Stochastic interpretations of the oceanic primitive equations with relaxed hydrostatic assumptions

In this paper, we investigate how weakening the classical hydrostatic balance hypothesis impacts the well-posedness of the stochastic LU primitive equations. The models we consider are intermediate between the incompressible 3D LU Navier-Stokes equations and the LU primitive equations with standard hydrostatic balance. As such, they are expected to be numerically tractable, while accounting well for phenomena within the grey zone between hydrostatic balance and non-hydrostatic processes. Our main result is the well-posedness of a low-pass filtering-based stochastic interpretation of the LU primitive equations, with rigid-lid type boundary conditions, in the limit of ``quasi-barotropic'' flow. This assumption is linked to the structure assumption proposed in the work of Agresti et al., which can be related to the dynamical regime where the primitive equations remain valid. Furthermore, we present and study two eddy-(hyper)viscosity-based models.

Two dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation with space-time white noise

In this paper we consider the two-dimensional stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which is a model to describe Bose-Einstein condensation at positive temperature. The equation is a complex Ginzburg-Landau equation with a harmonic potential and an additive space-time white noise. We study the well-posedness of the model using an inhomogeneous Wick renormalization due to the potential, and prove the existence of an invariant measure and of stationary martingale solutions.

A Piecewise Deterministic Limit for a Multiscale Stochastic Spatial Gene Network

We consider multiscale stochastic spatial gene networks involving chemical reactions and diffusions. The model is Markovian and the transitions are driven by Poisson random clocks. We consider a case where there are two different spatial scales: a microscopic one with fast dynamic and a macroscopic one with slow dynamic. At the microscopic level, the species are abundant and for the large population limit a partial differential equation (PDE) is obtained. On the contrary at the macroscopic level, the species are not abundant and their dynamic remains governed by jump processes. It results that the PDE governing the fast dynamic contains coefficients which randomly change. The global weak limit is an infinite dimensional continuous piecewise deterministic Markov process (PDMP). Also, we prove convergence in the supremum norm.

Diffusion-approximation for a kinetic spray-like system with random forcing

We study a kinetic toy model for a spray of particles immersed in an ambient fluid, subject to some additional random forcing given by a mixing, space-dependent Markov process. Using the perturbed test function method, we derive the hydrodynamic limit of the kinetic system. The law of the limiting density satisfies a stochastic conservation equation in Stratonovich form, whose drift and diffusion coefficients are completely determined by the law of the stationary process associated with the Markovian perturbation.

Diffusion-approximation in stochastically forced kinetic equations

We derive the hydrodynamic limit of a kinetic equation where the interactions in velocity are modelled by a linear operator (Fokker-Planck or Linear Boltzmann) and the force in the Vlasov term is a stochastic process with high amplitude and short-range correlation. In the scales and the regime we consider, the hydrodynamic equation is a scalar second-order stochastic partial differential equation. Compared to the deterministic case, we also observe a phenomenon of enhanced diffusion.

Existence of martingale solutions for stochastic flocking models with local alignment

We establish the existence of martingale solutions to a class of stochastic conservation equations. The underlying models correspond to random perturbations of kinetic models for collective motion such as the Cucker-Smale and Motsch-Tadmor models. By regularizing the coefficients, we first construct approximate solutions obtained as the mean-field limit of the corresponding particle systems. We then establish the compactness in law of this family of solutions by relying on a stochastic averaging lemma. This extends the results obtained by Karper, Mellet and Trivisa in the deterministic case.

Quasi-Invariance of Gaussian Measures Transported by the Cubic NLS with Third-Order Dispersion on $\mathbf{T}$

We consider the Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation and prove that the Gaussian measure with covariance $(1-\partial_x^2)^{-α}$ on $L^2(\mathbf T)$ is quasi-invariant for the associated flow for $α>1/2$. This is sharp and improves a previous result obtained in \cite{OTT} where the values $α>3/4$ were obtained. Also, our method is completely different and simpler, it is based on an explicit formula for the Radon-Nikodym derivative. We obtain an explicit formula for this latter in the same spirit as in \cite{Cruz1} and \cite{Cruz2}. The arguments are general and can be used to other Hamiltonian equations.

Degenerate parabolic stochastic partial differential equations: Quasilinear case

In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem for a quasilinear degenerate parabolic stochastic partial differential equation driven by a cylindrical Wiener process. In particular, we adapt the notion of kinetic formulation and kinetic solution and develop a well-posedness theory that includes also an $L^1$-contraction property. In comparison to the previous works of the authors concerning stochastic hyperbolic conservation laws [J. Funct. Anal. 259 (2010) 1014-1042] and semilinear degenerate parabolic SPDEs [Stochastic Process. Appl. 123 (2013) 4294-4336], the present result contains two new ingredients that provide simpler and more effective method of the proof: a generalized Itô formula that permits a rigorous derivation of the kinetic formulation even in the case of weak solutions of certain nondegenerate approximations and a direct proof of strong convergence of these approximations to the desired kinetic solution of the degenerate problem.

Large deviations for the two-dimensional stochastic Navier-Stokes equation with vanishing noise correlation

We are dealing with the validity of a large deviation principle for the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation, with periodic boundary conditions, perturbed by a Gaussian random forcing. We are here interested in the regime where both the strength of the noise and its correlation are vanishing, on a length scale $\e$ and $\d(\e)$, respectively, with $0<\e,\ \d(\e)<<1$. Depending on the relationship between $\e$ and $\d(\e)$ we will prove the validity of the large deviation principle in different functional spaces.

Quasilinear generalized parabolic Anderson model equation

We present in this note a local in time well-posedness result for the singular $2$-dimensional quasilinear generalized parabolic Anderson model equation $$ \partial_t u - a(u)Δu = g(u)ξ$$ The key idea of our approach is a simple transformation of the equation which allows to treat the problem as a semilinear problem. The analysis is done within the elementary setting of paracontrolled calculus.

A regularity result for quasilinear stochastic partial differential equations of parabolic type

We consider a quasilinear parabolic stochastic partial differential equation driven by a multiplicative noise and study regularity properties of its weak solution satisfying classical a priori estimates. In particular, we determine conditions on coefficients and initial data under which the weak solution is Hölder continuous in time and possesses spatial regularity that is only limited by the regularity of the given data. Our proof is based on an efficient method of increasing regularity: the solution is rewritten as the sum of two processes, one solves a linear parabolic SPDE with the same noise term as the original model problem whereas the other solves a linear parabolic PDE with random coefficients. This way, the required regularity can be achieved by repeatedly making use of known techniques for stochastic convolutions and deterministic PDEs.

An integral inequality for the invariant measure of a stochastic reaction--diffusion equation

We consider a reaction--diffusion equation perturbed by noise (not necessarily white). We prove an integral inequality for the invariant measure $ν$ of a stochastic reaction--diffusion equation. Then we discuss some consequences as an integration by parts formula which extends to $ν$ a basic identity of the Malliavin Calculus. Finally, we prove the existence of a surface measure for a ball and a half-space of $H$.

Diffusion limit for the radiative transfer equation perturbed by a Markovian process

We study the stochastic diffusive limit of a kinetic radiative transfer equation, which is non-linear, involving a small parameter and perturbed by a smooth random term. Under an appropriate scaling for the small parameter, using a generalization of the perturbed test-functions method, we show the convergence in law to a stochastic non-linear fluid limit.

Diffusion limit for the radiative transfer equation perturbed by a Wiener process

The aim of this paper is the rigorous derivation of a stochastic non-linear diffusion equation from a radiative transfer equation perturbed with a random noise. The proof of the convergence relies on a formal Hilbert expansion and the estimation of the remainder. The Hilbert expansion has to be done up to order 3 to overcome some diffculties caused by the random noise.

Estimate for $P_tD$ for the stochastic Burgers equation

We consider the Burgers equation on $H=L^2(0,1)$ perturbed by white noise and the corresponding transition semigroup $P_t$. We prove a new formula for $P_tDφ$ (where $φ:H\to\R$ is bounded and Borel) which depends on $φ$ but not on its derivative. Then we deduce some new consequences for the invariant measure $ν$ of $P_t$ as its Fomin differentiability and an integration by parts formula which generalises the classical one for gaussian measures.

Invariant measure of scalar first-order conservation laws with stochastic forcing

Under an hypothesis of non-degeneracy of the flux, we study the long-time behaviour of periodic scalar first-order conservation laws with stochastic forcing in any space dimension. For sub-cubic fluxes, we show the existence of an invariant measure. Moreover for sub-quadratic fluxes we show uniqueness and ergodicity of the invariant measure. Also, since this invariant measure is supported by Lp for some p small, we are led to generalize to the stochastic case the theory of L1 solutions developed by Chen and Perthame in 2003.

Existence of densities for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations driven by Gaussian noise

We prove three results on the existence of densities for the laws of finite dimensional functionals of the solutions of the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations in dimension 3. In particular, under very mild assumptions on the noise, we prove that finite dimensional projections of the solutions have densities with respect to the Lebesgue measure which have some smoothness when measured in a Besov space. This is proved thanks to a new argument inspired by an idea introduced in Fournier and Printems (2010).

Global Existence and Regularity for the 3D Stochastic Primitive Equations of the Ocean and Atmosphere with Multiplicative White Noise

The Primitive Equations are a basic model in the study of large scale Oceanic and Atmospheric dynamics. These systems form the analytical core of the most advanced General Circulation Models. For this reason and due to their challenging nonlinear and anisotropic structure the Primitive Equations have recently received considerable attention from the mathematical community. In view of the complex multi-scale nature of the earth's climate system, many uncertainties appear that should be accounted for in the basic dynamical models of atmospheric and oceanic processes. In the climate community stochastic methods have come into extensive use in this connection. For this reason there has appeared a need to further develop the foundations of nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations in connection with the Primitive Equations and more generally. In this work we study a stochastic version of the Primitive Equations. We establish the global existence of strong, pathwise solutions for these equations in dimension 3 for the case of a nonlinear multiplicative noise. The proof makes use of anisotropic estimates, $L^{p}_{t}L^{q}_{x}$ estimates on the pressure and stopping time arguments.

Convergence of stochastic gene networks to hybrid piecewise deterministic processes

We study the asymptotic behavior of multiscale stochastic gene networks using weak limits of Markov jump processes. Depending on the time and concentration scales of the system we distinguish four types of limits: continuous piecewise deterministic processes (PDP) with switching, PDP with jumps in the continuous variables, averaged PDP, and PDP with singular switching. We justify rigorously the convergence for the four types of limits. The convergence results can be used to simplify the stochastic dynamics of gene network models arising in molecular biology.

Weak backward error analysis for SDEs

We consider numerical approximations of stochastic differential equations by the Euler method. In the case where the SDE is elliptic or hypoelliptic, we show a weak backward error analysis result in the sense that the generator associated with the numerical solution coincides with the solution of a modified Kolmogorov equation up to high order terms with respect to the stepsize. This implies that every invariant measure of the numerical scheme is close to a modified invariant measure obtained by asymptotic expansion. Moreover, we prove that, up to negligible terms, the dynamic associated with the Euler scheme is exponentially mixing.

preprint2010arXiv

Ergodic BSDEs under weak dissipative assumptions

In this paper we study ergodic backward stochastic differential equations (EBSDEs) dropping the strong dissipativity assumption needed in the previous work. In other words we do not need to require the uniform exponential decay of the difference of two solutions of the underlying forward equation, which, on the contrary, is assumed to be non degenerate. We show existence of solutions by use of coupling estimates for a non-degenerate forward stochastic differential equations with bounded measurable non-linearity. Moreover we prove uniqueness of "Markovian" solutions exploiting the recurrence of the same class of forward equations. Applications are then given to the optimal ergodic control of stochastic partial differential equations and to the associated ergodic Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations.
