Some fractal thoughts about the COVID-19 infection outbreak

Some ideas are presented about the physical motivation of the apparent capacity of generalized logistic equations to describe the outbreak of the COVID-19 infection, and in general of quite many other epidemics. The main focuses here are: the complex, possibly fractal, structure of the locus describing the "contagion event set"; what can be learnt from the models of trophic webs with "herd behaviour".

Stochastic Lagrangians for Statistical Dynamics

The concept of stochastic Lagrangian and its use in statistical dynamics is illustrated theoretically, and with some examples. Dynamical variables undergoing stochastic differential equations are stochastic processes themselves, and their realization probability functional within a given time interval arises from the interplay between the deterministic parts of dynamics and noise statistics. The stochastic Lagrangian is a tool to formulate realization probabilities via functional integrals, once the statistics of noises involved in the stochastic dynamical equations is known. In principle, it allows to highlight the invariance properties of the statistical dynamics of the system. In this work, after a review of the stochastic Lagrangian formalism, some applications of it to physically relevant cases are illustrated.

Metriplectic Framework for Dissipative Magneto-Hydrodynamics

The metriplectic framework, which permits to formulate an algebraic structure for dissipative systems, is applied to visco-resistive Magneto-Hydrodynamics (MHD), adapting what had already been done for non-ideal Hydrodynamics (HD). The result is obtained by extending the HD symmetric bracket and free energy to include magnetic field dynamics and resistive dissipation. The correct equations of motion are obtained once one of the Casimirs of the Poisson bracket for ideal MHD is identified with the total thermodynamical entropy of the plasma. The metriplectic framework of MHD is shown to be invariant under the Galileo Group. The metriplectic structure also permits to obtain the asymptotic equilibria toward which the dynamics of the system evolves. This scheme is finally adapted to the two-dimensional incompressible resistive MHD, that is of major use in many applications.

Universal fluctuations in tropospheric radar measurements

Radar data collected at an experimental facility arranged on purpose suggest that the footprint of atmospheric turbulence might be encoded in the radar signal statistics. Radar data probability distributions are calculated and nicely fitted by a one parameter family of generalized Gumbel (GG) distributions, G(a). A relation between the wind strength and the measured shape parameter "a" is obtained. Strong wind fluctuations return pronounced asymmetric leptokurtic profiles, while Gaussian profiles are eventually recovered as the wind fluctuations decrease. Besides stressing the crucial impact of air turbulence for radar applications, we also confirm the adequacy of G(a) statistics for highly correlated complex systems.
