Hospital management in the COVID-19 emergency: Abelian Sandpile paradigm and beyond

In this article, we propose a mathematical model -- based on a cellular automaton -- for the redistribution of patients within a network of hospitals with limited available resources, in order to reduce the risks of a local/global collapse of the healthcare system. We attempt at developing a conceptual tool to support making rational decisions relevant to the optimisation of the allocation of patients into accessible medical facilities. The strategy is based on a version of the Abelian Sandpile model for the Self-Organised Criticality, with the idea of testing the paradigm for the management of patients among the COVID-19 hospitals in Italian regions. In particular, we compare the novel proposal to the standard management of connections between hospitals, showing a number of advantages at a local and global level, by means of a reliable indicator function introduced for measuring the effectiveness of the allocation strategies.

Propagating Fronts for a Viscous Hamer-Type system

Motivated by radiation hydrodynamics, we analyse a 2x2 system consisting of a one-dimensional viscous conservation law with strictly convex flux -- the viscous Burgers' equation being a paradigmatic example -- coupled with an elliptic equation, named viscous Hamer-type system. In the regime of small viscosity and for large shocks, namely when the profile of the corresponding underlying inviscid model undergoes a discontinuity -- usually called sub-shock -- it is proved the existence of a smooth propagating front, regularising the jump of the corresponding inviscid equation. The proof is based on Geometric Singular Perturbation Theory (GSPT) as introduced in the pioneering work of Fenichel [5] and subsequently developed by Szmolyan [19]. In addition, the case of small shocks and large viscosity is also addressed via a standard bifurcation argument.

GPU-based parallel simulations of the Gatenby-Gawlinski model with anisotropic, heterogeneous acid diffusion

We introduce a variant of the Gatenby-Gawlinski model for acid-mediated tumor invasion, accounting for anisotropic and heterogeneous diffusion of the lactic acid across the surrounding healthy tissues. Numerical simulations are performed for two-dimensional data by employing finite volume schemes on staggered Cartesian grids, and parallel implementation through the modern CUDA GPUs technology is considered. The effectiveness of such approach is proven by reproducing biologically relevant results like the formation of propagating fronts and the emergence of an interstitial gap between normal and cancerous cells, which is driven by the pH lowering strategy and depends significantly on the diffusion rates. By means of a performance analysis of the serial and parallel execution protocols, we infer that exploiting highly parallel GPU-based computing devices allows to rehabilitate finite volume schemes on regularly-shaped meshes, together with explicit time discretization, for complex applications to interface diffusion problems of invasive processes.

Analysis of a Mogi-type model describing surface deformations induced by a magma chamber embedded in an elastic half-space

Motivated by a vulcanological problem, we establish a sound mathematical approach for surface deformation effects generated by a magma chamber embedded into Earth's interior and exerting on it a uniform hydrostatic pressure. Modeling assumptions translate the problem into classical elasto-static system (homogeneous and isotropic) in an half-space with an embedded cavity. The boundary conditions are traction-free for the air/crust boundary and uniformly hydrostatic for the crust/chamber boundary. These are complemented with zero-displacement condition at infinity (with decay rate). After a short presentation of the model and of its geophysical interest, we establish the well-posedness of the problem and provide an appropriate integral formulation for its solution for cavity with general shape. Based on that, assuming that the chamber is centred at some fixed point $\bm{z}$ and has diameter $\varepsilon>0$, small with respect to the depth $d$, we derive rigorously the principal term in the asymptotic expansion for the surface deformation as $\varepsilon=r/d\to 0^+$. Such formula provides a rigorous proof of the Mogi point source model in the case of spherical cavities generalizing it to the case of cavities of arbitrary shape.

Assessment of Predictor-Corrector strategy for the Burridge-Knopoff model

A Predictor-Corrector strategy is employed for the numerical simulation of the one-dimensional Burridge-Knopoff model of earthquakes. This approach is totally explicit and allows to reproduce the main features of the model. The results achieved are compared with those of several previous works available in the literature, in order to state the effectiveness of the novel numerical strategy. Simulations are performed starting from the simplest cases and are aimed at studying the qualitative trends of the phenomena under analysis. By increasing the size of the associated differential system, it is possible to examine data on the basis of the Gutenberg-Richter statistical law. Finally, some tests are conducted to investigate the continuum limit of the discrete Burridge-Knopoff model towards a macroscopic dynamics.

Asymptotic Expansion for Harmonic Functions in the Half-Space with a Pressurized Cavity

In this paper, we address a simplified version of a problem arising from volcanology. Specifically, as reduced form of the boundary value problem for the Lamé system, we consider a Neumann problem for harmonic functions in the half-space with a cavity $C$. Zero normal derivative is assumed at the boundary of the half-space; differently, at $\partial C$, the normal derivative of the function is required to be given by an external datum $g$, corresponding to a pressure term exerted on the medium at $\partial C$. Under the assumption that the (pressurized) cavity is small with respect to the distance from the boundary of the half-space, we establish an asymptotic formula for the solution of the problem. Main ingredients are integral equation formulations of the harmonic solution of the Neumann problem and a spectral analysis of the integral operators involved in the problem. In the special case of a datum $g$ which describes a constant pressure at $\partial C$, we recover a simplified representation based on a polarization tensor.

Metastability for nonlinear parabolic equations with application to scalar viscous conservation laws

The aim article is to contribute to the definition of a versatile language for metastability in the context of partial differential equations of evolutive type. A general framework suited for parabolic equations in one dimensional bounded domains is proposed, based on choosing a family of approximate steady states, and on the spectral properties of the linearized operators at such states. The slow motion for solutions belonging to a cylindrical neighborhood of the family of approximate steady states is analyzed by means of a system of an ODE for the parameter $ξ$ that describes the family, coupled with a PDE describing the evolution of the perturbation $v$. We state and prove a general result concerning the reduced system for the couple $(ξ,v)$, called quasi-linearized system, obtained by disregarding the nonlinear term in $v$, and we show how such approach suits to the prototypical example of scalar viscous conservation laws with Dirichlet boundary condition in a bounded one-dimensional interval with convex flux.

Slow motion for compressible isentropic Navier--Stokes equations

We consider the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for isentropic dynamics with real viscosity on a bounded interval. In the case of boundary data defining an admissible shock wave for the corresponding unviscous hyperbolic system, we determine a scalar differential equation describing the motion of the internal transition layer. In particular, for small viscosity, the velocity of the motion is exponentially small. The approach is based on the construction of a one-parameter manifold of approximate solutions and on an appropriate projection of the evolution of the complete Navier-Stokes system towards such manifold.

Velocity-jump processes with a finite number of speeds and their asymptotically parabolic nature

The paper examines a class of first order linear hyperbolic systems, proposed as a generalization of the Goldstein-Kac model for velocity-jump processes and determined by a finite number of speeds and corresponding transition rates. It is shown that the large-time behavior is described by a corresponding scalar diffusive equation of parabolic type, defined by a diffusion matrix for which an explicit formula is given. Such representation takes advantage of a variant of the Kirchoff's matrix tree Theorem applied to the graph associated to the system and given by considering the velocities as verteces and the transition rates as weights of the arcs.

Numerical exploration of a forward-backward diffusion equation

We analyze numerically a forward-backward diffusion equation with a cubic-like diffusion function, -emerging in the framework of phase transitions modeling- and its "entropy" formulation determined by considering it as the singular limit of a third-order pseudo-parabolic equation. Precisely, we propose schemes for both the second and the third order equations, we discuss the analytical properties of their semi-discrete counter-parts and we compare the numerical results in the case of initial data of Riemann type, showing strengths and flaws of the two approaches, the main emphasis being given to the propagation of transition interfaces.
