Hochschild cohomology of symmetric groups and generating functions,II

We relate the generating functions of the dimensions of the Hochschild cohomology in any fixed degree of the symmetric groups with those of blocks of the symmetric groups. We show that the first Hochschild cohomology of a positive defect block of a symmetric group is non-zero, answering in the affirmative a question of the third author. To do this, we prove a formula expressing the dimension of degree one Hochschild cohomology as a sum of dimensions of centres of blocks of smaller symmetric groups. This in turn is a consequence of a general formula that makes more precise a theorem of our previous paper describing the generating functions for the dimensions of Hochschild cohomology of symmetric groups.

Structure of blocks with normal defect and abelian $p'$ inertial quotient

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic $p$. Let $kGe$ be a block of a group algebra of a finite group $G$, with normal defect group $P$ and abelian $p'$ inertial quotient $L$. Then we show that $kGe$ is a matrix algebra over a quantised version of the group algebra of a semidirect product of $P$ with a certain subgroup of $L$. To do this, we first examine the associated graded algebra, using a Jennings--Quillen style theorem. As an example, we calculate the associated graded of the basic algebra of the non-principal block in the case of a semidirect product of an extraspecial $p$-group $P$ of exponent $p$ and order $p^3$ with a quaternion group of order eight with the centre acting trivially. In the case $p=3$ we give explicit generators and relations for the basic algebra as a quantised version of $kP$. As a second example, we give explicit generators and relations in the case of a group of shape $2^{1+4}:3^{1+2}$ in characteristic two.

On abelian subcategories of triangulated categories

The stable module category of a selfinjective algebra is triangulated, but need not have any nontrivial $t$-structures, and in particular, full abelian subcategories need not arise as hearts of a $t$-structure. The purpose of this paper is to investigate full abelian subcategories of triangulated categories whose exact structures are related, and more precisely, to explore relations between invariants of finite-dimensional selfinjective algebras and full abelian subcategories of their stable module categories.

Linear source invertible bimodules and Green correspondence

We show that the Green correspondence induces an injective group homomorphism from the linear source Picard group $\mathcal{L}(B)$ of a block $B$ of a finite group algebra to the linear source Picard group $\mathcal{L}(C)$, where $C$ is the Brauer correspondent of $B$. This homomorphism maps the trivial source Picard group $\mathcal{T}(B)$ to the trivial source Picard group $\mathcal{T}(C)$. We show further that the endopermutation source Picard group $\mathcal{E}(B)$ is bounded in terms of the defect groups of $B$ and that when $B$ has a normal defect group $\mathcal{E}(B)=\mathcal{L}(B)$. Finally we prove that the rank of any invertible $B$-bimodule is bounded by that of $B$.

Block algebras with HH1 a simple Lie algebra

We show that if $B$ is a block of a finite group algebra $kG$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of prime characteristic $p$ such that $\HH^1(B)$ is a simple Lie algebra and such that $B$ has a unique isomorphism class of simple modules, then $B$ is nilpotent with an elementary abelian defect group $P$ of order at least $3$, and $\HH^1(B)$ is in that case isomorphic to the Jacobson-Witt algebra $\HH^1(kP)$. In particular, no other simple modular Lie algebras arise as $\HH^1(B)$ of a block $B$ with a single isomorphism class of simple modules.

On automorphisms and focal subgroups of blocks

Given a p-block B of a finite group with defect group P and fusion system F on P we show that the rank of the group P/foc(F) is invariant under stable equivalences of Morita type. The main ingredients are the star-construction, due to Broue and Puig, a theorem of Weiss on linear source modules, arguments of Hertweck and Kimmerle applying Weiss' theorem to blocks, and connections with integrable derivations in the Hochschild cohomology of block algebras.

On blocks of defect two and one simple module, and Lie algebra structure of $HH^1$

Let $k$ be a field of odd prime characteristic $p$. We calculate the Lie algebra structure of the first Hochschild cohomology of a class of quantum complete intersections over $k$. As a consequence, we prove that if $B$ is a defect $2$-block of a finite group algebra $kG$ whose Brauer correspondent $C$ has a unique isomorphism class of simple modules, then a basic algebra of $B$ is a local algebra which can be generated by at most $2\sqrt I$ elements, where $I$ is the inertial index of $B$, and where we assume that $k$ is a splitting field for $B$ and $C$.

Anchors of irreducible characters

Given a prime number $p$, every irreducible character $χ$ of a finite group $G$ determines a unique conjugacy class of $p$-subgroups of $G$ which we will call the anchors of $χ$. This invariant has been considered by L. Barker in the context of finite $p$-solvable groups. Besides proving some basic properties of these anchors, we investigate the relation to other $p$-groups which can be attached to irreducible characters, such as defect groups, vertices in the sense of J. A. Green and vertices in the sense of G. Navarro.

Integrable derivations and stable equivalences of Morita type

Using that integrable derivations of symmetric algebras can be interpreted in terms of Bockstein homomorphisms in Hochschild cohomology, we show that integrable derivations are invariant under the transfer maps in Hochschild cohomology of symmetric algebras induced by stable equivalences of Morita type. With applications in block theory in mind, we allow complete discrete valuation rings of unequal characteristic.

On equivalences for cohomological Mackey functors

By results of Rognerud, a source algebra equivalence between two $p$-blocks of finite groups induces an equivalence between the categories of cohomological Mackey functors associated with these blocks, and a splendid derived equivalence between two blocks induces a derived equivalence between the corresponding categories of cohomological Mackey functors. We prove this by giving an intrinsic description of cohomological Mackey functors of a block in terms of the source algebras of the block, and then using this description to construct explicit two-sided tilting complexes realising the above mentioned derived equivalence. We show further that a splendid stable equivalence of Morita type between two blocks induces an equivalence between the categories of cohomological Mackey functors which vanish at the trivial group. We observe that the module categories of a block, the category of cohomological Mackey functors, and the category of cohomological Mackey functors which vanish at the trivial group arise in an idempotent recollement. Finally, we extend a result of Tambara on the finitistic dimension of cohomological Mackey functors to blocks.

On the Brauer indecomposability of Scott modules

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic $p$, and let $P$ be a $p$-subgroup of a finite group $G$. We give sufficient conditions for the $kG$-Scott module $\mathrm{Sc}(G,P)$ with vertex $P$ to remain indcomposable under the Brauer construction with respect to any subgroup of $P$. This generalizes similar results for the case where $P$ is abelian. The background motivation for this note is the fact that the Brauer indecomposability of a $p$-permutation bimodule is a key step towards showing that the module under consideration induces a stable equivalence of Morita type, which then may possibly be lifted to a derived equivalence.

A characterisation of nilpotent blocks

Let $B$ be a $p$-block of a finite group, and set $m=$ $\sum χ(1)^2$, the sum taken over all height zero characters of $B$. Motivated by a result of M. Isaacs characterising $p$-nilpotent finite groups in terms of character degrees, we show that $B$ is nilpotent if and only if the exact power of $p$ dividing $m$ is equal to the $p$-part of $|G:P|^2|P:R|$, where $P$ is a defect group of $B$ and where $R$ is the focal subgroup of $P$ with respect to a fusion system $\CF$ of $B$ on $P$. The proof involves the hyperfocal subalgebra $D$ of a source algebra of $B$. We conjecture that all ordinary irreducible characters of $D$ have degree prime to $p$ if and only if the $\CF$-hyperfocal subgroup of $P$ is abelian.

On stable equivalences with endopermutation source

We show that a bimodule between block algebras which has a fusion stable endopermutation module as a source and which induces Morita equivalences between centralisers of nontrivial subgroups of a defect group induces a stable equivalence of Morita type; this is a converse to a theorem of Puig. The special case where the source is trivial has long been known by many authors. The earliest instance for a result deducing a stable equivalence of Morita type from local Morita equivalences with possibly nontrivial endopermutation source is due to Puig, in the context of blocks with abelian defect groups with a Frobenius inertial quotient. The present note is motivated by an application, due to Biland, to blocks of finite groups with structural properties known to hold for hypothetical minimal counterexamples to the $Z_p^*$-Theorem.

On symmetric quotients of symmetric algebras

We investigate symmetric quotient algebras of symmetric algebras, with an emphasis on finite group algebras over a complete discrete valuation ring ${\mathcal O}$. Using elementary methods, we show that if an ordinary irreducible character $χ$ of a finite group $G$ gives rise to a symmetric quotient over ${\mathcal O}$ which is not a matrix algebra, then the decomposition numbers of the row labelled by $χ$ are all divisible by the characteristic $p$ of the residue field of ${\mathcal O}$.
