Yamabe Invariants and the Pin−(2)\mathrm{Pin}^-(2)-monopole Equations

We compute the Yamabe invariants for a new infinite class of closed 44-dimensional manifolds by using a "twisted" version of the Seiberg-Witten equations, the Pin−(2)\mathrm{Pin}^-(2)-monopole equations. The same technique also provides a new obstruction to the existence of Einstein metrics or long-time solutions of the normalised Ricci flow with uniformly bounded scalar curvature.

Harnack Estimates for Nonlinear Backward Heat Equations in Geometric Flows

Let MM be a closed Riemannian manifold with a family of Riemannian metrics gij(t)g_{ij}(t) evolving by a geometric flow ∂tgij=−2Sij\partial_{t}g_{ij} = -2{S}_{ij}, where Sij(t)S_{ij}(t) is a family of smooth symmetric two-tensors. We derive several differential Harnack estimates for positive solutions to the nonlinear backward heat-type equation \begin{eqnarray*} \frac{\partial f}{\partial t} = -Δf + γf\log f +aSf \end{eqnarray*} where aa and γγ are constants and S=gijSijS=g^{ij}S_{ij} is the trace of SijS_{ij}. Our abstract formulation provides a unified framework for some known results proved by various authors, and moreover lead to new Harnack inequalities for a variety of geometric flows.

Harnack Estimates for Nonlinear Heat Equations with Potentials in Geometric Flows

Let MM be a closed Riemannian manifold with a family of Riemannian metrics gij(t)g_{ij}(t) evolving by geometric flow ∂tgij=−2Sij\partial_{t}g_{ij} = -2{S}_{ij}, where Sij(t)S_{ij}(t) is a family of smooth symmetric two-tensors on MM. In this paper we derive differential Harnack estimates for positive solutions to the nonlinear heat equation with potential: \begin{eqnarray*} \frac{\partial f}{\partial t} = Δf + γ(t) f\log f +aSf, \end{eqnarray*} where γ(t)γ(t) is a continuous function on tt, aa is a constant and S=gijSijS=g^{ij}S_{ij} is the trace of SijS_{ij}. Our Harnack estimates include many known results as special cases, and moreover lead to new Harnack inequalities for a variety geometric flows.

Families of 4-manifolds with nontrivial stable cohomotopy Seiberg-Witten invariants, and normalized Ricci flow

In this article, we produce infinite families of 4-manifolds with positive first betti numbers and meeting certain conditions on their homotopy and smooth types so as to conclude the non-vanishing of the stable cohomotopy Seiberg-Witten invariants of their connected sums. Elementary building blocks used in the earlier work of Ishida and Sasahira are shown to be included in our general construction scheme as well. We then use these families to construct the first examples of families of closed smooth 4-manifolds for which Gromov's simplicial volume is nontrivial, Perelman's lambda-bar invariant is negative, and the relevant Gromov-Hitchin-Thorpe type inequality is satisfied, yet no non-singular solution to the normalized Ricci flow for any initial metric can be obtained. Fang, Zhang and Zhang conjectured that the existence of any non-singular solution to the normalized Ricci flow on smooth 4-manifolds with non-trivial Gromov's simplicial volume and negative Perelman's lambda-bar invariant implies the Gromov-Hitchin-Thorpe type inequality. Our results in particular imply that the converse of this fails to be true for vast families of 4-manifolds.

An essential relation between Einstein metrics, volume entropy, and exotic smooth structures

We show that the minimal volume entropy of closed manifolds remains unaffected when nonessential manifolds are added in a connected sum. We combine this result with the stable cohomotopy invariant of Bauer-Furuta in order to present an infinite family of four-manifolds with the following properties: 1) They have positive minimal volume entropy. 2) They satisfy a strict version of the Gromov-Hitchin-Thorpe inequality, with a minimal volume entropy term. 3) They nevertheless admit infinitely many distinct smooth structures for which no compatible Einstein metric exists.
