QED effects on the nuclear magnetic shielding of $^3$He

The leading quantum electrodynamic corrections to the nuclear magnetic shielding in one- and two-electron atomic systems are obtained in a complete form, and the shielding constants of $^1$H, $^3$He$^+$, and $^3$He are calculated to be $17.735\,436(3) \cdot 10^{-6}$, $35.507\,434(9)\cdot 10^{-6}$, and $59.967\,029(23)\cdot 10^{-6}$, respectively. These results are orders of magnitude more accurate than previous ones, and, with the ongoing measurement of the nuclear magnetic moment of $^3$He$^+$ and planned $^3$He$^{2+}$, they open the window for high-precision absolute magnetometry using $^3$He NMR probes. The presented theoretical approach is applicable to all other light atomic and molecular systems, which facilitates the improved determination of magnetic moments of any light nuclei.

Hyperfine structure in the HD molecule

We investigate interactions between the proton spin, the deuteron spin, and the orbital angular momentum in the electronic ground state of the HD molecule. These interactions lead to hyperfine splittings of molecular energy levels. Our numerical results for the first rotational level agree well with the currently most accurate measurement performed by Ramsey {\em et al.} in the 1950s. Knowledge of the hyperfine structure of other levels is necessary for the accurate determination of rovibrational transition energies in spectroscopic measurements. We present theoretical predictions and share the numerical code used to perform numerical calculations. This work sets the ground for high precision spectroscopic tests of hyperfine interactions in molecular systems. In particular we determine the value of the deuteron quadrupole moment $Q = 0.2856(2)$ fm$^2$ and give outlook for improving its accuracy by three orders of magnitude.

Hyperfine structure of the first rotational level in H$_2$, D$_2$ and HD molecules and the deuteron quadrupole moment

We perform the four-body calculation of the hyperfine structure in the first rotational state $J=1$ of the H$_2$, D$_2$, and HD molecules and determine the accurate value for the deuteron electric quadrupole moment $Q_d = 0.285\,699(15)(18)$ fm$^2$ in significant disagreement with former spectroscopic determinations. Our results for the hyperfine parameters agree very well with the currently most accurate molecular-beam magnetic resonance measurement performed several decades ago by N.F. Ramsey and coworkers. They also indicate the significance of previously neglected nonadiabatic effects. Moreover, a very good agreement with the recent calculation of $Q_d$ based on the chiral effective field theory, although much less accurate, indicates the importance of the spin dependence of nucleon interactions in the accurate description of nuclei.

QED calculation of ionization energies of $1snd$ states in helium

Quantum electrodynamical (QED) calculations of ionization energies of the $1snd\,D$ states are performed for the helium atom. We reproduce the previously known relativistic and QED effects up to order $mα^5$ and extend the theory by calculating the complete $mα^6$ correction. The total contribution of the $mα^6$ effects is shown to be much smaller than previously estimated, due to a large cancelation between the radiative and non-radiative parts of this correction. As a result of our calculations, we confirm the previously reported deviations between measured transition energies and theoretical predictions for the $nD$--$2S$ and $nD$--$2P$ transitions. Possible reasons for this discrepancy are analyzed.

QED calculation of the dipole polarizability of helium atom

The QED contribution to the dipole polarizability of the $^4$He atom was computed, including the effect of finite nuclear mass. The computationally most challenging contribution of the second electric-field derivative of the Bethe logarithm was obtained using two different methods: the integral representation method of Schwartz and the sum-over-states approach of Goldman and Drake. The results of both calculations are consistent, although the former method turned out to be much more accurate. The obtained value of the electric-field derivative of the Bethe logarithm, equal to $0.048\,557\,2(14)$ in atomic units, confirms the small magnitude of this quantity found in the only previous calculation [G. Łach, B. Jeziorski, and K. Szalewicz, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 233001 (2004)], but differs from it by about 5\%. The origin of this difference is explained. The total QED correction of the order of α 3 in the fine-structure constant α amounts to 30.6671(1)$\cdot 10^{-6}$, including the 0.1822$\cdot 10^{-6}$ contribution from the electric-field derivative of the Bethe logarithm and the 0.01112(1)$\cdot 10^{-6}$ correction for the finite nuclear mass, with all values in atomic units. The resulting theoretical value of the molar polarizability of helium-4 is $0.517\,254\,08(5)\,$cm$^3$/mol with the error estimate dominated by the uncertainty of the QED corrections of order $α^4$ and higher. Our value is in agreement with but an order of magnitude more accurate than the result $0.517\, 254\, 4(10)\,$cm$^3$/mol of the most recent experimental determination [C. Gaiser and B. Fellmuth, Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 123203 (2018)].

Rovibrational energy levels of the hydrogen molecule through nonadiabatic perturbation theory

We present an accurate theoretical determination of rovibrational energy levels of the hydrogen molecule and its isotopologues in its electronic ground state. We consider all significant corrections to the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, obtained within nonadiabatic perturbation theory, including the mixed nonadiabatic-relativistic effects. Quantum electrodynamic corrections in the leading $α^5\,m$ and the next-to-leading $α^6\,m$ orders, as well as finite nuclear size effect, are also taken into account but within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation only. Final results for the transition wavelength between rovibrational levels achieve accuracy of the order of $10^{-3}$--$10^{-7}$ cm$^{-1}$, and are provided by simple to use computer code.

Deuteron and triton magnetic moments from NMR spectra of the hydrogen molecule

We present a theory and calculations of the nuclear magnetic shielding with finite nuclear mass effects and determine magnetic moments of deuteron and triton using the known NMR spectra of HD and HT molecules. The results $μ_d = 0.857\,438\,234\,6(53)\;μ_N$ and $μ_t = 2.978\,962\,471(10)\;μ_N$ are more accurate and in a good agreement with the currently accepted values.

Explicitly correlated wave function for a boron atom

We present results of high-precision calculations for a boron atom's properties using wave functions expanded in the explicitly correlated Gaussian basis. We demonstrate that the well-optimized 8192 basis functions enable a determination of energy levels, ionization potential, and fine and hyperfine splittings in atomic transitions with nearly parts per million precision. The results open a window to a spectroscopic determination of nuclear properties of boron including the charge radius of the proton halo in the $^8$B nucleus.

Frequency-dependent polarizability of helium including relativistic effects with nuclear recoil terms

Future metrology standards will be partly based on physical quantities computed from first principles rather than measured. In particular, a new pressure standard can be established if the dynamic polarizability of helium can be determined from theory with an uncertainty smaller than 0.2 ppm. We present calculations of the frequency-dependent part of this quantity including relativistic effects with full account of leading nuclear recoil terms and using highly optimized explicitly correlated basis sets. A particular emphasis is put on uncertainty estimates. At the He-Ne laser wavelength of 632.9908 nm, the computed polarizability value of 1.391 811 41 a.u. has uncertainty of 0.1 ppm that is two orders of magnitude smaller than those of the most accurate polarizability measurements. We also obtained an accurate expansion of the helium refractive index in powers of density.

Precision Test of Many-Body QED in the Be$^+$ $2p$ Fine Structure Doublet Using Short-Lived Isotopes

Absolute transition frequencies of the $2s\; ^2{\rm S}_{1/2} \rightarrow 2p\;^2\mathrm{P}_{1/2,3/2}$ transitions in Be$^+$ were measured for the isotopes $^{7,9-12}$Be. The fine structure splitting of the $2p$ state and its isotope dependence are extracted and compared to results of \textit{ab initio} calculations using explicitly correlated basis functions, including relativistic and quantum electrodynamics effects at the order of $m α^6$ and $m α^7 \ln α$. Accuracy has been improved in both the theory and experiment by 2 orders of magnitude, and good agreement is observed. This represents one of the most accurate tests of quantum electrodynamics for many-electron systems, being insensitive to nuclear uncertainties.

Electromagnetic moments of the bound system of charged particles

We consider a bound system of particles interacting via electromagnetic forces in an external electromagnetic field, including leading relativistic corrections. Each particle has a definite mass, charge, spin, and charge radius. We introduce suitable canonical transformations and a perturbation scheme to obtain a Hamiltonian which describes the global dynamics of the system. This enables the derivation of formulas for various electromagnetic moments, such as the magnetic dipole moment, the mean square charge radius, and the electric dipole polarizability.

Ground state hyperfine splitting in the Be$^+$ ion

Relativistic and QED corrections are calculated for the hyperfine splitting (hfs) in the $2S_{1/2}$ ground state of $^{9}$Be$^+$ ions with an exact account for electronic correlations. The achieved accuracy is sufficient to determine the finite nuclear size effects from the comparison to the experimental hfs value. The obtained results establish the ground to determine the neutron halo in $^{11}$Be.

On the empirical dipole polarizability of He from spectroscopy of HeH$^{+}$

Using a long-range polarization potential for HeH$^{+}$, we can obtain an empirical value for the Boltzmann constant $k_{B}$ with an order of magnitude greater precision than the previous best experimental value based on the dipole polarizability of $^{4}$He. We find that relativistic and QED effects of order $α_{\rm FS}^{3}$ in the fine structure constant are crucial in the quadrupole polarizability in order to fit the dipole polarizbility with this precision using the polarization potential. By calculating finite-mass corrections for $^{3}$He, we also present theoretical values for the dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities of $^{3}$He with 9 and 7 digits of precision respectively.

Quantum electrodynamics corrections to the $2P$ fine splitting in Li

We consider quantum electrodynamics (QED) corrections to the fine splitting $E(2P_{3/2}) - E(2P_{1/2})$ in the Li atom. We derive complete formulas for the $m\,α^6$ and $m\,α^7\,\lnα$ contributions and calculate them numerically using highly optimized, explicitly correlated basis functions. The obtained results resolve disagreement between measurements and lay the foundations for investigation of QED effects in light, many-electron atoms.

Ground state hyperfine splitting in ^6,7Li atoms and the nuclear structure

Relativistic and QED corrections were calculated for hyperfine splitting of the $2S_{1/2}$ ground state in $^{6,7}$Li atoms with an exact account for electronic correlations. The resulting theoretical predictions achieved such a precision level that, by comparison with experimental values, they enable determination of the nuclear properties. In particular, the obtained results show that the $^7$Li nucleus, having a charge radius smaller than $^6$Li, has about a 40% larger Zemach radius. Together with known differences in the electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole moments, this calls for a deeper understanding of the Li nuclear structure.

Relativistic, QED, and nuclear mass effects in the magnetic shielding of $^3$He

The magnetic shielding $σ$ of $^3$He is studied. The complete relativistic corrections of order $O(α^2)$, leading QED corrections of order $O(α^3 \lnα)$, and finite nuclear mass effects of order $O(m/m_{\rm N})$ are calculated with high numerical precision. The resulting theoretical predictions for $σ= 59.967~43(10)\cdot 10^{-6}$ are the most accurate to date among all elements and support the use of $^3$He as a NMR standard.

Dipole Excitation of Dipositronium

The energy interval between the ground and the P-wave excited states of the recently discovered positronium molecule Ps_2 is evaluated, including the relativistic and the leading logarithmic radiative corrections, E_P-E_S = 0.181 586 7(8) a.u. The P-state, decaying usually via annihilation, is found to decay into the ground state by an electric dipole transition 19 percent of the time. Anticipated observation of this transition will provide insight into this exotic system.
