Numerical studies on the finite-temperature CP restoration in 4D SU(N) gauge theory at $θ=π$

Recent studies on the 't Hooft anomaly matching condition have suggested a nontrivial phase structure in 4D SU($N$) gauge theory at $θ=π$. In the large-$N$ limit, it has been found that CP symmetry at $θ=π$ is broken in the confined phase, while it restores in the deconfined phase, which is indeed one of the possible scenarios. However, at small $N$, one may find other situations that are consistent with the consequence of the anomaly matching condition. Here we investigate this issue for $N=2$ by direct lattice calculations. The crucial point to note is that the CP restoration can be probed by the sudden change of the tail of the topological charge distribution at $θ=0$, which can be seen by simulating the theory at imaginary $θ$ without the sign problem. Our results suggest that the CP restoration at $θ=π$ occurs at temperature higher than the deconfining temperature unlike the situation in the large-$N$ limit.

Classically emulated digital quantum simulation for screening and confinement in the Schwinger model with a topological term

We perform digital quantum simulation, using a classical simulator, to study screening and confinement in a gauge theory with a topological term, focusing on ($1+1$)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (Schwinger model) with a theta term. We compute the ground state energy in the presence of probe charges to estimate the potential between them, via adiabatic state preparation. We compare our simulation results and analytical predictions for a finite volume, finding good agreements. In particular our result in the massive case shows a linear behavior for non-integer charges and a non-linear behavior for integer charges, consistently with the expected confinement (screening) behavior for non-integer (integer) charges.

Classically Emulated Digital Quantum Simulation of the Schwinger Model with Topological Term via Adiabatic State Preparation

We perform a digital quantum simulation of a gauge theory with a topological term in Minkowski spacetime, which is practically inaccessible by standard lattice Monte Carlo simulations. We focus on $1+1$ dimensional quantum electrodynamics with the $θ$-term known as the Schwinger model. We construct the true vacuum state of a lattice Schwinger model using adiabatic state preparation which, in turn, allows us to compute an expectation value of the fermion mass operator with respect to the vacuum. Upon taking a continuum limit we find that our result in massless case agrees with the known exact result. In massive case, we find an agreement with mass perturbation theory in small mass regime and deviations in large mass regime. We estimate computational costs required to take a reasonable continuum limit. Our results imply that digital quantum simulation is already useful tool to explore non-perturbative aspects of gauge theories with real time and topological terms.

String theory, $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and Riemann hypothesis

We discuss new relations among string theory, four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) and the Riemann hypothesis. It is known that the Riemann hypothesis is equivalent to an inequality for the sum of divisors function $σ(n)$. Based on previous results in literature, we focus on the fact that $σ(n)$ appears in a problem of counting supersymmetric states in the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM with $SU(3)$ gauge group: the Schur limit of the superconformal index plays a role of a generating function of $σ(n)$. Then assuming the Riemann hypothesis gives bounds on information on the $1/8$-BPS states in the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. The AdS/CFT correspondence further connects the Riemann hypothesis to the type IIB superstring theory on $AdS_5 \times S^5$. In particular, the Riemann hypothesis implies a miraculous cancellation among Kaluza-Klein modes of the supergravity multiplet and D3-branes wrapping supersymmetric cycles in the string theory. We also discuss possibilities to gain new insights on the Riemann hypothesis from the physics side.

Negative string tension of higher-charge Schwinger model via digital quantum simulation

We study some properties of generalized global symmetry for the charge-$q$ Schwinger model in the Hamiltonian formalism, which is the $(1+1)$-dimensional quantum electrodynamics with a charge-$q$ Dirac fermion. This model has the $\mathbb{Z}_q$ $1$-form symmetry, which is a remnant of the electric $U(1)$ $1$-form symmetry in the pure Maxwell theory. It is known that if we put the theory on closed space, then the Hilbert space is decomposed into $q$ distinct sectors, called universes and some states with higher energy density do not decay to the ground state due to the selection rule of the $1$-form symmetry. Even with open boundaries, we can observe the stability of such states by seeing a negative string tension behavior, meaning that opposite charges repel with each other. We develop a method based on the adiabatic state preparation to see this feature with digital quantum simulation and confirm it using a classical simulator of quantum devices. Especially, we measure local energy density and see how it jumps between inside and outside of insertion of the probe charges. We explicitly see that the energy density inside is lower than the outside one. This is a clear signature of the negative string tension.

Evidence for a Non-Supersymmetric 5d CFT from Deformations of 5d $SU(2)$ SYM

We study supersymmetry breaking deformations of the $\mathcal{N}=1$ 5d fixed point known as $E_1$, the UV completion of $SU(2)$ super-Yang-Mills. The phases of the non-supersymmetric theory can be characterized by Chern-Simons terms involving background $U(1)$ gauge fields, allowing us to identify a phase transition at strong coupling. We propose that this may signify the emergence of a non-trivial, non-supersymmetric CFT in $d=4+1$ dimensions.

ABJ Theory in the Higher Spin Limit

We study the conjecture made by Chang, Minwalla, Sharma, and Yin on the duality between the N=6 Vasiliev higher spin theory on AdS_4 and the N=6 Chern-Simons-matter theory, so-called ABJ theory, with gauge group U(N) x U(N+M). Building on our earlier results on the ABJ partition function, we develop the systematic 1/M expansion, corresponding to the weak coupling expansion in the higher spin theory, and compare the leading 1/M correction, with our proposed prescription, to the one-loop free energy of the N=6 Vasiliev theory. We find an agreement between the two sides up to an ambiguity that appears in the bulk one-loop calculation.

Borel summability of perturbative series in 4d N=2 and 5d N=1 theories

We study weak coupling perturbative series in 4d N=2 and 5d N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories with Lagrangians. We prove that the perturbative series of these theories in zero instanton sector are Borel summable for various observables. Our result for 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ case supports an expectation from a recent proposal on a semiclassical realization of infrared renormalons in QCD-like theories, where the semiclassical solution does not exist in N=2 theories and the perturbative series are unambiguous, namely Borel summable. We also prove that the perturbative series in arbitrary number of instanton sector are Borel summable for a wide class of theories. It turns out that exact results can be obtained by summing over the Borel resummations in each number of instanton sector.

Exact relations between M2-brane theories with and without Orientifolds

We study partition functions of low-energy effective theories of M2-branes, whose type IIB brane constructions include orientifolds. We mainly focus on circular quiver superconformal Chern-Simons theory on $S^3$, whose gauge group is $O(2N+1)\times USp(2N)\times \cdots \times O(2N+1)\times USp(2N)$. This theory is the natural generalization of the $\mathcal{N}=5$ ABJM theory with the gauge group $O(2N+1)_{2k} \times USp(2N)_{-k}$. We find that the partition function of this type of theory has a simple relation to the one of the M2-brane theory without the orientifolds, whose gauge group is $U(N)\times \cdots \times U(N)$. By using this relation, we determine an exact form of the grand partition function of the $O(2N+1)_{2} \times USp(2N)_{-1}$ ABJM theory, where its supersymmetry is expected to be enhanced to $\mathcal{N}=6$. As another interesting application, we discuss that our result gives a natural physical interpretation of a relation between the grand partition functions of the $U(N+1)_4 \times U(N)_{-4}$ ABJ theory and $U(N)_2 \times U(N)_{-2}$ ABJM theory, recently conjectured by Grassi-Hatsuda-Mariño. We also argue that partition functions of $\hat{A}_3$ quiver theories have representations in terms of an ideal Fermi gas systems associated with $\hat{D}$-type quiver theories and this leads an interesting relation between certain $U(N)$ and $USp(2N)$ supersymmetric gauge theories.

How to resum perturbative series in 3d N=2 Chern-Simons matter theories

Continuing the work arXiv:1603.06207, we study perturbative series in general 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Chern-Simons matter theory with $U(1)_R$ symmetry, which is given by a power series expansion of inverse Chern-Simons levels. We find that the perturbative series are usually non-Borel summable along positive real axis for various observables. Alternatively we prove that the perturbative series are always Borel summable along negative (positive) imaginary axis for positive (negative) Chern-Simons levels. It turns out that the Borel resummations along this direction are the same as exact results and therefore correct ways of resumming the perturbative series.

Exact Path Integral for 3D Quantum Gravity II

Continuing the work arXiv:1504.05991, we discuss various aspects of three dimensional quantum gravity partition function in AdS in the semi-classical limit. The partition function is holomorphic and is the one which we obtained by using the localization technique of Chern-Simons theory in arXiv:1504.05991. We obtain a good expression for it in the summation form over Virasoro characters for the vacuum and primaries. A key ingredient for that is an interpretation of boundary localized fermion. We also check that the coefficients in the summation form over Virasoro characters of the partition function are positive integers and satisfy the Cardy formula. These give physical interpretation that these coefficients represent the number of primary fields in the dual CFT in the large k limit.

Identification of Bulk coupling constant in Higher Spin/ABJ correspondence

We study the conjectured duality between the $\mathcal{N}=6$ Vasiliev higher spin theory on $AdS_4$ and 3d $\mathcal{N}=6$ superconformal Chern-Simons matter theory known as the ABJ theory. We discuss how the parameters in the ABJ theory should be related to the bulk coupling constant in the Vasiliev theory. For this purpose, we compute two-point function of stress tensor in the ABJ theory by using supersymmmetry localization. Our result justifies the proposal by arXiv:1504.00365 and determine the unknown coefficient in the previous work.

Interpolating function and Stokes Phenomena

When we have two expansions of physical quantity around two different points in parameter space, we can usually construct a family of functions, which interpolates the both expansions. In this paper we study analytic structures of such interpolating functions and discuss their physical implications. We propose that the analytic structures of the interpolating functions provide information on analytic property and Stokes phenomena of the physical quantity, which we approximate by the interpolating functions. We explicitly check our proposal for partition functions of zero-dimensional $φ^4$ theory and Sine-Gordon model. In the zero dimensional Sine-Gordon model, we compare our result with a recent result from resurgence analysis. We also comment on construction of interpolating function in Borel plane.

Large N non-perturbative effects in $\mathcal{N}=4$ superconformal Chern-Simons theories

We investigate the large $N$ instanton effects of partition functions in a class of $\mathcal{N}=4$ circular quiver Chern-Simons theories on a three-sphere. Our analysis is based on the supersymmetry localization and the Fermi-gas formalism. The resulting matrix model can be regarded as a two-parameter deformation of the ABJM matrix model, and has richer non-perturbative structures. Based on a systematic semi-classical analysis, we find analytic expressions of membrane instanton corrections. We also exactly compute the partition function for various cases and find some exact forms of worldsheet instanton corrections, which appear as quantum mechanical non-perturbative corrections in the Fermi-gas system.

Supersymmetric index on T^2 x S^2 and elliptic genus

We study partition function of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric field theory on $T^2 \times S^2$. By applying supersymmetry localization, we show that the $T^2 \times S^2$ partition function is given by elliptic genus of certain two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ theory. As an application, we discuss a relation between 4d Seiberg duality duality and 2d $(0,2)$ triality, proposed by Gadde, Gukov and Putrov. In other examples, we identify 4d theories giving elliptic genera of K3, M-strings and E-strings. In the example of K3, we find that there are two 4d theories giving the elliptic genus of K3. This would imply new four-dimensional duality.

Direct derivation of "mirror" ABJ partition function

We study the partition function of the three-dimensional N=6 U(N)_k x U(N+M)_{-k} superconformal Chern-Simons matter theory known as the ABJ theory. We prove that the ABJ partition function on S^3 is exactly the same as a formula recently proposed by Awata, Hirano and Shigemori. While this formula was previously obtained by an analytic continuation from the L(2,1) lens space matrix model, we directly derive this by using a generalization of the Cauchy determinant identity. We also give an interpretation for the formula from brane picture.

Exact results on ABJ theory and the refined topological string

We study the partition function of the ABJ theory, which is the N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons matter theory with gauge group U(N)xU(N+M) and Chern-Simons levels (k,-k). We exactly compute the ABJ partition function on a three sphere for various k, M and N via the Fermi gas approach. By using these exact data, we show that the ABJ partition function is completely determined by the refined topological string on local P^1 x P^1, including membrane instanton effects in the M-theory dual.

Higgs branch localization of 3d N=2 theories

We study N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories on squashed 3-sphere and S^1xS^2. Recent studies have shown that the partition functions in a class of N=2 theories have factorized forms in terms of vortex and anti-vortex partition functions by explicitly evaluating matrix integrals obtained from Coulomb branch localization. We directly derive this structure by performing Higgs branch localization. It turns out that more general N=2 theories have this factorization property. We also discuss the factorization of supersymmetric Wilson loop.

Instanton Effects in Orbifold ABJM Theory

We study the partition function of the orbifold ABJM theory on $S^3$, which is the $\mathcal{N}=4$ necklace quiver Chern-Simons-matter theory with alternating levels, in the Fermi gas formalism. We find that the grand potential of the orbifold ABJM theory is expressed explicitly in terms of that of the ABJM theory. As shown previously, the ABJM grand potential consists of the naive but primary non-oscillatory term and the subsidiary infinitely-replicated oscillatory terms. We find that the subsidiary oscillatory terms of the ABJM theory actually give a non-oscillatory primary term of the orbifold ABJM theory. Also, interestingly, the perturbative part in the ABJM theory results in a novel instanton contribution in the orbifold theory. We also present a physical interpretation for the non-perturbative instanton effects.

On Perturbation theory improved by Strong coupling expansion

In theoretical physics, we sometimes have two perturbative expansions of physical quantity around different two points in parameter space. In terms of the two perturbative expansions, we introduce a new type of smooth interpolating function consistent with the both expansions, which includes the standard Padé approximant and fractional power of polynomial method constructed by Sen as special cases. We point out that we can construct enormous number of such interpolating functions in principle while the "best" approximation for the exact answer of the physical quantity should be unique among the interpolating functions. We propose a criterion to determine the "best" interpolating function, which is applicable except some situations even if we do not know the exact answer. It turns out that our criterion works for various examples including specific heat in two-dimensional Ising model, average plaquette in four-dimensional SU(3) pure Yang-Mills theory on lattice and free energy in c=1 string theory at self-dual radius. We also mention possible applications of the interpolating functions to system with phase transition.

3d superconformal indices and isomorphisms of M2-brane theories

We test several expected isomorphisms between the U(N)xU(N) ABJM theory and (SU(N)xSU(N))/Z_N theory including the BLG theory by comparing their superconformal indices. From moduli space analysis, it is expected that this equivalence can hold if and only if the rank N and Chern-Simons level k are coprime. We also calculate the index of the ABJ theory and investigate whether some theories with identical moduli spaces are isomorphic or not.

A new look at instantons and large-N limit

We analyze instantons in the very strongly coupled large-$N$ limit ($N\to\infty$ with $g^2$ fixed) of large-$N$ gauge theories, where the effect of the instantons remains finite. By using the exact partition function of four-dimensional ${\cal N}=2^*$ gauge theories as a concrete example, we demonstrate that each instanton sector in the very strongly coupled large-$N$ limit is related to the one in the 't Hooft limit ($N\to\infty$ with $g^2N$ fixed) through a simple analytic continuation. Furthermore we show the equivalence between the instanton partition functions of a pair of large-$N$ gauge theories related by an orbifold projection. This can open up a new way to analyze the partition functions of low/non-supersymmetric theories. We also discuss implication of our result to gauge/gravity dualities for M-theory as well as a possible application to large-$N$ QCD.

ABJM Wilson Loops in Arbitrary Representations

We study vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of circular half BPS Wilson loops in arbitrary representations in ABJM theory. We find that those in hook representations are reduced to elementary integrations thanks to the Fermi gas formalism, which are accessible from the numerical studies similar to the partition function in the previous studies. For non-hook representations, we show that the VEVs in the grand canonical formalism can be exactly expressed as determinants of those in the hook representations. Using these facts, we can study the instanton effects of the VEVs in various representations. Our results are consistent with the worldsheet instanton effects studied from the topological string and a prescription to include the membrane instanton effects by shifting the chemical potential, which has been successful for the partition function.

Direct test of the AdS/CFT correspondence by Monte Carlo studies of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory

We perform nonperturbative studies of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory by Monte Carlo simulation. In particular, we calculate the correlation functions of chiral primary operators to test the AdS/CFT correspondence. Our results agree with the predictions obtained from the AdS side that the SUSY non-renormalization property is obeyed by the three-point functions but \emph{not} by the four-point functions investigated in this paper. Instead of the lattice regularization, we use a novel regularization of the theory based on an equivalence in the large-N limit between the N=4 SU(N) theory on RxS^3 and a one-dimensional SU(N) gauge theory known as the plane-wave (BMN) matrix model. The equivalence extends the idea of large-N reduction to a curved space and, at the same time, overcomes the obstacle related to the center symmetry breaking. The adopted regularization preserves 16 SUSY, which is crucial in testing the AdS/CFT correspondence with the available computer resources. The only SUSY breaking effects, which come from the momentum cutoff $Λ$ in R direction, are made negligible by using sufficiently large $Λ$.

Maximal super Yang-Mills theories on curved background with off-shell supercharges

We construct d<=7 dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories on a class of curved backgrounds with off-shell supercharges. The off-shell supersymmetry is mainly a generalization of on-shell supersymmetry constructed previously by Blau. We present several examples of backgrounds and discuss the number of the preserved supersymmetries on these backgrounds. We also construct another maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories on S^3 by dimensional reducing along the R-direction of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on RxS^3.

Localization and Large N reduction on S^3 for the Planar and M-theory limit

We show a large N reduction on S^3 in a BPS sector for a broad class of theories : N>=2 supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory with any number of adjoint and bi-fundamental chiral multiplets. We show that a localization method can be applied to the reduced model and the path integral can be written by a multi-contour integral. By taking a particular localization configuration, we also show that the large N equivalence between the original theory on S^3 and the reduced model holds for the free energy and the expectation value of BPS Wilson loops. It turns out that the large N reduction on S^3 holds also for the M-theory limit.

Monte Carlo studies of 3d N=6 SCFT via localization method

We perform Monte Carlo study of the 3d N=6 superconformal U(N)*U(N) Chern-Simons gauge theory (ABJM theory), which is conjectured to be dual to M-theory or type IIA superstring theory on certain AdS backgrounds. Our approach is based on a localization method, which reduces the problem to the simulation of a simple matrix model. This enables us to circumvent the difficulties in the original theory such as the sign problem and the SUSY breaking on a lattice. The new approach opens up the possibility of probing the quantum aspects of M-theory and testing the AdS_4/CFT_3 duality at the quantum level. Here we calculate the free energy, and confirm the N^{3/2} scaling in the M-theory limit predicted from the gravity side. We also find that our results nicely interpolate the analytical formulae proposed previously in the M-theory and type IIA regimes.

Numerical studies of the ABJM theory for arbitrary N at arbitrary coupling constant

We show that the ABJM theory, which is an N=6 superconformal U(N)*U(N) Chern-Simons gauge theory, can be studied for arbitrary N at arbitrary coupling constant by applying a simple Monte Carlo method to the matrix model that can be derived from the theory by using the localization technique. This opens up the possibility of probing the quantum aspects of M-theory and testing the AdS_4/CFT_3 duality at the quantum level. Here we calculate the free energy, and confirm the N^{3/2} scaling in the M-theory limit predicted from the gravity side. We also find that our results nicely interpolate the analytical formulae proposed previously in the M-theory and type IIA regimes. Furthermore, we show that some results obtained by the Fermi gas approach can be clearly understood from the constant map contribution obtained by the genus expansion. The method can be easily generalized to the calculations of BPS operators and to other theories that reduce to matrix models.

Testing the AdS/CFT correspondence by Monte Carlo calculation of BPS and non-BPS Wilson loops in 4d N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory

We test the AdS/CFT correspondence by calculating Wilson loops in N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory on R*S^3 in the planar limit. Our method is based on a novel large-N reduction, which reduces the problem to Monte Carlo calculations in the plane-wave matrix model or the BMN matrix model, which is a 1d gauge theory with 16 supercharges. By using the gauge-fixed momentumspace simulation, we obtain results respecting 16 supersymmetries. We report on the Monte Carlo results for the BPS circular Wilson loop, which reproduce the exact result up to strong coupling. As a future prospect, we calculate a track-shapedWilson loop from the gravity side, which shows that a clear test of the AdS/CFT for the non-BPS case is also feasible.

Supersymmetry non-renormalization theorem from a computer and the AdS/CFT correspondence

We perform Monte Carlo calculation of correlation functions in 4d N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on R*S^3 in the planar limit. In order to circumvent the well-known problem of lattice SUSY, we adopt the idea of a novel large-N reduction, which reduces the calculation to that of corresponding correlation functions in the plane-wave matrix model or the BMN matrix model. This model is a 1d gauge theory with 16 supersymmetries, which can be simulated in a manner similar to the recent studies of the D0-brane system. We study two-point and three-point functions of chiral primary operators at various coupling constant, and find that they agree with the free theory results up to overall constant factors. The ratio of the overall factors for two-point and three-point functions agrees with the prediction of the AdS/CFT correspondence.
