On the shape of solutions to elliptic equations in possibly non convex planar domains

In this note we prove uniqueness of the critical point for positive solutions of elliptic problems in bounded planar domains: we first examine the Poisson problem - Delta u = f(x,y) finding a geometric condition involving the curvature of the boundary and the normal derivative of f on the boundary to ensure uniqueness of the critical point. In the second part we consider stable solutions of the nonlinear problem -Delta u = f(u) in perturbation of convex domains.

Qualitative analysis on the critical points of the Robin function

Let Ω⊂RNΩ\subset\mathbb{R}^N be a smooth bounded domain with N≥2N\ge2 and Ωε=Ω\B(P,ε)Ω_ε=Ω\backslash B(P,ε) where B(P,ε)B(P,ε) is the ball centered at P∈ΩP\inΩ and radius εε. In this paper, we establish the number, location and non-degeneracy of critical points of the Robin function in ΩεΩ_ε for εε small enough. We will show that the location of PP plays a crucial role on the existence and multiplicity of the critical points. The proof of our result is a consequence of delicate estimates on the Green function near to ∂B(P,ε)\partial B(P,ε). Some applications to compute the exact number of solutions of related well-studied nonlinear elliptic problems will be showed.

Non-degeneracy and local uniqueness of positive solutions to the Lane-Emden problem in dimension two

We are concerned with the Lane-Emden problem \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δu=u^{p} &{\text{in}~Ω},\\[0.5mm] u>0 &{\text{in}~Ω},\\[0.5mm] u=0 &{\text{on}~\partial Ω}, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where Ω⊂R2Ω\subset \mathbb R^2 is a smooth bounded domain and p>1p>1 is sufficiently large. Improving some known asymptotic estimates on the solutions, we prove the non-degeneracy and local uniqueness of the multi-spikes positive solutions for general domains. Our methods mainly use ODE's theory, various local Pohozaev identities, blow-up analysis and the properties of Green's function.

On the number of critical points of stable solutions in bounded strip-like domains

In this paper we show that there exists a family of domains Ωε⊆RNΩ_{\varepsilon}\subseteq\mathbb{R}^N with N≥2N\ge2, such that the stablestable solution of the problem {−Δu=g(u)in Ωεu>0in Ωεu=0on ∂Ωε \begin{cases} -Δu= g(u)&\hbox{in }Ω_\varepsilon\\ u>0&\hbox{in }Ω_\varepsilon\\ u=0&\hbox{on }\partialΩ_\varepsilon \end{cases} admits kk critical points with k≥2k\ge2. Moreover the sets Ωε′sΩ_\varepsilon's are star-shaped and "close" to a strip as ε→0\varepsilon\to0. Next, if g(u)≡1g(u)\equiv1 and N≥3N\ge3 we exhibit a family of domain Ωε′sΩ_\varepsilon's with positivepositive meanmean curvaturecurvature and solutions uεu_\varepsilon which have kk critical points with k≥2k\ge2. In this case, the domains ΩεΩ_\varepsilon turn out to be "close" to a cylinder as ε→0\varepsilon\to0.

On the number and location of critical points of solutions of nonlinear elliptic equations in domains with a small hole

In this paper we study the following problem \begin{equation} \begin{cases} -Δu=f(u)~&\mbox{in}\ Ω_\varepsilon,\\ u>0~&\mbox{in}\ Ω_\varepsilon,\\ u=0~&\mbox{on}\ \partialΩ_\varepsilon, \end{cases} \end{equation} where Ωε=Ω\B(P,ε)Ω_\varepsilon=Ω\backslash B(P,\varepsilon), Ω⊂RNΩ\subset R^N with N≥2N\geq 2 is a smooth bounded domain, B(P,ε)B(P,\varepsilon) is the ball centered at PP and radius ε>0\varepsilon>0 and ff is a smooth nonlinearity. By some computations involving the Green function and degree theory, we compute the number and location of critical points of solutions for small ε>0\varepsilon>0.

Uniqueness of the critical point for semi-stable solution in R2\mathbb{R}^2

In this paper we show the uniqueness of the critical point for \emph{semi-stable} solutions of the problem {−Δu=f(u)in Ωu>0in Ωu=0on ∂Ω,\begin{cases} -Δu=f(u)&\text{in }Ω\\ u>0&\text{in }Ω\\ u=0&\text{on } \partialΩ,\end{cases} where Ω⊂R2Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2 is a smooth bounded domain whose boundary has \emph{nonnegative} curvature and f(0)≥0f(0)\ge0. It extends a result by Cabré-Chanillo to the case where the curvature of ∂Ω\partialΩ vanishes.

A non-variational system involving the critical Sobolev exponent. The radial case

In this paper we consider the non-variational system {−Δui=∑j=1kaijuj(N+2)/(N−2)in RN,ui>0in RN,ui∈D1,2(RN). \begin{cases} -Δu_i = \sum\limits_{j=1}^k a_{ij} u_j^{(N+2)/(N-2)} &\text{in }\mathbb R^N,\newline u_i>0 &\text{in }\mathbb R^N,\newline u_i\in D^{1,2}(\mathbb R^N). \end{cases} and we give some sufficient conditions on the matrix (aij)i,j=1,…,k(a_{ij})_{i,j=1,\dotsc ,k} which ensure the existence of solutions bifurcating from the bubble of the critical Sobolev equation.

Entire radial and nonradial solutions for systems with critical growth

In this paper we establish existence of radial and nonradial solutions to the system −Δu1=F1(u1,u2)in RN,−Δu2=F2(u1,u2)in RN,u1≥0, u2≥0in RN,u1,u2∈D1,2(RN), \begin{array}{ll} -Δu_1 = F_1(u_1,u_2) &\text{in }\mathbb{R}^N,\newline -Δu_2 = F_2(u_1,u_2) &\text{in }\mathbb{R}^N,\newline u_1\geq 0,\ u_2\geq 0 &\text{in }\mathbb{R}^N,\newline u_1,u_2\in D^{1,2}(\mathbb{R}^N), \end{array} where F1,F2F_1,F_2 are nonlinearities with critical behavior.

Nodal solutions for Lane-Emden problems in almost-annular domains

In this paper we prove an existence result to the problem {−Δu=∣u∣p−1uinΩ,u=0on∂Ω,\left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu = |u|^{p-1} u \qquad & \text{in} Ω, \\ u= 0 & \text{on} \partialΩ, \end{array} \right. where ΩΩ is a bounded domain in RN{\mathbb R}^{N} which is a perturbation of the annulus. Then there exists a sequence p1<p2<..p_1<p_2<.. with lim⁡k→+∞pk=+∞\lim\limits_{k\rightarrow+\infty}p_k=+\infty such that for any real number p>1p>1 and p≠pkp\ne p_k there exist at least one solution with mm nodal zones. In doing so, we also investigate the radial nodal solution in an annulus: we provide an estimate of its Morse index and analyze the asymptotic behavior as p→1p\to 1. Keywords: semilinear elliptic equations, nodal solutions, supercritical problems.

Symmetry breaking and Morse index of solutions of nonlinear elliptic problems in the plane

In this paper we study the problem -Δu =\left(\frac{2+α}{2}\right)^2\abs{x}^αf(λ,u), & \hbox{in}B_1 \\ u > 0, & \hbox{in}B_1 u = 0, & \hbox{on} \partial B_1 where B1B_1 is the unit ball of R2\R^2, ff is a smooth nonlinearity and $\a$, łł are real numbers with $\a>0$. From a careful study of the linearized operator we compute the Morse index of some radial solutions to \eqref{i0}. Moreover, using the bifurcation theory, we prove the existence of branches of nonradial solutions for suitable values of the positive parameter łł. The case f(λ,u)=łeuf(λ,u)=łe^u provides more detailed information.

Lane Emden problems with large exponents and singular Liouville equations

We consider the Lane-Emden Dirichlet problem -Δu = \abs{u}^{p-1}u, in B, u =0, on \partial B, where p>1p>1 and BB denotes the unit ball in $\IR^2$. We study the asymptotic behavior of the least energy nodal radial solution upu_p, as p→+∞p\rightarrow +\infty. Assuming w.l.o.g. that up(0)<0u_p(0) < 0, we prove that a suitable rescaling of the negative part up−u_p^- converges to the unique regular solution of the Liouville equation in $\IR^2$, while a suitable rescaling of the positive part up+u_p^+ converges to a (singular) solution of a singular Liouville equation in $\IR^2$. We also get exact asymptotic values for the L∞L^\infty-norms of up−u_p^- and up+u_p^+, as well as an asymptotic estimate of the energy. Finally, we have that the nodal line $\N_p:={x\in B : \abs{x}= r_p}$ shrinks to a point and we compute the rate of convergence of rpr_p.

Exact multiplicity results for a singularly perturbed Neumann problem

In this paper we study the number of the boundary single peak solutions of the problem {align*} {cases} -\varepsilon^2 Δu + u = u^p, &\text{in}Ωu > 0, &\text{in}Ω\frac{\partial u}{\partial ν} = 0,& \text{on}\partial Ω{cases} {align*} for ε\varepsilon small and pp subcritical. Under some suitable assumptions on the shape of the boundary near a critical point of the mean curvature, we are able to prove exact multiplicity results. Note that the degeneracy of the critical point is allowed.

Multiple blow-up phenomena for the sinh-Poisson equation

We consider the sinh-Poisson equation $$(P)_λ\quad -Δu=\la\sinh u\ \hbox{in}\ Ω,\ u=0\ \hbox{on}\ \partialΩ,$$ where ΩΩ is a smooth bounded domain in $\rr^2$ and λλ is a small positive parameter. If 0∈Ω0\inΩ and ΩΩ is symmetric with respect to the origin, for any integer kk if $\la$ is small enough, we construct a family of solutions to $(P)_\la$ which blows-up at the origin whose positive mass is 4πk(k−1)4πk(k-1) and negative mass is 4πk(k+1).4πk(k+1). It gives a complete answer to an open problem formulated by Jost-Wang-Ye-Zhou in [Calc. Var. PDE (2008) 31: 263-276].

Positive constrained minimizers for supercritical problems in the ball

We provide a sufficient condition for the existence of a positive solution to −Δu+V(∣x∣)u=up-Δu+V(|x|) u=u^p in B1B_1, when p is large enough. Here B1B_1 is the unit ball of RnR^n, n greater or equal to 2, and we deal both with Neumann and Dirichlet homogeneous boundary conditions. The solution turns to be a constrained minimum of the associated energy functional. As an application we show that, in case V(∣x∣)V(|x|) is smooth, nonnegative and not identically zero, and p is sufficiently large, the Neumann problem always admits a solution.
