Inclusive $τ$ Hadronic Decay Rate in a Renormalon-Free Gluon Condensate Scheme

In a recent work by some of us it was shown that the long-standing discrepancy between the QCD perturbation series for the inclusive hadronic tau decay rate computed in the CIPT and FOPT expansion approaches can be understood from the fact that CIPT has an infrared (IR) sensitivity that it not compatible with the standard form of the operator production expansion (OPE). For concrete IR renormalon models for the QCD Adler function the resulting CIPT-FOPT discrepancy, the asymptotic separation, can be calculated analytically from the Borel representation of the CIPT series expansion. If the known perturbative corrections for the QCD Adler function at the 5-loop level already have a sizeable contribution from the asymptotic behavior related to the gluon condensate (GC) renormalon, the asymptotic separation is dominated by that renormalon. This implies that the CIPT expansion can be reconciled with FOPT, when a renormalon-free scheme for the GC is adopted. In this talk we discuss such a renormalon-free scheme for the GC, which involves perturbative subtractions in analogy to using short-distance quark mass schemes instead of the pole mass. Using a concrete realistic high-order Borel model for the Adler function consistent with the known corrections up to 5 loops and containing a sizeable GC renormalon contribution, we show that the CIPT-FOPT discrepancy can be avoided when switching to the renormalon-free GC scheme. At the same time, the perturbative convergence of $τ$ hadronic spectral funtion moments strongly sensitive to the GC OPE corrections is considerably improved. We show that these improvements may lead to higher precision for strong coupling determinations.

Reconciling the Contour-Improved and Fixed-Order Approaches for $τ$ Hadronic Spectral Moments I: Renormalon-Free Gluon Condensate Scheme

We propose a simple and easy-to-implement scheme for a renormalon-free gluon condensate (GC) matrix element, which is analogous to implementations of short-distance heavy-quark mass renormalization schemes existing in the literature already for a long time. Because the scheme is based on a perturbative subtraction at the level of the matrix element, with a freely adaptable infrared factorization scale, it can be implemented with little effort for any observable where the GC is relevant. The scheme depends on the renormalon norm of the GC which has to be supplemented independently. We apply the scheme to the fixed-order (FOPT) and contour-improved (CIPT) perturbative expansions of $τ$ hadronic spectral function moments. These expansions exhibit a long-standing discrepancy for moments used in high-precision determinations of the strong coupling in the commonly used GC scheme that is not renormalon-free. We show that the scheme is capable of resolving the FOPT-CIPT discrepancy problem. At the same time, the perturbative behaviour of the moments that previously showed bad convergence properties and for which the non-perturbative corrections from the GC are sizeable, is substantially improved. The new GC scheme may provide a powerful theoretical tool for future phenomenological applications.

Scalar correlator, Higgs decay into quarks, and scheme variations of the QCD coupling

In this work, the perturbative QCD series of the scalar correlation function $Ψ(s)$ is investigated. Besides ${\rm Im}Ψ(s)$, which is relevant for Higgs decay into quarks, two other physical correlators, $Ψ^{"}(s)$ and $D^L(s)$, have been employed in QCD applications like quark mass determinations or hadronic $τ$ decays. $D^L(s)$ suffers from large higher-order corrections and, by resorting to the large-$β_0$ approximation, it is shown that this is related to a spurious renormalon ambiguity at $u=1$. Hence, this correlator should be avoided in phenomenological analyses. Moreover, it turns out advantageous to express the quark mass factor, introduced to make the scalar current renormalisation group invariant, in terms of the renormalisation invariant quark mass $\hat m_q$. To further study the behaviour of the perturbative expansion, we introduce a QCD coupling $\hatα_s$, whose running is explicitly renormalisation scheme independent. The scheme dependence of $\hatα_s$ is parametrised by a single parameter $C$, being related to transformations of the QCD scale parameter $Λ$. It is demonstrated that appropriate choices of $C$ lead to a substantial improvement in the behaviour of the perturbative series for $Ψ^{"}(s)$ and ${\rm Im}Ψ(s)$.

Scheme variations of the QCD coupling and hadronic $τ$ decays

The Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) coupling, $α_s$, is not a physical observable of the theory since it depends on conventions related to the renormalization procedure. We introduce a definition of the QCD coupling, denoted by $\hatα_s$, whose running is explicitly renormalization scheme invariant. The scheme dependence of the new coupling $\hatα_s$ is parameterized by a single parameter $C$, related to transformations of the QCD scale $Λ$. It is demonstrated that appropriate choices of $C$ can lead to substantial improvements in the perturbative prediction of physical observables. As phenomenological applications, we study $e^+e^-$ scattering and decays of the $τ$ lepton into hadrons, both being governed by the QCD Adler function.

Scheme variations of the QCD coupling and tau decays

The QCD coupling, $α_s$, is not a physical observable since it depends on conventions related to the renormalization procedure. Here we discuss a redefinition of the coupling where changes of scheme are parametrised by a single parameter $C$. The new coupling is denoted $\hat α_s$ and its running is scheme independent. Moreover, scheme variations become completely analogous to renormalization scale variations. We discuss how the coupling $\hat α_s$ can be used in order to optimize predictions for the inclusive hadronic decays of the tau lepton. Preliminary investigations of the $C$-scheme in the presence of higher-order terms of the perturbative series are discussed here for the first time.

Anomalous dimensions of four-quark operators and renormalon structure of mesonic two-point correlators

In this work, we calculate leading-order anomalous dimension matrices for dimension-6 four-quark operators which appear in the operator product expansion of flavour non-diagonal and diagonal vector and axial-vector two-point correlation functions. The infrared renormalon structure corresponding to four-quark operators is reviewed and it is investigated how the eigenvalues of the anomalous dimension matrices influence the singular behaviour of the $u=3$ infrared renormalon pole. It is found that compared to the large-$β_0$ approximation where at most quadratic poles are present, in full QCD at $N_f=3$ the most singular pole is more than cubic with an exponent $κ\approx 3.2$.

Improved anatomy of epsilon'/epsilon in the Standard Model

We present a new analysis of the ratio epsilon'/epsilon within the Standard Model (SM) using a formalism that is manifestly independent of the values of leading (V-A)x(V-A) QCD penguin, and EW penguin hadronic matrix elements of the operators Q_4, Q_9, and Q_10, and applies to the SM as well as extensions with the same operator structure. It is valid under the assumption that the SM exactly describes the data on CP-conserving K -> pi pi amplitudes. As a result of this and the high precision now available for CKM and quark mass parameters, to high accuracy epsilon'/epsilon depends only on two non-perturbative parameters, B_6^(1/2) and B_8^(3/2), and perturbatively calculable Wilson coefficients. Within the SM, we are separately able to determine the hadronic matrix element <Q_4>_0 from CP-conserving data, significantly more precisely than presently possible with lattice QCD. Employing B_6^(1/2) = 0.57+-0.19 and B_8^(3/2) = 0.76+-0.05, extracted from recent results by the RBC-UKQCD collaboration, we obtain epsilon'/epsilon = (1.9+-4.5) 10^-4, substantially more precise than the recent RBC-UKQCD prediction and 2.9 sigma below the experimental value (16.6+-2.3) 10^-4, with the error being fully dominated by that on B_6^(1/2). Even discarding lattice input completely, but employing the recently obtained bound B_6^(1/2) <= B_8^(3/2) <= 1 from the large-N approach, the SM value is found more than 2 sigma below the experimental value. At B_6^(1/2) = B_8^(3/2) = 1, varying all other parameters within one sigma, we find epsilon'/epsilon = (8.6+-3.2) 10^-4. We present a detailed anatomy of the various SM uncertainties, including all sub-leading hadronic matrix elements, briefly commenting on the possibility of underestimated SM contributions as well as on the impact of our results on new physics models.

Determination of alpha_s from tau decays

Hadronic tau decays offer the possibility of determining the strong coupling alpha_s at relatively low energy. Precisely for this reason, however, good control over the perturbative QCD corrections, the non-perturbative condensate contributions in the framework of the operator product expansion (OPE), as well as the corrections going beyond the OPE, the duality violations (DVs), is required. On the perturbative QCD side, the contour-improved versus fixed-order resummation of the series is still an issue, and will be discussed. Regarding the analysis, self-consistent fits to the data including all theory parameters have to be performed, and this is also explained in some detail. The fit quantities are moment integrals of the tau spectral function data in a certain energy window and care should be taken to have acceptable perturbative behaviour of those moments as well as control over higher-dimensional operator corrections in the OPE.

Low-energy constants and condensates from the tau hadronic spectral functions

We use results of fits to the OPAL spectral data, obtained from non-strange hadronic τdecays, to evaluate the difference between the vector and axial current correlators, Π_{V-A}(Q^2). The behavior of Π_{V-A}(Q^2) near euclidean momentum Q^2=0 is used to determine the effective low-energy constants L_10^eff and C_87^eff related to the renormalized low-energy constants L_10^r and C_87^r in the chiral lagrangian. We also investigate how well two-loop chiral perturbation theory describes Π_{V-A}(Q^2) as a function of Q^2. This is the first determination of L_10^eff and C_87^eff to employ a fully self-consistent model for the violations of quark-hadron duality in both the vector and axial channels. We also discuss the values of the coefficients C_{6,V-A} and C_{8,V-A} governing the dimension six and eight contributions to the operator product expansion representation of Π_{V-A}(Q^2).

An updated determination of α_s from tau decays

Employing our previous framework to treat non-perturbative effects self-consistently, including duality violations, we update the determination of the strong coupling, α_s, using a modified version of the 1998 OPAL data, updated to reflect current values of exclusive mode hadronic τdecay branching fractions. Our best n_f=3 values from the updated OPAL data are α_s(m^2_τ)=0.325+-0.018 and α_s(m^2_τ)=0.347+-0.025 in fixed-order and contour-improved perturbation theory, respectively. To account for non-perturbative effects, non-linear, multi-parameter fits are necessary. We have, therefore, investigated the posterior probability distribution of the model parameters underlying our fits in more detail. We find that OPAL data alone provide only weak constraints on some of the parameters needed to model duality violations, especially in the case of fits involving axial vector channel data, making additional prior assumptions on the expected size of these parameters necessary at present. We provide evidence that this situation could be greatly improved if hadronic spectral functions based on the high-statistics BaBar and Belle data were to be made available.

Perturbative expansion of tau hadronic spectral function moments and alpha_s extractions

Various moments of the hadronic spectral functions have been employed in the determination of the strong coupling alpha_s from tau decays. In this work we study the behaviour of their perturbative series under different assumptions for the large-order behaviour of the Adler function, extending previous work on the tau hadronic width. We find that the moments can be divided into a small number of classes, whose characteristics depend only on generic features of the moment weight function and Adler function series. Some moments that are commonly employed in alpha_s analyses from tau decays should be avoided because of their perturbative instability. This conclusion is corroborated by a simplified alpha_s extraction from individual moments. Furthermore, under reasonable assumptions for the higher-order behaviour of the perturbative series, fixed-order perturbation theory (FOPT) provides the preferred framework for the renormalization group improvement of all moments that show good perturbative behaviour. Finally, we provide further evidence for the plausibility of the description of the Adler function in terms of a small number of leading renormalon singularities.

The scalar gluonium correlator: large-beta_0 and beyond

The investigation of the scalar gluonium correlator is interesting because it carries the quantum numbers of the vacuum and the relevant hadronic current is related to the anomalous trace of the QCD energy-momentum tensor in the chiral limit. After reviewing the purely perturbative corrections known up to next-next-to-leading order, the behaviour of the correlator is studied to all orders by means of the large-beta_0 approximation. Similar to the QCD Adler function, the large-order behaviour is governed by the leading ultraviolet renormalon pole. The structure of infrared renormalon poles, being related to the operator product expansion are also discussed, as well as a low-energy theorem for the correlator that provides a relation to the renormalisation group invariant gluon condensate, and the vacuum matrix element of the trace of the QCD energy-momentum tensor.

The strong coupling from tau decays without prejudice

We review our recent determination of the strong coupling α_s from the OPAL data for non-strange hadronic tau decays. We find that α_s(m^2_τ) =0.325+-0.018 using fixed-order perturbation theory, and α_s(m^2_τ)=0.347+-0.025 using contour-improved perturbation theory. At present, these values supersede any earlier determinations of the strong coupling from hadronic tau decays, including those from ALEPH data.

A new determination of α_s from hadronic τ decays

We present a new framework for the extraction of the strong coupling from hadronic τdecays through finite-energy sum rules. Our focus is on the small, but still significant non-perturbative effects that, in principle, affect both the central value and the systematic error. We employ a quantitative model in order to accommodate violations of quark-hadron duality, and enforce a consistent treatment of the higher-dimensional contributions of the Operator Product Expansion to our sum rules. Using 1998 OPAL data for the non-strange isovector vector and axial-vector spectral functions, we find the n_f=3 values α_s(m_τ^2)=0.307+-0.019 in fixed-order perturbation theory, and 0.322+-0.026 in contour-improved perturbation theory. For comparison, the original OPAL analysis of the same data led to the values 0.324+-0.014 (fixed-order) and 0.348+-0.021 (contour-improved).

On the Extraction of the Strong Coupling from Hadronic Tau Decay

The finite energy sum rule extraction of the strong coupling α_s from hadronic τ decay data provides one of its most precise experimental determinations. As precision improves, small non-perturbative effects become increasingly relevant to both the central value and error. Here we present a new framework for this extraction employing a physically motivated model to accommodate violations of quark-hadron duality and enforcing a consistent treatment of higher-dimension operator product expansion contributions. Using 1998 OPAL data for the non-strange vector and axial-vector spectral functions, we find the n_f=3 values for α_s(m_τ^2) of 0.307(19) for fixed-order perturbation theory and 0.322(26) for contour-improved perturbation theory, corresponding to n_f=5 values for α_s(M_Z^2) of 0.1169(25) and 0.1187(32), respectively.

Recent progress in hadronic tau decays

The determination of alpha_s from hadronic tau decays is impeded by the fact that two choices for the renormalisation group resummation, namely fixed-order (FOPT) and contour-improved perturbation theory (CIPT), yield systematically differing results. On the basis of a model for higher-order terms in the perturbative series, which incorporates well-known structure from renormalons, it is found that FOPT smoothly approaches the Borel sum for the tau hadronic width, while CIPT is unable to account for the resummed series. An example for the behaviour of QCD spectral function moments, displaying a similar behaviour, is presented as well.

The Kpi vector form factor and constraints from Kl3 decays

The slope and curvature parameters of the $Kπ$ vector form factor, $F_+^{Kπ}$, are fitted to the data on $\tauKpi$ and $K_{l3}$ decays yielding $λ_+'=(25.49 \pm 0.31) \times 10^{-3}$ and $λ_+"= (12.22 \pm 0.14) \times 10^{-4}$. The pole position of the $K^*(892)^\pm$ is found to be at $m_{K^*(892)^\pm}= 892.0\pm 0.5$ MeV and $Γ_{K^*(892)^\pm}= 46.5 \pm1.1$ MeV. The phase-space integrals relevant for $K_{l3}$ analyses and the $P$-wave isospin-1/2 $Kπ$ phase-shift threshold parameters are also calculated.

What two models may teach us about duality violations in QCD

Though the operator product expansion is applicable in the calculation of current correlation functions in the Euclidean region, when approaching the Minkowskian domain, violations of quark-hadron duality are expected to occur, due to the presence of bound-state or resonance poles. In QCD finite-energy sum rules, contour integrals in the complex energy plane down to the Minkowskian axis have to be performed, and thus the question arises what the impact of duality violations may be. The structure and possible relevance of duality violations is investigated on the basis of two models: the Coulomb system and a model for light-quark correlators which has already been studied previously. As might yet be naively expected, duality violations are in some sense "maximal" for zero-width bound states and they become weaker for broader resonances whose poles lie further away from the physical axis. Furthermore, to a certain extent, they can be suppressed by choosing appropriate weight functions in the finite-energy sum rules. A simplified Ansatz for including effects of duality violations in phenomenological QCD sum rule analyses is discussed as well.

Constraining the Kpi vector form factor by tau---> K pi nu_tau and K_l3 decay data

A subtracted dispersive representation of the $Kπ$ vector form factor, $F_+^{Kπ}$, is used to fit the Belle spectrum of $\tauKpi$ decays incorporating constraints from results on $K_{l3}$ decays. Through the use of three subtractions, the slope and curvature of $F_+^{Kπ}$ are obtained directly from the data yielding $λ_+'=(25.49 \pm 0.31) \times 10^{-3}$ and $λ_+"= (12.22 \pm 0.14) \times 10^{-4}$. The phase-space integrals relevant for $K_{l3}$ analyses are calculated. Additionally, from the pole position on the second Riemann sheet the mass and width of the $K^*(892)^\pm$ are found to be $m_{K^*(892)^\pm}= 892.0\pm 0.5$ MeV and $Γ_{K^*(892)^\pm}= 46.5 \pm 1.1$ MeV. Finally, we study the $P$-wave isospin-1/2 $Kπ$ phase-shift and its threshold parameters.

Improving the Kpi vector form factor through Kl3 constraints

The $Kπ$ vector form factor, $F_+^{Kπ}$, used to reproduce the Belle spectrum of $\tauKpi$ decays is described by means of a three-times subtracted dispersion relation also incorporating constraints from $K_{l3}$ decays. The slope and curvature of $F_+^{Kπ}$ are fitted to the data yielding $λ_+'=(25.49 \pm 0.31) \times 10^{-3}$ and $λ_+"= (12.22 \pm 0.14) \times 10^{-4}$. The pole parameters of the $K^*(892)^\pm$ are found to be $m_{K^*(892)^\pm}= 892.0\pm 0.5$ MeV and $Γ_{K^*(892)^\pm}= 46.5 \pm1.1$ MeV. The phase-space integrals relevant for $K_{l3}$ analyses and the $P$-wave isospin-1/2 $Kπ$ phase-shift threshold parameters are also calculated.

alpha_s and the tau hadronic width

Different choices exist for the renormalisation group resummation in the determination of $α_s$ from hadronic $τ$ decays: namely fixed-order (FOPT) and contour-improved perturbation theory (CIPT). The two approaches lead to systematic differences in the resulting $α_s$. On the basis of a model for higher-order terms in the perturbative series, which incorporates well-known structure from renormalons, it is found that while CIPT is unable to account for the fully resummed series, FOPT smoothly approaches the Borel sum. Employing the model to determine $α_s$ yields $α_s(M_τ)=0.316 \pm 0.006$, which after evolution leads to $α_s(M_Z) = 0.1180 \pm 0.0008$.

Extraction of m_s and |V_us| from Hadronic Tau Decays

We review recent work to determine the strange quark mass m_s as well as the proposal to determine |V_{us}| using hadronic tau decay data. The recent update of the strange spectral function by OPAL and their moments of the invariant mass distribution are employed. Our results are |V_us|=0.2208 +- 0.0034 and m_s (2 GeV)=81 +- 22 MeV. Our result is already competitive to the standard extraction of |V_us| from K_e3 decays and to the new proposals to determine it. The error on V_us is dominated by experiment and will be eventually much improved by the B-factories hadronic tau data. Ultimately, a simultaneous fit of both m_s and |V_us| to a set of moments of the hadronic tau decays invariant mass distribution will provide one of the most accurate determinations of these Standard Model parameters.

Flavour-symmetry breaking of the quark condensate and chiral corrections to the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation

The relation between the chiral quark condensate in QCD sum rules and chiral perturbation theory is clarified with the help of a low-energy theorem for the scalar and pseudoscalar correlation functions. It is found that the quark condensate should be identified with the non-normal-ordered vacuum expectation value of quark-antiquark fields. Utilising results on flavour SU(3) breaking of the quark condensate from QCD sum rules, the unphysical low-energy constant H_2^r in the chiral Lagrangian, as well as next-to-leading order corrections to the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation are estimated.

f_B and f_B_s from QCD sum rules

The decay constants of the pseudoscalar mesons B and B_s are evaluated from QCD sum rules for the pseudoscalar two-point function. Recently calculated perturbative three-loop QCD corrections are incorporated into the sum rule. An analysis in terms of the bottom quark pole mass turns out to be unreliable due to large higher order radiative corrections. On the contrary, in the MS_bar scheme the higher order corrections are under good theoretical control and a reliable determination of f_B and f_{B_s} becomes feasible. Including variations of all input parameters within reasonable ranges, our final results for the pseudoscalar meson decay constants are f_B = 210 +- 19 MeV and f_B_s = 244 +- 21 MeV. Employing additional information on the product sqrt(B_B) f_B from global fits to the unitarity triangle, we are in a position to also extract the B-meson B-parameter B_B = 1.26 +- 0.45. Our results are well compatible with analogous determinations of the above quantities in lattice QCD.

The Anatomy of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ Beyond Leading Logarithms with Improved Hadronic Matrix Elements

We use the recently calculated two--loop anomalous dimensions of current-current operators, QCD and electroweak penguin operators to construct the effective Hamiltonian for $ΔS=1$ transitions beyond the leading logarithmic approximation. We solve the renormalization group equations and give the numerical values of Wilson coeff. functions. We propose a new semi-phenomenological approach to hadronic matrix elements which incorporates the data for $CP$-conserving $K \rightarrow ππ$ amplitudes and allows to determine the matrix elements of all $(V-A)\otimes (V-A)$ operators in any renormalization scheme and do a renormalization group analysis of all hadronic matrix elements $\langle Q_i(μ) \rangle$. We compare critically our treatment of these matrix elements with those given in the literature. We find in the NDR scheme $\epe = (6.7 \pm 2.6)\times 10^{-4}$ in agreement with the experimental findings of E731. We point out however that the increase of $\langle Q_6 \rangle$ by only a factor of two gives $\epe = (20.0 \pm 6.5)\times 10^{-4}$ in agreement with the result of NA31. The dependence of $\epe$ on $Λ_{\bar{MS}}$, $m_t$ and $\langle Q_{6,8} \rangle$ is presented.
