A minimal b ghost

The $b$ ghost, or $b$ operator, used for fixing Siegel gauge in the pure spinor superfield formalism, is a composite operator of negative ghost number, satisfying $\{q,b\}=\square$, where $q$ is the pure spinor differential (BRST operator). It is traditionally constructed using non-minimal variables. However, since all cohomology has minimal representatives, it seems likely that there should be versions of physically meaningful operators, also with negative ghost number, using only minimal variables. The purpose of this letter is to demonstrate that this statement holds by providing a concrete construction in $D=10$ super-Yang-Mills theory, and to argue that it is a general feature in the pure spinor superfield formalism.

Tensor hierarchy algebras and restricted associativity

We study local algebras, which are structures similar to $\mathbb{Z}$-graded algebras concentrated in degrees $-1,0,1$, but without a product defined for pairs of elements at the same degree $\pm1$. To any triple consisting of a Kac-Moody algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ with an invertible and symmetrisable Cartan matrix, a dominant integral weight of $\mathfrak{g}$ and an invariant symmetric bilinear form on $\mathfrak{g}$, we associate a local algebra satisfying a restricted version of associativity. From it, we derive a local Lie superalgebra by a commutator construction. Under certain conditions, we identify generators which we show satisfy the relations of the tensor hierarchy algebra $W$ previously defined from the same data. The result suggests that an underlying structure satisfying such a restricted associativity may be useful in applications of tensor hierarchy algebras to extended geometry.

Teleparallelism in the algebraic approach to extended geometry

Extended geometry is based on an underlying tensor hierarchy algebra. We extend the previously considered $L_\infty$ structure of the local symmetries (the diffeomorphisms and their reducibility) to incorporate physical fields, field strengths and Bianchi identities, and identify these as elements of the tensor hierarchy algebra. The field strengths arise as generalised torsion, so the naturally occurring complex in the $L_\infty$ algebra is $\ldots\leftarrow$ torsion BI's $\leftarrow$ torsion $\leftarrow$ vielbein $\leftarrow$ diffeomorphism parameters $\leftarrow\ldots$ In order to obtain equations of motion, which are not in this complex, (pseudo-)actions, quadratic in torsion, are given for a large class of models. This requires considering the dual complex. We show how local invariance under the compact subgroup locally defined by a generalised metric arises as a "dual gauge symmetry" associated with a certain torsion Bianchi identity, generalising Lorentz invariance in the teleparallel formulation of gravity. The analysis is performed for a large class of finite-dimensional structure groups, with $E_5$ as a detailed example. The continuation to infinite-dimensional cases is discussed.

Tensor hierarchy algebras and extended geometry I: Construction of the algebra

Tensor hierarchy algebras constitute a class of non-contragredient Lie superalgebras, whose finite-dimensional members are the "Cartan-type" Lie superalgebras in Kac's classification. They have applications in mathematical physics, especially in extended geometry and gauged supergravity. We further develop the recently proposed definition of tensor hierarchy algebras in terms of generators and relations encoded in a Dynkin diagram (which coincides with the diagram for a related Borcherds superalgebra). We apply it to cases where a grey node is added to the Dynkin diagram of a rank $r+1$ Kac-Moody algebra $\mathfrak{g}^+$, which in turn is an extension of a rank $r$ finite-dimensional semisimple simply laced Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. The algebras are specified by $\mathfrak{g}$ together with a dominant integral weight $λ$. As a by-product, a remarkable identity involving representation matrices for arbitrary integral highest weight representations of $\mathfrak{g}$ is proven. An accompanying paper describes the application of tensor hierarchy algebras to the gauge structure and dynamics in models of extended geometry.

Tensor hierarchy algebras and extended geometry II: Gauge structure and dynamics

The recent investigation of the gauge structure of extended geometry is generalised to situations when ancillary transformations appear in the commutator of two generalised diffeomorphisms. The relevant underlying algebraic structure turns out to be a tensor hierarchy algebra rather than a Borcherds superalgebra. This tensor hierarchy algebra is a non-contragredient superalgebra, generically infinite-dimensional, which is a double extension of the structure algebra of the extended geometry. We use it to perform a (partial) analysis of the gauge structure in terms of an $L_\infty$ algebra for extended geometries based on finite-dimensional structure groups. An invariant pseudo-action is also given in these cases. We comment on the continuation to infinite-dimensional structure groups. An accompanying paper deals with the mathematical construction of the tensor hierarchy algebras.

Double supergeometry

A geometry of superspace corresponding to double field theory is developed, with type II supergravity in D=10 as the main example. The formalism is based on an orthosymplectic extension OSp(d,d|2s) of the continuous T-duality group. Covariance under generalised super-diffeomorphisms is manifest. Ordinary superspace is obtained as a solution of the orthosymplectic section condition. A systematic study of curved superspace Bianchi identities is performed, and a relation to a double pure spinor superfield cohomology is established. A Ramond-Ramond superfield is constructed as an infinite-dimensional orthosymplectic spinor. Such objects in minimal orbits under the OSp supergroup ("pure spinors") define super-sections.

$E_8$ geometry

We investigate exceptional generalised diffeomorphisms based on $E_{8(8)}$ in a geometric setting. The transformations include gauge transformations for the dual gravity field. The surprising key result, which allows for a development of a tensor formalism, is that it is possible to define field-dependent transformations containing connection, which are covariant. We solve for the spin connection and construct a curvature tensor. A geometry for the Ehlers symmetry SL(n+1) is sketched. Some related issues are discussed.

Superalgebras, constraints and partition functions

We consider Borcherds superalgebras obtained from semisimple finite-dimensional Lie algebras by adding an odd null root to the simple roots. The additional Serre relations can be expressed in a covariant way. The spectrum of generators at positive levels are associated to partition functions for a certain set of constrained bosonic variables, the constraints on which are complementary to the Serre relations in the symmetric product. We give some examples, focusing on superalgebras related to pure spinors, exceptional geometry and tensor hierarchies, of how construction of the content of the algebra at arbitrary levels is simplified.

Twistors and supertwistors for exceptional field theory

As a means of examining the section condition and its possible solutions and relaxations, we perform twistor transforms related to versions of exceptional field theory with Minkowski signature. The spinor parametrisation of the momenta naturally solves simultaneously both the mass-shell condition and the (weak) section condition. It is shown that the incidence relations for multi-particle twistors force them to share a common section, but not to be orthogonal. The supersymmetric extension contains additional scalar fermionic variables shown to be kappa-symmetry invariants. We speculate on some implications, among them a possible relation to higher spin theory.

Global aspects of double geometry

We consider the concept of a generalised manifold in the O(d,d) setting, i.e., in double geometry. The conjecture by Hohm and Zwiebach for the form of finite generalised diffeomorphisms is shown to hold. Transition functions on overlaps are defined. Triple overlaps are trivial concerning their action on coordinates, but non-trivial on fields, including the generalised metric. A generalised manifold is an ordinary manifold, but the generalised metric on the manifold carries a gerbe structure. We show how the abelian behaviour of the gerbe is embedded in the non-abelian T-duality group. We also comment on possibilities and difficulties in the U-duality setting.

T-duality and non-geometric solutions from double geometry

Although the introduction of generalised and extended geometry has been motivated mainly by the appearance of dualities upon reductions on tori, it has until now been unclear how (all) the duality transformations arise from first principles in extended geometry. A proposal for solving this problem is given in the framework of double field theory. It is based on a clearly defined extension of the definition of gauge symmetry by isometries of an underlying pseudo-Riemannian manifold. The ensuing relation between transformations of coordinates and fields, which is now derived from first principles, differs from earlier proposals.

The geometry behind double geometry

Generalised diffeomorphisms in double field theory rely on an O(d,d) structure defined on tangent space. We show that any (pseudo-)Riemannian metric on the doubled space defines such a structure, in the sense that the generalised diffeomorphisms defined using such a metric form an algebra, provided a covariant section condition is fulfilled. Consistent solutions of the section condition gives further restrictions. The case previously considered corresponds to a flat metric. The construction makes it possible to apply double geometry to a larger class of manifolds. Examples of curved defining metrics are given. We also comment on the role of the defining geometry for the symmetries of double field theory, and on the continuation of the present construction to the U-duality setting.

Loop amplitudes in maximal supergravity with manifest supersymmetry

We present a description for amplitude diagrams in maximal supergravities obtained by dimensional reduction from D=11, derived from a field theory point of view using the pure spinor formalism. The advantages of this approach are the manifest supersymmetry present in the formalism, and the limited number of interaction terms in the action. Furthermore, we investigate the conditions set by this description in order for amplitudes in maximal supergravity to be finite in the ultraviolet limit. Typically, there is an upper limit to the dimension, set by the loop order, which for an arbitrary number of loops is no larger than two. In four dimensions, the non-renormalisation power of the formalism fails for the 7-loop contribution to the 4-point amplitude, all of which is in clear agreement with previous work.

Non-gravitational exceptional supermultiplets

We examine non-gravitational minimal supermultiplets which are based on the tensor gauge fields appearing as matter fields in exceptional generalised geometry. When possible, off-shell multiplets are given. The fields in the multiplets describe non-gravitational parts of the internal dynamics of compactifications of M-theory. In flat backgrounds, they enjoy a global U-duality symmetry, but also provide multiplets with a possibility of coupling to a generalised exceptional geometry.

Pure spinor superfields -- an overview

Maximally supersymmetric theories do not allow off-shell superspace formulations with traditional superfields containing a finite set of auxiliary fields. It has become clear that off-shell supersymmetric action formulations of such models can be achieved by the introduction of pure spinors. In this talk, an overview of this formalism is given, with emphasis on D=10 super-Yang-Mills theory and D=11 supergravity. This a somewhat expanded version of a talk presented at the workshop "Breaking of supersymmetry and ultraviolet divergences in extended supergravity" (BUDS), Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati, March 25-28, 2013.

The gauge structure of generalised diffeomorphisms

We investigate the generalised diffeomorphisms in M-theory, which are gauge transformations unifying diffeomorphisms and tensor gauge transformations. After giving an En(n)-covariant description of the gauge transformations and their commutators, we show that the gauge algebra is infinitely reducible, i.e., the tower of ghosts for ghosts is infinite. The Jacobiator of generalised diffeomorphisms gives such a reducibility transformation. We give a concrete description of the ghost structure, and demonstrate that the infinite sums give the correct (regularised) number of degrees of freedom. The ghost towers belong to the sequences of rep- resentations previously observed appearing in tensor hierarchies and Borcherds algebras. All calculations rely on the section condition, which we reformulate as a linear condition on the cotangent directions. The analysis holds for n < 8. At n = 8, where the dual gravity field becomes relevant, the natural guess for the gauge parameter and its reducibility still yields the correct counting of gauge parameters.

The geometry of pure spinor space

We investigate the complex geometry of D=10 pure spinor space. The Kähler structure and the corresponding metric giving rise to the desired Calabi-Yau property are determined, and an explicit covariant expression for the Laplacian is given. The metric is not that of a cone obtained by embedding pure spinor space in a flat space of unconstrained spinors. Some directions for future studies, concerning regularisation and generalisation to eleven dimensions, are briefly discussed.

D=3, N=8 conformal supergravity and the Dragon window

We give a superspace description of D=3, N=8 supergravity. The formulation is off-shell in the sense that the equations of motion are not implied by the superspace constraints (but an action principle is not given). The multiplet structure is unconventional, which we connect to the existence of a "Dragon window", that is modules occurring in the supercurvature but not in the supertorsion. According to Dragon's theorem this cannot happen above three dimensions. We clarify the relevance of this window for going on the conformal shell, and discuss some aspects of coupling to conformal matter.

Pure spinor superfields and Born-Infeld theory

We present a method for introducing and analysing higher-derivative deformations of maximally supersymmetric field theories. Such terms are built in the pure spinor superfield framework, using a set of operators representing physical fields. The action for abelian Born-Infeld theory becomes polynomial in this language, and contains only a four-point interaction in addition to the free action. Simplifications also occur in the non-abelian case.

From supergeometry to pure spinors

In this talk, we review how the superspace formulation of maximally supersymmetric field theories (including supergravity) naturally leads to introduction of pure spinors and pure spinor superfields, and why the formalism provides off-shell formulations. This approach to pure spinor superfields thus stresses field-theoretic aspects rather than the first-quantised ones normally used e.g. in superstring theory. We discuss how the BRST operator arises and the principles behind constructions of actions, as well as the general Batalin-Vilkovisky framework. D=11 supergravity and its recently constructed supersymmetric action are taken as an example throughout the talk. This is the written version of a lecture given at the 6th Mathematical Physics Meeting, Belgrade, September 2010.

Open and Winding Membranes, Affine Matrix Theory and Matrix String Theory

We examine the structure of winding toroidal and open cylindrical membranes, especially in cases where they are stretched between boundaries. Non-zero winding or stretching means that there are linear terms in the mode expansion of the coordinates obeying Dirichlet boundary conditions. A linear term acts as an outer derivation on the subalgebra of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms generated by single-valued functions, and obstructs the truncation to matrix theory obtained via non-commutativity with rational parameter. As long as only one of the two membrane directions is stretched, the possible consistent truncation is to coordinates taking values in representations of an affine algebra. We show that this consistent truncation of the supermembrane gives a precise microscopic derivation of matrix string theory with the representation content appropriate for the physical situation. The matrix superstring theory describing parallel M5-branes is derived. We comment on the possible applications of the construction to membrane quantisation in certain M-theory backgrounds.

D=10 Super-Yang-Mills at O(alpha'^2)

Using superspace techniques, the complete and most general action of D=10 super-Yang--Mills theory is constructed at the alpha'^2 level. No other approximations, e.g., keeping only a subset of the allowed derivative terms, are used. The Lorentz structure of the alpha'^2 corrections is completely determined, while (depending on the gauge group) there is some freedom in the adjoint structure, which is given by a totally symmetric four-index tensor. We examine the second, non-linearly realised supersymmetry that may be present when the gauge group has a U(1) factor, and find that the constraints from linear and non-linear supersymmetry to a large extent coincide. However, the additional restrictions on the adjoint structure of the order alpha'^2 interactions following from the requirement of non-linear supersymmetry do not completely specify the symmetrised trace prescription.

Holographic Noncommutativity

We examine noncommutative Yang-Mills and open string theories using magnetically and electrically deformed supergravity duals. The duals are near horizon regions of Dp-brane bound state solutions which are obtained by using O(p+1,p+1) transformations of Dp-branes. The action of the T-duality group implies that the noncommutativity parameter is constant along holographic RG-flows. The moduli of the noncommutative theory, i.e., the open string metric and coupling constant, as well as the zero-force condition are shown to be invariant under the O(p+1,p+1) transformation, i.e., deformation independent. We find sufficient conditions, including zero force and constant dilaton in the ISO(3,1)-invariant D3 brane solution, for exact S-duality between noncommutative Yang-Mills and open string theories. These results are used to construct noncommutative field and string theories with N=1 supersymmetry from the T^(1,1) and Pilch-Warner solutions. The latter has a non-trivial zero-force condition due to the warping.

The structure of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory: constraining higher-order corrections

We solve the superspace Bianchi identities for ten-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory without imposing any kind of constraints apart from the standard conventional one. In this way we obtain a set of algebraic conditions on certain fields which in the on-shell theory are constructed as composite ones out of the physical fields. These conditions must hence be satisfied by any kind of theory in ten dimensions invariant under supersymmetry and some, abelian or non-abelian, gauge symmetry. Deformations of the ordinary SYM theory (as well as the fields) are identified as elements of a certain spinorial cohomology, giving control over field redefinitions and the distinction between physically relevant higher-order corrections and those removable by field redefinitions. The conditions derived severely constrain theories involving F^2-level terms plus higher-order corrections, as for instance those derived from open strings as effective gauge theories on D-branes.

World-volume fields and background coupling of branes

This is the written version of an invited talk delivered at the workshop ``Quantum gravity in the Southern Cone'' held in San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina, January 7-10, 1998. After giving a brief introduction to the concept of branes and their role in string theory, this talk describes a method for formulating the dynamics of branes, especially those containing non-scalar moduli. Emphasis is put on the coupling of branes to fields in the low-energy background supergravity theories, and on preservation of maximal amount of manifest symmetry. Due to the nature of the workshop, the presentation is aimed at physicists who are not experts in string theory.

Deformations in Closed String Theory -- Canonical Formulation and Regularization

We study deformations of closed string theory by primary fields of conformal weight $(1,1)$, using conformal techniques on the complex plane. A canonical surface integral formalism for computing commutators in a non-holomorphic theory is constructed, and explicit formulæfor deformations of operators are given. We identify the unique regularization of the arising divergences that respects conformal invariance, and consider the corresponding parallel transport. The associated connection is metric compatible and carries no curvature.

Schwinger Terms and Cohomology of Pseudodifferential Operators

We study the cohomology of the Schwinger term arising in second quantization of the class of observables belonging to the restricted general linear algebra. We prove that, for all pseudodifferential operators in 3+1 dimensions of this type, the Schwinger term is equivalent to the ``twisted'' Radul cocycle, a modified version of the Radul cocycle arising in non-commutative differential geometry. In the process we also show how the ordinary Radul cocycle for any pair of pseudodifferential operators in any dimension can be written as the phase space integral of the star commutator of their symbols projected to the appropriate asymptotic component.

Why Don't We Have a Covariant Superstring Field Theory?

This talk deals with the old problem of formulatingn a covariant quantum theory of superstrings, ``covariant'' here meaning having manifest Lorentz symmetry and supersymmetry. The advantages and disadvantages of several quantization methods are reviewed. Special emphasis is put on the approaches using twistorial variables, and the algebraic structures of these. Some unsolved problems are identified.
