A stable approach to the equivariant Hopf theorem

Let G be a finite group. For semi-free G-manifolds which are oriented in the sense of Waner, the homotopy classes of G-equivariant maps into a G-sphere are described in terms of their degrees, and the degrees occurring are characterized in terms of congruences. This is first shown to be a stable problem and then solved using methods of equivariant stable homotopy theory with respect to a semi-free G-universe.

Bauer--Furuta invariants and Galois symmetries

The Bauer-Furuta invariants of smooth 4-manifolds are investigated from a functorial point of view. This leads to a definition of equivariant Bauer-Furuta invariants for compact Lie group actions. These are studied in Galois covering situations. We show that the ordinary invariants of all quotients are determined by the equivariant invariants of the covering manifold. In the case where the Bauer-Furuta invariants can be identified with the Seiberg-Witten invariants, this implies relations between the invariants in Galois covering situations, and these can be illustrated through elliptic surfaces. It is also explained that the equivariant Bauer--Furuta invariants potentially contain more information than the ordinary invariants.

Characteristic cohomotopy classes for families of 4-manifolds

Families of smooth closed oriented 4-manifolds with a complex spin structure are studied by means of a family version of the Bauer--Furuta invariants in the context of parametrised stable homotopy theory, leading to a definition of characteristic cohomotopy classes on Thom spectra associated to the classifying spaces of their complex spin diffeomorphism groups. This is illustrated with mapping tori of such diffeomorphisms and related to the equivariant invariants.

K3 spectra

The notion of a K3 spectrum is introduced in analogy with that of an elliptic spectrum and it is shown that there are "enough" K3 spectra in the sense that for all K3 surfaces X in a suitable moduli stack of K3 surfaces there is a K3 spectrum whose underlying ring is isomorphic to the local ring of the moduli stack in X with respect to the étale topology, and similarly for the ring of formal functions on the formal deformation space.

Stable diffeomorphism groups of 4-manifolds

A localisation of the category of n-manifolds is introduced by formally inverting the connected sum construction with a chosen n-manifold Y. On the level of automorphism groups, this leads to the stable diffeomorphism groups of n-manifolds. In dimensions 0 and 2, this is connected to the stable homotopy groups of spheres and the stable mapping class groups of Riemann surfaces. In dimension 4 there are many essentially different candidates for the n-manifold Y to choose from. It is shown that the Bauer--Furuta invariants provide invariants in the case Y = CP^2, which is related to the birational classification of complex surfaces. This will be the case for other Y only after localisation of the target category. In this context, it is shown that the K3-stable Bauer--Furuta invariants determine the S^2xS^2-stable invariants.

Commutative S-algebras of prime characteristics and applications to unoriented bordism

The notion of highly structured ring spectra of prime characteristic is made precise and is studied via the versal examples S//p for prime numbers p. These can be realized as Thom spectra, and therefore relate to other Thom spectra such as the unoriented bordism spectrum MO. We compute the Hochschild and André-Quillen invariants of the S//p. Among other applications, we show that S//p is not a commutative algebra over the Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum HF_p, although the converse is clearly true, and that MO is not a polynomial algebra over S//2.

Drinfeld centers for bicategories

We generalize Drinfeld's notion of the center of a tensor category to bicategories. In this generality, we present a spectral sequence to compute the basic invariants of Drinfeld centers: the abelian monoid of isomorphism classes of objects, and the abelian automorphism group of its identity object. There is an associated obstruction theory that explains the difference between the Drinfeld center and the center of the classifying category. For examples, we discuss bicategories of groups and bands, rings and bimodules, as well as fusion categories.

Twisted homological stability for extensions and automorphism groups of free nilpotent groups

We prove twisted homological stability with polynomial coefficients for automorphism groups of free nilpotent groups of any given class. These groups interpolate between two extremes for which homological stability was known before, the general linear groups over the integers and the automorphism groups of free groups. The proof presented here uses a general result that applies to arbitrary extensions of groups, and that has other applications as well.

Brauer spaces for commutative rings and structured ring spectra

Using an analogy between the Brauer groups in algebra and the Whitehead groups in topology, we first use methods of algebraic K-theory to give a natural definition of Brauer spectra for commutative rings, such that their homotopy groups are given by the Brauer group, the Picard group and the group of units. Then, in the context of structured ring spectra, the same idea leads to two-fold non-connected deloopings of the spectra of units.

Homotopies and the universal fixed point property

A topological space has the fixed point property if every continuous self-map of that space has at least one fixed point. We demonstrate that there are serious restraints imposed by the requirement that there be a choice of fixed points that is continuous whenever the self-map varies continuously. To even specify the problem, we introduce the universal fixed point property. Our results apply in particular to the analysis of convex subspaces of Banach spaces, to the topology of finite-dimensional manifolds and CW complexes, and to the combinatorics of Kolmogorov spaces associated with finite posets.

Brauer groups for commutative $S$-algebras

We investigate a notion of Azumaya algebras in the context of structured ring spectra and give a definition of Brauer groups. We investigate their Galois theoretic properties, and discuss examples of Azumaya algebras arising from Galois descent and cyclic algebras. We construct examples that are related to topological Hochschild cohomology of group ring spectra and we present a K(n)-local variant of the notion of Brauer groups.

Brave new local moduli for ordinary K3 surfaces

It is shown that the K3 spectra which refine the local rings of the moduli stack of ordinary p-primitively polarized K3 surfaces in characteristic p allow for an Eoo structure which is unique up to equivalence. This uses the Eoo obstruction theory of Goerss and Hopkins and the description of the deformation theory of such K3 surfaces in terms of their Hodge F-crystals due to Deligne and Illusie. Furthermore, all automorphism of such K3 surfaces can be realized by Eoo maps which are unique up to homotopy, and this can by rigidified to an action if the automorphism group is tame.

Equivariant stable stems for prime order groups

For groups of prime order, equivariant stable maps between equivariant representation spheres are investigated using the Borel cohomology Adams spectral sequence. Features of the equivariant stable homotopy category, such as stability and duality, are shown to lift to the category of modules over the associated Steenrod algebra. The dependence on the dimension functions of the representations is clarified.
