$α_s$ from an improved $τ$ vector isovector spectral function

After discussing difficulties in determining $α_s$ from tau decay due to the existence of Duality Violations and the associated asymptotic nature of the OPE, we describe a new determination based on an improved vector isovector spectral function, now based solely on experimental input, obtained by (i) combining ALEPH and OPAL results for $2π+4π$ and (ii) replacing $K^-K^0$ and higher-multiplicity exclusive-mode contributions, both previously estimated using Monte Carlo, with new experimental BaBar results for $K^-K^0$ and results implied by $e^+ e^-$ cross sections and CVC for the higher-multiplicity modes. We find $α_s(m_τ)=0.3077\pm 0.0075$, which corresponds to $α_s(m_Z)=0.1171\pm 0.0010$. Finally, we comment on some of the shortcomings in the criticism of our approach by Pich and Rodriguez-Sanchez.

Evaluation of the three-flavor quark-disconnected contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment from experimental data

We point out that the sum of the strange-quark-connected and full, three-flavor quark-disconnected contributions to the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution, $a_μ^{\mathrm{LO,HVP}}$, to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, is a physical observable, and provide a data-based determination of this quantity in the isospin limit. The result, $40.1(1.5)\times 10^{-10}$, or $38.7(2.0)\times 10^{-10}$, depending on which data compilation is used, serves as a target of comparison for lattice calculations of the same isospin-limit combination. Subtracting from this result the average of lattice determinations of the strange-quark-connected contribution, one obtains also an alternate determination of the isospin-limit three-flavor disconnected contribution to $a_μ^{\mathrm{LO,HVP}}$. The result of this determination, $-13.3(1.5)\times 10^{-10}$, or $-14.6(2.0)\times 10^{-10}$, depending on which data compilation is used, agrees well and is competitive with the most precise current lattice determination.

Higher-order QCD corrections to $H\to b\bar b$ from rational approximants

We use rational approximants to study missing higher orders in the massless scalar-current quark correlator. We predict the yet unknown six-loop coefficient of its imaginary part, related to $Γ(H\to b \bar b)$, to be $c_5=-6900\pm 1400$. With this result, the perturbative series becomes almost insensitive to renormalization scale variations and the intrinsic QCD truncation uncertainty is tiny. This confirms the expectation that higher-order loop computations for this quantity will not be required in the foreseeable future, as the uncertainty in $Γ(H\to b \bar b)$ will remain largely dominated by the Standard Model parameters.

Inclusive $τ$ Hadronic Decay Rate in a Renormalon-Free Gluon Condensate Scheme

In a recent work by some of us it was shown that the long-standing discrepancy between the QCD perturbation series for the inclusive hadronic tau decay rate computed in the CIPT and FOPT expansion approaches can be understood from the fact that CIPT has an infrared (IR) sensitivity that it not compatible with the standard form of the operator production expansion (OPE). For concrete IR renormalon models for the QCD Adler function the resulting CIPT-FOPT discrepancy, the asymptotic separation, can be calculated analytically from the Borel representation of the CIPT series expansion. If the known perturbative corrections for the QCD Adler function at the 5-loop level already have a sizeable contribution from the asymptotic behavior related to the gluon condensate (GC) renormalon, the asymptotic separation is dominated by that renormalon. This implies that the CIPT expansion can be reconciled with FOPT, when a renormalon-free scheme for the GC is adopted. In this talk we discuss such a renormalon-free scheme for the GC, which involves perturbative subtractions in analogy to using short-distance quark mass schemes instead of the pole mass. Using a concrete realistic high-order Borel model for the Adler function consistent with the known corrections up to 5 loops and containing a sizeable GC renormalon contribution, we show that the CIPT-FOPT discrepancy can be avoided when switching to the renormalon-free GC scheme. At the same time, the perturbative convergence of $τ$ hadronic spectral funtion moments strongly sensitive to the GC OPE corrections is considerably improved. We show that these improvements may lead to higher precision for strong coupling determinations.

Reconciling the Contour-Improved and Fixed-Order Approaches for $τ$ Hadronic Spectral Moments I: Renormalon-Free Gluon Condensate Scheme

We propose a simple and easy-to-implement scheme for a renormalon-free gluon condensate (GC) matrix element, which is analogous to implementations of short-distance heavy-quark mass renormalization schemes existing in the literature already for a long time. Because the scheme is based on a perturbative subtraction at the level of the matrix element, with a freely adaptable infrared factorization scale, it can be implemented with little effort for any observable where the GC is relevant. The scheme depends on the renormalon norm of the GC which has to be supplemented independently. We apply the scheme to the fixed-order (FOPT) and contour-improved (CIPT) perturbative expansions of $τ$ hadronic spectral function moments. These expansions exhibit a long-standing discrepancy for moments used in high-precision determinations of the strong coupling in the commonly used GC scheme that is not renormalon-free. We show that the scheme is capable of resolving the FOPT-CIPT discrepancy problem. At the same time, the perturbative behaviour of the moments that previously showed bad convergence properties and for which the non-perturbative corrections from the GC are sizeable, is substantially improved. The new GC scheme may provide a powerful theoretical tool for future phenomenological applications.

The strong coupling from an improved $τ$ vector isovector spectral function

We combine ALEPH and OPAL results for the spectral distributions measured in $τ\toπ^-π^0ν_τ$, $τ\to 2π^-π^+π^0ν_τ$ and $τ\toπ^-3π^0ν_τ$ decays with (i) recent BaBar results for the analogous $τ\to K^- K^0ν_τ$ distribution and (ii) estimates of the contributions from other hadronic $τ$-decay modes obtained using CVC and electroproduction data, to obtain a new and more precise non-strange, inclusive vector, isovector spectral function. The BaBar $K^- K^0$ and CVC/electroproduction results provide us with alternate, entirely data-based input for the contributions of all exclusive modes for which ALEPH and OPAL employed Monte-Carlo-based estimates. We use the resulting spectral function to determine $α_s(m_τ)$, the strong coupling at the $τ$ mass scale, employing finite energy sum rules. Using the fixed-order perturbation theory (FOPT) prescription, we find $α_s(m_τ)=0.3077\pm 0.0075$, which corresponds to the five-flavor result $α_s(M_Z)=0.1171\pm 0.0010$ at the $Z$ mass. While we also provide an estimate using contour-improved perturbation theory (CIPT), we point out that the FOPT prescription is to be preferred for comparison with other $α_s$ determinations employing the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme, especially given the inconsistency between CIPT and the standard operator product expansion recently pointed out in the literature. Additional experimental input on the dominant $2π$ and $4π$ modes would allow for further improvements to the current analysis.

Precise $α_s$ determination from charmonium sum rules

The strong coupling, $α_s$, governs perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and is one of the free parameters of the Standard Model. We introduce a new method that allows a precise extraction of $α_s(m_Z)$ from dimensionless ratios of roots of moments of the charm-quark vector correlator. The ratios we use in our analysis have a rather weak logarithmic quark-mass dependence, starting at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$, and can be obtained from experimental data with good precision, since they benefit from positive correlations among the individual experimentally determined moments. We perform a careful and conservative error analysis with special emphasis on uncertainties related to the truncation of perturbation theory, treating the renormalization scales such as to ensure order-by-order convergence. Our final result, with expressions at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^3)$, is $α_s(m_Z)=0.1168\pm 0.0019$.

preprint2020arXiv

Precise determination of $α_s$ from relativistic quarkonium sum rules

We determine the strong coupling $α_s(m_Z)$ from dimensionless ratios of roots of moments of the charm- and bottom-quark vector and charm pseudo-scalar correlators, dubbed $R_q^{X,n}\equiv(M_q^{X,n})^\frac{1}{n}/(M_q^{X,n+1})^\frac{1}{n+1}$, with $X=V,P$, as well as from the $0$-th moment of the charm pseudo-scalar correlator, $M_c^{P,0}$. In the quantities we use, the mass dependence is very weak, entering only logarithmically, starting at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$. We carefully study all sources of uncertainties, paying special attention to truncation errors, and making sure that order-by-order convergence is maintained by our choice of renormalization scale variation. In the computation of the experimental uncertainty for the moment ratios, the correlations among individual moments are properly taken into account. Additionally, in the perturbative contributions to experimental vector-current moments, $α_s(m_Z)$ is kept as a free parameter such that our extraction of the strong coupling is unbiased and based only on experimental data. The most precise extraction of $α_s$ from vector correlators comes from the ratio of the charm-quark moments $R_c^{V,2}$ and reads $α_s(m_Z)=0.1168\pm 0.0019$, as we have recently discussed in a companion letter. From bottom moments, using the ratio $R_b^{V,2}$, we find $α_s(m_Z)=0.1186\pm0.0048$. Our results from the lattice pseudo-scalar charm correlator agree with the central values of previous determinations, but have larger uncertainties due to our more conservative study of the perturbative error. Averaging the results obtained from various lattice inputs for the $n=0$ moment we find $α_s(m_Z)=0.1177\pm0.0020$. Combining experimental and lattice information on charm correlators into a single fit we obtain $α_s(m_Z)=0.1170\pm 0.0014$, which is the main result of this article.

$α_s$ analyses from hadronic tau decays with OPAL and ALEPH data

Recently, we extracted the strong coupling, $α_s(m_τ^2)$, from the revised ALEPH data for non-strange hadronic tau decays. Our analysis is based on a method previously used for the determination of the strong coupling from OPAL data. In our strategy, we employ different moments of the spectral functions both with and without pinching, including Duality Violations, in order to obtain fully self-consistent analyses that do not rely on untested assumptions (such as the smallness of higher dimension contributions in the OPE). Here we discuss the $α_s$ values obtained from the ALEPH and the OPAL data, the robustness of the analysis, as well as non-perturbative contributions from DVs and the OPE. We show that, although the $α_s$ determination is sound, non-perturbative effects limit the accuracy with which one can extract the strong coupling from tau decay data. Finally, we discuss the compatibility of the data sets and the possibility of a combined analysis.

$α_s$ in 2016 from the (revised) ALEPH data for $τ$ decay

We summarize a comparison of the two strategies which are currently available in the literature for determining the value of $α_s(m_τ)$. We will refer to these as the truncated Operator Product Expansion model and the Duality Violation model. After describing the main features of both approaches, we explain why the former fails to pass crucial tests. The latter, on the other hand, passes all the tests known up to date and, therefore, should be currently considered the only reliable method.

Scheme variations of the QCD coupling and hadronic $τ$ decays

The Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) coupling, $α_s$, is not a physical observable of the theory since it depends on conventions related to the renormalization procedure. We introduce a definition of the QCD coupling, denoted by $\hatα_s$, whose running is explicitly renormalization scheme invariant. The scheme dependence of the new coupling $\hatα_s$ is parameterized by a single parameter $C$, related to transformations of the QCD scale $Λ$. It is demonstrated that appropriate choices of $C$ can lead to substantial improvements in the perturbative prediction of physical observables. As phenomenological applications, we study $e^+e^-$ scattering and decays of the $τ$ lepton into hadrons, both being governed by the QCD Adler function.

Scheme variations of the QCD coupling and tau decays

The QCD coupling, $α_s$, is not a physical observable since it depends on conventions related to the renormalization procedure. Here we discuss a redefinition of the coupling where changes of scheme are parametrised by a single parameter $C$. The new coupling is denoted $\hat α_s$ and its running is scheme independent. Moreover, scheme variations become completely analogous to renormalization scale variations. We discuss how the coupling $\hat α_s$ can be used in order to optimize predictions for the inclusive hadronic decays of the tau lepton. Preliminary investigations of the $C$-scheme in the presence of higher-order terms of the perturbative series are discussed here for the first time.

The case for duality violations in the analysis of hadronic $τ$ decays

We discuss why, in the determination of $α_s(m_τ^2)$ from hadronic $τ$ decays, two important assumptions made in most of previous analyses, namely the neglect of higher-dimension condensates and of Duality Violations (DVs), have introduced uncontrolled systematic errors into this determination. Although the use of pinched weights is usually offered as a justification of these assumptions, we explain why it is not possible to simultaneously suppress these two contributions; particularly since the Operator Product Expansion is expected to be an asymptotic, rather than a convergent expansion. There is not only experimental and theoretical evidence for DVs, but they also affect the extraction of $α_s(m_τ^2)$.

$α_s$ from the updated ALEPH data for hadronic $τ$ decays

We extract the strong coupling $α_s(m_τ^2)$ from the recently updated ALEPH non-strange spectral functions obtained from hadronic $τ$ decays. We apply a self-consistent analysis method, first tested in the analysis of OPAL data, to extract $α_s(m_τ^2)$ and non-perturbative contributions. The analysis yields $α_s^{\rm FO}(m_τ^2)=0.296\pm0.010 $, using Fixed Order Perturbation Theory (FOPT), and $α^{\rm CI}_s(m_τ^2)= 0.310\pm0.014$, using Contour Improved Perturbation Theory (CIPT). The weighted average of these results with those previously obtained from OPAL data give $α_s^{\rm FO}(m_τ^2)=0.303\pm 0.009$ and $α_s^{\rm CI}(m_τ^2)=0.319\pm 0.012$, which gives, after evolution to the $Z$ boson mass scale, $α^{\rm FO}_s(m_Z^2)=0.1165\pm0.0012 $ and $α_s^{\rm CI}(m_Z^2)=0.1185\pm0.0015 $, respectively. We observe that non-perturbative effects limit the accuracy with which $α_s$ can be extracted from $τ$ decay data.

Anomalous dimensions of four-quark operators and renormalon structure of mesonic two-point correlators

In this work, we calculate leading-order anomalous dimension matrices for dimension-6 four-quark operators which appear in the operator product expansion of flavour non-diagonal and diagonal vector and axial-vector two-point correlation functions. The infrared renormalon structure corresponding to four-quark operators is reviewed and it is investigated how the eigenvalues of the anomalous dimension matrices influence the singular behaviour of the $u=3$ infrared renormalon pole. It is found that compared to the large-$β_0$ approximation where at most quadratic poles are present, in full QCD at $N_f=3$ the most singular pole is more than cubic with an exponent $κ\approx 3.2$.

Low-energy constants and condensates from ALEPH hadronic $τ$ decay data

We determine the NLO chiral low-energy constant $L_{10}^r$, and combinations $C_{12}^r\pm C_{61}^r+C_{80}^r$, $C_{13}^r-C_{62}^r+C_{81}^r$, $C_{61}^r$, and $C_{87}^r$, of the NNLO chiral low-energy constants incorporating recently revised ALEPH results for the non-strange vector ($V$) and axial-vector ($A$) hadronic $τ$ decay distributions and recently updated RBC/UKQCD lattice data for the non-strange $V-A$ two-point function. In the $\bar{\rm MS}$ scheme, at renormalization scale $μ=770\ {MeV}$, we find $L_{10}^r=-0.00350(17)$, $C_{12}^r+C_{61}^r+C_{80}^r=0.00237(16)\ {GeV}^{-2}$, $C_{12}^r-C_{61}^r+C_{80}^r=-0.00056(15)\ {GeV}^{-2}$, $C_{13}^r-C_{62}^r+C_{81}^r=0.00046(9)\ {GeV}^{-2}$, $C_{61}^r=0.00146(15)\ {GeV}^{-2}$, and $C_{87}^r=0.00510(22)\ {GeV}^{-2}$. With errors here at or below the level expected for contributions of yet higher order in the chiral expansion, the analysis exhausts the possibilities of what can be meaningfully achieved in an NNLO analysis. We also consider the dimension six and dimension eight coefficients in the operator product expansion in the $V-A$ channel.

In this talk, we explain the ingredients of this determination. Our errors are at or below the level expected for contributions of yet higher order in the chiral expansion, suggesting that our results exhaust the possibilities of what can be meaningfully achieved in an NNLO analysis.

The strong coupling from the revised ALEPH data for hadronic $τ$ decays

We apply an analysis method previously developed for the extraction of the strong coupling from the OPAL data to the recently revised ALEPH data for non-strange hadronic $τ$ decays. Our analysis yields the values $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.296\pm 0.010$ using fixed-order perturbation theory, and $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.310\pm 0.014$ using contour-improved perturbation theory. Averaging these values with our previously obtained values from the OPAL data, we find $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.303\pm 0.009$, respectively, $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.319\pm 0.012$. We present a critique of the analysis method employed previously, for example in analyses by the ALEPH and OPAL collaborations, and compare it with our own approach. Our conclusion is that non-perturbative effects limit the accuracy with which the strong coupling, an inherently perturbative quantity, can be extracted at energies as low as the $τ$ mass. Our results further indicate that systematic errors on the determination of the strong coupling from analyses of hadronic $τ$-decay data have been underestimated in much of the existing literature.

$α_{s}$ from the (revised) ALEPH data for $τ$ decay

We present a new analysis of $α_s$ from hadronic $τ$ decays based on the recently revised ALEPH data. The analysis is based on a strategy which we previously applied to the OPAL data. We critically compare our strategy to the one traditionally used and comment on the main differences. Our analysis yields the values $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.296\pm 0.010$ using fixed-order perturbation theory, and $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.310\pm 0.014$ using contour-improved perturbation theory. Averaging these values with our previously obtained values from the OPAL data, we find $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.303\pm 0.009$, respectively, $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.319\pm 0.012$, as the most reliable results for $α_s$ from $τ$ decays currently available.

Anomalous Higgs couplings in angular asymmetries of H --> Zl+l- and e+e- --> HZ

We study in detail the impact of anomalous Higgs couplings in angular asymmetries of the crossing-symmetric processes H --> Zl+l- and e+e- --> HZ. Beyond Standard Model physics is parametrized in terms of the SU(3)xSU(2)_LxU(1)_Y dimension-six effective Lagrangian. In the light of present bounds on d = 6 interactions we study how angular asymmetries can reveal non-standard CP-even and CP-odd couplings. We provide approximate expressions to all observables of interest making transparent their dominant dependence on anomalous couplings. We show that some asymmetries may reveal BSM effects that are hidden in other observables. In particular, CP-even and CP-odd d = 6 HZgamma couplings as well as (to a lesser extent) HZll contact interactions can generate asymmetries at the several percent level, while having small or no effects on the di-lepton invariant mass spectrum of H --> Zl+l-. Finally, the higher di-lepton invariant mass probed in e+e- --> HZ leads to interesting differences in the asymmetries with respect to those of H --> Zl+l- that may lead to complementary anomalous coupling searches at the LHC and e+e- colliders.

In the light of present bounds on d=6 couplings, we show that some asymmetries can reveal BSM effects that would otherwise be hidden in other observables. The d=6 HZgamma couplings as well as (to a lesser extent) HZll contact interactions can generate asymmetries at the several percent level, albeit having less significant effects on the di-lepton invariant mass spectrum of the decay H --> Zl+l-. Low-energy constants and condensates from the tau hadronic spectral functions

We use results of fits to the OPAL spectral data, obtained from non-strange hadronic τdecays, to evaluate the difference between the vector and axial current correlators, Π_{V-A}(Q^2). The behavior of Π_{V-A}(Q^2) near euclidean momentum Q^2=0 is used to determine the effective low-energy constants L_10^eff and C_87^eff related to the renormalized low-energy constants L_10^r and C_87^r in the chiral lagrangian. We also investigate how well two-loop chiral perturbation theory describes Π_{V-A}(Q^2) as a function of Q^2. This is the first determination of L_10^eff and C_87^eff to employ a fully self-consistent model for the violations of quark-hadron duality in both the vector and axial channels. We also discuss the values of the coefficients C_{6,V-A} and C_{8,V-A} governing the dimension six and eight contributions to the operator product expansion representation of Π_{V-A}(Q^2).

On the perturbative expansion of tau hadronic spectral function moments

In the determination of alpha_s from tau decays several different moments of the hadronic spectral functions have been used. In a recent work, we performed an analysis of their perturbative behaviour under two different assumptions for the higher-order coefficients of the Adler function. We showed that the various moments can be divided in a small number of classes. We concluded that some of the moments commonly employed in alpha_s extractions should be avoided due to their bad perturbative behaviour. Furthermore, for the moments that have a good perturbative behaviour, and under reasonable assumptions for the higher-order behaviour of the Adler function, fixed-order perturbation theory (FOPT) provides the superior framework for the renormalization group improvement. Here we discuss an extension of this analysis where we consider the perturbative series for values of the hadronic invariant mass squared s_0 < m_τ^2. Our conclusions are not altered within a reasonable s_0 window.

Perturbative expansion of tau hadronic spectral function moments

In the extraction of $α_s$ from hadronic tau decay data several moments of the spectral functions have been employed. Furthermore, different renormalization group improvement (RGI) frameworks have been advocated, leading to conflicting values of $α_s$. Recently, we performed a systematic study of the perturbative behavior of these moments in the context of the two main-stream RGI frameworks: Fixed Order Perturbation Theory (FOPT) and Contour Improved Perturbation Theory (CIPT). The yet unknown higher order coefficients of the perturbative series were modelled using the available knowledge of the renormalon singularities of the QCD Adler function. We were able to show that within these RGI frameworks some of the commonly employed moments should be avoided due to their poor perturbative behavior. Furthermore, under reasonable assumptions about the higher order behavior of the perturbative series FOPT provides the preferred RGI framework.

An updated determination of α_s from tau decays

Employing our previous framework to treat non-perturbative effects self-consistently, including duality violations, we update the determination of the strong coupling, α_s, using a modified version of the 1998 OPAL data, updated to reflect current values of exclusive mode hadronic τdecay branching fractions. Our best n_f=3 values from the updated OPAL data are α_s(m^2_τ)=0.325+-0.018 and α_s(m^2_τ)=0.347+-0.025 in fixed-order and contour-improved perturbation theory, respectively. To account for non-perturbative effects, non-linear, multi-parameter fits are necessary. We have, therefore, investigated the posterior probability distribution of the model parameters underlying our fits in more detail. We find that OPAL data alone provide only weak constraints on some of the parameters needed to model duality violations, especially in the case of fits involving axial vector channel data, making additional prior assumptions on the expected size of these parameters necessary at present. We provide evidence that this situation could be greatly improved if hadronic spectral functions based on the high-statistics BaBar and Belle data were to be made available.

Perturbative expansion of tau hadronic spectral function moments and alpha_s extractions

Various moments of the hadronic spectral functions have been employed in the determination of the strong coupling alpha_s from tau decays. In this work we study the behaviour of their perturbative series under different assumptions for the large-order behaviour of the Adler function, extending previous work on the tau hadronic width. We find that the moments can be divided into a small number of classes, whose characteristics depend only on generic features of the moment weight function and Adler function series. Some moments that are commonly employed in alpha_s analyses from tau decays should be avoided because of their perturbative instability. This conclusion is corroborated by a simplified alpha_s extraction from individual moments. Furthermore, under reasonable assumptions for the higher-order behaviour of the perturbative series, fixed-order perturbation theory (FOPT) provides the preferred framework for the renormalization group improvement of all moments that show good perturbative behaviour. Finally, we provide further evidence for the plausibility of the description of the Adler function in terms of a small number of leading renormalon singularities.

The strong coupling from tau decays without prejudice

We review our recent determination of the strong coupling α_s from the OPAL data for non-strange hadronic tau decays. We find that α_s(m^2_τ) =0.325+-0.018 using fixed-order perturbation theory, and α_s(m^2_τ)=0.347+-0.025 using contour-improved perturbation theory. At present, these values supersede any earlier determinations of the strong coupling from hadronic tau decays, including those from ALEPH data.

A new determination of α_s from hadronic τ decays

We present a new framework for the extraction of the strong coupling from hadronic τdecays through finite-energy sum rules. Our focus is on the small, but still significant non-perturbative effects that, in principle, affect both the central value and the systematic error. We employ a quantitative model in order to accommodate violations of quark-hadron duality, and enforce a consistent treatment of the higher-dimensional contributions of the Operator Product Expansion to our sum rules. Using 1998 OPAL data for the non-strange isovector vector and axial-vector spectral functions, we find the n_f=3 values α_s(m_τ^2)=0.307+-0.019 in fixed-order perturbation theory, and 0.322+-0.026 in contour-improved perturbation theory. For comparison, the original OPAL analysis of the same data led to the values 0.324+-0.014 (fixed-order) and 0.348+-0.021 (contour-improved).

On the Extraction of the Strong Coupling from Hadronic Tau Decay

The finite energy sum rule extraction of the strong coupling α_s from hadronic τ decay data provides one of its most precise experimental determinations. As precision improves, small non-perturbative effects become increasingly relevant to both the central value and error. Here we present a new framework for this extraction employing a physically motivated model to accommodate violations of quark-hadron duality and enforcing a consistent treatment of higher-dimension operator product expansion contributions. Using 1998 OPAL data for the non-strange vector and axial-vector spectral functions, we find the n_f=3 values for α_s(m_τ^2) of 0.307(19) for fixed-order perturbation theory and 0.322(26) for contour-improved perturbation theory, corresponding to n_f=5 values for α_s(M_Z^2) of 0.1169(25) and 0.1187(32), respectively.
