Dispersive regularization for phase transitions

We introduce a dispersive regularization of the compressible Euler equations in Lagrangian coordinates, in the one-dimensional torus. We assume a Van der Waals pressure law, which presents both hyperbolic and elliptic zones. The dispersive regularization is of Schroedinger type. In particular, the regularized system is complex-valued. It has a conservation law, which, for real unknowns, is identical to the energy of the unregularized physical system. The regularized system supports high-frequency solutions, with an existence time or an amplitude which depend strongly on the pressure law.

Nonlinear metastability for a parabolic system of reaction-diffusion equations

We consider a system of reaction-diffusion equations in a bounded interval of the real line, with emphasis on the metastable dynamics, whereby the time-dependent solution approaches its steady state in an asymptotically exponentially long time interval as the viscosity coefficient $\varepsilon>0$ goes to zero. To rigorous describe such behavior, we analyze the dynamics of solutions in a neighborhood of a one-parameter family of approximate steady states, and we derive an ODE for the position of the internal interfaces.

Slow dynamics in reaction-diffusion systems

We consider a system of reaction-diffusion equations in a bounded interval of the real line, with emphasis on the metastable dynamics, whereby the time-dependent solution approaches the steady state in an asymptotically exponentially long time interval as the viscosity coefficient $\varepsilon>0$ goes to zero. To rigorous describe such behavior, we analyze the dynamics of layered solutions localized far from the stable configurations of the system, and we derive an ODE for the position of the internal interfaces.

Asymptotic behavior of interface solutions to quasilinear parabolic equations with nonlinear forcing terms

We investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions for quasilinear parabolic equations in bounded intervals. In particular, we are concerned with a special class of solutions, called interface solutions, which exhibit e metastable behavior, meaning that their convergence towards the asymptotic configuration of the system is exponentially slow. The key of our analysis is a linearization around an approximation of the steady state of the problem, and the reduction of the dynamics to a one-dimensional motion, describing the slow convergence of the interfaces towards the equilibrium.

Metastable dynamics of internal interfaces for a convection-reaction-diffusion equation

We study a one dimensional metastable dynamics of internal interfaces for the initial boundary value problem for the following convection-reaction-diffusion equation \begin{equation*} \partial_t u = \varepsilon \partial_x^2 u -\partial_x f(u)+ f'(u). \end{equation*} A metastable behavior appears when the time-dependent solution develops into a layered function in a relatively short time, and subsequent approaches its steady state in a very long time interval. A rigorous analysis is used to study such behavior, by means of the construction of a one-parameter family $\{ U^\varepsilon(x;ξ)\}_ξ$ of approximate stationary solutions and of a linearization of the original system around an element of this family. We obtain a system consisting in an ODE for the parameter $ξ$, describing the position of the interface, coupled with a PDE for the perturbation $v$, defined as the difference $v:=u-U^\varepsilon$. The key of our analysis are the spectral properties of the linearized operator around an element of the family $\{ U^\varepsilon \}$: the presence of a first eigenvalue, small with respect to $\varepsilon$, leads to a metastable behavior when $\varepsilon \ll 1$.

Time-delayed instabilities in complex Burgers equations

For Burgers equations with real data and complex forcing terms, Lerner, Morimoto and Xu [{\it Instability of the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya solution for a class of non-linear systems}, Amer.~J.~Math.~2010] proved that only analytical data generate local $C^2$ solutions. The corresponding instabilities are however not observed numerically; rather, numerical simulations show an exponential growth only after a delay in time. We argue that numerical diffusion is responsible for this time delay, as we prove that for Burgers equations in the torus with small viscosity and a complex forcing, oscillating data generate solutions which grow linearly in time before growing exponentially. Numerical simulations illustrate the results.

Slow motion of internal shock layers for the Jin-Xin system in one space dimension

This paper considers the slow motion of the shock layer exhibited by the solution to the initial-boundary value problem for a scalar hyperbolic system with relaxation. Such behavior, known as metastable dynamics, is related to the presence of a first small eigenvalue for the linearized operator around an equilibrium state; as a consequence, the time-dependent solution approaches its steady state in an asymptotically exponentially long time interval. In this contest, both rigorous and asymptotic approaches are used to analyze such slow motion for the Jin-Xin system. To describe this dynamics we derive an ODE for the the position of the internal transition layer, proving how it drifts towards the equilibrium location with a speed rate that is exponentially slow. These analytical results are also validated by numerical computations.

Metastability for nonlinear parabolic equations with application to scalar viscous conservation laws

The aim article is to contribute to the definition of a versatile language for metastability in the context of partial differential equations of evolutive type. A general framework suited for parabolic equations in one dimensional bounded domains is proposed, based on choosing a family of approximate steady states, and on the spectral properties of the linearized operators at such states. The slow motion for solutions belonging to a cylindrical neighborhood of the family of approximate steady states is analyzed by means of a system of an ODE for the parameter $ξ$ that describes the family, coupled with a PDE describing the evolution of the perturbation $v$. We state and prove a general result concerning the reduced system for the couple $(ξ,v)$, called quasi-linearized system, obtained by disregarding the nonlinear term in $v$, and we show how such approach suits to the prototypical example of scalar viscous conservation laws with Dirichlet boundary condition in a bounded one-dimensional interval with convex flux.

Slow motion for compressible isentropic Navier--Stokes equations

We consider the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for isentropic dynamics with real viscosity on a bounded interval. In the case of boundary data defining an admissible shock wave for the corresponding unviscous hyperbolic system, we determine a scalar differential equation describing the motion of the internal transition layer. In particular, for small viscosity, the velocity of the motion is exponentially small. The approach is based on the construction of a one-parameter manifold of approximate solutions and on an appropriate projection of the evolution of the complete Navier-Stokes system towards such manifold.
