type modules over a von Neumann algebra with a trace. We prove a relative index and a Callias-type index theorems for von Neumann indexes of such operators. We apply these results to obtain a version of Atiyah's $L^2$-index theorem, which states that the index of a Callias-type operator on a non-compact manifold $M$ is equal to the $Γ$-index of its lift to a Galois cover of $M$. We also prove the cobordism invariance of the index of Callias-type operators. In particular, we give a new proof of the cobordism invariance of the von Neumann index of operators on compact manifolds.

Cobordism Invariance of the Index of Callias-Type Operators

We introduce a notion of cobordism of Callias-type operators over complete Riemannian manifolds and prove that the index is preserved by such a cobordism. As an application we prove a gluing formula for Callias-type index. In particular, a usual index of an elliptic operator on a compact manifold can be computed as a sum of indexes of Callias-type operators on two non-compact, but topologically simpler manifolds. As another application we give a new proof of the relative index theorem for Callias-type operators, which also leads to a new proof of the Callias index theorem.

Spectral theory of von Neumann algebra valued differential operators over non-compact manifolds

We provide criteria for self-adjointness and τ-Fredhomness of first and second order differential operators acting on sections of infinite dimensional bundles, whose fibers are modules of finite type over a von Neumann algebra A endowed with a trace τ. We extend the Callias-type index to operators acting on sections of such bundles and show that this index is stable under compact perturbations.

The index theory on non-compact manifolds with proper group action

We construct a regularized index of a generalized Dirac operator on a complete Riemannian manifold endowed with a proper action of a unimodular Lie group. We show that the index is preserved by a certain class of non-compact cobordisms and prove a gluing formula for the regularized index. The results of this paper generalize our previous construction of index for compact group action and the recent paper of Mathai and Hochs who studied the case of a Hamiltonian action on a symplectic manifold. As an application of the cobordism invariance of the index we give an affirmative answer to a question of Mathai and Hochs about the independence of the Mathai-Hochs quantization of the metric, connection and other choices.

Cohomology of a Hamiltonian T-space with involution

Let $M$ be a compact symplectic manifold on which a compact torus $T$ acts Hamiltonialy with a moment map $μ$. Suppose there exists a symplectic involution $θ:M\to M$, such that $μ\circθ=-μ$. Assuming that 0 is a regular value of $μ$, we calculate the trace of the action of $θ$ on the cohomology of $M$ in terms of the trace of the action of $θ$ on the symplectic reduction $μ^{-1}(0)/T$ of $M$. This result generalizes a theorem of R. Stanley, who considered the case when $M$ was a toric variety.

A new proof of a Bismut-Zhang formula for some class of representations

Bismut and Zhang computed the ratio of the Ray-Singer and the combinatorial torsions corresponding to non-unitary representations of the fundamental group. In this note we show that for representations which belong to a connected component containing a unitary representation the Bismut-Zhang formula follows rather easily from the Cheeger-Mueller theorem, i.e. from the equality of the two torsions on the set of unitary representations. The proof uses the fact that the refined analytic torsion is a holomorphic function on the space of representations.

Background cohomology of a non-compact Kahler G-manifold

For a compact Lie group G we define a regularized version of the Dolbeault cohomology of a G-equivariant holomorphic vector bundles over non-compact Kahler manifolds. The new cohomology is infinite-dimensional, but as a representation of G it decomposes into a sum of irreducible components, each of which appears in it with finite multiplicity. Thus equivariant Betti numbers are well defined. We study various properties of the new cohomology and prove that it satisfies a Kodaira-type vanishing theorem.

Index Theory of Non-compact $G$-manifolds

The index theorem, discovered by Atiyah and Singer in 1963, is one of most important results in the twentieth century mathematics. It found numerous applications in analysis, geometry and physics. Since it was discovered numerous attempts to generalize it were made, see for example [5, 3, 4, 16, 12] to mention a few; some of these generalizations gave rise to new very productive areas of mathematics. In this lectures we first review the classical Atiyah-Singer index theorem and its generalization to so called transversally elliptic operators (Atiyah, 1974) due to Atiyah and Singer. Then we discuss the recent developments aimed at generalization of the index theorem for transversally elliptic operators to non-compact manifolds, [24, 10].

Refined Analytic Torsion as an Element of the Determinant Line

We construct a canonical element, called the refined analytic torsion, of the determinant line of the cohomology of a closed oriented odd-dimensional manifold M with coefficients in a flat complex vector bundle E. We compute the Ray-Singer norm of the refined analytic torsion. In particular, if there exists a flat Hermitian metric on E, we show that this norm is equal to 1. We prove a duality theorem, establishing a relationship between the refined analytic torsions corresponding to a flat connection and its dual.

Topological calculation of the phase of the determinant of a non self-adjoint elliptic operator

We study the zeta-regularized determinant of a non self-adjoint elliptic operator on a closed odd-dimensional manifold. We show that, if the spectrum of the operator is symmetric with respect to the imaginary axis, then the determinant is real and its sign is determined by the parity of the number of the eigenvalues of the operator, which lie on the positive part of the imaginary axis. It follows that, for many geometrically defined operators, the phase of the determinant is a topological invariant. In numerous examples, coming from geometry and physics, we calculate the phase of the determinants in purely topological terms. Some of those examples were known in physical literature, but no mathematically rigorous proofs and no general theory were available until now.

Essential self-adjointness of Schroedinger type operators on manifolds

We obtain several essential self-adjointness conditions for a Schroedinger type operator D*D+V acting in sections of a vector bundle over a manifold M. Here V is a locally square-integrable bundle map. Our conditions are expressed in terms of completeness of certain metrics on M; these metrics are naturally associated to the operator. We do not assume a priori that M is endowed with a complete Riemannian metric. This allows us to treat e.g. operators acting on bounded domains in the euclidean space. For the case when the principal symbol of the operator is scalar, we establish more precise results. The proofs are based on an extension of the Kato inequality which modifies and improves a result of Hess, Schrader and Uhlenbrock.

Symplectic cutting of Kaehler manifolds

We obtain estimates on the character of the cohomology of an $S^1$-equivariant holomorphic vector bundle over a Kaehler manifold $M$ in terms of the cohomology of the Lerman symplectic cuts and the symplectic reduction of $M$. In particular, we prove and extend inequalities conjectured by Wu and Zhang. The proof is based on constructing a flat family of complex spaces $M_t$ such that $M_t$ is isomorphic to $M$ for $t\not=0$, while $M_0$ is a singular reducible complex space, whose irreducible components are the Lerman symplectic cuts.

Novikov type inequalities for differential forms with non-isolated zeros

We generalize the Novikov inequalities for 1-forms in two different directions: first, we allow non-isolated critical points (assuming that they are non-degenerate in the sense of R.Bott), and, secondly, we strengthen the inequalities by means of twisting by an arbitrary flat bundle. The proof uses Bismut's modification of the Witten deformation of the de Rham complex; it is based on an explicit estimate on the lower part of the spectrum of the corresponding Laplacian. In particular, we obtain a new analytic proof of the degenerate Morse inequalities of Bott.

The Novikov-Bott inequalities

We generalize the Novikov inequalities for 1-forms in two different directions: first, we allow non-isolated critical points (assuming that they are non-degenerate in the sense of R.Bott), and, secondly, we strengthen the inequalities by means of twisting by an arbitrary flat bundle. We also obtain an $L^2$ version of these inequalities with finite von Neumann algebras. The proof of the main theorem uses Bismut's modification of the Witten deformation of the de Rham complex; it is based on an explicit estimate on the lower part of the spectrum of the corresponding Laplacian.

Deformation of infinite dimensional differential graded Lie algebras

We introduce a notion of elliptic differential graded Lie algebra. The class of elliptic algebras contains such examples as the algebra of differential forms with values in endomorphisms of a flat vector bundle over a compact manifold, etc. For elliptic differential graded algebra we construct a complete set of deformations. We show that for several deformation problems the existence of a formal power series solution guarantees the existence of an analytic solution.

Witten deformation of Ray-Singer analytic torsion

Consider a flat vector bundle F over compact Riemannian manifold M and let f be a self-indexing Morse function on M. Let g be a smooth Euclidean metric on F. Set g_t=exp(-2tf)g and let ρ(t) be the Ray-Singer analytic torsion of F associated to the metric g_t. Assuming that the vector field $grad f$ satisfies the Morse-Smale transversality conditions, we provide an asymptotic expansion for log(ρ(t)) for t\to\infty of the form a_0+a_1t+b log(t)+o(1). We present explicit formulae for coefficients a_0,a_1 and b. In particular, we show that b is a half integer.
