Combinatorial model for the ferroelectric domain-network formation in hexagonal manganites

As the result of the high-temperature improper ferroelectric transition occurring in YMnO3 and other hexagonal manganites a striking domain pattern was observed: an emergence of six domains of alternating polarization from one point in a vortex-like pattern. We derive the formation and distribution of the domain-vortex network from a combinatorial analysis based on order-parameter symmetry and lattice geometry. The analysis leads to stable vortex-like configurations of the six domain states in the basal plane perpendicular to the polarization and to fragmented vortices in planes parallel to the polarization. The predictions are debated in the light of existing experimental and theoretical work on the vortex domain state. The relation of the symmetry-determined geomet- rical defects to the topological defects proposed to describe the behavior of YMnO3 near the Curie temperature is discussed.

Observation of persistent centrosymmetricity in the hexagonal manganite family

The controversy regarding the ferroelectric behavior of hexagonal InMnO$_3$ is resolved by using a combination of x-ray diffraction (XRD), piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), second harmonic generation (SHG), and density functional theory (DFT). While XRD data show a symmetry-lowering unit-cell tripling, which is also found in the multiferroic hexagonal manganites of $P6_3cm$ symmetry, PFM and SHG do not detect ferroelectricity at ambient or low temperature, in striking contrast to the behavior in the multiferroic counterparts. We propose instead a centrosymmetric $P\bar{3}c$ phase as the ground state structure. Our DFT calculations reveal that the relative energy of the ferroelectric and nonferroelectric structures is determined by a competition between electrostatics and oxygen-$R$-site covalency, with an absence of covalency favoring the ferroelectric phase.

Lateral Signals in Piezoresponse Force Microscopy at Domain Boundaries of Ferroelectric Crystals

In piezoresponse force microscopy a lateral signal at the domain boundaries is occasionally observed. In recent years, a couple of experiments have been reported and varying explanations for the origin of this lateral signal have been proposed. Additionally, elaborated theoretical modeling for this particular issue has been carried out. Here we present experimental data obtained on different crystallographic cuts of $\rm LiNbO_3$, $\rm BaTiO_3$, and $\rm KTiOPO_4$ single crystals. We could thereby rule out some of the explanations proposed so far, introduce another possible mechanism, and quantitatively compare our results to the existing modeling.
