Exact large-scale fluctuations of the phase field in the sine-Gordon model

We present the first exact theory and analytical formulas for the large-scale phase fluctuations in the sine-Gordon model, valid in all regimes of the field theory, for arbitrary temperatures and interaction strengths. Our result is based on the Ballistic Fluctuation Theory combined with Generalized Hydrodynamics, and can be seen as an exact ``dressing" of the phenomenological soliton-gas picture first introduced by Sachdev and Young [S. Sachdev and A. P. Young, PRL 78, 2220 (1997)], to the modes of Generalised Hydrodynamics. The resulting physics of phase fluctuations in the sine-Gordon model is qualitatively different, as the stable quasi-particles of integrability give coherent ballistic propagation instead of diffusive spreading. We provide extensive numerical checks of our analytical predictions within the classical regime of the field theory by using Monte Carlo methods. We discuss how our results are of ready applicability to experiments on tunnel-coupled quasicondensates.

Superdiffusive quantum work and adiabatic quantum evolution in finite temperature chaotic Fermi systems

We study the full distribution of quantum work in generic, noninteracting, disordered fermionic nanosystems at finite temperature. We derive an analytical determinant formula for the characteristic function of work statistics for quantum quenches starting from a thermal initial state. For work small compared to the thermal energy of the Fermi gas, work distribution is Gaussian, and the variance of work is proportional to the average work, while in the low temperature or large work limit, a non-Gaussian distribution with superdiffusive work fluctuations is observed. Similarly, the time dependence of the probability of adiabaticity crosses over from an exponential to a stretched exponential behavior. For large enough average work, the work distribution becomes universal, and depends only on the temperature and the mean work. Apart from initial low temperature transients, work statistics are well captured by a Markovian energy-space diffusion process of hard-core particles, starting from a thermal initial state. Our findings can be verified by measurements on nanoscale circuits or via single qubit interferometry.

Theory of Quantum Work in Metallic Grains

We generalize Anderson's orthogonality determinant formula to describe the statistics of work performed on generic disordered, non-interacting fermionic nanograins during quantum quenches. The energy absorbed increases linearly with time, while its variance exhibits a superdiffusive behavior due to Pauli's exclusion principle. The probability of adiabatic evolution decays as a stretched exponential. In slowly driven systems, work statistics exhibits universal features, and can be understood in terms of fermion diffusion in energy space, generated by Landau-Zener transitions. This diffusion is very well captured by a Markovian symmetrical exclusion process, with the diffusion constant identified as the energy absorption rate. The energy absorption rate shows an anomalous frequency dependence at small energies, reflecting the symmetry class of the underlying Hamiltonian. Our predictions can be experimentally verified by calorimetric measurements performed on nanoscale circuits.

Quenches and confinement in a Heisenberg-Ising spin ladder

We consider the quantum quench dynamics of a Heisenberg-Ising spin ladder which is an archetypal model in which confinement of elementary excitations is triggered by internal interactions rather than an external field. We show that the confinement strongly affects the light cone structure of correlation functions providing signatures of the velocities of the mesons of the model. We also show that the meson masses can be measured from the real time analysis of the evolution of the order parameter.

Simulating Lindbladian evolution with non-abelian symmetries: Ballistic front propagation in the $SU(2)$ Hubbard model with a localized loss

We develop a non-Abelian time evolving block decimation (NA-TEBD) approach to study of open systems governed by Lindbladian time evolution, while exploiting an arbitrary number of abelian or non-abelian symmetries. We illustrate this method in a one-dimensional fermionic $SU(2)$ Hubbard model on a semi-infinite lattice with localized particle loss at one end. We observe a ballistic front propagation with strongly renormalized front velocity, and a hydrodynamic current density profile. For large loss rates, a suppression of the particle current is observed, as a result of the quantum Zeno effect. Operator entanglement is found to propagate faster than the depletion profile, preceding the latter.

Quantum quenches in the sine--Gordon model: a semiclassical approach

We compute the time evolution of correlation functions after quantum quenches in the sine--Gordon model within the semiclassical approximation which is expected to yield accurate results for small quenches. We demonstrate this by reproducing results of a recent form factor calculation of the relaxation of expectation values. Extending these results, we find that the expectation values of most vertex operators do not decay to zero. We give analytic expressions for the relaxation of dynamic correlation functions, and we show that they have diffusive behavior for large timelike separation.

Analytic results for a quantum quench from free to hard-core one dimensional bosons

It is widely believed that the stationary properties after a quantum quench in integrable systems can be described by a generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE), even if all the analytical evidence is based on free theories in which the pre- and post-quench modes are linearly related. In contrast, we consider the experimentally relevant quench of the one-dimensional Bose gas from zero to infinite interaction, in which the relation between modes is nonlinear, and consequently Wick's theorem does not hold. We provide exact analytical results for the time evolution of the dynamical density-density correlation function at any time after the quench and we prove that its stationary value is described by a GGE in which Wick's theorem is restored.

Finite temperature spin dynamics in a perturbed quantum critical Ising chain with an $E_8$ symmetry

A spectrum exhibiting $E_8$ symmetry is expected to arise when a small longitudinal field is introduced in the transverse-field Ising chain at its quantum critical point. Evidence for this spectrum has recently come from neutron scattering measurements in cobalt niobate, a quasi one-dimensional Ising ferromagnet. Unlike its zero-temperature counterpart, the finite-temperature dynamics of the model has not yet been determined. We study the dynamical spin structure factor of the model at low frequencies and nonzero temperatures, using the form factor method. Its frequency dependence is singular, but differs from the diffusion form. The temperature dependence of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation rate has an activated form, whose prefactor we also determine. We propose NMR experiments as a means to further test the applicability of the $E_8$ description for CoNb$_2$O$_6$.

Interaction quench in a trapped one-dimensional Bose gas

We study the non-equilibrium quench dynamics from free to hard-core one-dimensional bosons in the presence of a hard-wall confining potential. We characterise the density profile and the two-point fermionic correlation function in the stationary state as well as their full time evolution. We find that for long times the system relaxes to a uniform density profile, but the correlation function keeps memory of the initial state with a stationary algebraic long-distance decay as opposite to the exponential behaviour found for the same quench in the periodic setup. We also compute the stationary bosonic two-point correlator which turns out to decay exponentially for large distances. We show that a two-step mechanism governs the time evolution: a quick approach to an almost stationary value is followed by a slow algebraic relaxation to the true stationary state.

Quantum quenches from excited states in the Ising chain

We consider the non-equilibrium dynamics after a sudden quench of the magnetic field in the transverse field Ising chain starting from excited states of the pre-quench Hamiltonian. We prove that stationary values of local correlation functions can be described by the generalised Gibbs ensemble (GGE). Then we study the full time evolution of the transverse magnetisation by means of stationary phase methods. The equal time two-point longitudinal correlation function is analytically derived for a particular class of excited states for quenches within the ferromagnetic phase, and studied numerically in general. The full time dependence of the entanglement entropy of a block of spins is also obtained analytically for the same class of states and for arbitrary quenches.

Stationary entanglement entropies following an interaction quench in 1D Bose gas

We analyze the entanglement properties of the asymptotic steady state after a quench from free to hard-core bosons in one dimension. The Rényi and von Neumann entanglement entropies are found to be extensive, and the latter coincides with the thermodynamic entropy of the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE). Computing the spectrum of the two-point function, we provide exact analytical results both for the leading extensive parts and the subleading terms for the entropies as well as for the cumulants of the particle number fluctuations. We also compare the extensive part of the entanglement entropy with the thermodynamic ones, showing that the GGE entropy equal the entanglement one and it is the double of the diagonal entropy.

Stationary entropies after a quench from excited states in the Ising chain

We consider the asymptotic state after a sudden quench of the magnetic field in the transverse field quantum Ising chain starting from excited states of the pre-quench Hamiltonian. We compute the thermodynamic entropies of the generalised Gibbs and the diagonal ensembles and we find that the generalised Gibbs entropy is always twice the diagonal one. We show that particular care should be taken in extracting the thermodynamic limit since different averages of equivalent microstates give different results for the entropies.

Defect flows in minimal models

In this paper we study a simple example of a two-parameter space of renormalisation group flows of defects in Virasoro minimal models. We use a combination of exact results, perturbation theory and the truncated conformal space approach to search for fixed points and investigate their nature. For the Ising model, we confirm the recent results of Fendley et al. In the case of central charge close to one, we find six fixed points, five of which we can identify in terms of known defects and one of which we conjecture is a new non-trivial conformal defect. We also include several new results on exact properties of perturbed defects and on the renormalisation group in the truncated conformal space approach.
