HP -- A code for the calculation of Hubbard parameters using density-functional perturbation theory

We introduce HP, an implementation of density-functional perturbation theory, designed to compute Hubbard parameters (on-site $U$ and inter-site $V$) in the framework of DFT+$U$ and DFT+$U$+$V$. The code does not require the use of computationally expensive supercells of the traditional linear-response approach; instead, unit cells are used with monochromatic perturbations that significantly reduce the computational cost of determining Hubbard parameters. HP is an open-source software distributed under the terms of the GPL as a component of Quantum ESPRESSO. As with other components, HP is optimized to run on a variety of different platforms, from laptops to massively parallel architectures, using native mathematical libraries (LAPACK and FFTW) and a hierarchy of custom parallelization layers built on top of MPI. The effectiveness of the code is showcased by computing Hubbard parameters self-consistently for the phospho-olivine Li$_x$Mn$_{1/2}$Fe$_{1/2}$PO$_4$ ($x=0, 1/2, 1$) and by highlighting the accuracy of predictions of the geometry and Li intercalation voltages.

Pulay forces in density-functional theory with extended Hubbard functionals: From nonorthogonalized to orthogonalized manifolds

We present a derivation of the exact expression for Pulay forces in density-functional theory calculations augmented with extended Hubbard functionals, and arising from the use of orthogonalized atomic orbitals as projectors for the Hubbard manifold. The derivative of the inverse square root of the orbital overlap matrix is obtained as a closed-form solution of the associated Lyapunov (Sylvester) equation. The expression for the resulting contribution to the forces is presented in the framework of ultrasoft pseudopotentials and the projector-augmented-wave method, and using a plane wave basis set. We have benchmarked the present implementation with respect to finite differences of total energies for the case of NiO, finding excellent agreement. Owing to the accuracy of Hubbard-corrected density-functional theory calculations - provided the Hubbard parameters are computed for the manifold under consideration - the present work paves the way for systematic studies of solid-state and molecular transition-metal and rare-earth compounds.

Self-consistent Hubbard parameters from density-functional perturbation theory in the ultrasoft and projector-augmented wave formulations

The self-consistent evaluation of Hubbard parameters using linear-response theory is crucial for quantitatively predictive calculations based on Hubbard-corrected density-functional theory. Here, we extend a recently-introduced approach based on density-functional perturbation theory (DFPT) for the calculation of the on-site Hubbard $U$ to also compute the inter-site Hubbard $V$. DFPT allows to reduce significantly computational costs, improve numerical accuracy, and fully automate the calculation of the Hubbard parameters by recasting the linear response of a localized perturbation into an array of monochromatic perturbations that can be calculated in the primitive cell. In addition, here we generalize the entire formalism from norm-conserving to ultrasoft and projector-augmented wave formulations, and to metallic ground states. After benchmarking DFPT against the conventional real-space Hubbard linear response in a supercell, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the present extended Hubbard formulation in determining the equilibrium crystal structure of Li$_x$MnPO$_4$ (x=0,1) and the subtle energetics of Li intercalation.

Electronic structure of pristine and Ni-substituted LaFeO$_3$ from near edge x-ray absorption fine structure experiments and first-principles simulations

We present a joint theoretical and experimental study of the oxygen $K$-edge spectra for LaFeO$_3$ and homovalent Ni-substituted LaFeO$_3$ (LaFe$_{0.75}$Ni$_{0.25}$O$_3$), using first-principles simulations based on density-functional theory with extended Hubbard functionals and x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements. Ground-state and excited-state XANES calculations employ Hubbard on-site $U$ and inter-site $V$ parameters determined from first principles and the Lanczos recursive method to obtain absorption cross sections, which allows for a reliable description of XANES spectra in transition-metal compounds in a very broad energy range, with an accuracy comparable to that of hybrid functionals but at a substantially lower cost. We show that standard gradient-corrected exchange-correlation functionals fail in capturing accurately the electronic properties of both materials. In particular, for LaFe$_{0.75}$Ni$_{0.25}$O$_3$ they do not reproduce its semiconducting behaviour and provide a poor description of the pre-edge features at the O $K$ edge. The inclusion of Hubbard interactions leads to a drastic improvement, accounting for the semiconducting ground state of LaFe$_{0.75}$Ni$_{0.25}$O$_3$ and for a good agreement between calculated and measured XANES spectra. We show that the partial substitution of Fe for Ni affects the conduction-band bottom by generating a strongly hybridized O($2p$)-Ni($3d$) minority-spin empty electronic state. The present work, based on a consistent correction of self-interaction errors, outlines the crucial role of extended Hubbard functionals to describe the electronic structure of complex transition-metal oxides such as LaFeO$_3$ and LaFe$_{0.75}$Ni$_{0.25}$O$_3$ and paves the way to future studies on similar systems.

Hubbard-corrected density functional perturbation theory with ultrasoft pseudopotentials

We present in full detail a newly developed formalism enabling density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) calculations from a DFT+$U$ ground state. The implementation includes ultrasoft pseudopotentials and is valid for both insulating and metallic systems. It aims at fully exploiting the versatility of DFPT combined with the low-cost DFT+$U$ functional. This allows to avoid computationally intensive frozen-phonon calculations when DFT+$U$ is used to eliminate the residual electronic self-interaction from approximate functionals and to capture the localization of valence electrons e.g. on $d$ or $f$ states. In this way, the effects of electronic localization (possibly due to correlations) are consistently taken into account in the calculation of specific phonon modes, Born effective charges, dielectric tensors and in quantities requiring well converged sums over many phonon frequencies, as phonon density of states and free energies. The new computational tool is applied to two representative systems, namely CoO, a prototypical transition metal monoxide and LiCoO$_2$, a material employed for the cathode of Li-ion batteries. The results show the effectiveness of our formalism to capture in a quantitatively reliable way the vibrational properties of systems with localized valence electrons.

LDA+Usc calculations of phase relations in FeO

Using the LDA+$\textit{U}_\text{sc}$ method, we present calculations phase relations of iron monoxides involving five polytypes in multiple spin-state configurations. The Hubbard parameter $U$ is determined self-consistently simultaneously with the occupation matrix and structures at arbitrary pressures. The Hubbard parameter strongly depends on pressure, structure, and spin state. Comparison with experimental structural data indicates the LDA+$\textit{U}_\text{sc}$ can predict structure, compression curves, phase relations, and transition pressures very well for the insulating B1 and iB8 states. However, it requires additional calculations using the Mermin functional that includes the electronic entropic contribution to the free energy to obtain an nB8 metallic state and a consistent iB8 to nB8 insulator-to-metal transition pressure.

Self-consistent DFT+$U$+$V$ study of oxygen vacancies in SrTiO$_3$

Contradictory theoretical results for oxygen vacancies in SrTiO$_3$ (STO) were often related to the peculiar properties of STO, which is a $d^0$ transition metal oxide with mixed ionic-covalent bonding. Here, we apply, for the first time, density functional theory (DFT) within the extended Hubbard DFT+$U$+$V$ approach, including on-site as well as inter-site electronic interactions, to study oxygen-deficient STO with Hubbard $U$ and $V$ parameters computed self-consistently via density-functional perturbation theory. Our results demonstrate that the extended Hubbard functional is a promising approach to study defects in materials with electronic properties similar to STO. Indeed, DFT+$U$+$V$ provides a better description of stoichiometric STO compared to standard DFT or DFT+$U$, the band gap and crystal field splitting being in good agreement with experiments. In turn, also the description of the electronic properties of oxygen vacancies in STO is improved, with formation energies in excellent agreement with experiments as well as results obtained with the most frequently used hybrid functionals, however at a fraction of the computational cost. While our results do not fully resolve the contradictory findings reported in literature, our systematic approach leads to a deeper understanding of their origin, which stems from different cell sizes, STO phases, the exchange-correlation functional, and the treatment of structural relaxations and spin-polarization.

Thermoelasticity of Fe$^{3+}$- and Al-bearing bridgmanite

We report \textit{ab initio} (LDA + U$_{sc}$) calculations of thermoelastic properties of ferric iron (Fe$^{3+}$)- and aluminum (Al)-bearing bridgmanite (MgSiO$_3$ perovskite), the main Earth forming phase, at relevant pressure and temperature conditions and compositions. Three coupled substitutions, namely, [Al]$_{Mg}$-[Al]$_{Si}$, [Fe$^{3+}$]$_{Mg}$-[Fe$^{3+}$]$_{Si}$, and [Fe$^{3+}$]$_{Mg}$-[Al]$_{Si}$ have been investigated. Aggregate elastic moduli and sound velocities are successfully compared with limited experimental data available. In the case of the [Fe$^{3+}$]$_{Mg}$-[Fe$^{3+}$]$_{Si}$ substitution, the high-spin (S=5/2) to low-spin (S=1/2) crossover in [Fe$^{3+}$]$_{Si}$ induces a volume collapse and elastic anomalies across the transition region. However, the associated anomalies should disappear in the presence of aluminum in the most favorable substitution, i.e., [Fe$^{3+}$]$_{Mg}$-[Al]$_{Si}$. Calculated elastic properties along a lower mantle model geotherm suggest that the elastic behavior of bridgmanite with simultaneous substitution of Fe$_{2}$O$_3$ and Al$_{2}$O$_3$ in equal proportions or with Al$_{2}$O$_3$ in excess should be similar to that of (Mg,Fe$^{2+}$)SiO$_3$ bridgmanite. Excess Fe$_{2}$O$_3$ should produce elastic anomalies though.

Thermoelasticity of Fe2+-bearing bridgmanite

We present LDA+U calculations of high temperature elastic properties of bridgmanite with composition (Mg$_{(1-x)}$Fe$_{x}^{2+}$)SiO$_3$ for $0\le{x}\le0.125$. Results of elastic moduli and acoustic velocities for the Mg-end member (x=0) agree very well with the latest high pressure and high temperature experimental measurements. In the iron-bearing system, we focus particularly on the change in thermoelastic parameters across the state change that occurs in ferrous iron above $\sim$30 GPa, often attributed to a high-spin (HS) to intermediate spin (IS) crossover but explained by first principles calculations as a lateral displacement of substitutional iron in the perovskite cage. We show that the measured effect of this change on the equation of state of this system can be explained by the lateral displacement of substitutional iron, not by the HS to IS crossover. The calculated elastic properties of (Mg$_{0.875}$Fe$_{0.125}^{2+}$)SiO$_3$ along an adiabatic mantle geotherm, somewhat overestimate longitudinal velocities but produce densities and shear velocities quite consistent with Preliminary Reference Earth Model data throughout most of the lower mantle.

Searching for high magnetization density in bulk Fe: the new metastable Fe$_6$ phase

We report the discovery of a new allotrope of iron by first principles calculations. This phase has $Pmn2_1$ symmetry, a six-atom unit cell (hence the name Fe$_6$), and the highest magnetization density (M$_s$) among all known crystalline phases of iron. Obtained from the structural optimizations of the Fe$_3$C-cementite crystal upon carbon removal, $Pmn2_1$ Fe$_6$ is shown to result from the stabilization of a ferromagnetic FCC phase, further strained along the Bain path. Although metastable from 0 to 50 GPa, the new phase is more stable, at low pressures, than the other well-known HCP and FCC allotropes and smoothly transforms into the FCC phase under compression. If stabilized to room temperature, e.g., by interstitial impurities, Fe$_{6}$ could become the basis material for high M$_s$ rare-earth-free permanent magnets and high-impact applications such as, light-weight electric engine rotors or high-density recording media. The new phase could also be key to explain the enigmatic high M$_s$ of Fe$_{16}$N$_2$, which is currently attracting an intense research activity.

Hubbard-corrected DFT energy functionals: the LDA+U description of correlated systems

The aim of this review article is to assess the descriptive capabilities of the Hubbard-rooted LDA+U method and to clarify the conditions under which it can be expected to be most predictive. The paper illustrates the theoretical foundation of LDA+U and prototypical applications to the study of correlated materials, discusses the most relevant approximations used in its formulation, and makes a comparison with other approaches also developed for similar purposes. Open "issues" of the method are also discussed, including the calculation of the electronic couplings (the Hubbard U), the precise expression of the corrective functional and the possibility to use LDA+U for other classes of materials. The second part of the article presents recent extensions to the method and illustrates the significant improvements they have obtained in the description of several classes of different systems. The conclusive section finally discusses possible future developments of LDA+U to further enlarge its predictive power and its range of applicability.

Origin of magnetic interactions and their influence on the structural properties of Ni2MnGa and related compounds

In this work, we perform first principles DFT calculations to investigate the interplay between magnetic and structural properties in Ni2MnGa. We demonstrate that the relative stability of austenite (cubic) and non-modulated martensite (tetragonal) phases depends critically on the magnetic interactions between Mn atoms. While standard approximate DFT functionals stabilize the latter phase, a more accurate treatment of electronic localization and magnetism, obtained with DFT+U, suppresses the non-modulated tetragonal structure for the stoichiometric compound, in better agreement with the experiments. We show that the Anderson impurity model, with Mn atoms treated as magnetic impurities, can explain this observation and that the fine balance between super-exchange RKKY type interactions mediated by Ni d and Ga p orbitals determines the equilibrium structure of the crystal. The Anderson model is also demonstrated to capture the effect of the number of valence electrons per unit cell on the structural properties, often used as an empirical parameter to tune the behavior of Ni2MnGa based alloys. Finally, we show that off-stoichiometric compositions with excess Mn promote transitions to a non-modulated tetragonal structure, in agreement with experiments.

Role of electronic localization in the phosphorescence of iridium sensitizing dyes

In this work we present a systematic study of three representative iridium dyes, namely, Ir(ppy)3, FIrpic and PQIr, which are commonly used as sensitizers in organic optoelectronic devices. We show that electronic correlations play a crucial role in determining the excited-state energies in these systems, due to localization of electrons on Ir d orbitals. Electronic localization is captured by employing hybrid functionals within time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) and with Hubbard-model corrections within the delta-SCF approach. The performance of both methods are studied comparatively and shown to be in good agreement with experiment. The Hubbard-corrected functionals provide further insight into the localization of electrons and on the charge-transfer character of excited-states. The gained insight allows us to comment on envisioned functionalization strategies to improve the performance of these systems. Complementary discussions on the delta-SCF method are also presented in order to fill some of the gaps in the literature.

First principles study of electronic and structural properties of CuO

We investigate the electronic and structural properties of CuO, which shows significant deviations from the trends obeyed by other transition-metal monoxides. Using an extended Hubbard corrective functional, we uncover an orbitally ordered insulating ground state for the cubic phase of this material, which was expected but never found before. This insulating state results from a fine balance between the tendency of Cu to complete its d-shell and Hund's rule magnetism. Starting from the ground state for the cubic phase, we also study tetragonal distortions of the unit cell (recently reported in experiments), the consequent electronic reorganizations and identify the equilibrium structure. Our calculations reveal an unexpected richness of possible magnetic and orbital orders, relatively close in energy to the ground state, whose stability depends on the sign and entity of distortion.

Spin-state crossover and hyperfine interactions of ferric iron in MgSiO$_3$ perovskite

Using density functional theory plus Hubbard $U$ calculations, we show that the ground state of (Mg,Fe)(Si,Fe)O$_3$ perovskite, a major mineral phase in the Earth's lower mantle, has high-spin ferric iron ($S=5/2$) at both the dodecahedral (A) and octahedral (B) site. As the pressure increases, the B-site iron undergoes a spin-state crossover to the low-spin state ($S=1/2$), while the A-site iron remains in the high-spin state. Our calculation shows that the B-site spin-state crossover in the pressure range of 40-70 GPa is accompanied by a noticeable volume reduction and an increase in quadrupole splitting, consistent with recent X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements. The volume reduction leads to a significant softening in the bulk modulus, which suggests a possible source of seismic velocity anomalies in the lower mantle.

Koopmans' condition for density-functional theory

In approximate Kohn-Sham density-functional theory, self-interaction manifests itself as the dependence of the energy of an orbital on its fractional occupation. This unphysical behavior translates into qualitative and quantitative errors that pervade many fundamental aspects of density-functional predictions. Here, we first examine self-interaction in terms of the discrepancy between total and partial electron removal energies, and then highlight the importance of imposing the generalized Koopmans' condition -- that identifies orbital energies as opposite total electron removal energies -- to resolve this discrepancy. In the process, we derive a correction to approximate functionals that, in the frozen-orbital approximation, eliminates the unphysical occupation dependence of orbital energies up to the third order in the single-particle densities. This non-Koopmans correction brings physical meaning to single-particle energies; when applied to common local or semilocal density functionals it provides results that are in excellent agreement with experimental data -- with an accuracy comparable to that of GW many-body perturbation theory -- while providing an explicit total energy functional that preserves or improves on the description of established structural properties.

Extended DFT+U+V method with on-site and inter-site electronic interactions

In this article we introduce a generalization of the popular DFT+U method based on the extended Hubbard model that includes on-site and inter-site electronic interactions. The novel corrective Hamiltonian is designed to study systems for which electrons are not completely localized on atomic states (according to the general scheme of Mott localization) and hybridization between orbitals from different sites plays an important role. The application of the extended functional to archetypal Mott - charge-transfer (NiO) and covalently bonded insulators (Si and GaAs) demonstrates its accuracy and versatility and the possibility to obtain a unifying and equally accurate description for a broad range of very diverse systems.

The Li intercalation potential of LiMPO4 and LiMSiO4 olivines with M = Fe, Mn, Co, Ni

The Li intercalation potential of LiMPO4 and LiMSiO4 compounds with M = Fe, Mn, Co, and Ni is computed with the GGA+U method. It is found that this approach is considerably more accurate than standard LDA or GGA methods. The calculated potentials for LiFePO4, LiMnPO4 and LiCoOPO4 agree to within 0.1 V with experimental results. The LiNiPO4 potential is predicted to be above 5 V. The potentials of the silicate materials are all found to be rather high, but LiFeSiO4 and LiCoSiO4 have negligible volume change upon Li extraction.
