Qualitative analysis on the critical points of the Robin function

Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ be a smooth bounded domain with $N\ge2$ and $Ω_ε=Ω\backslash B(P,ε)$ where $B(P,ε)$ is the ball centered at $P\inΩ$ and radius $ε$. In this paper, we establish the number, location and non-degeneracy of critical points of the Robin function in $Ω_ε$ for $ε$ small enough. We will show that the location of $P$ plays a crucial role on the existence and multiplicity of the critical points. The proof of our result is a consequence of delicate estimates on the Green function near to $\partial B(P,ε)$. Some applications to compute the exact number of solutions of related well-studied nonlinear elliptic problems will be showed.

Symmetry and monotonicity results for solutions of semilinear PDEs in sector-like domains

In this manuscript we consider semilinear PDEs, with a convex nonlinearity, in a sector-like domain. Using cylindrical coordinates $(r, θ, z)$, we investigate the shape of solutions whose derivative in $θ$ vanishes at the boundary. We prove that any solution with Morse index less than two must be either independent of $θ$ or strictly monotone with respect to $θ$. In the special case of a planar domain, the result holds in a circular sector as well as in an annular, and it can also be extended to a rectangular domain. The corresponding problem in higher dimensions is also considered, as well as an extension to unbounded domains. The proof is based on a rotating-plane argument: a convenient manifold is introduced in order to avoid overlapping the domain with its reflected image in the case when its opening is larger than $π$.

Bifurcation analysis of the Hardy-Sobolev equation

In this paper, we prove existence of multiple non-radial solutions to the Hardy-Sobolev equation $$\begin{cases} -Δu-\displaystyle\frac γ{|x|^2}u=\displaystyle\frac{1}{|x|^s}|u|^{p_s-2}u & \text{ in } \mathbb{R}^N\setminus\{0\},\\ u\geq 0, & \end{cases}$$ where $N\geq 3$, $s\in[0,2)$, $p_s=\frac{2(N-s)}{N-2}$ and $γ\in (-\infty,\frac{(N-2)^2} 4)$. We extend results of E.N. Dancer, F. Gladiali, M. Grossi, Proc. Roy. Soc. Edinburgh Sect. A 147 (2017) where only the case $s=0$ is considered. Moreover, thanks to monotonicity properties of the solutions, we separate two branches of non-radial solutions.

On a singular eigenvalue problem and its applications in computing the Morse index of solutions to semilinear PDE's, Part II

By using a characterization of the Morse index and the degeneracy in terms of a singular one dimensional eigenvalue problem given in a previous paper, we give a lower bound for the Morse index of radial solutions to Hénon type problems \[ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu = |x|^αf(u) \qquad & \text{ in } Ω, u= 0 & \text{ on } \partial Ω, \end{array} \right. \] where $Ω$ is a bounded radially symmetric domain of $\mathbb R^N$ ($N\ge 2$), $α>0$ and $f$ is a real function. From this estimate we get that the Morse index of nodal radial solutions to this problem goes to $\infty$ as $α\to \infty$. Concerning the real Hénon problem, $f(u)= |u|^{p-1}u$, we prove radial nondegeneracy, we show that the radial Morse index is equal to the number of nodal zones and we get that a least energy nodal solution is not radial.

Asymptotic profile and Morse index of nodal radial solutions to the Hénon problem

We compute the Morse index of nodal radial solutions to the Hénon problem \[\left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu = |x|^α|u|^{p-1} u \qquad & \text{ in } B, \newline u= 0 & \text{ on } \partial B, \end{array} \right. \] where $B$ stands for the unit ball in ${\mathbb R}^N$ in dimension $N\ge 3$, $α>0$ and $p$ is near at the threshold exponent for existence of solutions $p_α=\frac{N+2+2α}{N-2}$, obtaining that \begin{align*} m(u_p) & = m \sum\limits_{j=0}^{1+\left[α/{2}\right]} N_j \quad & \mbox{ if $α$ is not an even integer, or} \newline m(u_p)& = m\sum\limits_{j=0}^{ α/2} N_j + (m-1) N_{1+α/ 2} & \mbox{ if $α$ is an even number.} \end{align*} Here $N_j$ denotes the multiplicity of the spherical harmonics of order $j$. The computation builds on a characterization of the Morse index by means of a one dimensional singular eigenvalue problem, and is carried out by a detailed picture of the asymptotic behavior of both the solution and the singular eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. In particular it is shown that nodal radial solutions have multiple blow-up at the origin, where each node converges (up to a suitable rescaling) to the bubble shaped solution of a limit problem. As side outcome we see that solutions are nondegenerate for $p$ near at $p_α$, and we give an existence result in perturbed balls.

A non-variational system involving the critical Sobolev exponent. The radial case

In this paper we consider the non-variational system $$ \begin{cases} -Δu_i = \sum\limits_{j=1}^k a_{ij} u_j^{(N+2)/(N-2)} &\text{in }\mathbb R^N,\newline u_i>0 &\text{in }\mathbb R^N,\newline u_i\in D^{1,2}(\mathbb R^N). \end{cases} $$ and we give some sufficient conditions on the matrix $(a_{ij})_{i,j=1,\dotsc ,k}$ which ensure the existence of solutions bifurcating from the bubble of the critical Sobolev equation.

Entire radial and nonradial solutions for systems with critical growth

In this paper we establish existence of radial and nonradial solutions to the system $$ \begin{array}{ll} -Δu_1 = F_1(u_1,u_2) &\text{in }\mathbb{R}^N,\newline -Δu_2 = F_2(u_1,u_2) &\text{in }\mathbb{R}^N,\newline u_1\geq 0,\ u_2\geq 0 &\text{in }\mathbb{R}^N,\newline u_1,u_2\in D^{1,2}(\mathbb{R}^N), \end{array} $$ where $F_1,F_2$ are nonlinearities with critical behavior.

Nodal solutions for Lane-Emden problems in almost-annular domains

In this paper we prove an existence result to the problem $$\left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu = |u|^{p-1} u \qquad & \text{in} Ω, \\ u= 0 & \text{on} \partialΩ, \end{array} \right. $$ where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in ${\mathbb R}^{N}$ which is a perturbation of the annulus. Then there exists a sequence $p_1<p_2<..$ with $\lim\limits_{k\rightarrow+\infty}p_k=+\infty$ such that for any real number $p>1$ and $p\ne p_k$ there exist at least one solution with $m$ nodal zones. In doing so, we also investigate the radial nodal solution in an annulus: we provide an estimate of its Morse index and analyze the asymptotic behavior as $p\to 1$. Keywords: semilinear elliptic equations, nodal solutions, supercritical problems.

Nonradial sign changing solutions to Lane Emden equation

In this paper we prove the existence of continua of nonradial solutions for the Lane-Emden equation. In a first result we show that there are infinitely many global continua detaching from the curve of radial solutions with any prescribed number of nodal zones. Next, using the fixed point index in cone, we produce nonradial solutions with a new type of symmetry. This result also applies to solutions with fixed signed, showing that the set of solutions to the Lane Emden problem has a very rich and complex structure.

Separation of branches of O(N-1)-invariant solutions for a semilinear elliptic equation

We consider a semilinear elliptic problem in an annulus of R^N, with N>1. Recent results ensure that there exists a sequence p_k of exponents of the nonlinear term at which a nonradial bifurcation from the radial solution occurs. Exploiting the properties of O(N-1)-invariant spherical harmonics, we introduce two suitable cones K^1 and $K^2$ of O(N-1)-invariant functions that allow to separate the branches of bifurcating solutions from the others, getting the unboundedness of these branches.

Symmetry breaking and Morse index of solutions of nonlinear elliptic problems in the plane

In this paper we study the problem -Δu =\left(\frac{2+α}{2}\right)^2\abs{x}^αf(λ,u), & \hbox{in}B_1 \\ u > 0, & \hbox{in}B_1 u = 0, & \hbox{on} \partial B_1 where $B_1$ is the unit ball of $\R^2$, $f$ is a smooth nonlinearity and $\a$, $ł$ are real numbers with $\a>0$. From a careful study of the linearized operator we compute the Morse index of some radial solutions to \eqref{i0}. Moreover, using the bifurcation theory, we prove the existence of branches of nonradial solutions for suitable values of the positive parameter $ł$. The case $f(λ,u)=łe^u$ provides more detailed information.

On a general SU(3) Toda System

We study the following generalized $SU(3)$ Toda System $$ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu=2e^u+μe^v & \hbox{ in }\R^2\\ -Δv=2e^v+μe^u & \hbox{ in }\R^2\\ \int_{\R^2}e^u<+\infty,\ \int_{\R^2}e^v<+\infty \end{array}\right. $$ where $μ>-2$. We prove the existence of radial solutions bifurcating from the radial solution $(\log \frac{64}{(2+μ) (8+|x|^2)^2}, \log \frac{64}{ (2+μ) (8+|x|^2)^2})$ at the values $μ=μ_n=2\frac{2-n-n^2}{2+n+n^2},\ n\in\N $.

On the number of peaks of the eigenfunctions of the linearized Gel'fand problem

We derive a second order estimate for the first m eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the linearized Gel'fand problem associated to solutions which blow-up at m points. This allows us to determine, in some suitable situations, some qualitative properties of the first m eigenfunctions as the number of points of concentration or the multiplicity of the eigenvalue .

Symmetry results for cooperative elliptic systems in unbounded domains

In this paper we prove symmetry results for classical solutions of semilinear cooperative elliptic systems in R^N, or in the exterior of a ball. We consider the case of fully coupled systems and nonlinearities which are either convex or have a convex derivative. The solutions are shown to be foliated Schwarz symmetric if a bound on their Morse index holds. As a consequence of the symmetry results we also obtain some nonexistence theorems.

Morse indices of multiple blow-up solutions to the two-dimensional Gel'fand problem

Blow-up solutions to the two-dimensional Gel'fand problem are studied. It is known that the location of the blow-up points of these solutions is related to a Hamiltonian function involving the Green function of the domain. We show that this implies an equivalence between the Morse indices of the solutions and the associated critical points of the Hamiltonian.
