A PDE construction of the Euclidean $Φ^4_3$ quantum field theory

We present a new construction of the Euclidean $Φ^4$ quantum field theory on $\mathbb{R}^3$ based on PDE arguments. More precisely, we consider an approximation of the stochastic quantization equation on $\mathbb{R}^3$ defined on a periodic lattice of mesh size $\varepsilon$ and side length $M$. We introduce a new renormalized energy method in weighted spaces and prove tightness of the corresponding Gibbs measures as $\varepsilon \rightarrow 0$, $M \rightarrow \infty$. Every limit point is non-Gaussian and satisfies reflection positivity, translation invariance and stretched exponential integrability. These properties allow to verify the Osterwalder--Schrader axioms for a Euclidean QFT apart from rotation invariance and clustering. Our argument applies to arbitrary positive coupling constant, to multicomponent models with $O(N)$ symmetry and to some long-range variants. Moreover, we establish an integration by parts formula leading to the hierarchy of Dyson--Schwinger equations for the Euclidean correlation functions. To this end, we identify the renormalized cubic term as a \emph{distribution} on the space of Euclidean fields.

Randomness in compressible fluid flows past an obstacle

We consider a statistical limit of solutions to the compressible Navier--Stokes system in the high Reynolds number regime in a domain exterior to a rigid body. We investigate to what extent this highly turbulent regime can be modeled by an external stochastic perturbation, as suggested in the related physics literature. To this end, we interpret the statistical limit as a stochastic process on the associated trajectory space. We suppose that the limit process is statistically equivalent to a solution of the stochastic compressible Euler system. Then, necessarily, (i) the stochastic forcing is not active -- the limit is a statistical solution of the deterministic Euler system; (ii) the solutions S-converge to the limit; (iii) if, in addition, the expected value of the limit process solves the Euler system, then the limit is deterministic and the convergence is strong in the $L^p$-sense. These results strongly indicate that a stochastic forcing may not be a suitable model for turbulent randomness in compressible fluid flows.

Dissipative solutions and semiflow selection for the complete Euler system

To circumvent the ill-posedness issues present in various models of continuum fluid mechanics, we present a dynamical systems approach aiming at selection of physically relevant solutions. Even under the presence of infinitely many solutions to the full Euler system describing the motion of a compressible inviscid fluid, our approach permits to select a system of solutions (one trajectory for every initial condition) satisfying the classical semiflow property. Moreover, the selection respects the well accepted admissibility criteria for physical solutions, namely, maximization of the entropy production rate and the weak--strong uniqueness principle. Consequently, strong solutions are always selected whenever they exist and stationary states are stable and included in the selection as well. To this end, we introduce a notion of dissipative solution, which is given by a triple of density, momentum and total entropy defined as expectations of a suitable measure--valued solution.

On solvability and ill-posedness of the compressible Euler system subject to stochastic forces

We consider the (barotropic) Euler system describing the motion of a compressible inviscid fluid driven by a stochastic forcing. Adapting the method of convex integration we show that the initial value problem is ill-posed in the class of weak (distributional) solutions. Specifically, we find a sequence $τ_M \to \infty$ of positive stopping times for which the Euler system admits infinitely many solutions originating from the same initial data. The solutions are weak in the PDE sense but strong in the probabilistic sense, meaning, they are defined on an {\it a priori} given stochastic basis and adapted to the driving stochastic process.

Incompressible limit for compressible fluids with stochastic forcing

We study the asymptotic behavior of the isentropic Navier-Stokes system driven by a multiplicative stochastic forcing in the compressible regime, where the Mach number approaches zero. Our approach is based on the recently developed concept of weak martingale solution to the primitive system, uniform bounds derived from a stochastic analogue of the modulated energy inequality, and careful analysis of acoustic waves. A stochastic incompressible Navier-Stokes system is identified as the limit problem.

Local strong solutions to the stochastic compressible Navier-Stokes system

We study the Navier-Stokes system describing the motion of a compressible viscous fluid driven by a nonlinear multiplicative stochastic force. We establish local in time existence (up to a positive stopping time) of a unique solution, which is strong in both PDE and probabilistic sense. Our approach relies on rewriting the problem as a symmetric hyperbolic system augmented by partial diffusion, which is solved via a suitable approximation procedure using the stochastic compactness method and the Yamada-Watanabe type argument based on the Gyöngy-Krylov characterization of convergence in probability. This leads to the existence of a strong (in the PDE sense) pathwise solution. Finally, we use various stopping time arguments to establish the local existence of a unique strong solution to the original problem.

Quasilinear generalized parabolic Anderson model equation

We present in this note a local in time well-posedness result for the singular $2$-dimensional quasilinear generalized parabolic Anderson model equation $$ \partial_t u - a(u)Δu = g(u)ξ$$ The key idea of our approach is a simple transformation of the equation which allows to treat the problem as a semilinear problem. The analysis is done within the elementary setting of paracontrolled calculus.

Scalar conservation laws with rough flux and stochastic forcing

In this paper, we study scalar conservation laws where the flux is driven by a geometric Hölder $p$-rough path for some $p\in (2,3)$ and the forcing is given by an Itô stochastic integral driven by a Brownian motion. In particular, we derive the corresponding kinetic formulation and define an appropriate notion of kinetic solution. In this context, we are able to establish well-posedness, i.e. existence, uniqueness and the $L^1$-contraction property that leads to continuous dependence on initial condition. Our approach combines tools from rough path analysis, stochastic analysis and theory of kinetic solutions for conservation laws. As an application, this allows to cover the case of flux driven for instance by another (independent) Brownian motion enhanced with Lévy's stochastic area.

Weak solutions for a stochastic mean curvature flow of two-dimensional graphs

We study a stochastically perturbed mean curvature flow for graphs in $\mathbb{R}^3$ over the two-dimensional unit-cube subject to periodic boundary conditions. In particular, we establish the existence of a weak martingale solution. The proof is based on energy methods and therefore presents an alternative to the stochastic viscosity solution approach. To overcome difficulties induced by the degeneracy of the mean curvature operator and the multiplicative gradient noise present in the model we employ a three step approximation scheme together with refined stochastic compactness and martingale identification methods.

A regularity result for quasilinear stochastic partial differential equations of parabolic type

We consider a quasilinear parabolic stochastic partial differential equation driven by a multiplicative noise and study regularity properties of its weak solution satisfying classical a priori estimates. In particular, we determine conditions on coefficients and initial data under which the weak solution is Hölder continuous in time and possesses spatial regularity that is only limited by the regularity of the given data. Our proof is based on an efficient method of increasing regularity: the solution is rewritten as the sum of two processes, one solves a linear parabolic SPDE with the same noise term as the original model problem whereas the other solves a linear parabolic PDE with random coefficients. This way, the required regularity can be achieved by repeatedly making use of known techniques for stochastic convolutions and deterministic PDEs.

Compressible fluids driven by stochastic forcing: The relative energy inequality and applications

We show the relative energy inequality for the compressible Navier-Stokes system driven by a stochastic forcing. As a corollary, we prove the weak-strong uniqueness property (pathwise and in law) and convergence of weak solutions in the inviscid-incompressible limit. In particular, we establish a Yamada-Watanabe type result in the context of the compressible Navier-Stokes system, that is, pathwise weak--strong uniqueness implies weak--strong uniqueness in law.

On time regularity of stochastic evolution equations with monotone coefficients

We report on a time regularity result for stochastic evolutionary PDEs with monotone coefficients. If the diffusion coefficient is bounded in time without additional space regularity we obtain a fractional Sobolev type time regularity of order up to $\tfrac{1}{2}$ for a certain functional $ G( u )$ of the solution. Namely, $ G( u )=\nabla u $ in the case of the heat equation and $G( u )=|\nabla u |^{\frac{p-2}{2}}\nabla u $ for the $p$-Laplacian. The motivation is twofold. On the one hand, it turns out that this is the natural time regularity result that allows to establish the optimal rates of convergence for numerical schemes based on a time discretization. On the other hand, in the linear case, i.e. where the solution is given by a stochastic convolution, our result complements the known stochastic maximal space-time regularity results for the borderline case not covered by other methods.

A Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook Approximation to Stochastic Scalar Conservation Laws

We study a BGK-like approximation to hyperbolic conservation laws forced by a multiplicative noise. First, we make use of the stochastic characteristics method and establish the existence of a solution for any fi xed parameter $\varepsilon$. In the next step, we investigate the limit as $\varepsilon$ tends to 0 and show the convergence to the kinetic solution of the limit problem.

Degenerate parabolic SPDEs

We study the Cauchy problem for a scalar semilinear degenerate parabolic partial differential equation with stochastic forcing. In particular, we are concerned with the well-posedness in any space dimension. We adapt the notion of kinetic solution which is well suited for degenerate parabolic problems and supplies a good technical framework to prove the comparison principle. The proof of existence is based on the vanishing viscosity method: the solution is obtained by a compactness argument as the limit of solutions of nondegenerate approximations.

Strong solutions to semilinear SPDEs

We study the Cauchy problem for a semilinear stochastic partial differential equation driven by a finite-dimensional Wiener process. In particular, under the hypothesis that all the coefficients are sufficiently smooth and have bounded derivatives, we consider the equation in the context of power scale generated by a strongly elliptic differential operator. Application of semigroup arguments then yields the existence of a continuous strong solution.
