Page curve from dynamical branes in JT gravity

We study the Page curve of an evaporating black hole using a toy model given by Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with Fateev-Zamolodchikov-Zamolodchikov-Teschner (FZZT) antibranes. We treat the anti-FZZT branes as dynamical objects, taking their back-reaction into account. We construct the entanglement entropy from the dual matrix model and study its behavior as a function of the 't Hooft coupling $t$ proportional to the number of branes, which plays the role of time. By numerical computation we observe that the entropy first increases and then decreases as $t$ grows, reproducing the well-known behavior of the Page curve of an evaporating black hole. The system finally exhibits a phase transition, which may be viewed as the end of the evaporation. We study the critical behavior of the entropy near the phase transition. We also make a conjecture about the late-time monotonically decreasing behavior of the entropy. We prove it in a certain limit as well as give an intuitive explanation by means of the dual matrix model.

Quenched free energy from spacetime D-branes

We propose a useful integral representation of the quenched free energy which is applicable to any random systems. Our formula involves the generating function of multi-boundary correlators, which can be interpreted on the bulk gravity side as spacetime D-branes introduced by Marolf and Maxfield in [arXiv:2002.08950]. As an example, we apply our formalism to the Airy limit of the random matrix model and compute its quenched free energy under certain approximations of the generating function of correlators. It turns out that the resulting quenched free energy is a monotonically decreasing function of the temperature, as expected.

JT gravity, KdV equations and macroscopic loop operators

We study the thermal partition function of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity in asymptotically Euclidean $AdS_2$ background using the matrix model description recently found by Saad, Shenker and Stanford [arXiv:1903.11115]. We show that the partition function of JT gravity is written as the expectation value of a macroscopic loop operator in the old matrix model of 2d gravity in the background where infinitely many couplings are turned on in a specific way. Based on this expression we develop a very efficient method of computing the partition function in the genus expansion as well as in the low temperature expansion by making use of the Korteweg-de Vries constraints obeyed by the partition function. We have computed both these expansions up to very high orders using this method. It turns out that we can take a low temperature limit with the ratio of the temperature and the genus counting parameter held fixed. We find the first few orders of the expansion of the free energy in a closed form in this scaling limit. We also study numerically the behavior of the eigenvalue density and the Baker-Akhiezer function using the results in the scaling limit.

Multi-boundary correlators in JT gravity

We continue the systematic study of the thermal partition function of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity started in [arXiv:1911.01659]. We generalize our analysis to the case of multi-boundary correlators with the help of the boundary creation operator. We clarify how the Korteweg-de Vries constraints arise in the presence of multiple boundaries, deriving differential equations obeyed by the correlators. The differential equations allow us to compute the genus expansion of the correlators up to any order without ambiguity. We also formulate a systematic method of calculating the WKB expansion of the Baker-Akhiezer function and the 't Hooft expansion of the multi-boundary correlators. This new formalism is much more efficient than our previous method based on the topological recursion. We further investigate the low temperature expansion of the two-boundary correlator. We formulate a method of computing it up to any order and also find a universal form of the two-boundary correlator in terms of the error function. Using this result we are able to write down the analytic form of the spectral form factor in JT gravity and show how the ramp and plateau behavior comes about. We also study the Hartle-Hawking state in the free boson/fermion representation of the tau-function and discuss how it should be related to the multi-boundary correlators.

Replica symmetry breaking in random matrix model: a toy model of wormhole networks

We study the replica symmetry breaking (RSB) in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) random matrix model. We find that the RSB occurs at the transition temperature $T_{\text{RSB}}\sim N^{-2/3}$ in the large $N$ limit. We argue that this transition originates from a landscape of almost degenerate local minima of free energy labeled by Young diagrams. We also discuss a possible implication of our findings for the multiply-coupled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models and their holographic dual Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity from the viewpoint of ER=EPR conjecture.

$α'$-expansion of Anti-Symmetric Wilson Loops in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM from Fermi Gas

We study the large 't Hooft coupling expansion of 1/2 BPS Wilson loops in the anti-symmetric representation in $ \mathcal{N}=4 $ super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory at the leading order in the 1/N expansion. Via AdS/CFT correspondence, this expansion corresponds to the $α'$ expansion in bulk type IIB string theory. We show that this expansion can be systematically computed by using the low temperature expansion of Fermi distribution function, known as the Sommerfeld expansion in statistical mechanics. We check numerically that our expansion agrees with the exact result of anti-symmetric Wilson loops recently found by Fiol and Torrents.

ABJ Theory in the Higher Spin Limit

We study the conjecture made by Chang, Minwalla, Sharma, and Yin on the duality between the N=6 Vasiliev higher spin theory on AdS_4 and the N=6 Chern-Simons-matter theory, so-called ABJ theory, with gauge group U(N) x U(N+M). Building on our earlier results on the ABJ partition function, we develop the systematic 1/M expansion, corresponding to the weak coupling expansion in the higher spin theory, and compare the leading 1/M correction, with our proposed prescription, to the one-loop free energy of the N=6 Vasiliev theory. We find an agreement between the two sides up to an ambiguity that appears in the bulk one-loop calculation.

Exact results for ABJ Wilson loops and open-closed duality

We find new exact relations between the partition function and vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of 1/2 BPS Wilson loops in ABJ theory, which allow us to predict the large N expansions of the 1/2 BPS Wilson loops from known results of the partition function. These relations are interpreted as an open-closed duality where the closed string background is shifted by the insertion of Wilson loops due to a back-reaction. Using the connection between ABJ theory and the topological string on local P1 x P1, we explicitly write down non-trivial relations between open and closed string amplitudes.

Instanton Corrections of 1/6 BPS Wilson Loops in ABJM Theory

We study instanton corrections to the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of 1/6 BPS Wilson loops in ABJM theory from the Fermi gas approach. We mainly consider Wilson loops in the fundamental representation and winding Wilson loops, but we also initiate the study of Wilson loops with two boundaries. We find that the membrane instanton corrections to the Wilson loop VEV are determined by the refined topological string in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit, and the pole cancellation mechanism between membrane instantons and worldsheet instantons works also in the Wilson loop VEVs as in the case of the partition functions.

Numerical Analysis of Coleman-de Luccia Tunneling

We study the false vacuum decay of a single scalar field $ϕ$ coupled to gravity described by the Coleman-de Luccia (CdL) instanton. We show that it is possible to numerically calculate the bounce factor, which is related to the CdL tunneling rate, without using the thin-wall approximation. In this paper, we consider $1/\cosh(ϕ)$- and $\cos(ϕ)$-type potential as examples, which have cosmological and phenomenological applications. Especially, in the $\cos(ϕ)$-type potential we show that the range of values in which axion decay constant can take is restricted by the form of the periodic potential if the CdL tunneling occurs.

Orientifolding of the ABJ Fermi gas

The grand partition functions of ABJ theory can be factorized into even and odd parts under the reflection of fermion coordinate in the Fermi gas approach. In some cases, the even/odd part of ABJ grand partition function is equal to that of $\mathcal{N}=5$ $O(n)\times USp(n')$ theory, hence it is natural to think of the even/odd projection of grand partition function as an orientifolding of ABJ Fermi gas system. By a systematic WKB analysis, we determine the coefficients in the perturbative part of grand potential of such orientifold ABJ theory. We also find the exact form of the first few "half-instanton" corrections coming from the twisted sector of the reflection of fermion coordinate. For the Chern-Simons level $k=2,4,8$ we find closed form expressions of the grand partition functions of orientifold ABJ theory, and for $k=2,4$ we prove the functional relations among the grand partition functions conjectured in arXiv:1410.7658.

Resummations and Non-Perturbative Corrections

We consider a generalization of the Borel resummation, which turns out to be equivalent to the standard Borel resummation. We apply it to the simplest large N duality between the pure Chern-Simons theory and the topological string on the resolved conifold, and find a simple integral formula for the free energy. Expanding this integral representation around the large radius point at finite string coupling gs, we find that it includes not only the M-theoretic resummation a la Gopakumar and Vafa, but also a non-perturbative correction in gs. Remarkably, the obtained non-perturbative correction is in perfect agreement with a proposal for membrane instanton corrections in arXiv:1306.1734. Various other examples are also presented.

TBA-like integral equations from quantized mirror curves

Quantizing the mirror curve of certain toric Calabi-Yau (CY) three-folds leads to a family of trace class operators. The resolvent function of these operators is known to encode topological data of the CY. In this paper, we show that in certain cases, this resolvent function satisfies a system of non-linear integral equations whose structure is very similar to the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) systems. This can be used to compute spectral traces, both exactly and as a semiclassical expansion. As a main example, we consider the system related to the quantized mirror curve of local $\mathbb P^2$. According to a recent proposal, the traces of this operator are determined by the refined BPS indices of the underlying CY. We use our non-linear integral equations to test that proposal.

Wilson loops in 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SQCD from Fermi gas

We study 1/2 BPS Wilson loops in 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ $U(N)$ Yang-Mills theory with one adjoint and $N_f$ fundamental hypermultiplets from the Fermi gas approach. By numerical fitting, we find the first few worldsheet instanton corrections to the Wilson loops with winding numbers 1, 2 and 3. We verify that our Fermi gas results are consistent with the matrix model results in the planar limit.

Large N non-perturbative effects in $\mathcal{N}=4$ superconformal Chern-Simons theories

We investigate the large $N$ instanton effects of partition functions in a class of $\mathcal{N}=4$ circular quiver Chern-Simons theories on a three-sphere. Our analysis is based on the supersymmetry localization and the Fermi-gas formalism. The resulting matrix model can be regarded as a two-parameter deformation of the ABJM matrix model, and has richer non-perturbative structures. Based on a systematic semi-classical analysis, we find analytic expressions of membrane instanton corrections. We also exactly compute the partition function for various cases and find some exact forms of worldsheet instanton corrections, which appear as quantum mechanical non-perturbative corrections in the Fermi-gas system.

Probing non-perturbative effects in M-theory on orientifolds

Using holography, we study non-perturbative effects in M-theory on orientifolds from the analysis of the S^3 partition functions of dual field theories. We consider the S^3 partition functions of N=4 Yang-Mills theory with O(n) gauge symmetry coupled to one (anti)symmetric and N_f fundamental hypermultiplets from the Fermi gas approach. In addition to the worldsheet instanton and membrane instanton corrections to the grand potential, which are also present in the U(n) Yang-Mills case, we find that there exist "half instanton" corrections coming from the effect of orientifold plane.

Exact results on ABJ theory and the refined topological string

We study the partition function of the ABJ theory, which is the N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons matter theory with gauge group U(N)xU(N+M) and Chern-Simons levels (k,-k). We exactly compute the ABJ partition function on a three sphere for various k, M and N via the Fermi gas approach. By using these exact data, we show that the ABJ partition function is completely determined by the refined topological string on local P^1 x P^1, including membrane instanton effects in the M-theory dual.

Probing non-perturbative effects in M-theory

The AdS/CFT correspondence enables us to probe M-theory on various backgrounds from the corresponding dual gauge theories. Here we investigate in detail a three-dimensional U(N) N=4 super Yang-Mills theory coupled to one adjoint hypermultiplet and Nf fundamental hypermultiplets, which is large N dual to M-theory on AdS_4xS^7/Z_Nf. Using the localization and the Fermi-gas formulation, we explore non-perturbative corrections to the partition function. As in the ABJM theory, we find that there exists a non-trivial pole cancellation mechanism, which guarantees the theory to be well-defined, between worldsheet instantons and membrane instantons for all rational (in particular, physical or integral) values of Nf.

ABJM Wilson Loops in Arbitrary Representations

We study vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of circular half BPS Wilson loops in arbitrary representations in ABJM theory. We find that those in hook representations are reduced to elementary integrations thanks to the Fermi gas formalism, which are accessible from the numerical studies similar to the partition function in the previous studies. For non-hook representations, we show that the VEVs in the grand canonical formalism can be exactly expressed as determinants of those in the hook representations. Using these facts, we can study the instanton effects of the VEVs in various representations. Our results are consistent with the worldsheet instanton effects studied from the topological string and a prescription to include the membrane instanton effects by shifting the chemical potential, which has been successful for the partition function.

Instanton Bound States in ABJM Theory

The partition function of the ABJM theory receives non-perturbative corrections due to instanton effects. We study these non-perturbative corrections, including bound states of worldsheet instantons and membrane instantons, in the Fermi-gas approach. We require that the total non-perturbative correction should be always finite for arbitrary Chern-Simons level. This finiteness is realized quite non-trivially because each bound state contribution naively diverges at some levels. The poles of each contribution should be canceled out in total. We use this pole cancellation mechanism to find unknown bound state corrections from known ones. We conjecture a general expression of the bound state contribution. Summing up all the bound state contributions, we find that the effect of bound states is simply incorporated into the worldsheet instanton correction by a redefinition of the chemical potential in the Fermi-gas system. Analytic expressions of the 3- and 4-membrane instanton corrections are also proposed.

Non-perturbative effects and the refined topological string

The partition function of ABJM theory on the three-sphere has non-perturbative corrections due to membrane instantons in the M-theory dual. We show that the full series of membrane instanton corrections is completely determined by the refined topological string on the Calabi-Yau manifold known as local P1xP1, in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit. Our result can be interpreted as a first-principles derivation of the full series of non-perturbative effects for the closed topological string on this Calabi-Yau background. Based on this, we make a proposal for the non-perturbative free energy of topological strings on general, local Calabi-Yau manifolds.

A Note on the Partition Function of ABJM theory on S^3

We study the partition function Z of U(N)_k x U(N)_{-k} Chern-Simons matter theory (ABJM theory) on S^3 which is recently obtained by the localization method. We evaluate the eigenvalue integral in Z exactly for the N=2 case. We find that Z has a different dependence on k for even k and odd k. We comment on the possible implication of this result in the context of AdS/CFT correspondence.

Exact Results on the ABJM Fermi Gas

We study the Fermi gas quantum mechanics associated to the ABJM matrix model. We develop the method to compute the grand partition function of the ABJM theory, and compute exactly the partition function Z(N) up to N=9 when the Chern-Simons level k=1. We find that the eigenvalue problem of this quantum mechanical system is reduced to the diagonalization of a certain Hankel matrix. In reducing the number of integrations by commuting coordinates and momenta, we find an exact relation concerning the grand partition function, which is interesting on its own right and very helpful for determining the partition function. We also study the TBA-type integral equations that allow us to compute the grand partition function numerically. Surprisingly, all of our exact results of the partition functions are written in terms of polynomials of 1/pi with rational coefficients.

Instanton Effects in ABJM Theory from Fermi Gas Approach

We study the instanton effects of the ABJM partition function using the Fermi gas formalism. We compute the exact values of the partition function at the Chern-Simons levels k=1,2,3,4,6 up to N=44,20,18,16,14 respectively, and extract non-perturbative corrections from these exact results. Fitting the resulting non-perturbative corrections by their expected forms from the Fermi gas, we determine unknown parameters in them. After separating the oscillating behavior of the grand potential, which originates in the periodicity of the grand partition function, and the worldsheet instanton contribution, which is computed from the topological string theory, we succeed in proposing an analytical expression for the leading D2-instanton correction. Just as the perturbative result, the instanton corrections to the partition function are expressed in terms of the Airy function.

D-branes Wrapped on Fuzzy del Pezzo Surfaces

We construct classical solutions in quiver gauge theories on D0-branes probing toric del Pezzo singularities in Calabi-Yau manifolds. Our solutions represent D4-branes wrapped around fuzzy del Pezzo surfaces. We study the fluctuation spectrum around the fuzzy CP^2 solution in detail. We also comment on possible applications of our fuzzy del Pezzo surfaces to the fuzzy version of F-theory, dubbed F(uzz) theory.

Gauge-Higgs Unification In Spontaneously Created Fuzzy Extra Dimensions

We propose gauge-Higgs unification in fuzzy extra dimensions as a possible solution to the Higgs naturalness problem. In our approach, the fuzzy extra dimensions are created spontaneously as a vacuum solution of certain four-dimensional gauge theory. As an example, we construct a model which has a fuzzy torus as its vacuum. The Higgs field in our model is associated with the Wilson loop wrapped on the fuzzy torus. We show that the quadratic divergence in the mass of the Higgs field in the one-loop effective potential is absent. We then argue based on symmetries that the quantum corrections to the Higgs mass is suppressed including all loop contributions. We also consider a realization on the worldvolume theory of D3-branes probing $C^3/(Z_N \times Z_N)$ orbifold with discrete torsion.

Global AdS Picture of 1/2 BPS Wilson Loops

We study the holographic dual string configuration of 1/2 BPS circular Wilson loops in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory by using the global coordinate of AdS. The dual string worldsheet is given by the Poincare disk AdS_2 sitting at a constant global time slice of AdS_5. We also analyze the correlator of two concentric circular Wilson loops from the global AdS perspective and study the phase transition associated with the instability of annulus worldsheet connecting the two Wilson loops.

Annulus Amplitudes and ZZ Branes in Minimal String Theory

We study the annulus amplitudes of (p,q) minimal string theory. Focusing on the ZZ-FZZT annulus amplitude as a target-space probe of the ZZ brane, we use it to confirm that the ZZ branes are localized in the strong-coupling region. Along the way we learn that the ZZ-FZZT open strings are fermions, even though our theory is bosonic! We also provide a geometrical interpretation of the annulus amplitudes in terms of the Riemann surface M_{p,q} that emerges from the FZZT branes. The ZZ-FZZT annulus amplitude measures the deformation of M_{p,q} due to the presence of background ZZ branes; each kind of ZZ-brane deforms only one A-period of the surface. Finally, we use the annulus amplitudes to argue that the ZZ branes can be regarded as "wrong-branch" tachyons which violate the bound α<Q/2.

Three-Point Functions in N=4 SYM Theory at One-Loop

We analyze the one-loop correction to the three-point function coefficient of scalar primary operators in N=4 SYM theory. By applying constraints from the superconformal symmetry, we demonstrate that the type of Feynman diagrams that contribute depends on the choice of renormalization scheme. In the planar limit, explicit expressions for the correction are interpreted in terms of the hamiltonians of the associated integrable closed and open spin chains. This suggests that at least at one-loop, the planar conformal field theory is integrable with the anomalous dimensions and OPE coefficients both obtainable from integrable spin chain calculations. We also connect the planar results with similar structures found in closed string field theory.

Path Integral Approach to String Theory on AdS_3

Using the path integral approach, we discuss the correlation functions of the $SL(2,\bfC)/SU(2)$ WZW model, which corresponds to the string theory on the Euclidean $AdS_3$. We obtain the two- and three-point functions for generic primary fields in closed forms. By an appropriate change of the normalization of the primary fields, our results coincide with those by Teschner, which were obtained by using the bootstrap approach. The supergravity results are also obtained in the semi-classical limit.

BRST gauge fixing and the algebra of global supersymmetry

A global supersymmetry (SUSY) in supersymmetric gauge theory is generally broken by gauge fixing. A prescription to extract physical information from such SUSY algebra broken by gauge fixing is analyzed in path integral framework. If $δ_{SUSY}δ_{BRST}Ψ= δ_{BRST}δ_{SUSY}Ψ$ for a gauge fixing ``fermion'' $Ψ$, the SUSY charge density is written as a sum of the piece which is naively expected without gauge fixing and a BRST exact piece. If $δ_{SUSY}δ_{SUSY}δ_{BRST}Ψ= δ_{BRST}δ_{SUSY}δ_{SUSY}Ψ$, the equal-time anti-commutator of SUSY charge is written as a sum of a physical piece and a BRST exact piece. We illustrate these properties for N=1 and N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories and for a D=10 massive superparticle (or ``D-particle'') where the $κ$-symmetry provides extra complications.

Fractional Strings in (p,q) 5-brane and Quiver Matrix String Theory

We study the (p,q)5-brane dynamics from the viewpoint of Matrix string theory in the T-dualized ALE background. The most remarkable feature in the (p,q)5-brane is the existence of ``fractional string'', which appears as the instanton of 5-brane gauge theory. We approach to the physical aspects of fractional string by means of the two types of Matrix string probes: One of which is that given in hep-th/9710065. As the second probe we present the Matrix string theory describing the fractional string itself. We calculate the moduli space metrics in the respective cases and argue on the specific behaviors of fractional string. Especially, we show that the ``joining'' process of fractional strings can be realized as the transition from the Coulomb branch to the Higgs branch of the fractional string probe. In this argument, we emphasize the importance of some monodromies related with the theta-angle of the 5-brane gauge theory.
