A monotone convergence theorem for strong Feller semigroups

For an increasing sequence $(T_n)$ of one-parameter semigroups of sub Markovian kernel operators over a Polish space, we study the limit semigroup and prove sufficient conditions for it to be strongly Feller. In particular, we show that the strong Feller property carries over from the approximating semigroups to the limit semigroup if the resolvent of the latter maps the constant 1 function to a continuous function. This is instrumental in the study of elliptic operators on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with unbounded coefficients: our abstract result enables us to assign a semigroup to such an operator and to show that the semigroup is strongly Feller under very mild regularity assumptions on the coefficients. We also provide counterexamples to demonstrate that the assumptions in our main result are close to optimal.

General Kernel estimates of Schrödinger type operators with unbounded diffusion terms

We prove first that the realization $A_{\min}$ of $A:=\mathrm{div}(Q\nabla)-V$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ with unbounded coefficients generates a symmetric sub-Markovian and ultracontractive semigroup on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ which coincides on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)\cap C_b(\mathbb{R}^d)$ with the minimal semigroup generated by a realization of $A$ on $C_b(\mathbb{R}^d)$. Moreover, using time dependent Lyapunov functions, we prove pointwise upper bounds for the heat kernel of $A$ and deduce some spectral properties of $A_{\min}$ in the case of polynomially and exponentially diffusion and potential coefficients.

A Pettis-Type Integral and Applications to Transition Semigroups

Motivated by applications to transition semigroups, we introduce the notion of a norming dual pair and study a Pettis-type integral on such pairs. In particular, we establish a sufficient condition for integrability. We also introduce and study a class of semigroups on such dual pairs which are an abstract version of transition semigroups. Using our results, we give conditions ensuring that a semigroup consisting of kernel operators has a Laplace transform which also consists of kernel operators. We also provide conditions under which a semigroup is uniquely determined by its Laplace transform.

On the lattice structure of weakly continuous operators on the space of measures

Consider the lattice of bounded linear operators on the space of Borel measures on a Polish space. We prove that the operators which are continuous with respect to the weak topology induced by the bounded measurable functions form a sublattice that is lattice isomorphic to the space of transition kernels. As an application we present a purely analytic proof of Doob's theorem concerning stability of transition semigroups.

Rotating, stationary, axially symmetric spacetimes with collisionless matter

The existence of stationary solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov system which are axially symmetric and have non-zero total angular momentum is shown. This provides mathematical models for rotating, general relativistic and asymptotically flat non-vacuum spacetimes. If angular momentum is allowed to be non-zero, the system of equations to solve contains one semilinear elliptic equation which is singular on the axis of rotation. This can be handled very efficiently by recasting the equation as one for an axisymmetric unknown on $\R^5$.

Approximating the coefficients in semilinear stochastic partial differential equations

We investigate, in the setting of UMD Banach spaces E, the continuous dependence on the data A, F, G and X_0 of mild solutions of semilinear stochastic evolution equations with multiplicative noise of the form dX(t) = [AX(t) + F(t,X(t))]dt + G(t,X(t))dW_H(t), X(0)=X_0, where W_H is a cylindrical Brownian motion on a Hilbert space H. We prove continuous dependence of the compensated solutions X(t)-e^{tA}X_0 in the norms L^p(Ω;C^λ([0,T];E)) assuming that the approximating operators A_n are uniformly sectorial and converge to A in the strong resolvent sense, and that the approximating nonlinearities F_n and G_n are uniformly Lipschitz continuous in suitable norms and converge to F and G pointwise. Our results are applied to a class of semilinear parabolic SPDEs with finite-dimensional multiplicative noise.

Continuity and Equicontinuity of Transition Semigroups

We study continuity and equicontinuity of semigroups on norming dual pairs with respect to topologies defined in terms of the duality. In particular, we address the question whether continuity of a semigroup already implies (local/quasi) equicontinuity. We apply our results to transition semigroups and show that, under suitable hypothesis on $E$, every transition semigroup on $C_b(E)$ which is continuous with respect to the strict topology $β_0$ is automatically quasi-equicontinuous with respect to that topology. We also give several characterizations of $β_0$-continuous semigroups on $C_b(E)$ and provide a convenient condition for the transition semigroup of a Banach space valued Markov process to be $β_0$-continuous.

Gravitational collapse and the formation of black holes for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system

We review results on the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat Einstein-Vlasov system. We focus on a recent result where we found explicit conditions on the initial data which guarantee the formation of a black hole in the evolution. Among these data there are data such that the corresponding solutions exist globally in Schwarzschild coordinates. We put these results into a more general context, and we include arguments which show that the spacetimes we obtain satisfy the weak cosmic censorship conjecture and contain a black hole in the sense of suitable mathematical definitions of these concepts which are available in the literature.

The formation of black holes in spherically symmetric gravitational collapse

We consider the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat Einstein-Vlasov system. We find explicit conditions on the initial data, with ADM mass M, such that the resulting spacetime has the following properties: there is a family of radially outgoing null geodesics where the area radius r along each geodesic is bounded by 2M, the timelike lines $r=c\in [0,2M]$ are incomplete, and for r>2M the metric converges asymptotically to the Schwarzschild metric with mass M. The initial data that we construct guarantee the formation of a black hole in the evolution. We also give examples of such initial data with the additional property that the solutions exist for all $r\geq 0$ and all Schwarzschild time, i.e., we obtain global existence in Schwarzschild coordinates in situations where the initial data are not small. Some of our results are also established for the Einstein equations coupled to a general matter model characterized by conditions on the matter quantities.

Global existence for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system with outgoing matter

We prove a new global existence result for the asymptotically flat, spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system which describes in the framework of general relativity an ensemble of particles which interact by gravity. The data are such that initially all the particles are moving radially outward and that this property can be bootstrapped. The resulting non-vacuum spacetime is future geodesically complete.

The Vlasov-Poisson system with radiation damping

We set up and analyze a model of radiation damping within the framework of continuum mechanics, inspired by a model of post-Newtonian hydrodynamics due to Blanchet, Damour and Schaefer. In order to simplify the problem as much as possible we replace the gravitational field by the electromagnetic field and the fluid by kinetic theory. We prove that the resulting system has a well-posed Cauchy problem globally in time for general initial data and in all solutions the fields decay to zero at late times. In particular, this means that the model is free from the runaway solutions which frequently occur in descriptions of radiation reaction.
