Electronic phase diagram of Fe1+y_{1+y}Te1−x_{1-x}Sex_{x} revealed by magnetotransport measurements

Among the Fe-based superconductors, Fe1+y_{1+y}Te1−x_{1-x}Sex_{x} is unique in that its crystal structure is the simplest and the electron correlation level is the strongest, and thus it is important to investigate the doping(xx)-temperature (TT) phase diagram of this system. However, inevitably incorporated excess Fe currently prevents the establishment of the true phase diagram. We overcome the aforementioned significant problem via developing a new annealing method termed as "Te-annealing" wherein single crystals are annealed under Te vapor. Specifically, we conducted various magnetotransport measurements on Te-annealed superconducting Fe1+y_{1+y}Te1−x_{1-x}Sex_{x}. We observed that crossover from the incoherent to the coherent electronic state and opening of the pseudogap occurs at high temperatures (≈\approx 150 K for xx = 0.2). This is accompanied by a more substantial pseudogap and the emergence of a phase with a multi-band nature at lower temperatures (below ≈\approx 50 K for xx = 0.2) before superconductivity sets in. Based on the results, the third type electronic phase diagram in Fe-based high-TcT_c superconductors is revealed.

Effects of Annealing under Tellurium Vapor for Fe1.03_{1.03}Te0.8_{0.8}Se0.2_{0.2} Single Crystals

In this study, the effects of annealing under tellurium vapor have been investigated for Fe1.03_{1.03}Te0.8_{0.8}Se0.2_{0.2} single crystals. The as-grown crystal is not superconducting. After annealing it at 400 ∘^\circC for 250 h in tellurium (Te) vapor, it shows metallic resistivity temperature dependence below 150 K and a sharp superconducting transition at 13 K. The sample also shows a full magnetic shielding effect at low temperatures. The improvement in superconductivity has been attributed to the removal of excess Fe, which is inevitably incorporated in the as-grown crystals, by the annealing.

Structural quantum criticality and superconductivity in iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2

We investigated the elastic properties of the iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 with eight Co concentrations. The elastic constant C66 shows large elastic softening associated with the structural phase transition. The C66 was analyzed base on localized and itinerant pictures of Fe-3d electrons, which shows the strong electron-lattice coupling and a possible mass enhancement in this system. The results resemble those of unconventional superconductors, where the properties of the system are governed by the quantum fluctuations associated with the zero-temperature critical point of the long-range order; namely, the quantum critical point (QCP). In this system, the inverse of C66 behaves just like the magnetic susceptibility in the magnetic QCP systems. While the QCPs of these existing superconductors are all ascribed to antiferromagnetism, our systematic studies on the canonical iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 have revealed that there is a signature of "structural quantum criticality" in this material, which is so far without precedent. The elastic constant anomaly is suggested to concern with the emergence of superconductivity. These results highlight the strong electron-lattice coupling and effect of the band in this system, thus challenging the prevailing scenarios that focus on the role of the iron 3d-orbitals.

Anomalous elastic softening of SmRu_{4}P_{12} under high pressure

The filled skutterudite compound SmRu_4P_{12} undergoes a complex evolution from a paramagnetic metal (phase I) to a probable multipolar ordering insulator (phase II) at T_{MI} = 16.5 K, then to a magnetically ordered phase (phase III) at T_{N} = 14 K. Elastic properties under hydrostatic pressures were investigated to study the nature of the ordering phases. We found that distinct elastic softening above T_{MI} is induced by pressure, giving evidence of quadrupole degeneracy of the ground state in the crystalline electric field. It also suggests that quadrupole moment may be one of the order parameters below T_{MI} under pressure. Strangely, the largest degree of softening is found in the transverse elastic constant C_{T} at around 0.5-0.6 GPa, presumably having relevancy to the competing and very different Gruneisen parameters Ωof T_{MI} and T_{N}. Interplay between the two phase transitions is also verified by the rapid increase of T_{MI} under pressure with a considerably large Ωof 9. Our results can be understood on the basis of the proposed octupole scenario for SmRu_4P_{12}.

Elastic properties of the Non-Fermi liquid metal CeRu4Sb12Ce Ru_4 Sb_{12} and the Dense Kondo semiconductor CeOs4Sb12Ce Os_4 Sb_{12}

We have investigated the elastic properties of the Ce-based filled skutterudite antimonides CeRu4_{4}Sb12_{12} and CeOs4_{4}Sb12_{12} by means of ultrasonic measurements. CeRu4_{4}Sb12_{12} shows a slight increase around 130 K in the temperature dependence of the elastic constants CC11_{11}, (CC11_{11}-CC12_{12})/2 and CC44_{44}. No apparent softening toward low temperature due to a quadrupolar response of the 4ff-electronic ground state of the Ce ion was observed at low temperatures. In contrast CeOs4_{4}Sb12_{12} shows a pronounced elastic softening toward low temperature in the longitudinal CC11_{11} as a function of temperature (TT) below about 15 K, while a slight elastic softening was observed in the transverse CC44_{44} below about 1.5 K. Furthermore, CeOs4_{4}Sb12_{12} shows a steep decrease around a phase transition temperature of 0.9 K in both CC11_{11} andC C44_{44}. The elastic softening observed in CC11_{11} below about 15 K cannot be explained reasonably only by the crystalline electric field effect. It is most likely to be responsible for the coupling between the elastic strain and the quasiparticle band with a small energy gap in the vicinity of Fermi level. The elastic properties and the 4ff ground state of Ce ions in CeRu4_{4}Sb12_{12} and CeOs4_{4}Sb12_{12} are discussed from the viewpoint of the crystalline electric field effect and the band structure in the vicinity of Fermi level.
