Born-Oppenheimer potentials for $Π$, $Δ$, and $Φ$ states of the hydrogen molecule

We report on accurate variational calculations of the Born-Oppenheimer potential for excited states of the hydrogen molecule with $Π$, $Δ$, and $Φ$ symmetries. The obtained potential energy curves reach the relative precision of $10^{-9}$ or better along internuclear distances of 0.01 -- 20 au. Calculations rely on recursive evaluation of two-center two-electron molecular integrals with exponential functions in arbitrary precision arithmetics. Our results for most of the states are the first ever reported, and for the previously calculated states constitute an improvement by several orders of magnitude.

QED calculations of energy levels of helium-like ions with $5 \leq Z \leq 30$

A calculation of two-electron QED effects to all orders in the nuclear binding strength parameter $Zα$ is presented for the ground and $n = 2$ excited states of helium-like ions. After subtracting the first terms of the $Zα$ expansion from the all-order results, we identify the higher-order QED effects of order $mα^7$ and higher. Combining the higher-order remainder with the results complete through order $mα^6$ from [V. A. Yerokhin and K. Pachucki, Phys. Rev. A 81, 022507 (2010)], we obtain the most accurate theoretical predictions for the ground and non-mixing $n=2$ states of helium-like ions with $Z = 5-30$. For the mixing $2^1 P_1$ and $2^3 P_1$ states, we extend the previous calculation by evaluating the higher-order mixing correction and show that it defines the uncertainty of theoretical calculations in the $LS$ coupling for $Z > 10$.

Relativistic Bethe logarithm for triplet states of helium-like ions

We report a calculation of relativistic corrections of order $mα^7$ to the Bethe logarithm for the $2^3S$ and $2^3P$ states of helium-like ions. The calculation is required for improving the accuracy of theoretical energies of helium-like ions and for checking the evaluation of the $mα^7$ effects in helium performed in [V. Patkóš, V. A. Yerokhin, K. Pachucki, Phys. Rev. A 103, 042809 (2021)], where a significant discrepancy with experimental results was found. The large-$Z$ limit of the relativistic Bethe logarithm is determined numerically, in excellent agreement with the analytical results obtained from the hydrogen theory.

Nonradiative $α^7m$ QED effects in Lamb shift of helium triplet states

Theoretical predictions for the Lamb shift in helium are limited by unknown quantum electrodynamic effects of the order $α^7m$, where $α$ is the fine-structure constant and $m$ is the electron mass. We make an important step towards the complete calculation of these effects by deriving the most challenging part, which is induced by the virtual photon exchange between all three helium particles, the two electrons, and the nucleus. The complete calculation of the $α^7m$ effect including the radiative corrections will allow comparing of the nuclear charge radii determined from the electronic and muonic helium atoms and thus provide a stringent test of the Standard Model of fundamental interactions.

Nonrelativistic energy of tritium-containing hydrogen molecule isotopologues

The nonrelativistic energy of low lying rovibrational levels of HT, DT, and \T\ is determined to an absolute accuracy of $10^{-7}-10^{-8}$ cm$^{-1}$ using the variational method with the four-body nonadiabatic James-Coolidge functions. The new results increase the accuracy of the nonrelativistic component of the energy levels by several orders of magnitude. As a consequence, the total transition energies are improved by at least an order of magnitude.

QED effects on the nuclear magnetic shielding of $^3$He

The leading quantum electrodynamic corrections to the nuclear magnetic shielding in one- and two-electron atomic systems are obtained in a complete form, and the shielding constants of $^1$H, $^3$He$^+$, and $^3$He are calculated to be $17.735\,436(3) \cdot 10^{-6}$, $35.507\,434(9)\cdot 10^{-6}$, and $59.967\,029(23)\cdot 10^{-6}$, respectively. These results are orders of magnitude more accurate than previous ones, and, with the ongoing measurement of the nuclear magnetic moment of $^3$He$^+$ and planned $^3$He$^{2+}$, they open the window for high-precision absolute magnetometry using $^3$He NMR probes. The presented theoretical approach is applicable to all other light atomic and molecular systems, which facilitates the improved determination of magnetic moments of any light nuclei.

Radiative $\bm{α^7m}$ QED contribution to the helium Lamb shift

We present a derivation of the last unknown part of the $α^7m$ contribution to the Lamb shift of a two-electron atom, induced by the radiative QED effects beyond the Bethe logarithm. This derivation is performed in the framework of nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics and is valid for the triplet (spin $S = 1$) atomic states. The obtained formulas are free from any divergences and are suitable for a numerical evaluation. This opens a way for a complete numerical calculation of the $α^7m$ QED effects in helium, which will allow an accurate determination of the nuclear charge radius from measurements of helium transition frequencies.

Relativistic corrections to the Bethe logarithm for the $2^3S$ and $2^3P$ states of He

With this work we start a project of calculating the QED contribution of order $α^7m$ to the $2^3P$-$2^3S$ transition energy in helium, aiming for an accurate determination of the nuclear charge radius $r_E$ from measurements of the corresponding transition frequency. Together with the complementary determination of $r_E$ from muonic helium, this project will provide a stringent test of universality of electromagnetic interactions of leptons in the Standard Model. We report a calculation of the relativistic corrections to the Bethe logarithm for the $2^3S$ and $2^3P$ states, which is the most numerically demanding part of the project.

Hyperfine structure in the HD molecule

We investigate interactions between the proton spin, the deuteron spin, and the orbital angular momentum in the electronic ground state of the HD molecule. These interactions lead to hyperfine splittings of molecular energy levels. Our numerical results for the first rotational level agree well with the currently most accurate measurement performed by Ramsey {\em et al.} in the 1950s. Knowledge of the hyperfine structure of other levels is necessary for the accurate determination of rovibrational transition energies in spectroscopic measurements. We present theoretical predictions and share the numerical code used to perform numerical calculations. This work sets the ground for high precision spectroscopic tests of hyperfine interactions in molecular systems. In particular we determine the value of the deuteron quadrupole moment $Q = 0.2856(2)$ fm$^2$ and give outlook for improving its accuracy by three orders of magnitude.

preprint2020arXiv

Hyperfine structure of the first rotational level in H$_2$, D$_2$ and HD molecules and the deuteron quadrupole moment

We perform the four-body calculation of the hyperfine structure in the first rotational state $J=1$ of the H$_2$, D$_2$, and HD molecules and determine the accurate value for the deuteron electric quadrupole moment $Q_d = 0.285\,699(15)(18)$ fm$^2$ in significant disagreement with former spectroscopic determinations. Our results for the hyperfine parameters agree very well with the currently most accurate molecular-beam magnetic resonance measurement performed several decades ago by N.F. Ramsey and coworkers. They also indicate the significance of previously neglected nonadiabatic effects. Moreover, a very good agreement with the recent calculation of $Q_d$ based on the chiral effective field theory, although much less accurate, indicates the importance of the spin dependence of nucleon interactions in the accurate description of nuclei.

Long-range asymptotics of exchange energy in the hydrogen molecule

The exchange energy, i.e. the splitting $ΔE$ between gerade and ungerade states in the hydrogen molecule has proven very difficult in numerical calculation at large internuclear distances $R$, while known results are sparse and highly inaccurate. On the other hand, there are conflicting analytical results in the literature concerning its asymptotics. In this work we develop a flexible and efficient numerical approach using explicitly correlated exponential functions and demonstrate highly accurate exchange energies for internuclear distances as large as 57.5 au. This approach may find further applications in calculations of inter-atomic interactions. In particular, our results support the asymptotics form $ΔE \sim R^{5/2}e^{-2R}$, but with the leading coefficient being $2\,σ$ away from the analytically derived value.

QED calculation of ionization energies of $1snd$ states in helium

Quantum electrodynamical (QED) calculations of ionization energies of the $1snd\,D$ states are performed for the helium atom. We reproduce the previously known relativistic and QED effects up to order $mα^5$ and extend the theory by calculating the complete $mα^6$ correction. The total contribution of the $mα^6$ effects is shown to be much smaller than previously estimated, due to a large cancelation between the radiative and non-radiative parts of this correction. As a result of our calculations, we confirm the previously reported deviations between measured transition energies and theoretical predictions for the $nD$--$2S$ and $nD$--$2P$ transitions. Possible reasons for this discrepancy are analyzed.

Equation of motion for a bound system of charged particles

We consider a bound system of charged particles moving in an external electromagnetic field, including leading relativistic corrections. The difference from the point particle with a magnetic moment comes from the presence of polarizabilities. Due to the lack of separation of the total momentum from the internal degrees of freedom, the notion of polarizability of the bound state immersed in the continuum spectrum of the global motion is nontrivial. We introduce a bound-continuum perturbation theory and obtain a complete formula for the equation of motion for a polarizable bound system, such as atom, ion, or the nucleus. This formula may find applications when high precision is sought and small effects due polarizabilities are important.

Rovibrational energy levels of the hydrogen molecule through nonadiabatic perturbation theory

We present an accurate theoretical determination of rovibrational energy levels of the hydrogen molecule and its isotopologues in its electronic ground state. We consider all significant corrections to the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, obtained within nonadiabatic perturbation theory, including the mixed nonadiabatic-relativistic effects. Quantum electrodynamic corrections in the leading $α^5\,m$ and the next-to-leading $α^6\,m$ orders, as well as finite nuclear size effect, are also taken into account but within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation only. Final results for the transition wavelength between rovibrational levels achieve accuracy of the order of $10^{-3}$--$10^{-7}$ cm$^{-1}$, and are provided by simple to use computer code.

Schrödinger equation solved for the hydrogen molecule with unprecedented accuracy

The hydrogen molecule can be used for determination of physical constants and for improved tests of the hypothetical long range force between hadrons, which requires a sufficiently accurate knowledge of the molecular levels. For this reason, we have undertaken a project of significant improvements in theoretical predictions of H$_2$ and perform the first step, which is the solution of the nonrelativistic Schrödinger equation to the unprecedented accuracy of $10^{-12}$. This will inspire, we hope, a parallel progress in the spectroscopy of the molecular hydrogen.

Deuteron and triton magnetic moments from NMR spectra of the hydrogen molecule

We present a theory and calculations of the nuclear magnetic shielding with finite nuclear mass effects and determine magnetic moments of deuteron and triton using the known NMR spectra of HD and HT molecules. The results $μ_d = 0.857\,438\,234\,6(53)\;μ_N$ and $μ_t = 2.978\,962\,471(10)\;μ_N$ are more accurate and in a good agreement with the currently accepted values.

Explicitly correlated wave function for a boron atom

We present results of high-precision calculations for a boron atom's properties using wave functions expanded in the explicitly correlated Gaussian basis. We demonstrate that the well-optimized 8192 basis functions enable a determination of energy levels, ionization potential, and fine and hyperfine splittings in atomic transitions with nearly parts per million precision. The results open a window to a spectroscopic determination of nuclear properties of boron including the charge radius of the proton halo in the $^8$B nucleus.

Precision Test of Many-Body QED in the Be$^+$ $2p$ Fine Structure Doublet Using Short-Lived Isotopes

Absolute transition frequencies of the $2s\; ^2{\rm S}_{1/2} \rightarrow 2p\;^2\mathrm{P}_{1/2,3/2}$ transitions in Be$^+$ were measured for the isotopes $^{7,9-12}$Be. The fine structure splitting of the $2p$ state and its isotope dependence are extracted and compared to results of \textit{ab initio} calculations using explicitly correlated basis functions, including relativistic and quantum electrodynamics effects at the order of $m α^6$ and $m α^7 \ln α$. Accuracy has been improved in both the theory and experiment by 2 orders of magnitude, and good agreement is observed. This represents one of the most accurate tests of quantum electrodynamics for many-electron systems, being insensitive to nuclear uncertainties.

Theory of the helium isotope shift

Theory of the isotope shift of the centroid energies of light few-electron atoms is reviewed. Numerical results are presented for the isotope shift of the $2^3P$-$2^3S$ and $2^1S$-$2^3S$ transition energies of $^3$He and $^4$He. By comparing theoretical predictions for the isotope shift with the experimental results, the difference of the squares of the nuclear charge radii of $^3$He and $^4$He, $δR^2$, is determined with high accuracy.

Electromagnetic moments of the bound system of charged particles

We consider a bound system of particles interacting via electromagnetic forces in an external electromagnetic field, including leading relativistic corrections. Each particle has a definite mass, charge, spin, and charge radius. We introduce suitable canonical transformations and a perturbation scheme to obtain a Hamiltonian which describes the global dynamics of the system. This enables the derivation of formulas for various electromagnetic moments, such as the magnetic dipole moment, the mean square charge radius, and the electric dipole polarizability.

Ground state hyperfine splitting in the Be$^+$ ion

Relativistic and QED corrections are calculated for the hyperfine splitting (hfs) in the $2S_{1/2}$ ground state of $^{9}$Be$^+$ ions with an exact account for electronic correlations. The achieved accuracy is sufficient to determine the finite nuclear size effects from the comparison to the experimental hfs value. The obtained results establish the ground to determine the neutron halo in $^{11}$Be.

Quantum electrodynamics corrections to the $2P$ fine splitting in Li

We consider quantum electrodynamics (QED) corrections to the fine splitting $E(2P_{3/2}) - E(2P_{1/2})$ in the Li atom. We derive complete formulas for the $m\,α^6$ and $m\,α^7\,\lnα$ contributions and calculate them numerically using highly optimized, explicitly correlated basis functions. The obtained results resolve disagreement between measurements and lay the foundations for investigation of QED effects in light, many-electron atoms.

Efficient approach to two-centre exponential integrals with applications to excited states of molecular hydrogen

A general approach to evaluation of two-centre two-electron exponential integrals with arbitrary parameters is presented. The results for the Born-Oppenheimer potential for various excited states of molecular hydrogen with Koł os-Wolniewicz functions are obtained with precision exceeding previous values by about 3 orders of magnitude.

preprint2013arXiv

Ground state hyperfine splitting in ^6,7Li atoms and the nuclear structure

Relativistic and QED corrections were calculated for hyperfine splitting of the $2S_{1/2}$ ground state in $^{6,7}$Li atoms with an exact account for electronic correlations. The resulting theoretical predictions achieved such a precision level that, by comparison with experimental values, they enable determination of the nuclear properties. In particular, the obtained results show that the $^7$Li nucleus, having a charge radius smaller than $^6$Li, has about a 40% larger Zemach radius. Together with known differences in the electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole moments, this calls for a deeper understanding of the Li nuclear structure.

Muonic hydrogen and the proton radius puzzle

The extremely precise extraction of the proton radius by Pohl et al. from the measured energy difference between the 2P and 2S states of muonic hydrogen disagrees significantly with that extracted from electronic hydrogen or elastic electron-proton scattering. This is the proton radius puzzle. The origins of the puzzle and the reasons for believing it to be very significant are explained. Various possible solutions of the puzzle are identified, and future work needed to resolve the puzzle is discussed.

The Fundamental Vibration of Molecular Hydrogen

The fundamental ground tone vibration of H2, HD, and D2 is determined to an accuracy of 2 x 10^-4 cm^-1 from Doppler-free laser spectroscopy in the collisionless environment of a molecular beam. This rotationless vibrational splitting is derived from the combination difference between electronic excitation from the X^1Sg+, v=0 and v=1 levels to a common EF^1g+, v=0 level. Agreement within $1σ$ between the experimental result and a full ab initio calculation provides a stringent test of quantum electrodynamics in a chemically-bound system.

Accurate Born-Oppenheimer potential for HeH+

We demonstrate high accuracy calculations for the HeH$^+$ molecule using newly developed analytic formulas for two-center two-electron integrals with exponential functions. The Born-Oppenheimer potential for the ground electronic $^1Σ^+$ state is obtained in the range of 0.1 -- 60 au with precision of about $10^{-12}$ au. As an example at the equilibrium distance $r=1.463\,283$ au the Born-Oppenheimer potential amounts to $-2.978\,708\,310\,771(1)$. Obtained results lay the ground for theoretical predictions in HeH$^+$ with spectroscopic precision.

Correlated exponential functions in high precision calculations for diatomic molecules

Various properties of the general two-center two-electron integral over the explicitly correlated exponential function are analyzed for the potential use in high precision calculations for diatomic molecules. A compact one dimensional integral representation is found, which is suited for the numerical evaluation. Together with recurrence relations, it makes possible the calculation of the two-center two-electron integral with arbitrary powers of electron distances. Alternative approach via the Taylor series in the internuclear distance is also investigated. Although numerically slower, it can be used in cases when recurrences lose stability. Separate analysis is devoted to molecular integrals with integer powers of interelectronic distances $r_{12}$ and the vanishing corresponding nonlinear parameter. Several methods of their evaluation are proposed.

Nuclear structure corrections in muonic deuterium

The muonic hydrogen experiment measuring the $2P-2S$ transition energy [R. Pohl {\em et al.}, Nature {\bf 466}, 213 (2010)] is significantly discrepant with theoretical predictions based on quantum electrodynamics. A possible approach to resolve this conundrum is to compare experimental values with theoretical predictions in another system, muonic deuterium $μ$D. The only correction which might be questioned in $μ$D is that due to the deuteron polarizability. We investigate this effect in detail and observe cancellation with the elastic contribution. The total value obtained for the deuteron structure correction in the $2P-2S$ transition is 1.680(16) meV.

preprint2010arXiv

Born-Oppenheimer potential for H$_2$

The Born-Oppenheimer potential for the $^1Σ_g^+$ state of H$_2$ is obtained in the range of 0.1 -- 20 au, using analytic formulas and recursion relations for two-center two-electron integrals with exponential functions. For small distances James-Coolidge basis is used, while for large distances the Heitler-London functions with arbitrary polynomial in electron variables. In the whole range of internuclear distance about $10^{-15}$ precision is achieved, as an example at the equilibrium distance $r=1.4011$ au the Born-Oppenheimer potential amounts to $-1.174\,475\,931\,400\,216\,7(3)$. Results for the exchange energy verify the formula of Herring and Flicker [Phys. Rev. {\bf 134}, A362 (1964)] for the large internuclear distance asymptotics. The presented analytic approach to Slater integrals opens a window for the high precision calculations in an arbitrary diatomic molecule.

Fine structure of helium and light helium-like ions

Calculational results are presented for the fine-structure splitting of the 2^3P state of helium and helium-like ions with the nuclear charge Z up to 10. Theoretical predictions are in agreement with the latest experimental results for the helium fine-structure intervals as well as with the most of the experimental data available for light helium-like ions. Comparing the theoretical value of the 2^3P_0-2^3P_1 interval in helium with the experimental result [T. Zelevinsky et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 203001 (2005)], we determine the value of the fine-structure constant αwith an accuracy of 31 parts per billion.

Fine structure of helium-like ions and determination of the fine structure constant

We report a calculation of the fine structure splitting in light helium-like atoms, which accounts for all quantum electrodynamical effects up to order α^5 Ry. For the helium atom, we resolve the previously reported disagreement between theory and experiment and determine the fine structure constant with an accuracy of 31 ppb. The calculational results are extensively checked by comparison with the experimental data for different nuclear charges and by evaluation of the hydrogenic limit of individual corrections.

preprint2010arXiv

Helium fine structure theory for determination of α

We present recent progress in the calculation of the helium fine-structure splitting of the 2^3P_J states, based on the quantum electrodynamic theory. Apart from the complete evaluation of mα^7 and m^2/Mα^6 corrections, we have performed extensive tests by comparison with all experimental results for light helium-like ions and with the known large nuclear charge asymptotics of individual corrections. Our theoretical predictions are still limited by the unknown mα^8 term, which is conservatively estimated to be 1.7 kHz. However, comparison with the latest experimental result for the 2^3P_0 - 2^3P_2 transition [M. Smiciklas and T. Shiner, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 123001 (2010)] suggests that the higher-order contribution is in fact much smaller than the theoretical estimate. This means that the spectroscopic determination of αcan be significantly improved if another measurement of the 2^3P_0 - 2^3P_2 transition in helium-like Li^+ or Be^{2+} ion is performed.

Theoretical energies of low-lying states of light helium-like ions

Rigorous quantum electrodynamical calculation is presented for energy levels of the 1^1S, 2^1S, 2^3S, 2^1P_1, and 2^3P_{0,1,2} states of helium-like ions with the nuclear charge Z=3...12. The calculational approach accounts for all relativistic, quantum electrodynamical, and recoil effects up to orders mα^6 and m^2/Mα^5, thus advancing the previously reported theory of light helium-like ions by one order in α.

Finite nuclear mass corrections to electric and magnetic interactions in diatomic molecules

In order to interpret precise measurements of molecular properties the finite nuclear mass corrections to the Born-Oppenheimer approximation have to be accounted for. It is shown that they can be obtained systematically in the perturbative approach. The formulae for the leading corrections to the relativistic contribution to energy, the transition electric dipole moment, the electric polarizability, and the magnetic shielding constant are presented.

Nonadiabatic corrections to rovibrational levels of H$_2$

The leading nonadiabatic corrections to rovibrational levels of a diatomic molecule are expressed in terms of three functions of internuclear distance: corrections to the adiabatic potential, the effective nuclear mass, and the effective moment of inertia. The resulting radial Schrödinger equation for nuclear motion is solved numerically yielding accurate nonadiabatic energies for all rovibrational levels of H$_2$ molecule in excellent agreement with previous calculations by Wolniewicz.

Relativistic, QED, and nuclear mass effects in the magnetic shielding of $^3$He

The magnetic shielding $σ$ of $^3$He is studied. The complete relativistic corrections of order $O(α^2)$, leading QED corrections of order $O(α^3 \lnα)$, and finite nuclear mass effects of order $O(m/m_{\rm N})$ are calculated with high numerical precision. The resulting theoretical predictions for $σ= 59.967~43(10)\cdot 10^{-6}$ are the most accurate to date among all elements and support the use of $^3$He as a NMR standard.
