On the squashed seven-sphere operator spectrum

We derive major parts of the eigenvalue spectrum of the operators on the squashed seven-sphere that appear in the compactification of eleven-dimensional supergravity. These spectra determine the mass spectrum of the fields in $AdS_4$ and are important for the corresponding ${\mathcal N} =1$ supermultiplet structure. This work is a continuation of the work in [1] where the complete spectrum of irreducible isometry representations of the fields in $AdS_4$ was derived for this compactification. Some comments are also made concerning the $G_2$ holonomy and its implications on the structure of the operator equations on the squashed seven-sphere.

On the conformal higher spin unfolded equation for a three-dimensional self-interacting scalar field

We propose field equations for the conformal higher spin system in three dimensions coupled to a conformal scalar field with a sixth order potential. Both the higher spin equation and the unfolded equation for the scalar field have source terms and are based on a conformal higher spin algebra which we treat as an expansion in multi-commutators. Explicit expressions for the source terms are suggested and subjected to some simple tests. We also discuss a cascading relation between the Chern-Simons action for the higher spin gauge theory and an action containing a term for each spin that generalizes the spin 2 Chern-Simons action in terms of the spin connection expressed in terms of the frame field. This cascading property is demonstrated in the free theory for spin 3 but should work also in the complete higher spin theory.

The non-linear coupled spin 2 - spin 3 Cotton equation in three dimensions

In the context of three-dimensional conformal higher spin theory we derive, in the frame field formulation, the full non-linear spin 3 Cotton equation coupled to spin 2. This is done by solving the corresponding Chern-Simons gauge theory system of equations, that is, using $F=0$ to eliminate all auxiliary fields and thus expressing the Cotton equation in terms of just the spin 3 frame field and spin 2 covariant derivatives and tensors (Schouten). In this derivation we neglect the spin 4 and higher spin sectors and approximate the star product commutator by a Poisson bracket. The resulting spin 3 Cotton equation is complicated but can be related to linearized versions in the metric formulation obtained previously by other authors. The expected symmetry (spin 3 "translation", "Lorentz" and "dilatation") properties are verified for Cotton and other relevant tensors but some perhaps unexpected features emerge in the process, in particular in relation to the non-linear equations. We discuss the structure of this non-linear spin 3 Cotton equation but its explicit form is only presented here, in an exact but not completely refined version, in appended files obtained by computer algebra methods. Both the frame field and metric formulations are provided.

Towards an exact frame formulation of conformal higher spins in three dimensions

In this note we discuss some aspects of the frame formulation of conformal higher spins in three dimensions. We give some exact formulae for the coupled spin two - spin three part of the full higher spin theory and propose a star product Lagrangian for all spins from two and up. Since there is no consistent Lagrangian formulation based on the Poisson bracket we start the construction from the field equations in this approximation of the star product. The higher spin algebra is then realized in terms of classical variables which leads to certain important simplifications that we take advantage of. The suggested structure of the all-spin Lagrangian given here is, however, obtained using an expansion of the star product beyond the Poisson bracket in terms of multi-commutators and the Lagrangian should be viewed as a starting point for the derivation of the full theory based on a star product. How to do this is explained as well as how to include the coupling to scalar fields. We also comment on the AdS/CFT relation to four dimensions.

Critical solutions in topologically gauged N=8 CFTs in three dimensions

In this paper we discuss some special (critical) background solutions that arise in topological gauged ${\mathcal N}=8$ three-dimensional CFTs with SO(N) gauge group. These solutions solve the TMG equations (containing the parameters $μ$ and $l$) for a certain set of values of $μl$ obtained by varying the number of scalar fields with a VEV. Apart from Minkowski, chiral round $AdS_3$ and null-warped $AdS_3$ (or Schrödinger(z=2)) we identify also a more exotic solution recently found in $TMG$ by Ertl, Grumiller and Johansson. We also discuss the spectrum, symmetry breaking pattern and the supermultiplet structure in the various backgrounds and argue that some properties are due to their common origin in a conformal phase. Some of the scalar fields, including all higgsed ones, turn out to satisfy three-dimensional singleton field equations. Finally, we note that topologically gauged ${\mathcal N}=6$ ABJ(M) theories have a similar, but more restricted, set of background solutions.

Off-shell structure of twisted (2,0) theory

A $Q$-exact off-shell action is constructed for twisted abelian (2,0) theory on a Lorentzian six-manifold of the form $M_{1,5} = C\times M_4$, where $C$ is a flat two-manifold and $M_4$ is a general Euclidean four-manifold. The properties of this formulation, which is obtained by introducing two auxiliary fields, can be summarised by a commutative diagram where the Lagrangian and its stress-tensor arise from the $Q$-variation of two fermionic quantities $V$ and $λ^{μν}$. This completes and extends the analysis in [arXiv:1311.3300].

Aspects of topologically gauged M2-branes with six supersymmetries: towards a "sequential AdS/CFT"?

In this note we review the construction of topologically gauged M2 branes with 6 supersymmetries and discuss some of its properties. This is done using the 3-algebra formulation thereby covering all possible gauge groups. We will elaborate upon 1) the fundamental identity and its solutions noting, provided these gauged theories describe stacks of branes, the case of a single brane, 2) the chiral point solution to the field equations (occuring even for a single brane) that breaks the superconformal symmetries down to those of AdS_3 (TMG) supergravity, 3) physical parameters and how they scale in the compactification from 11d to 10d and give rise to matter theories in curved space-times, and finally 4) a more speculative comment on "sequential AdS/CFT". Here we propose that the superconformal symmetry breaking in topologically gauged theories leads to the sequence AdS_4/CFT_3 -> AdS_3/CFT_2 and that the higgsing in the 3d boundary theory is related to a change of foliation in the AdS_4 bulk theory.

Topologically gauged superconformal Chern-Simons matter theories

By coupling {\cal N}=8 superconformal matter to {\cal N}=8 superconformal Chern-Simons gravity in three dimensions we obtain theories with novel terms in the scalar potential leading to AdS_3 solutions and superconformal symmetry breaking. If we start from the theory derived by Bagger, Lambert and Gustavsson, our coupled theory either inherits the SO(4) gauge group or reduces it to SO(3). If the construction is instead based on a free matter theory we find that the gravitational topological gauging also requires the introduction of a Chern-Simons gauge sector resulting in a consistent theory for any SO(N) gauge group.

D=3, N=8 conformal supergravity and the Dragon window

We give a superspace description of D=3, N=8 supergravity. The formulation is off-shell in the sense that the equations of motion are not implied by the superspace constraints (but an action principle is not given). The multiplet structure is unconventional, which we connect to the existence of a "Dragon window", that is modules occurring in the supercurvature but not in the supertorsion. According to Dragon's theorem this cannot happen above three dimensions. We clarify the relevance of this window for going on the conformal shell, and discuss some aspects of coupling to conformal matter.

Higgsing M2 to D2 with gravity: N=6 chiral supergravity from topologically gauged ABJM theory

We present the higgsing of three-dimensional N=6 superconformal ABJM type theories coupled to conformal supergravity, so called topologically gauged ABJM theory, thus providing a gravitational extension of previous work on the relation between N M2 and N D2-branes. The resulting N=6 supergravity theory appears at a chiral point similar to that of three-dimensional chiral gravity introduced recently by Li, Song and Strominger, but with the opposite sign for the Ricci scalar term in the lagrangian. We identify the supersymmetry in the broken phase as a particular linear combination of the supersymmetry and special conformal supersymmetry in the original topologically gauged ABJM theory. We also discuss the higgsing procedure in detail paying special attention to the role played by the U(1) factors in the original ABJM model and the U(1) introduced in the topological gauging.

Instanton Corrections to the Universal Hypermultiplet and Automorphic Forms on SU(2,1)

The hypermultiplet moduli space in Type IIA string theory compactified on a rigid Calabi-Yau threefold X, corresponding to the "universal hypermultiplet", is described at tree-level by the symmetric space SU(2,1)/(SU(2) x U(1)). To determine the quantum corrections to this metric, we posit that a discrete subgroup of the continuous tree-level isometry group SU(2,1), namely the Picard modular group SU(2,1;Z[i]), must remain unbroken in the exact metric -- including all perturbative and non perturbative quantum corrections. This assumption is expected to be valid when X admits complex multiplication by Z[i]. Based on this hypothesis, we construct an SU(2,1;Z[i])-invariant, non-holomorphic Eisenstein series, and tentatively propose that this Eisenstein series provides the exact contact potential on the twistor space over the universal hypermultiplet moduli space. We analyze its non-Abelian Fourier expansion, and show that the Abelian and non-Abelian Fourier coefficients take the required form for instanton corrections due to Euclidean D2-branes wrapping special Lagrangian submanifolds, and to Euclidean NS5-branes wrapping the entire Calabi-Yau threefold, respectively. While this tentative proposal fails to reproduce the correct one-loop correction, the consistency of the Fourier expansion with physics expectations provides strong support for the utility of the Picard modular group in constraining the quantum moduli space.

Light-cone analysis of ungauged and topologically gauged BLG theories

We consider three-dimensional maximally superconformal Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson (BLG) theory and its topologically gauged version (constructed recently in arXiv:0809.4478 [hep-th]) in the light-cone gauge. After eliminating the entire Chern-Simons gauge field, the ungauged BLG theory looks more conventional and, apart from the order of the interaction terms, resembles N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions. The light-cone superspace version of the BLG theory is given to quadratic and quartic order and some problems with constructing the sixth order interaction terms are discussed. In the topologically gauged case, we analyze the field equations related to the three Chern-Simons type terms of N=8 conformal supergravity and discuss some of the special features of this theory and its couplings to BLG.

Rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds, Picard Eisenstein series and instantons

Type IIA string theory compactified on a rigid Calabi-Yau threefold gives rise to a classical moduli space that carries an isometric action of U(2,1). Various quantum corrections break this continuous isometry to a discrete subgroup. Focussing on the case where the intermediate Jacobian of the Calabi-Yau admits complex multiplication by the ring of quadratic imaginary integers O_d, we argue that the remaining quantum duality group is an arithmetic Picard modular group PU(2,1;O_d). Based on this proposal we construct an Eisenstein series invariant under this duality group and study its non-Abelian Fourier expansion. This allows the prediction of non-perturbative effects, notably the contribution of D2- and NS5-brane instantons. The present work extends our previous analysis in 0909.4299 which was restricted to the special case of the Gaussian integers O_1=Z[i].

Three-dimensional topologically gauged N=6 ABJM type theories

In this paper we construct the $\mathcal N=6$ conformal supergravity in three dimensions from a set of Chern-Simons-like terms one for each of the graviton, gravitino, and R-symmetry gauge field and then couple this theory to the $\mathcal N=6$ superconformal ABJM theory. In a first step part of the coupled Lagrangian for this topologically gauged ABJM theory is derived by demanding that all terms of third and second order in covariant derivatives cancel in the supersymmtry variation of the Lagrangian. To achieve this the transformation rules of the two separate sectors must be augmented by new terms. In a second step we analyze all terms in $δL$ that are of first order in covariant derivatives. The cancelation of these terms require additional terms in the transformation rules as well as a number of new terms in the Lagrangian. As a final step we check that all remaining terms in $δL$ which are bilinear in fermions cancel which means that the presented Lagrangian and transformation rules constitute the complete answer. In particular we find in the last step new terms in the scalar potential containing either one or no structure constant. The non-derivative higher fermion terms in $δL$ that have not yet been completely analyzed are briefly discussed.

D=10 Super-Yang-Mills at O(alpha'^2)

Using superspace techniques, the complete and most general action of D=10 super-Yang--Mills theory is constructed at the alpha'^2 level. No other approximations, e.g., keeping only a subset of the allowed derivative terms, are used. The Lorentz structure of the alpha'^2 corrections is completely determined, while (depending on the gauge group) there is some freedom in the adjoint structure, which is given by a totally symmetric four-index tensor. We examine the second, non-linearly realised supersymmetry that may be present when the gauge group has a U(1) factor, and find that the constraints from linear and non-linear supersymmetry to a large extent coincide. However, the additional restrictions on the adjoint structure of the order alpha'^2 interactions following from the requirement of non-linear supersymmetry do not completely specify the symmetrised trace prescription.

Holographic Noncommutativity

We examine noncommutative Yang-Mills and open string theories using magnetically and electrically deformed supergravity duals. The duals are near horizon regions of Dp-brane bound state solutions which are obtained by using O(p+1,p+1) transformations of Dp-branes. The action of the T-duality group implies that the noncommutativity parameter is constant along holographic RG-flows. The moduli of the noncommutative theory, i.e., the open string metric and coupling constant, as well as the zero-force condition are shown to be invariant under the O(p+1,p+1) transformation, i.e., deformation independent. We find sufficient conditions, including zero force and constant dilaton in the ISO(3,1)-invariant D3 brane solution, for exact S-duality between noncommutative Yang-Mills and open string theories. These results are used to construct noncommutative field and string theories with N=1 supersymmetry from the T^(1,1) and Pilch-Warner solutions. The latter has a non-trivial zero-force condition due to the warping.

The structure of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory: constraining higher-order corrections

We solve the superspace Bianchi identities for ten-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory without imposing any kind of constraints apart from the standard conventional one. In this way we obtain a set of algebraic conditions on certain fields which in the on-shell theory are constructed as composite ones out of the physical fields. These conditions must hence be satisfied by any kind of theory in ten dimensions invariant under supersymmetry and some, abelian or non-abelian, gauge symmetry. Deformations of the ordinary SYM theory (as well as the fields) are identified as elements of a certain spinorial cohomology, giving control over field redefinitions and the distinction between physically relevant higher-order corrections and those removable by field redefinitions. The conditions derived severely constrain theories involving F^2-level terms plus higher-order corrections, as for instance those derived from open strings as effective gauge theories on D-branes.

A Study of Holographic Renormalization Group Flows in d=6 and d=3

We present an explicit study of the holographic renormalization group (RG) in six dimensions using minimal gauged supergravity. By perturbing the theory with the addition of a relevant operator of dimension four one flows to a non-supersymmetric conformal fixed point. There are also solutions describing non-conformal vacua of the same theory obtained by giving an expectation value to the operator. One such vacuum is supersymmetric and is obtained by using the true superpotential of the theory. We discuss the physical acceptability of these vacua by applying the criteria recently given by Gubser for the four dimensional case and find that those criteria give a clear physical picture in the six dimensional case as well. We use this example to comment on the role of the Hamilton-Jacobi equations in implementing the RG. We conclude with some remarks on AdS_4 and the status of three dimensional superconformal theories from squashed solutions of M-theory.

Holomorphic factorization of correlation functions in (4k+2)-dimensional (2k)-form gauge theory

We consider a free (2 k)-form gauge-field on a Euclidean (4 k + 2)-manifold. The parameters needed to specify the action and the gauge-invariant observables take their values in spaces with natural complex structures. We show that the correlation functions can be written as a finite sum of terms, each of which is a product of a holomorphic and an anti-holomorphic factor. The holomorphic factors are naturally interpreted as correlation functions for a chiral (2 k)-form, i.e. a (2 k)-form with a self-dual (2 k + 1)-form field strength, after Wick rotation to a Minkowski signature.

Schwinger Terms and Cohomology of Pseudodifferential Operators

We study the cohomology of the Schwinger term arising in second quantization of the class of observables belonging to the restricted general linear algebra. We prove that, for all pseudodifferential operators in 3+1 dimensions of this type, the Schwinger term is equivalent to the ``twisted'' Radul cocycle, a modified version of the Radul cocycle arising in non-commutative differential geometry. In the process we also show how the ordinary Radul cocycle for any pair of pseudodifferential operators in any dimension can be written as the phase space integral of the star commutator of their symbols projected to the appropriate asymptotic component.

Gluing of Branched Surfaces by Sewing of Fermionic String Vertices

We glue together two branched spheres by sewing of two Ramond (dual) two-fermion string vertices and present a rigorous analytic derivation of the closed expression for the four-fermion string vertex. This method treats all oscillator levels collectively and the obtained answer verifies that the closed form of the four vertex previously argued for on the basis of explicit results restricted to the first two oscillator levels is the correct one.
