Anisotropic van der Waals Dispersion Forces in Polymers: Structural Symmetry Breaking Leads to Enhanced Conformational Search

The modeling of conformations and dynamics of (bio)polymers is of primary importance for understanding physicochemical properties of soft matter. Although short-range interactions such as covalent and hydrogen bonding control the local arrangement of polymers, non-covalent interactions play a dominant role in determining the global conformations. Here we focus on how the inclusion of many-body effects in van der Waals dispersion affects the outcome of geometry optimizations and molecular dynamics simulations of model polymers. We find that delocalized force contributions are key to explore the conformational landscape, as they induce an anisotropic polarization response which efficiently guides the conformation towards globally optimized structures. This is in contrast with the commonly used pair-wise approach, where the atomic polarizabilities lack information on the global geometry. We show that such local approximation causes the conformational search to be obstructed by conformations with unphysically limited spatial symmetry, while the many-body formalism strongly reduces the roughness of the potential energy landscape.

Role of longitudinal fluctuations in L$1_0$ FePt

L$1_0$ FePt is a technologically important material for a range of novel data storage applications. In the ordered FePt structure the normally non-magnetic Pt ion acquires a magnetic moment, which depends on the local field originating from the neighboring Fe atoms. In this work a model of FePt is constructed, where the induced Pt moment is simulated by using combined longitudinal and rotational spin dynamics. The model is parameterized to include a linear variation of the moment with the exchange field, so that at the Pt site the magnetic moment depends on the Fe ordering. The Curie temperature of FePt is calculated and agrees well with similar models that incorporate the Pt dynamics through an effective Fe-only Hamiltonian. By computing the dynamic correlation function the anisotropy field and the Gilbert damping are extracted over a range of temperatures. The anisotropy exhibits a power-law dependence with temperature with exponent $n\approx2.1$. This agrees well with what observed experimentally and it is obtained without including a two-ion anisotropy term as in other approaches. Our work shows that incorporating longitudinal fluctuations into spin dynamics calculations is crucial for understanding the properties of materials with induced moments.

Black hole thermodynamics, conformal couplings, and R^2 terms

Lovelock theory provides a tractable model of higher-curvature gravity in which several questions can be studied analytically. This is the reason why, in the last years, this theory has become the favorite arena to study the effects of higher-curvature terms in the context of AdS/CFT correspondence. Lovelock theory also admits extensions that permit to accommodate matter coupled to gravity in a non-minimal way. In this setup, problems such as the backreaction of matter on the black hole geometry can also be solved exactly. In this paper, we study the thermodynamics of black holes in theories of gravity of this type, which include both higher-curvature terms, U(1) gauge fields, and conformal couplings with matter fields in D dimensions. These charged black hole solutions exhibit a backreacting scalar field configuration that is regular everywhere outside and on the horizon, and may exist both in asymptotically flat and asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spaces. We work out explicitly the boundary action for this theory, which renders the variational problem well-posed and suffices to regularize the Euclidean action in AdS. We also discuss several interrelated properties of the theory, such as its duality symmetry under field redefinition and how it acts on black holes and gravitational wave solutions.

Chemical potential driven phase transition of black holes in AdS space

Einstein-Maxwell theory conformally coupled to a scalar field in D dimensions may exhibit an instability at low temperature. We find an explicit solution that represents a charged asymptotically Anti-de Sitter black hole with a scalar field profile that is regular everywhere outside and on the horizon. This provides a tractable model to study the phase transition of hairy black holes in Anti-de Sitter space in which the backreaction on the geometry can be solved analytically.

Pole Inflation - Shift Symmetry and Universal Corrections

An appealing explanation for the Planck data is provided by inflationary models with a singular non-canonical kinetic term: a Laurent expansion of the kinetic function translates into a potential with a nearly shift-symmetric plateau in canonical fields. The shift symmetry can be broken at large field values by including higher-order poles, which need to be hierarchically suppressed in order not to spoil the inflationary plateau. The herefrom resulting corrections to the inflationary dynamics and predictions are shown to be universal at lowest order and possibly to induce power loss at large angular scales. At lowest order there are no corrections from a pole of just one order higher and we argue that this phenomenon is related to the well-known extended no-scale structure arising in string theory scenarios. Finally, we outline which other corrections may arise from string loop effects.

The Unity of Cosmological Attractors

Recently, several broad classes of inflationary models have been discovered whose cosmological predictions are stable with respect to significant modifications of the inflaton potential. Some classes of models are based on a non-minimal coupling to gravity. These models, which we will call $ξ$-attractors, describe universal cosmological attractors (including Higgs inflation) and induced inflation models. Another class describes conformal attractors (including Starobinsky inflation and T-models) and their generalization to $α$-attractors. The aim of this paper is to elucidate the common denominator of these models: their attractor properties stem from a pole of order two in the kinetic term of the inflaton field in the Einstein frame formulation, prior to switching to the canonical variables. We point out that $α$- and universal attractors differ in the subleading corrections to the kinetic term. As a final step towards unification of $ξ$ and $α$ attractors, we introduce a special class of $ξ$-attractors which is fully equivalent to $α$-attractors with the identification $α= 1+{1\over 6ξ}$. There is no theoretical lower bound on $r$ in this class of models.

Analytical results on quantum correlations of few bosons in a double-well trap

We consider a finite number $N$ of interacting bosonic atoms at zero temperature confined in a one-dimensional double-well trap and study this system by using the two-site Bose-Hubbard (BH) Hamiltonian. For systems with $N=2$ and $N=3$, and $N=4$ bosons we analytically solve the eigenproblem associated to this Hamiltonian and find its lowest energetic state. We investigate the structure of the ground state by varying the strength of the boson-boson interaction from the strongly attractive regime to the deep repulsive one. We characterize the ground state of the two-site BH Hamiltonian by calculating the Fisher information $F$, the coherence visibility $α$, and the entanglement entropy $S$. For these quantities we provide analytical formulas that we use to study $F$, $α$, and $S$ as functions of the interaction between the particles. We discuss the difference existing, in the deep repulsive regime, between the case with an even number of bosons and that with an odd number of particles, both in the structure of the lowest energetic state and in the behavior of the three above ground-state characterizing parameters
