On the shape of solutions to elliptic equations in possibly non convex planar domains

In this note we prove uniqueness of the critical point for positive solutions of elliptic problems in bounded planar domains: we first examine the Poisson problem - Delta u = f(x,y) finding a geometric condition involving the curvature of the boundary and the normal derivative of f on the boundary to ensure uniqueness of the critical point. In the second part we consider stable solutions of the nonlinear problem -Delta u = f(u) in perturbation of convex domains.

On the number of critical points of stable solutions in bounded strip-like domains

In this paper we show that there exists a family of domains Ωε⊆RNΩ_{\varepsilon}\subseteq\mathbb{R}^N with N≥2N\ge2, such that the stablestable solution of the problem {−Δu=g(u)in Ωεu>0in Ωεu=0on ∂Ωε \begin{cases} -Δu= g(u)&\hbox{in }Ω_\varepsilon\\ u>0&\hbox{in }Ω_\varepsilon\\ u=0&\hbox{on }\partialΩ_\varepsilon \end{cases} admits kk critical points with k≥2k\ge2. Moreover the sets Ωε′sΩ_\varepsilon's are star-shaped and "close" to a strip as ε→0\varepsilon\to0. Next, if g(u)≡1g(u)\equiv1 and N≥3N\ge3 we exhibit a family of domain Ωε′sΩ_\varepsilon's with positivepositive meanmean curvaturecurvature and solutions uεu_\varepsilon which have kk critical points with k≥2k\ge2. In this case, the domains ΩεΩ_\varepsilon turn out to be "close" to a cylinder as ε→0\varepsilon\to0.

Uniqueness of the critical point for semi-stable solution in R2\mathbb{R}^2

In this paper we show the uniqueness of the critical point for \emph{semi-stable} solutions of the problem {−Δu=f(u)in Ωu>0in Ωu=0on ∂Ω,\begin{cases} -Δu=f(u)&\text{in }Ω\\ u>0&\text{in }Ω\\ u=0&\text{on } \partialΩ,\end{cases} where Ω⊂R2Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2 is a smooth bounded domain whose boundary has \emph{nonnegative} curvature and f(0)≥0f(0)\ge0. It extends a result by Cabré-Chanillo to the case where the curvature of ∂Ω\partialΩ vanishes.
