Critical points of WAdS/CFT and higher-curvature gravity

WAdS/WCFT correspondence is an interesting realization of non-AdS holography. It relates 3-dimensional Warped-Anti-de Sitter (WAdS$_3$) spaces to a special class of 2-dimensional quantum field theory with chiral scaling symmetry that acts only on right-moving modes. The latter are often called Warped Conformal Field Theories (WCFT$_2$), and their existence makes WAdS/WCFT particularly interesting as a tool to investigate a new type of 2-dimensional conformal structure. Besides, WAdS/WCFT is interesting because it enables to apply holographic techniques to the microstate counting problem of non-AdS, non-supersymmetric black holes. Asymptotically WAdS$_3$ black holes (WBH$_3$) appear as solutions of topologically massive theories, Chern-Simons theories, and many other models. Here, we explore WBH$_3\times Σ_{D-3}$ solutions of $D$-dimensional higher-curvature gravity, with $Σ_{D-3}$ being different internal manifolds, typically given by products of deformations of hyperbolic spaces, although we also consider warped products with time-dependent deformations. These geometries are solutions of the second order higher-curvature theory at special (critical) points of the parameter space, where the theory exhibits a sort of degeneracy. We argue that the dual (W)CFT at those points is actually trivial. In many respects, these critical points of WAdS$_3 \times Σ_{D-3}$ vacua are the squashed/stretched analogs of the AdS$_D$ Chern-Simons point of Lovelock gravity.

Extremal Surfaces and Thin-shell Wormholes

We study extremal surfaces in a traversable wormhole geometry that connects two locally AdS$_5$ asymptotic regions. In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we use these to compute the holographic entanglement entropy for different configurations: First, we consider an extremal surface anchored at the boundary on a spatial $2$-sphere of radius $R$. The other scenario is a slab configuration which extends in two of the boundary spacelike directions while having a finite size $L$ in the third one. We show that in both cases the divergent and the finite pieces of the holographic entanglement entropy give results consistent with the holographic picture and this is used to explore the phase transitions that the dual theory undergoes. The geometries we consider here are stable thin-shell wormholes with flat codimension-one hypersurfaces at fixed radial coordinate. They appear as electrovacuum solutions of higher-curvature gravity theories coupled to Abelian gauge fields. The presence of the thin-shells produces a refraction of the extremal surfaces in the bulk, leading to the presence of cusps in the phase space diagram. Further, the traversable wormhole captures a phase transition for the subsystems made up of a union of disconnected regions in different boundaries. We discuss these and other features of the phase diagram.

Current-current deformations, conformal integrals and correlation functions

Motivated by the recent work on $T\bar{T}$-type deformations of 2D CFTs, a especial class of single-trace deformations of AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence has been investigated. From the worldsheet perspective, this corresponds to a marginal deformation of the $σ$-model on AdS$_3$ that yields a string background that interpolates between AdS$_3$ and a flat linear dilaton solution. Here, with the intention of studying this worldsheet CFT further, we consider it in the presence of a boundary. In a previous paper, we computed different correlation functions of this theory on the disk, including the bulk 1-point function, the boundary-boundary 2-point function, and the bulk-boundary 2-point function. This led us to compute the anomalous dimension of both bulk and boundary vertex operators, which first required a proper regularization of the ultraviolet divergences of the conformal integrals. Here, we extend the analysis by computing the bulk-bulk 2-point function on the disk and other observables on the sphere. We prove that the renormalization of the vertex operators proposed in our previous works is consistent with the form of the sphere $N$-point functions.

On string theory on AdS$_3\times {M}_7$ in the tensionless limit

We review old and recent results on a special limit of string theory on AdS$_3\times M_7$ with pure NS-NS fluxes: the limit in which the string length $\ell_s=\sqrt{α'}$ equals the AdS$_3$ radius $R $. At this point of the moduli space, the theory exhibits special properties, which we discuss. Special attention is focused on features of correlation functions that are related to the non-compactness of the boundary CFT target space, and on how these features change when the point $k\equiv R^2/α' =1$ is approached. Also, we briefly review recent proposals for exact realizations of AdS/CFT correspondence at this special point. \[\] This is the transcript of the talk delivered by the author at the 8$^{\text{th}}$ edition of the Quantum Gravity in the Southern Cone conference, held in Patagonia, December 16$^{\text{th}}$ - 20$^{\text{th}}$, 2019.

Quasitopological electromagnetism and black holes

In this paper we extend the quasitopological electromagnetism, recently introduced by H.-S. Liu et al. [arXiv:1907.10876], to arbitrary dimensions by introducing a fundamental $p$-form field. This allows us to construct new dyonic black hole solutions in odd dimensions, as well as regular $D$-dimensional black holes and solitons. The three-dimensional system consists of a Maxwell field interacting with a scalar field, leading to a deformation of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole. We present the general formulas defining the black hole solutions in arbitrary dimensions in Lovelock theory and explore the thermal properties of the asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes in the gravitational framework of general relativity. In five dimensions, the latter black holes possess a rich phase space structure in the canonical ensemble, giving rise to as many as five different black hole phases at a fixed temperature, for a given range of the parameters.

Topological invariants and the definition of energy in quadratic gravity theory

We provide a simple method to compute the energy in higher curvature gravity in asymptotically AdS spacetimes in even dimensions. It follows from the combined use of topological terms added to the gravity action, and the Wald charges derived from the augmented action functional. No additional boundary terms are needed. As a consistency check, we show that the formula for the conserved quantities derived in this way yields the correct result for the mass of asymptotically AdS black holes.

Critical points of the Exotic Massive 3D Gravity

Exotic Massive 3D Gravity (EMG) is a higher order generalization of Topologically Massive Gravity. As in other theories of this sort, the conserved charges associated to the asymptotic diffeomorphisms that preserve the boundary conditions in AdS3 spacetime span two copies of the Virasoro algebra with non-vanishing central charges. Here, we discuss the values of these central charges and the corresponding conformal anomaly in relation to the phase space of the theory.

Black hole thermodynamics, conformal couplings, and R^2 terms

Lovelock theory provides a tractable model of higher-curvature gravity in which several questions can be studied analytically. This is the reason why, in the last years, this theory has become the favorite arena to study the effects of higher-curvature terms in the context of AdS/CFT correspondence. Lovelock theory also admits extensions that permit to accommodate matter coupled to gravity in a non-minimal way. In this setup, problems such as the backreaction of matter on the black hole geometry can also be solved exactly. In this paper, we study the thermodynamics of black holes in theories of gravity of this type, which include both higher-curvature terms, U(1) gauge fields, and conformal couplings with matter fields in D dimensions. These charged black hole solutions exhibit a backreacting scalar field configuration that is regular everywhere outside and on the horizon, and may exist both in asymptotically flat and asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spaces. We work out explicitly the boundary action for this theory, which renders the variational problem well-posed and suffices to regularize the Euclidean action in AdS. We also discuss several interrelated properties of the theory, such as its duality symmetry under field redefinition and how it acts on black holes and gravitational wave solutions.

Chemical potential driven phase transition of black holes in AdS space

Einstein-Maxwell theory conformally coupled to a scalar field in D dimensions may exhibit an instability at low temperature. We find an explicit solution that represents a charged asymptotically Anti-de Sitter black hole with a scalar field profile that is regular everywhere outside and on the horizon. This provides a tractable model to study the phase transition of hairy black holes in Anti-de Sitter space in which the backreaction on the geometry can be solved analytically.

Conformal field theories from deformations of theories with $W_n$ symmetry

We construct a set of non-rational conformal field theories that consist of deformations of Toda field theory for sl(n). Besides conformal invariance, the theories still enjoy a remnant infinite-dimensional affine symmetry. The case n=3 is used to illustrate this phenomenon, together with further deformations that yield enhanced Kac-Moody symmetry algebras. For generic n we compute N-point correlation functions on the Riemann sphere and show that these can be expressed in terms of sl(n) Toda field theory correlation functions.

Hairy Lovelock black holes and Stueckelberg mechanism for Weyl symmetry

Lovelock theory of gravity -and, in particular, Einstein theory- admits black hole solutions that can be equipped with a hair by conformally coupling the theory to a real scalar field. This is a secondary hair, meaning that it does not endow the black hole with new quantum numbers. It rather consists of a non-trivial scalar field profile of fixed intensity which turns out to be regular everywhere outside and on the horizon and, provided the cosmological constant is negative, behaves at large distance in a way compatible with the Anti-de Sitter (AdS) asymptotic. In this paper, we review the main features of these hairy black hole solutions, such as their geometrical and thermodynamical properties. The conformal coupling to matter in dimension $D>4$ in principle includes higher-curvature terms. These couplings are obtained from the Lovelock action through the Stueckelberg strategy. As a consequence, the resulting scalar-tensor theory exhibits a self-duality under field redefinition that resembles T-duality. Through this field redefinition, the matter content of the theory transforms into a Lovelock action for a dual geometry. Since the hairy black holes only exist for special relations between the dual Lovelock coupling constants, it is natural to compare those relations with the causality bounds coming from AdS/CFT. We observe that, while the lower causality bound is always obeyed, the upper causality bound is violated. The latter, however, is saturated in the large $D$ limit.

Scattering of low lying states in the black hole atmosphere

We investigate finite $α'$ effects in string theory on a black hole background. By explicitly computing tree level scattering amplitudes, we confirm a duality between seemingly different states recently conjectured by Giveon, Itzhaki, and Kutasov in [arXiv:1603.05822]. We verify that the relevant 3-point functions factorize in such a way that the duality between oscillator and winding states becomes manifest. This leads to determine the precise normalization of the dual vertex operators, and confirms at the level of the interacting theory the identification of states suggested by the analysis of the spectrum. This result implies a duality between two seemingly distinct mechanisms driving the violation of the string winding number in the black hole atmosphere.

Supertranslations and Superrotations at the Black Hole Horizon

We show that the asymptotic symmetries close to nonextremal black hole horizons are generated by an extension of supertranslations. This group is generated by a semidirect sum of Virasoro and Abelian currents. The charges associated with the asymptotic Killing symmetries satisfy the same algebra. When considering the special case of a stationary black hole, the zero mode charges correspond to the angular momentum and the entropy at the horizon.

Chern-Simons action for inhomogeneous Virasoro group as an extension of three dimensional flat gravity

We initiate the study of a Chern-Simons action associated to the semi-direct sum of the Virasoro algebra with its coadjoint representation. This model extends the standard Chern-Simons formulation of three dimensional flat gravity and is similar to the higher-spin extension of three dimensional anti-de Sitter or flat gravity. The extension can also be constructed for the exotic but not for the cosmological constant deformation of flat gravity.

Evanescent gravitons in Warped Anti-de Sitter space

Besides black holes, the phase space of three-dimensional massive gravity about Warped-Anti de Sitter (WAdS) space contains solutions that decay exponentially in time. They describe evanescent graviton configurations that, while governed by a wave equation with non-vanishing effective mass, do not carry net gravitational energy. Explicit examples of such solutions have been found in the case of Topologically Massive Gravity; here, we generalize them to a much more general ghost-free massive deformation, with the difference being that the decay rate gets corrected due to the presence of higher-order terms.

From Lorentz-Chern-Simons to Massive Gravity in 2+1 Dimensions

We propose a generalization of Chiral Gravity, which follows from considering a Chern-Simons action for the spin connection with anti-symmetric contorsion. The theory corresponds to Topologically Massive Gravity at the chiral point non-minimally coupled to an additional scalar mode that gathers the torsion degree of freedom. In this setup, the effective cosmological constant (the inverse of the curvature radius of maximally symmetric solutions) is either negative or zero, and it enters as an integration constant associated to the value of the contorsion at infinity. We explain how this is not in conflict with the Zamolodchikov's $c$-theorem holding in the dual boundary theory. In fact, we conjecture that the theory formulated about three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space is dual to a two-dimensional conformal field theory whose right- and left-moving central charges are given by $c_{R}=24k$ and $c_{L}=0$, respectively, being $k$ the level of the Chern-Simons action. We study the classical theory both at the linear and non-linear level. In particular, we show how Chiral Gravity is included as a special sector. In addition, the theory has other sectors, which we explore; we exhibit analytic exact solutions that are not solutions of Topologically Massive Gravity (and, consequently, neither of General Relativity) and still satisfy Brown-Henneaux asymptotically AdS$_{3}$ boundary conditions.

Holographic entropy of Warped-AdS$_3$ black holes

We study the asymptotic symmetries of three-dimensional Warped Anti-de Sitter (WAdS) spaces in three-dimensional New Massive Gravity (NMG). For a specific choice of asymptotic boundary conditions, we find that the algebra of charges is infinite-dimensional and coincides with the semidirect sum of Virasoro algebra with non-vanishing central charge and an affine $\hat{u}(1)_k$ Kač-Moody algebra. We show that the WAdS black hole configurations organize in terms of two commuting Virasoro algebras. We identify the Virasoro generators that expand the associated representations in the dual Warped Conformal Field Theory (WCFT) and, by applying the Warped version of the Cardy formula, we prove that the microscopic WCFT computation exactly reproduces the entropy of black holes in WAdS space.

Minimal Log Gravity

Minimal Massive Gravity (MMG) is an extension of three-dimensional Topologically Massive Gravity that, when formulated about Anti-de Sitter space, accomplishes to solve the tension between bulk and boundary unitarity that other models in three dimensions suffer from. We study this theory at the chiral point, i.e. at the point of the parameter space where one of the central charges of the dual conformal field theory vanishes. We investigate the non-linear regime of the theory, meaning that we study exact solutions to the MMG field equations that are not Einstein manifolds. We exhibit a large class of solutions of this type, which behave asymptotically in different manners. In particular, we find analytic solutions that represent two-parameter deformations of extremal Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black holes. These geometries behave asymptotically as solutions of the so-called Log Gravity, and, despite the weakened falling-off close to the boundary, they have finite mass and finite angular momentum, which we compute. We also find time-dependent deformations of BTZ that obey Brown-Henneaux asymptotic boundary conditions. The existence of such solutions show that Birkhoff theorem does not hold in MMG at the chiral point. Other peculiar features of the theory at the chiral point, such as the degeneracy it exhibits in the decoupling limit of the Cotton tensor, are discussed.

One-loop amplitudes of winding strings in AdS$_3$ and the Coulomb gas approach

We discuss a Coulomb gas realization of $n$-point correlation functions in the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model that is suitable to compute scattering amplitudes of winding strings in 3-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space at tree-level and one-loop. This is a refined version of previously proposed free-field realizations that, among other features, accomplishes to make the $H_3^+$ WZW-Liouville correspondence manifest.

Screening Stringy Horizons

It has been argued recently that string theory effects qualitatively modify the effective black hole geometry experienced by modes with radial momentum of order $1/\sqrt{α'}$. At tree level, these $α'$-effects can be explicitly worked out in two-dimensional string theory, and have a natural explanation in the T-dual description as coming from the integration of the zero-mode of the linear dilaton, what yields a contribution that affects the scattering phase-shift in a peculiar manner. It has also been argued that the phase-shift modification has its origin in a region of the moduli space that does not belong to the exterior black hole geometry, leading to the conclusion that at high energy the physics of the problem is better described by the dual model. Here, we elaborate on this argument. We consider the contribution of worldsheet instantons in the 2D Euclidean black hole sigma-model and study its influence on the phase-shift at high energy.

Warped-AdS3 black holes with scalar halo

We construct a stretched (aka Warped) Anti-de Sitter black hole in 3 dimensions supported by a real scalar field configuration. The latter is regular everywhere outside and on the horizon. No hair theorems in 3 dimensions demand the matter to be coupled to the curvature in a non-minimal way; however, this coupling can still be of the Horndeski type, i.e. yielding second order field equations similar to those appearing in the context of Galileon theories. These Warped-Anti-de Sitter black holes exhibit interesting thermodynamical properties, such as finite Hawking temperature and entropy. We compute the black hole entropy in the gravity theory and speculate with the possibility of this to admit a microscopic description in terms of a dual (Warped) Conformal Field Theory. We also discuss the inner and outer black hole mechanics.

Black hole solutions in Chern-Simons AdS supergravity

We study charged AdS black hole solutions in five-dimensional Chern-Simons supergravity. The minimal supergroup containing such AdSxU(1) configurations is the superunitary group SU(2,2|N). For this model, we find analytic black hole solutions that asymptote to locally AdS spacetime at the boundary. A solution can carry U(1) charge provided the spacetime torsion is non-vanishing. Thus, we analyze the most general configuration consistent with the local AdS isometries in Riemann-Cartan space. The coupling of torsion in the action resembles that of the universal axion of string theory, and it is ultimately due to this field that the theory acquires propagating degrees of freedom. Through a careful analysis of the canonical structure the local degrees of freedom of the theory are identified in the static symmetric sector of phase space.

Hairy black holes sourced by a conformally coupled scalar field in D dimensions

There exist well-known no-hair theorems forbidding the existence of hairy black hole solutions in general relativity coupled to a scalar conformal field theory in asymptotically flat space. Even in the presence of cosmological constant, where no-hair theorems can usually be circumvented and black holes with conformal scalar hair were shown to exist in dimensions three and four, no-go results were reported for D>4. In this paper we prove that these obstructions can be evaded and we answer in the affirmative a question that remained open: Whether hairy black holes do exist in general relativity sourced by a conformally coupled scalar field in arbitrary dimensions. We find the analytic black hole solution in arbitrary dimension D>4, which exhibits a backreacting scalar hair that is regular everywhere outside and on the horizon. The metric asymptotes to (Anti-)de Sitter spacetime at large distance and admits spherical horizon as well as horizon of a different topology. We also find analytic solutions when higher-curvature corrections O(R^n) of arbitrary order n are included in the gravity action.

New type of phase transition in gravitational theories

We set forth a new type of phase transition that might take place in gravitational theories whenever higher-curvature corrections are considered. It can be regarded as a sophisticated version of the Hawking-Page transition, mediated by the nucleation of a bubble in anti-de Sitter (AdS) space. The bubble hosts a black hole in its interior, and separates two spacetime regions with different effective cosmological constants. We compute the free energy of this configuration and compare it with that of thermal AdS. The result suggests that a phase transition actually occurs above certain critical temperature, ultimately changing the value of the cosmological constant. We discuss the consistency of the thermodynamic picture and its possible relevance in the context of AdS/CFT.

Quasilocal energy for three-dimensional massive gravity solutions with chiral deformations of AdS boundary conditions

We consider critical gravity in three dimensions; that is, the New Massive Gravity theory formulated about Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space with the specific value of the graviton mass for which it results dual to a two-dimensional conformal field theory with vanishing central charge. As it happens with Kerr black holes in four-dimensional critical gravity, in three-dimensional critical gravity the Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black holes have vanishing mass and vanishing angular momentum. However, provided suitable asymptotic conditions are chosen, the theory may also admit solutions carrying non-vanishing charges. Here, we give simple examples of exact solutions that exhibit falling-off conditions that are even weaker than those of the so-called Log-gravity. For such solutions, we define the quasilocal stress-tensor and use it to compute conserved charges. Despite the drastic deformation of AdS3 asymptotic, these solutions have finite mass and angular momentum.

The different phases of hairy black holes in AdS5 space

We investigate the thermodynamics of hairy black holes in asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space, including backreaction. Resorting to the Euclidean path integral approach, we show that matter conformally coupled to Einstein gravity in five dimensions may exhibit a phase transition whose endpoint turns out to be a hairy black hole in AdS5 space. The scalar field configuration happens to be regular everywhere outside and on the horizon, and behaves asymptotically in such a way that respects the AdS boundary conditions that are relevant for AdS/CFT. The theory presents other peculiar features in the ultraviolet, like the existence of black holes with arbitrarily low temperature in AdS5. This provides a simple setup in which the fully backreacting problem of a hair forming in AdS at certain critical temperature can be solved analytically.

Baby de Sitter Black Holes and dS$_3$/CFT$_2$

Unlike three-dimensional Einstein gravity, three-dimensional massive gravity admits asymptotically de Sitter space (dS) black hole solutions. These black holes present interesting features and provide us with toy models to study the dS/CFT correspondence. A remarkable property of these black holes is that they are always in thermal equilibrium with the cosmological horizon of the space that hosts them. This invites us to study the thermodynamics of these solutions within the context of dS/CFT. We study the asymptotic symmetry group of the theory and find that it indeed coincides with the local two-dimensional conformal algebra. The charge algebra associated to the asymptotic Killing vectors consists of two copies of the Virasoro algebra with non-vanishing central extension. We compute the mass and angular momentum of the dS black holes and verify that a naive application of Cardy's formula exactly reproduces the entropy of both the black hole and the cosmological horizon. By adapting the holographic renormalization techniques to the case of dS space, we define the boundary stress tensor of the dual Euclidean conformal field theory.

Generalized phase transitions in Lovelock gravity

We investigate a novel mechanism for phase transitions that is a distinctive feature of higher-curvature gravity theories. For definiteness, we bound ourselves to the case of Lovelock gravities. These theories are known to have several branches of asymptotically AdS solutions. Here, extending our previous work, we show that phase transitions among some of these branches are driven by a thermalon configuration: a bubble separating two regions of different effective cosmological constants, generically hosting a black hole in the interior. Above some critical temperature, this thermalon configuration is preferred with respect to the finite-temperature AdS space, triggering a sophisticated version of the Hawking-Page transition. After being created, the unstable bubble configuration can in general dynamically change the asymptotic cosmological constant. While this phenomenon already occurs in the case of a gravity action with square curvature terms, we point out that in the case of Lovelock theory with cubic (and higher) terms new effects appear. For instance, the theory may admit more than one type of bubble and branches that are in principle free of pathologies may also decay through the thermalon mechanism. We also find ranges of the gravitational couplings for which the theory becomes sick. These add up to previously found restrictions to impose tighter constraints on higher-curvature gravities. The results of this paper point to an intricate phase diagram which might accommodate similarly rich behavior in the dual CFT side.

Light-like Wilson loops in ABJM and maximal transcendentality

We revisit the computation of the two-loop light-like tetragonal Wilson loop for three dimensional pure Chern-Simons and N=6 Chern-Simons-matter theory, within dimensional regularization with dimensional reduction scheme. Our examination shows that, contrary to prior belief, the result respects maximal transcendentality as is the case of the four-point scattering amplitude of the theory. Remarkably, the corrected result matches exactly the scattering amplitude both in the divergent and in the finite parts, constants included.

On the description of surface operators in N=2* super Yang-Mills

In Ref. [arXiv:1005.4469], Alday and Tachikawa observed that the Nekrasov partition function of N=2 SU(2) superconformal gauge theories in the presence of fundamental surface operators can be associated to conformal blocks of a 2D CFT with affine sl(2) symmetry. This can be interpreted as the insertion of a fundamental surface operator changing the conformal symmetry from the Virasoro symmetry discovered in [arXiv:0906.3219] to the affine Kac-Moody symmetry. A natural question arises as to how such a 2D CFT description can be extended to the case of non-fundamental surface operators. Motivated by this question, we review the results of Refs. [arXiv:0706.1030] and [arXiv:0803.2099] and put them together to suggest a way to address the problem: It follows from this analysis that the expectation value of a non-fundamental surface operator in the SU(2) N=2* super Yang-Mills theory would be in correspondence with the expectation value of a single vertex operator in a two-dimensional CFT with reduced affine symmetry and whose central charge is parameterized by the integer number that labels the type of singularity of the surface operator.

On the Universality of Inner Black Hole Mechanics and Higher Curvature Gravity

Black holes are famous for their universal behavior. New thermodynamic relations have been found recently for the product of gravitational entropies over all the horizons of a given stationary black hole. This product has been found to be independent of the mass for all such solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory in d=4,5. We study the universality of this mass independence by introducing a number of possible higher curvature corrections to the gravitational action. We consider finite temperature black holes with both asymptotically flat and (A)dS boundary conditions. Although we find examples for which mass independence of the horizon entropy product continues to hold, we show that the universality of this property fails in general. We also derive further thermodynamic properties of inner horizons, such as the first law and Smarr relation, in the higher curvature theories under consideration, as well as a set of relations between thermodynamic potentials on the inner and outer horizons that follow from the horizon entropy product, whether or not it is mass independent.

The 1/2 BPS Wilson loop in ABJ(M) at two loops: The details

We compute the expectation value of the 1/2 BPS circular Wilson loop operator in ABJ(M) theory at two loops in perturbation theory. Our result turns out to be in exact agreement with the weak coupling limit of the prediction coming from localization, including finite N contributions associated to non-planar diagrams. It also confirms the identification of the correct framing factor that connects framing-zero and framing-one expressions, previously proposed. The evaluation of the 1/2 BPS operator is made technically difficult in comparison with other observables of ABJ(M) theory by the appearance of integrals involving the coupling between fermions and gauge fields, which are absent for instance in the 1/6 BPS case. We describe in detail how to analytically solve these integrals in dimensional regularization with dimensional reduction (DRED). By suitably performing the physical limit to three dimensions we clarify the role played by short distance divergences on the final result and the mechanism of their cancellation.

The large D limit of dimensionally continued gravity

In a recent paper [arXiv:1302.6382] Emparan, Suzuki, and Tanabe studied general relativity in the limit in which the number of spacetime dimensions D tends to infinity. They showed that, in such limit, the theory simplifies notably. It reduces to a theory whose fundamental objects, black holes and black branes, behave as non-interacting particles. Here, we consider a different way of extending gravity to D dimensions. We present a special limit of dimensionally continued gravity in which black holes retain their gravitational interaction at large D and still have entropy proportional to the mass. The similarities and differences with the limit considered in [arXiv:1302.6382] are discussed.

Critical gravity waves

Critical Gravity in D dimensions is discussed from the point of view of its exact solutions. The special features that certain type of solutions of higher-curvature gravity develop when one approaches the critical point of the parameter space are reviewed. In particular, a non-linear realization of the logarithmic modes of linearized Critical Gravity is seen to emerge as a peculiarity of the sector of anti-de Sitter wave solutions. Logarithmic solutions are shown to occur at a second point of the parameter space, at which the effective mass of the anti-de Sitter waves equals the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. Other type of solutions with anisotropic scale invariance are also discussed and the special features they develop at the critical point are studied as well. This note is the written version of the talk delivered by one of the authors at the 13th Marcel Grossmann Meeting on general relativity, held in Stockholm, Sweden, in July 2012. The proceeding contribution is based on authors' previous works.

Lifshitz black holes in Brans-Dicke theory

We present an exact asymptotically Lifshitz black hole solution in Brans-Dicke theory of gravity in arbitrary $n(\ge 3)$ dimensions in presence of a power-law potential. In this solution, the dynamical exponent $z$ is determined in terms of the Brans-Dicke parameter $ω$ and $n$. Asymptotic Lifshitz condition at infinity requires $z>1$, which corresponds to $-(n-1)/(n-2) \le ω< -n/(n-1)$. On the other hand, the no-ghost condition for the scalar field in the Einstein frame requires $0<z \le 2(n-2)/(n-3)$. We compute the Hawking temperature of the black hole solution and discuss the problems encountered and the proposals in defining its thermodynamic properties. A generalized solution charged under the Maxwell field is also presented.

Scalar field perturbations in asymptotically Lifshitz black holes

We consider scalar field perturbations about asymptotically Lifshitz black holes with dynamical exponent z in D dimensions. We show that, for suitable boundary conditions, these Lifshitz black holes are stable under scalar field perturbations. For z=2, we explicitly compute the quasinormal mode frecuencies, which result to be purely imaginary, and then obtain the damping-off of the scalar field perturbation in these backgrounds. The general analysis includes, in particular, the z=3 black hole solution of three-dimensional massive gravity.

Boundary stress tensor and asymptotically AdS3 non-Einstein spaces at the chiral point

Chiral gravity admits asymptotically AdS3 solutions that are not locally equivalent to AdS3; meaning that solutions do exist which, while obeying the strong boundary conditions usually imposed in General Relativity, happen not to be Einstein spaces. In Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG), the existence of non-Einstein solutions is particularly connected to the question about the role played by complex saddle points in the Euclidean path integral. Consequently, studying (the existence of) non-locally AdS3 solutions to chiral gravity is relevant to understand the quantum theory. Here, we discuss a special family of non-locally AdS3 solutions to chiral gravity. In particular, we show that such solutions persist when one deforms the theory by adding the higher-curvature terms of the so-called New Massive Gravity (NMG). Moreover, the addition of higher-curvature terms to the gravity action introduces new non-locally AdS3 solutions that have no analogues in TMG. Both stationary and time-dependent, axially symmetric solutions that asymptote AdS3 space without being locally equivalent to it appear. Defining the boundary stress-tensor for the full theory, we show that these non-Einstein geometries have associated vanishing conserved charges.

Boundary stress tensor and counterterms for weakened AdS_3 asymptotic in New Massive Gravity

Resorting to the notion of a stress tensor induced on the boundary of a spacetime, we compute the conserved charges associated to exact solutions of New Massive Gravity that obey weakened versions of AdS_3 asymptotic boundary conditions. The computation requires the introduction of additional counterterms, which play the role of regularizing the semiclassical stress tensor in the boundary theory. We show that, if treated appropriately, different ways of prescribing asymptotically AdS_3 boundary conditions yield finite conserved charges for the solutions. The consistency of the construction manifests itself in that the charges of hairy asymptotically AdS_3 black holes computed by this holography-inspired method exactly match the values required for the Cardy formula to reproduce the black hole entropy. We also consider new solutions to the equations of motion of New Massive Gravity, which happen to fulfill Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions despite not being Einstein manifolds. These solutions are shown to yield vanishing boundary stress tensor. The results obtained in this paper can be regarded as consistency checks for the prescription proposed in arXiv:1001.3598.

Deeper discussion of Schrödinger invariant and Logarithmic sectors of higher-curvature gravity

The aim of this paper is to explore D-dimensional theories of pure gravity whose space of solutions contains certain class of AdS-waves, including in particular Schrodinger invariant spacetimes. This amounts to consider higher order theories, and the natural case to start with is to analyze generic square-curvature corrections to Einstein-Hilbert action. In this case, the Schrodinger invariant sector in the space of solutions arises for a special relation between the coupling constants appearing in the action. On the other hand, besides the Schrodinger invariant configurations, logarithmic branches similar to those of the so-called Log-gravity are also shown to emerge for another special choice of the coupling constants. These Log solutions can be interpreted as the superposition of the massless mode of General Relativity and two scalar modes that saturate the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound (BF) of the AdS space on which they propagate. These solutions are higher-dimensional analogues of those appearing in three-dimensional massive gravities with relaxed AdS_3 asymptotic. Other sectors of the space of solutions of higher-curvature theories correspond to oscillatory configurations, which happen to be below the BF bound. Also, there is a fully degenerated sector, for which any wave profile is admitted. We comment on the relation between this degeneracy and the non-renormalization of the dynamical exponent of the Schrodinger spaces. Our analysis also includes more general gravitational actions with non-polynomial corrections consisting of arbitrary functions of the square-curvature invariants. The same sectors of solutions are shown to exist for this more general family of theories. We finally consider the Chern-Simons modified gravity in four dimensions, for which we derive both the Schrodinger invariant as well as the logarithmic sectors.

On the addition of torsion to chiral gravity

Three-dimensional gravity in Anti-de Sitter space is considered, including torsion. The derivation of the central charges of the algebra that generates the asymptotic isometry group of the theory is reviewed, and a special point of the theory, at which one of the central charges vanishes, is compared with the chiral point of topologically massive gravity. This special point corresponds to a singular point in Chern-Simons theory, where one of the two coupling constants of the SL(2,R) actions vanishes. A prescription to approach this point in the space of parameters is discussed, and the canonical structure of the theory is analyzed.

On the timelike Liouville three-point function

In a recent paper, D. Harlow, J. Maltz, and E. Witten showed that a particular proposal for the timelike Liouville three-point function, originally due to Al. Zamolodchikov and to I. Kostov and V. Petkova, can actually be computed by the original Liouville path integral evaluated on a new integration cycle. Here, we discuss a Coulomb gas computation of the timelike three-point function and show that an analytic extension of the Selberg type integral formulas involved reproduces the same expression, including the adequate normalization. A notable difference with the spacelike calculation is pointed out.

Analytic Lifshitz black holes in higher dimensions

We generalize the four-dimensional R^2-corrected z=3/2 Lifshitz black hole to a two-parameter family of black hole solutions for any dynamical exponent z and for any dimension D. For a particular relation between the parameters, we find the first example of an extremal Lifshitz black hole. An asymptotically Lifshitz black hole with a logarithmic decay is also exhibited for a specific critical exponent depending on the dimension. We extend this analysis to the more general quadratic curvature corrections for which we present three new families of higher-dimensional D>=5 analytic Lifshitz black holes for generic z. One of these higher-dimensional families contains as critical limits the z=3 three-dimensional Lifshitz black hole and a new z=6 four-dimensional black hole. The variety of analytic solutions presented here encourages to explore these gravity models within the context of non-relativistic holographic correspondence.

Counterterms in semiclassical Horava-Lifshitz gravity

We analyze the semiclassical Hořava-Lifshitz gravity for quantum scalar fields in 3+1 dimensions. The renormalizability of the theory requires that the action of the scalar field contains terms with six spatial derivatives of the field, i.e. in the UV, the classical action of the scalar field should preserve the anisotropic scaling symmetry ($t \to L^{2z}t,$ $\vec{x} \to L^2 \vec{x}$, with $z=3$) of the gravitational action. We discuss the renormalization procedure based on adiabatic subtraction and dimensional regularization in the weak field approximation. We verify that the divergent terms in the adiabatic expansion of the expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor of the scalar field contain up to six spatial derivatives, but do not contain more than two time derivatives. We compute explicitly the counterterms needed for the renormalization of the theory up to second adiabatic order and evaluate the associated $β$ functions in the minimal subtraction scheme.

Disk one-point function for non-rational conformal theories

We consider an infinite family of non-rational conformal field theories in the presence of a conformal boundary. These theories, which have been recently proposed in arXiv:0803.2099, are parameterized by two real numbers (b,m) in such a way that the corresponding central charges c_{b,m} are given by c_{b,m}=3+6(b+b^{-1}(1-m))^{2}. For the disk geometry, we explicitly compute the expectation value of a bulk vertex operator in the case m \in Z, such that the result reduces to the Liouville one-point function when m=0. We perform the calculation of the disk one-point function in two different ways, obtaining results in perfect agreement, and giving the details of both the path integral and the free field derivations.

Null geodesics and shadow of a rotating black hole in extended Chern-Simons modified gravity

The Chern-Simons modification to general relativity in four dimensions consists of adding to the Einstein-Hilbert term a scalar field that couples to the first class Pontryagin density. In this theory, which has attracted considerable attention recently, the Schwarzschild metric persists as an exact solution, and this is why this model resists several observational constraints. In contrast, the spinning black hole solution of the theory is not given by the Kerr metric but by a modification of it, so far only known for slow rotation and small coupling constant. In the present paper, we show that, in this approximation, the null geodesic equation can be integrated, and this allows us to investigate the shadow cast by a black hole. We discuss how, in addition to the angular momentum of the solution, the coupling to the Chern-Simons term deforms the shape of the shadow.

Bending AdS Waves with New Massive Gravity

We study AdS-waves in the three-dimensional new theory of massive gravity recently proposed by Bergshoeff, Hohm, and Townsend. The general configuration of this type is derived and shown to exhibit different branches, with different asymptotic behaviors. In particular, for the special fine tuning $m^2=\pm1/(2l^2)$, solutions with logarithmic fall-off arise, while in the range $m^2>-1/(2l^2)$, spacetimes with Schrodinger isometry group are admitted as solutions. Solutions that are asymptotically AdS$_3$, both for Brown-Henneaux and for the weakened boundary conditions, are also identified. The metric function that characterizes the profile of the AdS-wave behaves as a massive excitation on the spacetime, with an effective mass given by $m_{eff}^2=m^2-1/(2l^2)$. For the critical value $m^2=-1/(2l^2)$, the value of the effective mass precisely saturates the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound for the AdS$_3$ space where the wave is propagating on. The analogies with the AdS-wave solutions of topologically massive gravity are also discussed. Besides, we consider the coupling of both massive deformations to Einstein gravity and find the exact configurations for the complete theory, discussing all the different branches exhaustively. One of the effects of introducing the Chern-Simons gravitational term is that of breaking the degeneracy in the effective mass of the generic modes of pure New Massive Gravity, producing a fine structure due to parity violation. Another effect is that the zoo of exact logarithmic specimens becomes considerably enlarged.

Comment on three-point function in AdS(3)/CFT(2)

Recently, exact agreement has been found between bulk and boundary three-point functions in AdS_3 x S^3 x T^4 with NSNS fluxes. This represents a non-trivial check of AdS/CFT correspondence beyond the supergravity approximation as it corresponds to an exact worldsheet computation. When taking a closer look at this computation, one notices that a crucial point for the bulk-boundary agreement to hold is an intriguing mutual cancellation between worldsheet contributions corresponding to the AdS_3 and to the S^3 pieces of the geometry, what results in a simple factorized form for the final three-point function. In this note we review this cancellation and clarify some points about the analytic relation between the SU(2) and the SL(2,R) structure constants. In particular, we dicuss the connection to the Coulomb gas representation. We also make some comments on the four-point function.

Microscopic entropy of the three-dimensional rotating black hole of BHT massive gravity

Asymptotically AdS rotating black holes for the Bergshoeff-Hohm-Townsend (BHT) massive gravity theory in three dimensions are considered. In the special case when the theory admits a unique maximally symmetric solution, apart from the mass and the angular momentum, the black hole is described by an independent "gravitational hair" parameter, which provides a negative lower bound for the mass. This bound is saturated at the extremal case and, since the temperature and the semiclassical entropy vanish, it is naturally regarded as the ground state. The absence of a global charge associated with the gravitational hair parameter reflects through the first law of thermodynamics in the fact that the variation of this parameter can be consistently reabsorbed by a shift of the global charges, giving further support to consider the extremal case as the ground state. The rotating black hole fits within relaxed asymptotic conditions as compared with the ones of Brown and Henneaux, such that they are invariant under the standard asymptotic symmetries spanned by two copies of the Virasoro generators, and the algebra of the conserved charges acquires a central extension. Then it is shown that Strominger's holographic computation for general relativity can also be extended to the BHT theory; i.e., assuming that the quantum theory could be consistently described by a dual conformal field theory at the boundary, the black hole entropy can be microscopically computed from the asymptotic growth of the number of states according to Cardy's formula, in exact agreement with the semiclassical result.

On AGT description of N=2 SCFT with N_f=4

We consider Alday-Gaiotto-Tachikawa (AGT) realization of the Nekrasov partition function of N=2 SCFT. We focus our attention on the SU(2) theory with N_f=4 flavor symmetry, whose partition function, according to AGT, is given by the Liouville four-point function on the sphere. The gauge theory with N_f=4 is known to exhibit SO(8) symmetry. We explain how the Weyl symmetry transformations of SO(8) flavor symmetry are realized in the Liouville theory picture. This is associated to functional properties of the Liouville four-point function that are a priori unexpected. In turn, this can be thought of as a non-trivial consistency check of AGT conjecture. We also make some comments on elementary surface operators and WZW theory.

Langlands duality in Liouville-H_3^+ WZNW correspondence

We show a physical realization of the Langlands duality in correlation functions of H_3^+ WZNW model. We derive a dual version of the Stoyanovky-Riabult-Teschner (SRT) formula that relates the correlation function of the H_3^+ WZNW and the dual Liouville theory to investigate the level duality k-2 \to (k-2)^{-1} in the WZNW correlation functions. Then, we show that such a dual version of the H_3^+ - Liouville relation can be interpreted as a particular case of a biparametric family of non-rational CFTs based on the Liouville correlation functions, which was recently proposed by Ribault. We study symmetries of these new non-rational CFTs and compute correlation functions explicitly by using the free field realization to see how a generalized Langlands duality manifests itself in this framework. Finally, we suggest an interpretation of the SRT formula as realizing the Drinfeld-Sokolov Hamiltonian reduction. Again, the Hamiltonian reduction reveals the Langlands duality in the H_3^+ WZNW model. Our new identity for the correlation functions of H_3^+ WZNW model may yield a first step to understand quantum geometric Langlands correspondence yet to be formulated mathematically.

Topologically Massive Gravity at the Chiral Point is Not Unitary

A recent paper [arXiv:0801.4566] claims that topologically massive gravity contains only chiral boundary excitations at a particular value of the Chern-Simons coupling. On the other hand, propagating bulk degrees of freedom were found even at the chiral point in [arXiv:0803.3998]. The two references use very different methods, making comparison of their respective claims difficult. In this letter, we use the method of [arXiv:0801.4566] to construct a tower of propagating bulk states satisfying standard AdS boundary conditions. Our states have finite norm, with sign opposite to that of right-moving boundary excitations. Our results thus agree with [arXiv:0803.3998] and disagree with [arXiv:0801.4566].

Hoffmann-Infeld Black Hole Solutions in Lovelock Gravity

Five-dimensional black holes are studied in Lovelock gravity coupled to Hoffmann-Infeld non-linear electrodynamics. It is shown that some of these solutions present a double peak behavior of the temperature as a function of the horizon radius. This feature implies that the evaporation process, though drastic for a period, leads to an eternal black hole remnant. Moreover, the form of the caloric curve corresponds to the existence of a plateau in the evaporation rate, which implies that black holes of intermediate scales turn out to be unstable. The geometrical aspects, such as the absence of conical singularity, the structure of horizons, etc. are also discussed. In particular, solutions that are asymptotically AdS arise for special choices of the parameters, corresponding to charged solutions of five-dimensional Chern-Simons gravity.

Remarks on free field realization of SL(2,R)/U(1) x U(1) WZNW model

Free field representations of vertex algebra in SL(2,R)/U(1) x U(1) WZNW model are constructed by considering a twisted version of the Bershadsky-Kutasov free field description of discrete states in the two-dimensional black hole CFT. These correspond to conjugate representations describing primary states in the model on SL(2,R)/U(1) x U(1). A particular evaluation of these leads to identities due to the spectral flow symmetry of sl(2)_k algebra. The computation of correlation functions is discussed and, as an application, these are compared with analogous results known for the sine-Liouville theory. Exact agreement is observed between both analytic structures.

Zamolodchikov operator-valued relations for SL(2,R)_k WZNW model

An infinite set of operator-valued relations that hold for reducible representations of the sl(2)_k algebra is derived. These relations are analogous to those recently obtained by Zamolodchikov which involve logarithmic fields associated to the Virasoro degenerate representations in Liouville theory. The fusion rules of the sl(2)_k algebra turn out to be a crucial step in the analysis. The possible relevance of these relations for the boundary theory in the AdS_3/CFT_2 correspondence is suggested.
