$α_s$ from an improved $τ$ vector isovector spectral function

After discussing difficulties in determining $α_s$ from tau decay due to the existence of Duality Violations and the associated asymptotic nature of the OPE, we describe a new determination based on an improved vector isovector spectral function, now based solely on experimental input, obtained by (i) combining ALEPH and OPAL results for $2π+4π$ and (ii) replacing $K^-K^0$ and higher-multiplicity exclusive-mode contributions, both previously estimated using Monte Carlo, with new experimental BaBar results for $K^-K^0$ and results implied by $e^+ e^-$ cross sections and CVC for the higher-multiplicity modes. We find $α_s(m_τ)=0.3077\pm 0.0075$, which corresponds to $α_s(m_Z)=0.1171\pm 0.0010$. Finally, we comment on some of the shortcomings in the criticism of our approach by Pich and Rodriguez-Sanchez.

The strong coupling from an improved $τ$ vector isovector spectral function

We combine ALEPH and OPAL results for the spectral distributions measured in $τ\toπ^-π^0ν_τ$, $τ\to 2π^-π^+π^0ν_τ$ and $τ\toπ^-3π^0ν_τ$ decays with (i) recent BaBar results for the analogous $τ\to K^- K^0ν_τ$ distribution and (ii) estimates of the contributions from other hadronic $τ$-decay modes obtained using CVC and electroproduction data, to obtain a new and more precise non-strange, inclusive vector, isovector spectral function. The BaBar $K^- K^0$ and CVC/electroproduction results provide us with alternate, entirely data-based input for the contributions of all exclusive modes for which ALEPH and OPAL employed Monte-Carlo-based estimates. We use the resulting spectral function to determine $α_s(m_τ)$, the strong coupling at the $τ$ mass scale, employing finite energy sum rules. Using the fixed-order perturbation theory (FOPT) prescription, we find $α_s(m_τ)=0.3077\pm 0.0075$, which corresponds to the five-flavor result $α_s(M_Z)=0.1171\pm 0.0010$ at the $Z$ mass. While we also provide an estimate using contour-improved perturbation theory (CIPT), we point out that the FOPT prescription is to be preferred for comparison with other $α_s$ determinations employing the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme, especially given the inconsistency between CIPT and the standard operator product expansion recently pointed out in the literature. Additional experimental input on the dominant $2π$ and $4π$ modes would allow for further improvements to the current analysis.

Light quark vacuum polarization at the physical point and contribution to the muon $g-2$

We report on the computation of the connected light quark vacuum polarization with 2+1+1 flavors of HISQ fermions at the physical point and its contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. Three ensembles, generated by the MILC collaboration, are used to take the continuum limit. The finite volume correction to this result is computed in the (Euclidean) time-momentum representation to NNLO in chiral perturbation theory. We find $a_μ^{ll}({\rm HVP})=(659\pm 20\pm 5\pm 5\pm 4)\times 10^{-10}$, where the errors are statistical and estimates of residual uncertainties from taking the continuum limit, scale setting, and truncation of chiral perturbation theory at NNLO. We compare our results with recent ones in the literature.

$α_s$ analyses from hadronic tau decays with OPAL and ALEPH data

Recently, we extracted the strong coupling, $α_s(m_τ^2)$, from the revised ALEPH data for non-strange hadronic tau decays. Our analysis is based on a method previously used for the determination of the strong coupling from OPAL data. In our strategy, we employ different moments of the spectral functions both with and without pinching, including Duality Violations, in order to obtain fully self-consistent analyses that do not rely on untested assumptions (such as the smallness of higher dimension contributions in the OPE). Here we discuss the $α_s$ values obtained from the ALEPH and the OPAL data, the robustness of the analysis, as well as non-perturbative contributions from DVs and the OPE. We show that, although the $α_s$ determination is sound, non-perturbative effects limit the accuracy with which one can extract the strong coupling from tau decay data. Finally, we discuss the compatibility of the data sets and the possibility of a combined analysis.

$α_s$ in 2016 from the (revised) ALEPH data for $τ$ decay

We summarize a comparison of the two strategies which are currently available in the literature for determining the value of $α_s(m_τ)$. We will refer to these as the truncated Operator Product Expansion model and the Duality Violation model. After describing the main features of both approaches, we explain why the former fails to pass crucial tests. The latter, on the other hand, passes all the tests known up to date and, therefore, should be currently considered the only reliable method.

Finite-volume effects in the muon anomalous magnetic moment on the lattice

We investigate finite-volume effects in the hadronic vacuum polarization, with an eye toward the corresponding systematic error in the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We consider both recent lattice data as well as lowest-order, finite-volume chiral perturbation theory, in order to get a quantitative understanding. Even though leading-order chiral perturbation theory does not provide a good description of the hadronic vacuum polarization, it turns out that it gives a good representation of finite-volume effects. We find that finite-volume effects cannot be ignored when the aim is a few percent level accuracy for the leading-order hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, even when using ensembles with $m_πL> 4$ and $m_π\sim 200$ MeV.

The case for duality violations in the analysis of hadronic $τ$ decays

We discuss why, in the determination of $α_s(m_τ^2)$ from hadronic $τ$ decays, two important assumptions made in most of previous analyses, namely the neglect of higher-dimension condensates and of Duality Violations (DVs), have introduced uncontrolled systematic errors into this determination. Although the use of pinched weights is usually offered as a justification of these assumptions, we explain why it is not possible to simultaneously suppress these two contributions; particularly since the Operator Product Expansion is expected to be an asymptotic, rather than a convergent expansion. There is not only experimental and theoretical evidence for DVs, but they also affect the extraction of $α_s(m_τ^2)$.

$α_s$ from the updated ALEPH data for hadronic $τ$ decays

We extract the strong coupling $α_s(m_τ^2)$ from the recently updated ALEPH non-strange spectral functions obtained from hadronic $τ$ decays. We apply a self-consistent analysis method, first tested in the analysis of OPAL data, to extract $α_s(m_τ^2)$ and non-perturbative contributions. The analysis yields $α_s^{\rm FO}(m_τ^2)=0.296\pm0.010 $, using Fixed Order Perturbation Theory (FOPT), and $α^{\rm CI}_s(m_τ^2)= 0.310\pm0.014$, using Contour Improved Perturbation Theory (CIPT). The weighted average of these results with those previously obtained from OPAL data give $α_s^{\rm FO}(m_τ^2)=0.303\pm 0.009$ and $α_s^{\rm CI}(m_τ^2)=0.319\pm 0.012$, which gives, after evolution to the $Z$ boson mass scale, $α^{\rm FO}_s(m_Z^2)=0.1165\pm0.0012 $ and $α_s^{\rm CI}(m_Z^2)=0.1185\pm0.0015 $, respectively. We observe that non-perturbative effects limit the accuracy with which $α_s$ can be extracted from $τ$ decay data.

Finite-volume effects in the hadronic vacuum polarization

We investigate finite-volume effects in the hadronic vacuum polarization, with an eye toward the corresponding systematic error in the muon anomalous magnetic moment. While it is well known that leading-order chiral perturbation theory does not provide a good description of the hadronic vacuum polarization, it turns out that it gives a much better representation of finite-volume effects. Indications are that finite-volume effects cannot be ignored when the aim is a few percent level accuracy for the hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, even when $m_πL \sim 4$ and $m_π\sim 200$ MeV.

Low-energy constants and condensates from ALEPH hadronic $τ$ decay data

We determine the NLO chiral low-energy constant $L_{10}^r$, and combinations $C_{12}^r\pm C_{61}^r+C_{80}^r$, $C_{13}^r-C_{62}^r+C_{81}^r$, $C_{61}^r$, and $C_{87}^r$, of the NNLO chiral low-energy constants incorporating recently revised ALEPH results for the non-strange vector ($V$) and axial-vector ($A$) hadronic $τ$ decay distributions and recently updated RBC/UKQCD lattice data for the non-strange $V-A$ two-point function. In the $\bar{\rm MS}$ scheme, at renormalization scale $μ=770\ {MeV}$, we find $L_{10}^r=-0.00350(17)$, $C_{12}^r+C_{61}^r+C_{80}^r=0.00237(16)\ {GeV}^{-2}$, $C_{12}^r-C_{61}^r+C_{80}^r=-0.00056(15)\ {GeV}^{-2}$, $C_{13}^r-C_{62}^r+C_{81}^r=0.00046(9)\ {GeV}^{-2}$, $C_{61}^r=0.00146(15)\ {GeV}^{-2}$, and $C_{87}^r=0.00510(22)\ {GeV}^{-2}$. With errors here at or below the level expected for contributions of yet higher order in the chiral expansion, the analysis exhausts the possibilities of what can be meaningfully achieved in an NNLO analysis. We also consider the dimension six and dimension eight coefficients in the operator product expansion in the $V-A$ channel.

Low-energy constants from ALEPH hadronic tau decay data

We determined the NLO chiral low-energy constant $L_{10}$, and various combinations of NNLO chiral low-energy constants employing recently revised ALEPH results for the non-strange vector (V) and axial-vector (A) hadronic tau decay distributions and recently updated RBC/UKQCD lattice data for the non-strange V-A two-point function. In this talk, we explain the ingredients of this determination. Our errors are at or below the level expected for contributions of yet higher order in the chiral expansion, suggesting that our results exhaust the possibilities of what can be meaningfully achieved in an NNLO analysis.

The strong coupling from the revised ALEPH data for hadronic $τ$ decays

We apply an analysis method previously developed for the extraction of the strong coupling from the OPAL data to the recently revised ALEPH data for non-strange hadronic $τ$ decays. Our analysis yields the values $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.296\pm 0.010$ using fixed-order perturbation theory, and $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.310\pm 0.014$ using contour-improved perturbation theory. Averaging these values with our previously obtained values from the OPAL data, we find $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.303\pm 0.009$, respectively, $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.319\pm 0.012$. We present a critique of the analysis method employed previously, for example in analyses by the ALEPH and OPAL collaborations, and compare it with our own approach. Our conclusion is that non-perturbative effects limit the accuracy with which the strong coupling, an inherently perturbative quantity, can be extracted at energies as low as the $τ$ mass. Our results further indicate that systematic errors on the determination of the strong coupling from analyses of hadronic $τ$-decay data have been underestimated in much of the existing literature.

$α_{s}$ from the (revised) ALEPH data for $τ$ decay

We present a new analysis of $α_s$ from hadronic $τ$ decays based on the recently revised ALEPH data. The analysis is based on a strategy which we previously applied to the OPAL data. We critically compare our strategy to the one traditionally used and comment on the main differences. Our analysis yields the values $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.296\pm 0.010$ using fixed-order perturbation theory, and $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.310\pm 0.014$ using contour-improved perturbation theory. Averaging these values with our previously obtained values from the OPAL data, we find $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.303\pm 0.009$, respectively, $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.319\pm 0.012$, as the most reliable results for $α_s$ from $τ$ decays currently available.

A Hybrid Strategy for the Lattice Evaluation of the Leading Order Hadronic Contribution to $(g-2)_μ$

The leading-order hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magentic moment, $a_μ^{\rm LO,HVP}$, can be expressed as an integral over Euclidean $Q^2$ of the vacuum polarization function. We point out that a simple trapezoid-rule numerical integration of the current lattice data is good enough to produce a result with a less-than-$1\%$ error for the contribution from the interval above $Q^2\gtrsim 0.1-0.2\ \mathrm{GeV}^2$. This leaves the interval below this value of $Q^2$ as the one to focus on in the future. In order to achieve an accurate result also in this lower window $Q^2\lesssim 0.1-0.2\ \mathrm{GeV}^2$, we indicate the usefulness of three possible tools. These are: Padé Approximants, polynomials in a conformal variable and a NNLO Chiral Perturbation Theory representation supplemented by a $Q^4$ term. The combination of the numerical integration in the upper $Q^2$ interval together with the use of these tools in the lower $Q^2$ interval provides a hybrid strategy which looks promising as a means of reaching the desired goal on the lattice of a sub-percent precision in the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment.

A new strategy for evaluating the LO HVP contribution to $(g-2)_μ$ on the lattice

A highly physical model of the subtracted $I=1$ vector polarization, obtained using a dispersive representation with precise hadronic $τ$ decay data as input, is used to investigate systematic issues in the lattice evaluation of the leading order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. The model is also employed to study possible resolutions of these problems. A hybrid approach to analyzing lattice data, involving low-order Padé, low-degree conformal-variable polynomial, or supplemented NNLO ChPT fits for $Q^2$ below $\sim 0.1-0.2$ GeV$^2$ and direct numerical integration of lattice data above this point, is shown to bring the systematic issues identified under control at the sub-$1\%$ level.

preprint2014arXiv

A New Strategy for the Lattice Evaluation of the Leading Order Hadronic Contribution to $(g-2)_μ$

A reliable evaluation of the integral giving the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment should be possible using a simple trapezoid-rule integration of lattice data for the subtracted electromagnetic current polarization function in the Euclidean momentum interval $Q^2>Q^2_{min}$, coupled with an $N$-parameter Padé or other representation of the polarization in the interval $0<Q^2<Q^2_{min}$, for sufficiently high $Q^2_{min}$ and sufficiently large $N$. Using a physically motivated model for the $I=1$ polarization, and the covariance matrix from a recent lattice simulation to generate associated fake "lattice data," we show that systematic errors associated with the choices of $Q^2_{min}$ and $N$ can be reduced to well below the 1% level for $Q^2_{min}$ as low as 0.1 GeV$^2$ and rather small $N$. For such low $Q^2_{min}$, both an NNLO chiral representation with one additional NNNLO term and a low-order polynomial expansion employing a conformally transformed variable also provide representations sufficiently accurate to reach this precision for the low-$Q^2$ contribution. Combined with standard techniques for reducing other sources of error on the lattice determination, this hybrid strategy thus looks to provide a promising approach to reaching the goal of a sub-percent precision determination of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment on the lattice.

Low-energy constants and condensates from the tau hadronic spectral functions

We use results of fits to the OPAL spectral data, obtained from non-strange hadronic τdecays, to evaluate the difference between the vector and axial current correlators, Π_{V-A}(Q^2). The behavior of Π_{V-A}(Q^2) near euclidean momentum Q^2=0 is used to determine the effective low-energy constants L_10^eff and C_87^eff related to the renormalized low-energy constants L_10^r and C_87^r in the chiral lagrangian. We also investigate how well two-loop chiral perturbation theory describes Π_{V-A}(Q^2) as a function of Q^2. This is the first determination of L_10^eff and C_87^eff to employ a fully self-consistent model for the violations of quark-hadron duality in both the vector and axial channels. We also discuss the values of the coefficients C_{6,V-A} and C_{8,V-A} governing the dimension six and eight contributions to the operator product expansion representation of Π_{V-A}(Q^2).

Narrow Tetraquarks at Large N

Following a recent suggestion by Weinberg, we use the large-N expansion in QCD to discuss the decay amplitudes of tetraquarks into ordinary mesons as well as their mixing properties. We find that the flavor structure of the tetraquark is a crucial ingredient to determine both this mixing as well as the decays. Although in some cases tetraquarks should be expected to be as narrow as ordinary mesons, they may get to be even narrower, depending on this flavor structure.

Tests of hadronic vacuum polarization fits for the muon anomalous magnetic moment

We construct a physically motivated model for the isospin-one non-strange vacuum polarization function Pi(Q^2) based on a spectral function given by vector-channel OPAL data from hadronic tau decays for energies below the tau mass and a successful parametrization, employing perturbation theory and a model for quark-hadron duality violations, for higher energies. Using a covariance matrix and Q^2 values from a recent lattice simulation, we then generate fake data for Pi(Q^2) and use it to test fitting methods currently employed on the lattice for extracting the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. This comparison reveals a systematic error much larger than the few-percent total error sometimes claimed for such extractions in the literature. In particular, we find that errors deduced from fits using a Vector Meson Dominance ansatz are misleading, typically turning out to be much smaller than the actual discrepancy between the fit and exact model results. The use of a sequence of Padé approximants, recently advocated in the literature, appears to provide a safer fitting strategy.

The hadronic vacuum polarization with twisted boundary conditions

The leading-order hadronic contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is given by a weighted integral over the subtracted hadronic vacuum polarization. This integral is dominated by euclidean momenta of order the muon mass which are not available on current lattice volumes with periodic boundary conditions. Twisted boundary conditions can in principle help access momenta of any size even in a finite volume. We investigate the implementation of twisted boundary conditions both numerically (using all-mode averaging for improved statistics) and analytically, and present our initial results.

An updated determination of α_s from tau decays

Employing our previous framework to treat non-perturbative effects self-consistently, including duality violations, we update the determination of the strong coupling, α_s, using a modified version of the 1998 OPAL data, updated to reflect current values of exclusive mode hadronic τdecay branching fractions. Our best n_f=3 values from the updated OPAL data are α_s(m^2_τ)=0.325+-0.018 and α_s(m^2_τ)=0.347+-0.025 in fixed-order and contour-improved perturbation theory, respectively. To account for non-perturbative effects, non-linear, multi-parameter fits are necessary. We have, therefore, investigated the posterior probability distribution of the model parameters underlying our fits in more detail. We find that OPAL data alone provide only weak constraints on some of the parameters needed to model duality violations, especially in the case of fits involving axial vector channel data, making additional prior assumptions on the expected size of these parameters necessary at present. We provide evidence that this situation could be greatly improved if hadronic spectral functions based on the high-statistics BaBar and Belle data were to be made available.

Model-independent parametrization of the hadronic vacuum polarization and g-2 for the muon on the lattice

The leading hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment is given by a weighted integral over euclidean momentum of the hadronic vacuum polarization. This integral is dominated by momenta of order the muon mass. Since the finite volume in lattice QCD makes it difficult to compute the vacuum polarization at a large number of low momenta with high statistics (combined with the fact that one cannot compute it at zero momentum), a parametrization of the vacuum polarization is required to extrapolate the data. A much used functional form is based on vector meson dominance, which introduces model dependence into the lattice computation of the magnetic moment. Here we introduce a model-independent extrapolation method, and present a few first tests of this new method.

Pade approximants and g-2 for the muon

The leading hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment is given by a weighted euclidean momentum integral of the hadronic vacuum polarization. This integral is dominated by momenta of order the muon mass. Since in lattice QCD it is difficult to compute the vacuum polarization at a large number of low momenta, a parametrization of the vacuum polarization is required to extrapolate the data. Most fits to date are based on vector meson dominance, which introduces model dependence into the lattice computation of the magnetic moment. Here we introduce a model-independent extrapolation method, and present a few first tests of this new method.

The Gribov horizon and the one-loop color-Coulomb potential

We recalculate the color-Coulomb potential to one-loop order, under the assumption that the effect of the Gribov horizon is to make i) the transverse gluon propagator less singular; and ii) the color-Coulomb potential more singular, than their perturbative behavior in the low-momentum limit. As a first guess, the effect of the Gribov horizon is mimicked by introducing a transverse momentum-dependent gluon mass term, leading to a propagator of the Gribov form, with the prescription that the mass parameter should be adjusted to the unique value where the infrared behavior of the Coulomb potential is enhanced. We find that this procedure leads to a Coulomb potential rising asymptotically as a linear term modified by a logarithm.

The strong coupling from tau decays without prejudice

We review our recent determination of the strong coupling α_s from the OPAL data for non-strange hadronic tau decays. We find that α_s(m^2_τ) =0.325+-0.018 using fixed-order perturbation theory, and α_s(m^2_τ)=0.347+-0.025 using contour-improved perturbation theory. At present, these values supersede any earlier determinations of the strong coupling from hadronic tau decays, including those from ALEPH data.

A new determination of α_s from hadronic τ decays

We present a new framework for the extraction of the strong coupling from hadronic τdecays through finite-energy sum rules. Our focus is on the small, but still significant non-perturbative effects that, in principle, affect both the central value and the systematic error. We employ a quantitative model in order to accommodate violations of quark-hadron duality, and enforce a consistent treatment of the higher-dimensional contributions of the Operator Product Expansion to our sum rules. Using 1998 OPAL data for the non-strange isovector vector and axial-vector spectral functions, we find the n_f=3 values α_s(m_τ^2)=0.307+-0.019 in fixed-order perturbation theory, and 0.322+-0.026 in contour-improved perturbation theory. For comparison, the original OPAL analysis of the same data led to the values 0.324+-0.014 (fixed-order) and 0.348+-0.021 (contour-improved).

Analytic Reconstruction of heavy-quark two-point functions at O(α_s^3)

Using a method previously developed, based on the Mellin-Barnes transform, we reconstruct the two-point correlators in the vector, axial, scalar and pseudoscalar channels from the Taylor expansion at q^2=0, the threshold expansion at q^2=4m^2 and the OPE at q^2\rightarrow -\infty, where m is the heavy quark mass. The reconstruction is analytic and systematic and is controlled by an error function which becomes smaller as more terms in those expansions are known.

On the Extraction of the Strong Coupling from Hadronic Tau Decay

The finite energy sum rule extraction of the strong coupling α_s from hadronic τ decay data provides one of its most precise experimental determinations. As precision improves, small non-perturbative effects become increasingly relevant to both the central value and error. Here we present a new framework for this extraction employing a physically motivated model to accommodate violations of quark-hadron duality and enforcing a consistent treatment of higher-dimension operator product expansion contributions. Using 1998 OPAL data for the non-strange vector and axial-vector spectral functions, we find the n_f=3 values for α_s(m_τ^2) of 0.307(19) for fixed-order perturbation theory and 0.322(26) for contour-improved perturbation theory, corresponding to n_f=5 values for α_s(M_Z^2) of 0.1169(25) and 0.1187(32), respectively.
