Regularity results for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system

The spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system is considered in Schwarzschild coordinates and in maximal-isotropic coordinates. An open problem is the issue of global existence for initial data without size restrictions. The main purpose of the present work is to propose a method of approach for general initial data, which improves the regularity of the terms that need to be estimated compared to previous methods. We prove that global existence holds outside the centre in both these coordinate systems. In the Schwarzschild case we improve the bound on the momentum support obtained in \cite{RRS} for compact initial data. The improvement implies that we can admit non-compact data with both ingoing and outgoing matter. This extends one of the results in \cite{AR1}. In particular our method avoids the difficult task of treating the pointwise matter terms. Furthermore, we show that singularities never form in Schwarzschild time for ingoing matter as long as $3m\leq r.$ This removes an additional assumption made in \cite{A1}. Our result in maximal-isotropic coordinates is analogous to the result in \cite{R1}, but our method is different and it improves the regularity of the terms that need to be estimated for proving global existence in general.

A numerical investigation of the steady states of the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov-Maxwell system

We construct, by numerical means, static solutions of the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov-Maxwell system and investigate various features of the solutions. This extends a previous investigation \cite{AR1} of the chargeless case. We study the possible shapes of the energy density profile as a function of the area radius when the electric charge of an individual particle is varied as a parameter. We find profiles which are multi-peaked, where the peaks are separated either by vacuum or a thin atmosphere, and we find that for a sufficiently large charge parameter there are no physically meaningful solutions. Furthermore, we investigate if the inequality \sqrt{M}\leq \frac{\sqrt{R}}{3}+\sqrt{\frac{R}{9}+\frac{Q^2}{3R}}, derived in \cite{An2}, is sharp within the class of solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov-Maxwell system. Here M is the ADM mass, Q the charge, and R the area radius of the boundary of the static object. We find two classes of solutions with this property, while there is only one in the chargeless case. In particular we find numerical evidence for the existence of arbitrarily thin shell solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov-Maxwell system. Finally, we consider one parameter families of steady states, and we find spirals in the mass-radius diagram for all examples of the microscopic equation of state which we consider.

Formation of trapped surfaces for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system

We consider the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat, non-vacuum Einstein equations, using as matter model a collisionless gas as described by the Vlasov equation. We find explicit conditions on the initial data which guarantee the formation of a trapped surface in the evolution which in particular implies that weak cosmic censorship holds for these data. We also analyze the evolution of solutions after a trapped surface has formed and we show that the event horizon is future complete. Furthermore we find that the apparent horizon and the event horizon do not coincide. This behavior is analogous to what is found in certain Vaidya spacetimes. The analysis is carried out in Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates.

The asymptotic behaviour in Schwarzschild time of Vlasov matter in spherically symmetric gravitational collapse

Given a static Schwarzschild spacetime of ADM mass M, it is well-known that no ingoing causal geodesic starting in the outer domain r>2M will cross the event horizon r=2M in finite Schwarzschild time. In the present paper we show that in gravitational collapse of Vlasov matter this behaviour can be very different. We construct initial data for which a black hole forms and all matter crosses the event horizon as Schwarzschild time goes to infinity, and we show that this is a necessary condition for geodesic completeness of the event horizon. In addition to a careful analysis of the asymptotic behaviour of the matter characteristics our proof requires a new argument for global existence of solutions to the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system in an outer domain, since our initial data have non-compact support in the radial momentum variable and previous methods break down.

Gravitational collapse and the formation of black holes for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system

We review results on the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat Einstein-Vlasov system. We focus on a recent result where we found explicit conditions on the initial data which guarantee the formation of a black hole in the evolution. Among these data there are data such that the corresponding solutions exist globally in Schwarzschild coordinates. We put these results into a more general context, and we include arguments which show that the spacetimes we obtain satisfy the weak cosmic censorship conjecture and contain a black hole in the sense of suitable mathematical definitions of these concepts which are available in the literature.

Sharp bounds on the critical stability radius for relativistic charged spheres

In a recent paper by Giuliani and Rothman \cite{GR}, the problem of finding a lower bound on the radius $R$ of a charged sphere with mass M and charge Q<M is addressed. Such a bound is referred to as the critical stability radius. Equivalently, it can be formulated as the problem of finding an upper bound on M for given radius and charge. This problem has resulted in a number of papers in recent years but neither a transparent nor a general inequality similar to the case without charge, i.e., M\leq 4R/9, has been found. In this paper we derive the surprisingly transparent inequality $$\sqrt{M}\leq\frac{\sqrt{R}}{3}+\sqrt{\frac{R}{9}+\frac{Q^2}{3R}}.$$ The inequality is shown to hold for any solution which satisfies $p+2p_T\leqρ,$ where $p\geq 0$ and $p_T$ are the radial- and tangential pressures respectively and $ρ\geq 0$ is the energy density. In addition we show that the inequality is sharp, in particular we show that sharpness is attained by infinitely thin shell solutions.

The formation of black holes in spherically symmetric gravitational collapse

We consider the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat Einstein-Vlasov system. We find explicit conditions on the initial data, with ADM mass M, such that the resulting spacetime has the following properties: there is a family of radially outgoing null geodesics where the area radius r along each geodesic is bounded by 2M, the timelike lines $r=c\in [0,2M]$ are incomplete, and for r>2M the metric converges asymptotically to the Schwarzschild metric with mass M. The initial data that we construct guarantee the formation of a black hole in the evolution. We also give examples of such initial data with the additional property that the solutions exist for all $r\geq 0$ and all Schwarzschild time, i.e., we obtain global existence in Schwarzschild coordinates in situations where the initial data are not small. Some of our results are also established for the Einstein equations coupled to a general matter model characterized by conditions on the matter quantities.

Sharp bounds on $2m/r$ of general spherically symmetric static objects

In 1959 Buchdahl \cite{Bu} obtained the inequality $2M/R\leq 8/9$ under the assumptions that the energy density is non-increasing outwards and that the pressure is isotropic. Here $M$ is the ADM mass and $R$ the area radius of the boundary of the static body. The assumptions used to derive the Buchdahl inequality are very restrictive and e.g. neither of them hold in a simple soap bubble. In this work we remove both of these assumptions and consider \textit{any} static solution of the spherically symmetric Einstein equations for which the energy density $ρ\geq 0,$ and the radial- and tangential pressures $p\geq 0$ and $p_T,$ satisfy $p+2p_T\leqΩρ, Ω>0,$ and we show that $$\sup_{r>0}\frac{2m(r)}{r}\leq \frac{(1+2Ω)^2-1}{(1+2Ω)^2},$$ where $m$ is the quasi-local mass, so that in particular $M=m(R).$ We also show that the inequality is sharp. Note that when $Ω=1$ the original bound by Buchdahl is recovered. The assumptions on the matter model are very general and in particular any model with $p\geq 0$ which satisfies the dominant energy condition satisfies the hypotheses with $Ω=3.$

Global existence for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system with outgoing matter

We prove a new global existence result for the asymptotically flat, spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system which describes in the framework of general relativity an ensemble of particles which interact by gravity. The data are such that initially all the particles are moving radially outward and that this property can be bootstrapped. The resulting non-vacuum spacetime is future geodesically complete.

On static shells and the Buchdahl inequality for the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system

In a previous work \cite{An1} matter models such that the energy density $ρ\geq 0,$ and the radial- and tangential pressures $p\geq 0$ and $q,$ satisfy $p+q\leqΩρ, Ω\geq 1,$ were considered in the context of Buchdahl's inequality. It was proved that static shell solutions of the spherically symmetric Einstein equations obey a Buchdahl type inequality whenever the support of the shell, $[R_0,R_1], R_0>0,$ satisfies $R_1/R_0<1/4.$ Moreover, given a sequence of solutions such that $R_1/R_0\to 1,$ then the limit supremum of $2M/R_1$ was shown to be bounded by $((2Ω+1)^2-1)/(2Ω+1)^2.$ In this paper we show that the hypothesis that $R_1/R_0\to 1,$ can be realized for Vlasov matter, by constructing a sequence of static shells of the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system with this property. We also prove that for this sequence not only the limit supremum of $2M/R_1$ is bounded, but that the limit is $((2Ω+1)^2-1)/(2Ω+1)^2=8/9,$ since $Ω=1$ for Vlasov matter. Thus, static shells of Vlasov matter can have $2M/R_1$ arbitrary close to $8/9,$ which is interesting in view of \cite{AR2}, where numerical evidence is presented that 8/9 is an upper bound of $2M/R_1$ of any static solution of the spherically symmetric Einstein-Vlasov system.

On the Buchdahl inequality for spherically symmetric static shells

A classical result by Buchdahl \cite{Bu1} shows that for static solutions of the spherically symmetric Einstein-matter system, the total ADM mass M and the area radius R of the boundary of the body, obey the inequality $2M/R\leq 8/9.$ The proof of this inequality rests on the hypotheses that the energy density is non-increasing outwards and that the pressure is isotropic. In this work neither of Buchdahl's hypotheses are assumed. We consider non-isotropic spherically symmetric shells, supported in $[R_0,R_1], R_0>0,$ of matter models for which the energy density $ρ\geq 0,$ and the radial- and tangential pressures $p\geq 0$ and $q,$ satisfy $p+q\leqΩρ, Ω\geq 1.$ We show a Buchdahl type inequality for shells which are thin; given an $ε<1/4$ there is a $κ>0$ such that $2M/R_1\leq 1-κ$ when $R_1/R_0\leq 1+ε.$ It is also shown that for a sequence of solutions such that $R_1/R_0\to 1,$ the limit supremum of $2M/R_1$ of the sequence is bounded by $((2Ω+1)^2-1)/(2Ω+1)^2.$ In particular if $Ω=1,$ which is the case for Vlasov matter, the boumd is $8/9.$ The latter result is motivated by numerical simulations \cite{AR2} which indicate that for non-isotropic shells of Vlasov matter $2M/R_1\leq 8/9,$ and moreover, that the value 8/9 is approached for shells with $R_1/R_0\to 1$. In \cite{An2} a sequence of shells of Vlasov matter is constructed with the properties that $R_1/R_0\to 1,$ and that $2M/R_1$ equals 8/9 in the limit. We emphasize that in the present paper no field equations for the matter are used, whereas in \cite{An2} the Vlasov equation is important.

The Einstein-Vlasov system/Kinetic theory

The main purpose of this article is to provide a guide to theorems on global properties of solutions to the Einstein-Vlasov system. This system couples Einstein's equations to a kinetic matter model. Kinetic theory has been an important field of research during several decades in which the main focus has been on nonrelativistic and special relativistic physics, {\it i.e.} to model the dynamics of neutral gases, plasmas, and Newtonian self-gravitating systems. In 1990, Rendall and Rein initiated a mathematical study of the Einstein-Vlasov system. Since then many theorems on global properties of solutions to this system have been established. The Vlasov equation describes matter phenomenologically and it should be stressed that most of the theorems presented in this article are not presently known for other such matter models ({\it i.e.} fluid models). This paper gives introductions to kinetic theory in non-curved spacetimes and then the Einstein-Vlasov system is introduced. We believe that a good understanding of kinetic theory in non-curved spacetimes is fundamental to good comprehension of kinetic theory in general relativity.

On Blowup for Gain-Term-Only classical and relativistic Boltzmann equations

We show that deletion of the loss part of the collision term in all physically relevant versions of the Boltzmann equation, including the relativistic case, will in general lead to blowup in finite time of a solution and hence prevent global existence. Our result corrects an error in the proof given in Ref. [12], where the result was announced for the classical hard sphere case; here we give a simpler proof which applies much more generally.

On the Einstein-Vlasov system with hyperbolic symmetry

It is shown that a spacetime with collisionless matter evolving from data on a compact Cauchy surface with hyperbolic symmetry can be globally covered by compact hypersurfaces on which the mean curvature is constant and by compact hypersurfaces on which the area radius is constant. Results for the related cases of spherical and plane symmetry are reviewed and extended. The prospects of using the global time coordinates obtained in this way to investigate the global geometry of the spacetimes concerned are discussed.
