Benjamin-Feir instability of Stokes waves in finite depth

Whitham and Benjamin predicted in 1967 that small-amplitude periodic traveling Stokes waves of the 2d-gravity water waves equations are linearly unstable with respect to long-wave perturbations, if the depth $\mathtt h$ is larger than a critical threshold $\mathtt h_{WB} \approx 1.363$. In this paper we completely describe, for any value of $\mathtt h > 0$, the four eigenvalues close to zero of the linearized equations at the Stokes wave, as the Floquet exponent $μ$ is turned on. We prove in particular the existence of a unique depth $\mathtt h_{WB}$, which coincides with the one predicted by Whitham and Benjamin, such that, for any $0 < \mathtt h < \mathtt h_{WB}$, the eigenvalues close to zero remain purely imaginary and, for any $\mathtt h > \mathtt h_{WB}$, a pair of non-purely imaginary eigenvalues depicts a closed figure "8", parameterized by the Floquet exponent. As $\mathtt h \to \mathtt h_{WB}^+$ this figure "8" collapses to the origin of the complex plane. The proof combines a symplectic version of Kato's perturbative theory to compute the eigenvalues of a $4 \times 4$ Hamiltonian and reversible matrix, and KAM inspired transformations to block-diagonalize it. The four eigenvalues have all the same size $O(μ)$ - unlike the infinitely deep water case in [6]- and the correct Benjamin-Feir phenomenon appears only after one non-perturbative block-diagonalization step. In addition one has to track, along the whole proof, the explicit dependence of the entries of the $4 \times 4$ reduced matrix with respect to the depth $\mathtt h$.

Pure gravity traveling quasi-periodic water waves with constant vorticity

We prove the existence of small amplitude time quasi-periodic solutions of the pure gravity water waves equations with constant vorticity, for a bidimensional fluid over a flat bottom delimited by a space periodic free interface. Using a Nash-Moser implicit function iterative scheme we construct traveling nonlinear waves which pass through each other slightly deforming and retaining forever a quasiperiodic structure. These solutions exist for any fixed value of depth and gravity and restricting the vorticity parameter to a Borel set of asymptotically full Lebesgue measure.

Quasi-periodic solutions of nonlinear wave equations on the d-dimensional torus

The main result of this research Monograph is the existence of small amplitude time quasi-periodic solutions for autonomous nonlinear wave equations $$ u_{tt} - Δu + V(x) u + g(x, u) = 0 \, , \quad x \in T^d \, , \quad g (x,u) = a(x) u^3 + O(u^4 ) , $$ in any space dimension and with a multiplicative potential. The proof is based on a Nash-Moser implicit function scheme. A key step is the construction of an approximate right inverse of the linearized operators obtained at any step of the iteration. In order to avoid the difficulty posed by the violation of the second order Melnikov non-resonance conditions we develop a multiscale inductive approach á la Bourgain. A feature of the Monograph is to present the proofs, techniques and ideas developed in a self-contained and expanded manner.

Large KAM tori for perturbations of the dNLS equation

We prove that small, semi-linear Hamiltonian perturbations of the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (dNLS) equation on the circle have an abundance of invariant tori of any size and (finite) dimension which support quasi-periodic solutions. When compared with previous results the novelty consists in considering perturbations which do not satisfy any symmetry condition (they may depend on $x$ in an arbitrary way) and need not be analytic. The main difficulty is posed by pairs of almost resonant dNLS frequencies. The proof is based on the integrability of the dNLS equation, in particular the fact that the nonlinear part of the Birkhoff coordinates is one smoothing. We implement a Newton-Nash-Moser iteration scheme to construct the invariant tori. The key point is the reduction of linearized operators, coming up in the iteration scheme, to $ 2 \times 2 $ block diagonal ones with constant coefficients together with sharp asymptotic estimates of their eigenvalues.

KAM for autonomous quasi-linear perturbations of mKdV

We prove the existence of Cantor families of small amplitude, linearly stable, quasi-periodic solutions of quasi-linear (also called strongly nonlinear) autonomous Hamiltonian differentiable perturbations of the mKdV equation. The proof is based on a weak version of the Birkhoff normal form algorithm and a nonlinear Nash-Moser iteration. The analysis of the linearized operators at each step of the iteration is achieved by pseudo-differential operator techniques and a linear KAM reducibility scheme.

An abstract Nash-Moser theorem and quasi-periodic solutions for NLW and NLS on compact Lie groups and homogeneous manifold

We prove an abstract Implicit Function Theorem with parameters for smooth operators defined on sequence scales, modeled for the search of quasi-periodic solutions of PDEs. The tame estimates required for the inverse linearised operators at each step of the iterative scheme are deduced via a multiscale inductive argument. The Cantor like set of parameters where the solution exists is defined in a non inductive way. This formulation completely decouples the iterative scheme from the measure theoretical analysis of the parameters where the small divisors non-resonance conditions are verified. As an application, we deduce the existence of quasi-periodic solutions for forced NLW and NLS equations on any compact Lie group or manifold which is homogeneous with respect to a compact Lie group, extending previous results valid only for tori. A basic tool of harmonic analysis is the highest weight theory for the irreducible representations of compact Lie groups.

Existence and stability of quasi-periodic solutions for derivative wave equations

In this note we present a new KAM result which proves the existence of Cantor families of small amplitude, analytic, quasi-periodic solutions of derivative wave equations, with zero Lyapunov exponents and whose linearized equation is reducible to constant coefficients. In turn, this result is derived by an abstract KAM theorem for infinite dimensional reversible dynamical systems.

KAM for quasi-linear and fully nonlinear forced KdV

We prove the existence of quasi-periodic, small amplitude, solutions for quasi-linear and fully nonlinear forced perturbations of KdV equations. For Hamiltonian or reversible nonlinearities we also obtain the linear stability of the solutions. The proofs are based on a combination of different ideas and techniques: (i) a Nash-Moser iterative scheme in Sobolev scales. (ii) A regularization procedure, which conjugates the linearized operator to a differential operator with constant coefficients plus a bounded remainder. These transformations are obtained by changes of variables induced by diffeomorphisms of the torus and pseudo-differential operators. (iii) A reducibility KAM scheme, which completes the reduction to constant coefficients of the linearized operator, providing a sharp asymptotic expansion of the perturbed eigenvalues.

Sobolev quasi periodic solutions of multidimensional wave equations with a multiplicative potential

We prove the existence of quasi-periodic solutions for wave equations with a multiplicative potential on T^d, d \geq 1, and finitely differentiable nonlinearities, quasi-periodically forced in time. The only external parameter is the length of the frequency vector. The solutions have Sobolev regularity both in time and space. The proof is based on a Nash-Moser iterative scheme as in [5]. The key tame estimates for the inverse linearized operators are obtained by a multiscale inductive argument, which is more difficult than for NLS due to the dispersion relation of the wave equation. We prove the "separation properties" of the small divisors assuming weaker non-resonance conditions than in [11].

Quasi-periodic solutions with Sobolev regularity of NLS on T^d with a multiplicative potential

We prove the existence of quasi-periodic solutions for Schroedinger equations with a multiplicative potential on T^d, d \geq 1, merely differentiable nonlinearities, and tangential frequencies constrained along a pre-assigned direction. The solutions have only Sobolev regularity both in time and space. If the nonlinearity and the potential are infinitely many times differentiable so are the solutions. The proofs are based on an improved Nash-Moser iterative scheme, which assumes the weakest tame estimates for the inverse linearized operators ("Green functions") along scales of Sobolev spaces. The key off-diagonal decay estimates of the Green functions are proved via a new multiscale inductive analysis. The main novelty concerns the measure and "complexity" estimates.
