Dynamics of several point vortices for the lake equations

The global asymptotic dynamics of point vortices for the lake equations is rigorously derived. Vorticity that is initially sharply concentrated around $N$ distinct vortex centers is proven to remain concentrated for all times. Specifically, we prove weak concentration of the vorticity and in addition strong concentration in the direction of the steepest ascent of the depth function. As a consequence, we obtain the motion law of point vortices following at leading order the level lines of the depth function. The lack of strong localization in the second direction is linked to the vortex filamentation phenomena. The main result allows for any fixed number of vortices and general assumptions on the concentration property of the initial data to be considered. No further properties such as a specific profile or symmetry of the data are required. Vanishing topographies on the boundary are included in our analysis. Our method is inspired by recent results on the evolution of vortex rings in 3D axisymmetric incompressible fluids.

On solutions of the transport equation in the presence of singularities

We consider the transport equation on $[0,T]\times \mathbb{R}^n$ in the situation where the vector field is $BV$ off a set $S\subset [0,T]\times \mathbb{R}^n$. We demonstrate that solutions exist and are unique provided that the set of singularities has a sufficiently small anisotropic fractal dimension and the normal component of the vector field is sufficiently integrable near the singularities. This result improves upon recent results of Ambrosio who requires the vector field to be of bounded variation everywhere. In addition, we demonstrate that under these conditions almost every trajectory of the associated regular Lagrangian flow does not intersect the set $S$ of singularities. Finally, we consider the particular case of an initial set of singularities that evolve in time so the singularities consists of curves in the phase space, which is typical in applications such as vortex dynamics. We demonstrate that solutions of the transport equation exist and are unique provided that the box-counting dimension of the singularities is bounded in terms of the Hölder exponent of the curves.

Collision of almost parallel vortex filaments

We investigate the occurrence of collisions in the evolution of vortex filaments through a system introduced by Klein, Majda and Damodaran [KMD95] and Zakharov [Z88,Z99]. We first establish rigorously the existence of a pair of almost parallel vortex filaments, with opposite circulation, colliding at some point in finite time. The collision mechanism is based on the one of the self-similar solutions of the model, described in [BFM14]. In the second part of this paper we extend this construction to the case of an arbitrary number of filaments, with polygonial symmetry, that are perturbations of a configuration of parallel vortex filaments forming a polygon, with or without its center, rotating with constant angular velocity.

A thin-film limit in the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation relevant for the formation of Néel walls

We consider an asymptotic regime for two-dimensional ferromagnetic films that is consistent with the formation of transition layers (Néel walls). We first establish compactness of S2-valued magnetizations in the energetic regime of Néel walls and characterize the set of accumulation points. We then prove that Néel walls are asymptotically the unique energy minimizing configurations. We finally study the corresponding dynamical issues, namely the compactness properties of the magnetizations under the flow of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation.

A uniqueness criterion for unbounded solutions to the Vlasov-Poisson system

We prove uniqueness for the Vlasov-Poisson system in two and three dimensions under the condition that the $L^p$ norms of the macroscopic density growth at most linearly with respect to $p$. This allows for solutions with logarithmic singularities. We provide explicit examples of initial data that fulfill the uniqueness condition and that exhibit a logarithmic blow-up. In the gravitational two-dimensional case, such states are intimately related to radially symmetric steady solutions of the system. Our method relies on the Lagrangian formulation for the solutions, exploiting the second-order structure of the corresponding ODE.

Collisions of vortex filament pairs

We consider the problem of collisions of vortex filaments for a model introduced by Klein, Majda and Damodaran, and Zakharov to describe the interaction of almost parallel vortex filaments in three-dimensional fluids. Since the results of Crow examples of collisions are searched as perturbations of antiparallel translating pairs of filaments, with initial perturbations related to the unstable mode of the linearized problem; most results are numerical calculations. In this article we first consider a related model for the evolution of pairs of filaments and we display another type of initial perturbation leading to collision in finite time. Moreover we give numerical evidence that it also leads to collision through the initial model. We finally study the self-similar solutions of the model.

Flows of vector fields with point singularities and the vortex-wave system

The vortex-wave system is a model for the evolution of 2D incompressible fluids in which the vorticity is split into a finite sum of Dirac masses plus an Lp part. Existence of a weak solution for this system was recently proved by Lopes Filho, Miot and Nussenzveig Lopes, for p > 2, but their result left open the existence and basic properties of the underlying Lagrangian flow. In this article we study existence, uniqueness and the qualitative properties of the (Lagrangian flow for the) linear transport problem associated to the vortex-wave system. To this end, we study the flow associated to a two-dimensional vector field which is singular at a moving point. We also present an approximation scheme for the flow, with explicit error estimates obtained by adapting results by Crippa and De Lellis for Sobolev vector-fields.

Uniqueness for the 2-D Euler equations on domains with corners

For a large class of non smooth bounded domains, existence of a global weak solution of the 2D Euler equations, with bounded vorticity, was established by Gérard-Varet and Lacave. In the case of sharp domains, the question of uniqueness for such weak solutions is more involved due to the bad behavior of $Δ^{-1}$ close to the boundary. In the present work, we show uniqueness for any bounded and simply connected domain with a finite number of corners of angles smaller than $π/2$. Our strategy relies on a log-Lipschitz type regularity for the velocity field.

Global existence and collisions for symmetric configurations of nearly parallel vortex filaments

We consider the Schrödinger system with Newton-type interactions that was derived by R. Klein, A. Majda and K. Damodaran [18] to modelize the dynamics of N nearly parallel vortex filaments in a 3-dimensional homogeneous incompressible uid. The known large time existence results are due to C. Kenig, G. Ponce and L. Vega [17] and concern the interaction of two filaments and particular configurations of three filaments. In this article we prove large time existence results for particular configurations of four nearly parallel filaments and for a class of configurations of N nearly parallel filaments for any N\geq 2. We also show the existence of travelling wave type dynamics. Finally we describe configurations leading to collision.
