Propagation of chaos for a stochastic particle system modelling epidemics

We consider a simple stochastic $N$-particle system, already studied by the same authors in \cite{CPS21}, representing different populations of agents. Each agent has a label describing his state of health. We show rigorously that, in the limit $N \to \infty$, propagation of chaos holds, leading to a set of kinetic equations which are a spatially inhomogeneous version of the classical SIR model. We improve a similar result obtained in \cite{CPS21} by using here a different coupling technique, which makes the analysis simpler, more natural and transparent.

Derivation of the Fick's Law for the Lorentz Model in a low density regime

We consider the Lorentz model in a slab with two mass reservoirs at the boundaries. We show that, in a low density regime, there exists a unique stationary solution for the microscopic dynamics which converges to the stationary solution of the heat equation, namely to the linear profile of the density. In the same regime the macroscopic current in the stationary state is given by the Fick's law, with the diffusion coefficient determined by the Green-Kubo formula.

The Boltzmann-Grad Limit of a Hard Sphere System: Analysis of the Correlation Error

We present a quantitative analysis of the Boltzmann-Grad (low-density) limit of a hard sphere system. We introduce and study a set of functions (correlation errors) measuring the deviations in time from the statistical independence of particles (propagation of chaos). In the context of the BBGKY hierarchy, a correlation error of order $k$ measures the event where $k$ particles are connected by a chain of interactions preventing the factorization. We show that, provided $k < \varepsilon^{-α}$, such an error flows to zero with the average density $\varepsilon$, for short times, as $\varepsilon^{γk}$, for some positive $α,γ\in (0,1)$. This provides an information on the size of chaos, namely, $j$ different particles behave as dictated by the Boltzmann equation even when $j$ diverges as a negative power of $\varepsilon$. The result requires a rearrangement of Lanford perturbative series into a cumulant type expansion, and an analysis of many-recollision events.

Macroscopic description of microscopically strongly inhomogenous systems: A mathematical basis for the synthesis of higher gradients metamaterials

We consider the time evolution of a one dimensional $n$-gradient continuum. Our aim is to construct and analyze discrete approximations in terms of physically realizable mechanical systems, called microscopic because they are living on a smaller space scale. We validate our construction by proving a convergence theorem of the microscopic system to the given continuum, as the scale parameter goes to zero.

On the validity of the Boltzmann equation for short range potentials

We consider a classical system of point particles interacting by means of a short range potential. We prove that, in the low--density (Boltzmann--Grad) limit, the system behaves, for short times, as predicted by the associated Boltzmann equation. This is a revisitation and an extension of the thesis of King (unpublished), appeared after the well known result of Lanford for hard spheres, and of a recent paper by Gallagher et al (arXiv: 1208.5753v1). Our analysis applies to any stable and smooth potential. In the case of repulsive potentials (with no attractive parts), we estimate explicitly the rate of convergence.

A diffusion limit for a test particle in a random distribution of scatterers

We consider a point particle moving in a random distribution of obstacles described by a potential barrier. We show that, in a weak-coupling regime, under a diffusion limit suggested by the potential itself, the probability distribution of the particle converges to the solution of the heat equation. The diffusion coefficient is given by the Green-Kubo formula associated to the generator of the diffusion process dictated by the linear Landau equation.

From particle systems to the Landau equation: a consistency result

We consider a system of N classical particles, interacting via a smooth, short- range potential, in a weak-coupling regime. This means that N tends to infinity when the interaction is suitably rescaled. The j-particle marginals, which obey to the usual BBGKY hierarchy, are decomposed into two contributions: one small but strongly oscillating, the other hopefully smooth. Eliminating the first, we arrive to establish the dynamical problem in term of a new hierarchy (for the smooth part) involving a memory term. We show that the first order correction to the free flow converges, as N \rightarrow \infty, to the corresponding term associated to the Landau equation. We also show the related propagation of chaos.

Semiclassical Propagation of Coherent States for the Hartree equation

In this paper we consider the nonlinear Hartree equation in presence of a given external potential, for an initial coherent state. Under suitable smoothness assumptions, we approximate the solution in terms of a time dependent coherent state, whose phase and amplitude can be determined by a classical flow. The error can be estimated in $L^2$ by $C \sqrt {\var}$, $\var$ being the Planck constant. Finally we present a full formal asymptotic expansion.

Mean-field limit and Semiclassical Expansion of a Quantum Particle System

We consider a quantum system constituted by $N$ identical particles interacting by means of a mean-field Hamiltonian. It is well known that, in the limit $N\to\infty$, the one-particle state obeys to the Hartree equation. Moreover, propagation of chaos holds. In this paper, we take care of the $\hbar$ dependence by considering the semiclassical expansion of the $N$-particle system. We prove that each term of the expansion agrees, in the limit $N\to\infty$, with the corresponding one associated with the Hartree equation. We work in the classical phase space by using the Wigner formalism, which seems to be the most appropriate for the present problem.
