Accelerated Black Holes beyond Maxwell's Electrodynamics

Theories of non-linear electrodynamics naturally describe deviations from Maxwell's theory in the strong field regime. Among these, of special interest is the recently discovered ModMax electrodynamics, which is a unique 1-parametric generalization of Maxwell's theory that possesses the conformal invariance as well as the electromagnetic duality. In this paper we construct the asymptotically AdS accelerated black holes in this theory and study their thermodynamics - providing thus a first example of accelerated solutions coupled to non-linear electrodynamics. Our study opens a window towards studying radiative spacetimes in non-linear electromagnetic regime as well as raises new challenges for their corresponding holographic interpretation.

Exact scalar (quasi-)normal modes of black holes and solitons in gauged SUGRA

In this paper we identify a new family of black holes and solitons that lead to the exact integration of scalar probes, even in the presence of a non-minimal coupling with the Ricci scalar which has a non-trivial profile. The backgrounds are planar and spherical black holes as well as solitons of $SU\left( 2\right) \times SU\left( 2\right) $ $\mathcal{N}=4$ gauged supergravity in four dimensions. On these geometries, we compute the spectrum of (quasi-)normal modes for the non-minimally coupled scalar field. We find that the equation for the radial dependence can be integrated in terms of hypergeometric functions leading to an exact expression for the frequencies. The solutions do not asymptote to a constant curvature spacetime, nevertheless the asymptotic region acquires an extra conformal Killing vector. For the black hole, the scalar probe is purely ingoing at the horizon, and requiring that the solutions lead to an extremum of the action principle we impose a Dirichlet boundary condition at infinity. Surprisingly, the quasinormal modes do not depend on the radius of the black hole, therefore this family of geometries can be interpreted as isospectral in what regards to the wave operator non-minimally coupled to the Ricci scalar. We find both purely damped modes, as well as exponentially growing unstable modes depending on the values of the non-minimal coupling parameter. For the solitons we show that the same integrability property is achieved separately in a non-supersymmetric solutions as well as for the supersymmetric one. Imposing regularity at the origin and a well defined extremum for the action principle we obtain the spectra that can also lead to purely oscillatory modes as well as to unstable scalar probes, depending on the values of the non-minimal coupling.

Hairy Black holes in General Minimal Massive Gravity

In this work, we investigate the near horizon and asymptotic symmetries of static and rotating hairy$-$AdS black hole in the framework of general minimal massive gravity. We obtain energy, angular momentum and entropy of the solutions. Then we show that our results for these quantities are consistent with the first law of black hole thermodynamics. By considering the near horizon geometry of black hole, we find near horizon conserved charges and their algebra. By writing the algebra of conserved charges in terms of Fourier modes we have obtained the conserved charges in terms of zero modes.

New BPS solitons in N=4 gauged supergravity and black holes in Einstein-Yang-Mills-dilaton theory

We start by revisiting the problem of finding BPS solutions in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SU(2)$\times$SU(2) gauged supergravity. We report on a new supersymmetric solution in the Abelian sector of the theory, which describes a soliton that is regular everywhere. The solution is 1/4 BPS and can be obtained from a double analytic continuation of a planar solution found by Klemm in hep-th/9810090. Also in the Abelian sector, but now for a spherically symmetric ansatz we find a new solution whose supersymmetric nature was overlooked in the previous literature. Then, we move to the non-Abelian sector of the theory by considering the meron ansatz for SU(2). We construct electric-meronic and double-meron solutions and show that the latter also leads to 1/4 BPS configurations that are singular and acquire an extra conformal Killing vector. We then move beyond the supergravity embedding of this theory by modifying the self-interaction of the scalar, but still within the same meron ansatz for a single gauge field, which is dilatonically coupled with the scalar. We construct exact black holes for two families of self-interactions that admit topologically Lifshitz black holes, as well as other black holes with interesting causal structures and asymptotic behavior. We analyze some thermal properties of these spacetimes.

Non-linear charged planar black holes in four-dimensional Scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories

In this work, we consider the recently proposed well-defined theory that permits a healthy $D\to 4$ limit of the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet combination, which requires the addition of a scalar degree of freedom. We continue the construction of exact, hairy black hole solutions in this theory in the presence of matter sources, by considering a nonlinear electrodynamics source, constructed through the Plebański tensor and a precise structural function $\mathcal{H}(P)$. Computing the thermodynamic quantities with the Wald formalism, we identify a region in parameter space where the hairy black holes posses well-defined, non-vanishing, finite thermodynamic quantities, in spite of the relaxed asymptotic approach to planar AdS. We test its local stability under thermal and electrical fluctuations and we also show that a Smarr relation is satisfied for these black hole configurations.

Exact solutions for a ferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

On the two-dimensional non-linear $Σ$-model describing a ferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, we build three families of exact static solutions depending on a single Cartesian variable. One of them describes a clockwise helix configuration, that characterizes the ground state of the system. A second one corresponds to a counterclockwise helix, representing an excited state. These two families of solutions are parameterized by a continuous parameter that depends on the magnetic field and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling. Finally, the third family exists only for isolated values of the same parameter, corresponding to a discrete family of Viviani curves on the target sphere. The degeneracy of the resulting spectrum suggests that an approximate symmetry may emerge at specific values of the magnetic field, at which additional solutions could then exist.

Slowly rotating black holes in Quasi-topological gravity

While cubic Quasi-topological gravity is unique, there is a family of quartic Quasi-topological gravities in five dimensions. These theories are defined by leading to a first order equation on spherically symmetric spacetimes, resembling the structure of the equations of Lovelock theories in higher-dimensions, and are also ghost free around AdS. Here we construct slowly rotating black holes in these theories, and show that the equations for the off-diagonal components of the metric in the cubic theory are automatically of second order, while imposing this as a restriction on the quartic theories allows to partially remove the degeneracy of these theories, leading to a three-parameter family of Lagrangians of order four in the Riemann tensor. This shows that the parallel with Lovelock theory observed on spherical symmetry, extends to the realm of slowly rotating solutions. In the quartic case, the equations for the slowly rotating black hole are obtained from a consistent, reduced action principle. These functions admit a simple integration in terms of quadratures. Finally, in order to go beyond the slowly rotating regime, we explore the consistency of the Kerr-Schild ansatz in cubic Quasi-topological gravity. Requiring the spacetime to asymptotically match with the rotating black hole in GR, for equal oblateness parameters, the Kerr-Schild deformation of an AdS vacuum, does not lead to a solution for generic values of the coupling. This result suggests that in order to have solutions with finite rotation in Quasi-topological gravity, one must go beyond the Kerr-Schild ansatz.

Analytic self-gravitating $4$-Baryons, traversable NUT-AdS wormholes, flat space-time multi-Skyrmions at finite volume and a novel transition in the $SU(3)$-Skyrme model

We construct the first analytic self-gravitating Skyrmions with higher Baryon charge in four dimensions for the $SU(3)$-Skyrme-Einstein-$Λ$ theory by combining the generalized hedgehog ansatz with the approach developed by Balachandran et al. to describe the first (numerical) example of a non-embedded solution. These are genuine $SU(3)$ analytic solutions instead of trivial embeddings of $SU(2)$ into $SU(3)$ and its geometry is that of a Bianchi IX Universe. The Skyrme ansatz is chosen in such a way that the Skyrme field equations are identically satisfied in the sector with Baryon charge 4. The field equations reduce to a dynamical system for the three Bianchi IX scale factors. Particular solutions are explicitly analyzed. Traversable wormholes with NUT-AdS asymptotics supported by a topologically non-trivial $SU(3)$-sigma soliton are also constructed. The self-gravitating solutions admit also a suitable flat limit giving rise to Skyrmions of charge 4 confined in a box of finite volume maintaining the integrability of the $SU(3)$ Skyrme field equations. This formalism discloses a novel transition at finite Baryon density arising from the competition between embedded and non-embedded solutions in which the non-embedded solutions prevail at high density while are suppressed at low densities.

Lovelock black p-branes with fluxes

In this paper we construct compactifications of generic, higher curvature Lovelock theories of gravity over direct product spaces of the type $\mathcal{M}_D=\mathcal{M}_d \times \mathcal{S}^p $, with $D=d+p$ and $d\ge5$, where $\mathcal{S}^p$ represents an internal, Euclidean manifold of positive constant curvature. We show that this can be accomplished by including suitable non-minimally coupled $p-1$-form fields with a field strength proportional to the volume form of the internal space. We provide explicit details of this constructions for the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in $d+2$ and $d+3$ dimensions by using one and two-form fundamental fields, and provide as well the formulae that allows to construct the same family of compactification in any Lovelock theory from dimension $d+p$ to dimension $d$. These fluxed compactifications lead to an effective Lovelock theory on the compactfied manifold, allowing therefore to find, in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet case, black holes in the Boulware-Deser family.

Quadratic gravity and conformally coupled scalar fields

We construct black hole solutions in four-dimensional quadratic gravity, supported by a scalar field conformally coupled to quadratic terms in the curvature. The conformal matter Lagrangian is constructed with powers of traces of a conformally covariant tensor, which is defined in terms of the metric and a scalar field, and has the symmetries of the Riemann tensor. We find exact, neutral and charged, topological black hole solutions of this theory when the Weyl squared term is absent from the action functional. Including terms beyond quadratic order on the conformally covariant tensor, allows to have asymptotically de Sitter solutions, with a potential that is bounded from below. For generic values of the couplings we also show that static black hole solutions must have a constant Ricci scalar, and provide an analysis of the possible asymptotic behavior of both, the metric as well as the scalar field in the asymptotically AdS case, when the solutions match those of general relativity in vacuum at infinity. In this frame, the spacetime fulfils standard asymptotically AdS boundary conditions, and in spite of the non-standard couplings between the curvature and the scalar field, there is a family of black hole solutions in AdS that can be interpreted as localized objects. We also provide further comments on the extension of these results to higher dimensions.

Quasitopological electromagnetism and black holes

In this paper we extend the quasitopological electromagnetism, recently introduced by H.-S. Liu et al. [arXiv:1907.10876], to arbitrary dimensions by introducing a fundamental $p$-form field. This allows us to construct new dyonic black hole solutions in odd dimensions, as well as regular $D$-dimensional black holes and solitons. The three-dimensional system consists of a Maxwell field interacting with a scalar field, leading to a deformation of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole. We present the general formulas defining the black hole solutions in arbitrary dimensions in Lovelock theory and explore the thermal properties of the asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes in the gravitational framework of general relativity. In five dimensions, the latter black holes possess a rich phase space structure in the canonical ensemble, giving rise to as many as five different black hole phases at a fixed temperature, for a given range of the parameters.

Critical points of the Exotic Massive 3D Gravity

Exotic Massive 3D Gravity (EMG) is a higher order generalization of Topologically Massive Gravity. As in other theories of this sort, the conserved charges associated to the asymptotic diffeomorphisms that preserve the boundary conditions in AdS3 spacetime span two copies of the Virasoro algebra with non-vanishing central charges. Here, we discuss the values of these central charges and the corresponding conformal anomaly in relation to the phase space of the theory.

On four-dimensional Einsteinian gravity, quasitopological gravity, cosmology and black holes

We show that the combination of cubic invariants defining five-dimensional quasitopological gravity, when written in four dimensions, reduce to the version of four-dimensional Einsteinian gravity recently proposed by Arciniega, Edelstein & Jaime, that produces second order equations of motion in a FLRW ansatz, with a purely geometrical inflationary period. We introduce a quartic version of the four-dimensional Einsteinian theory with similar properties, and study its consequences. In particular we found that there exists a region on the space of parameters which allows for thermodynamically stable black holes, as well as a well-defined cosmology with geometrically driven inflation. We briefly discuss the cosmological inhomogeneities in this setup. We also provide a combination of quintic invariants with those properties.

Stabilizing Homogeneous Black Strings in AdS

It is known that homogenous black strings in flat spacetime are unstable under long wavelength perturbations. Recently, by including scalar fields that depend on the extended coordinates only, homogenous black strings have been constructed in the presence of a negative cosmological constant, therefore implying that generic perturbations will contain both metric and scalar fluctuations. Here we show that for such generic perturbations homogeneous black strings with a negative cosmological constant are perturbatively stable at linear level, regardless the size of the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole located on the brane.

Black hole thermodynamics, conformal couplings, and R^2 terms

Lovelock theory provides a tractable model of higher-curvature gravity in which several questions can be studied analytically. This is the reason why, in the last years, this theory has become the favorite arena to study the effects of higher-curvature terms in the context of AdS/CFT correspondence. Lovelock theory also admits extensions that permit to accommodate matter coupled to gravity in a non-minimal way. In this setup, problems such as the backreaction of matter on the black hole geometry can also be solved exactly. In this paper, we study the thermodynamics of black holes in theories of gravity of this type, which include both higher-curvature terms, U(1) gauge fields, and conformal couplings with matter fields in D dimensions. These charged black hole solutions exhibit a backreacting scalar field configuration that is regular everywhere outside and on the horizon, and may exist both in asymptotically flat and asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spaces. We work out explicitly the boundary action for this theory, which renders the variational problem well-posed and suffices to regularize the Euclidean action in AdS. We also discuss several interrelated properties of the theory, such as its duality symmetry under field redefinition and how it acts on black holes and gravitational wave solutions.

Chemical potential driven phase transition of black holes in AdS space

Einstein-Maxwell theory conformally coupled to a scalar field in D dimensions may exhibit an instability at low temperature. We find an explicit solution that represents a charged asymptotically Anti-de Sitter black hole with a scalar field profile that is regular everywhere outside and on the horizon. This provides a tractable model to study the phase transition of hairy black holes in Anti-de Sitter space in which the backreaction on the geometry can be solved analytically.

Hairy Lovelock black holes and Stueckelberg mechanism for Weyl symmetry

Lovelock theory of gravity -and, in particular, Einstein theory- admits black hole solutions that can be equipped with a hair by conformally coupling the theory to a real scalar field. This is a secondary hair, meaning that it does not endow the black hole with new quantum numbers. It rather consists of a non-trivial scalar field profile of fixed intensity which turns out to be regular everywhere outside and on the horizon and, provided the cosmological constant is negative, behaves at large distance in a way compatible with the Anti-de Sitter (AdS) asymptotic. In this paper, we review the main features of these hairy black hole solutions, such as their geometrical and thermodynamical properties. The conformal coupling to matter in dimension $D>4$ in principle includes higher-curvature terms. These couplings are obtained from the Lovelock action through the Stueckelberg strategy. As a consequence, the resulting scalar-tensor theory exhibits a self-duality under field redefinition that resembles T-duality. Through this field redefinition, the matter content of the theory transforms into a Lovelock action for a dual geometry. Since the hairy black holes only exist for special relations between the dual Lovelock coupling constants, it is natural to compare those relations with the causality bounds coming from AdS/CFT. We observe that, while the lower causality bound is always obeyed, the upper causality bound is violated. The latter, however, is saturated in the large $D$ limit.

Instability of black strings in third-order Lovelock theory

We show that homogeneous black strings of third-order Lovelock theory are unstable under s-wave perturbations. This analysis is done in dimension $D=9$, which is the lowest dimension that allows the existence of homogeneous black strings in a theory that contains only the third-order Lovelock term in the Lagrangian. As is the case in general relativity, the instability is produced by long wavelength perturbations and it stands for the perturbative counterpart of a thermal instability. We also provide a comparative analysis of the instabilities of black strings at a fixed radius in general relativity, Gauss-Bonnet and third-order Lovelock theory. We show that the minimum critical wavelength that triggers the instability grows with the power of the curvature defined in the Lagrangian. The maximum exponential growth during the time of the perturbation is the largest in general relativity and it decreases with the number of curvatures involved in the Lagrangian.

Static and rotating solutions for Vector-Galileon theories

We consider a particular truncation of the generalized Proca field theory in four dimensions for which we construct a static and axisymmetric rotating black hole "stealth solutions", namely solutions with (Anti) de Sitter or Kerr metric but non-trivial vector field. The static configuration is promoted to a backreacting black hole with asymptotic (Anti) de Sitter behavior by turning on a nonlinear electrodynamic source given as a fixed power of the Maxwell invariant. Finally we extend our solutions to arbitrary dimensions.

Black Strings in Gauss-Bonnet Theory are Unstable

We report the existence of unstable, s-wave modes, for black strings in Gauss-Bonnet theory (which is quadratic in the curvature) in seven dimensions. This theory admits analytic uniform black strings that in the transverse section are black holes of the same Gauss-Bonnet theory in six dimensions. All the components of the perturbation can be written in terms of a single one and its derivatives. For this latter component we find a master equation which admits bounded solutions provided the characteristic time of the exponential growth of the perturbation is related with the wave number along the extra direction, as it occurs in General-Relativity. It is known that these configurations suffer from a thermal instability, and therefore the results presented here provide evidence for the Gubser-Mitra conjecture in the context of Gauss-Bonnet theory. Due to the non-triviality of the curvature of the background, all the components of the metric perturbation appear in the linearized equations. As it occurs for spherical black holes, these black strings should be obtained as the short distance $r<<α^{1/2}$ limit of the black string solution of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory, which is not know analytically, where $α$ is the Gauss-Bonnet coupling.

Exact solutions in $\mathcal{R}^{2}$ SUGRA

This letter is devoted to show that the bosonic sector of the $\mathcal{R}^{2}$-SUGRA in four dimensions, constructed with the F-term, admits a variety of exact and analytic solutions which include, pp- and AdS waves, asymptotically flat and AdS black holes and wormholes, as well as product spacetimes. The existence of static black holes and wormholes implies that a combination involving the Ricci scalar plus the norm of the field strength of the auxiliary two-form $B_{μν}$, must be a constant. We focus on this sector of the theory which has two subsectors depending on whether such a combination vanishes or not.

Hairy Black Hole Stability in AdS, Quantum Mechanics on the Half-Line and Holography

We consider the linear stability of $4$-dimensional hairy black holes with mixed boundary conditions in Anti-de Sitter spacetime. We focus on the mass of scalar fields around the maximally supersymmetric vacuum of the gauged $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity in four dimensions, $m^{2}=-2l^{-2}$. It is shown that the Schrödinger operator on the half-line, governing the $S^{2}$, $H^{2}$ or $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ invariant mode around the hairy black hole, allows for non-trivial self-adjoint extensions and each of them correspons to a class of mixed boundary conditions in the gravitational theory. Discarding the self-adjoint extensions with a negative mode impose a restriction on these boundary conditions. The restriction is given in terms of an integral of the potential in the Schrödinger operator resembling the estimate of Simon for Schrödinger operators on the real line. In the context of AdS/CFT duality, our result has a natural interpretation in terms of the field theory dual effective potential.

Asymptotically locally AdS and flat black holes in Horndeski theory

In this paper we construct asymptotically locally AdS and flat black holes in the presence of a scalar field whose kinetic term is constructed out from a linear combination of the metric and the Einstein tensor. The field equations as well as the energy-momentum tensor are second order in the metric and the field, therefore the theory belongs to the ones defined by Horndeski. We show that in the presence of a cosmological term in the action, it is possible to have a real scalar field in the region outside the event horizon. The solutions are characterized by a single integration constant, the scalar field vanishes at the horizon and it contributes to the effective cosmological constant at infinity. We extend these results to the topological case. The solution is disconnected from the maximally symmetric AdS background, however, within this family there exits a gravitational soliton which is everywhere regular. This soliton is therefore used as a background to define a finite Euclidean action and to obtain the thermodynamics of the black holes. For a certain region in the space of parameters, the thermodynamic analysis reveals a critical temperature at which a Hawking-Page phase transition between the black hole and the soliton occurs. We extend the solution to arbitrary dimensions grater than four and show that the presence of a cosmological term in the action allows to consider the case in which the standard kinetic term for the scalar it's not present. In such scenario, the solution reduces to an asymptotically flat black hole.

Black holes in New Massive Gravity dressed by a (non)minimally coupled scalar field

We consider a self-interacting, massive scalar field (non)minimally coupled to new massive gravity in three dimensions. For this model, we first derive a family of black hole solutions depending on a unique integration constant and parameterized in terms of the nonminimal coupling parameter. Imposing the absence of naked singularities restricts the parameters in such a way that the field vanishes at infinity and fixes the metric to be asymptotically AdS. Within this family of solutions it is possible to find a black hole supported by a minimally coupled scalar field and therefore the existence of these solutions is not inherent to the presence of the nonminimal coupling. The Wald formula for the entropy, being proportional to the lapse function evaluated at the horizon, yields a zero entropy in spite of the fact that the solution has a non zero temperature. As a consequence, the unique integration constant may be interpreted as a sort of gravitational hair. As in the source free case, we show that the same field equations admit as well asymptotically Lifshitz black hole solutions in a different region of the space of parameters. These Lifshitz solutions are divided in three families for which all the parameters entering in the action may be expressed in term of the dynamical exponent.

Hairy black holes sourced by a conformally coupled scalar field in D dimensions

There exist well-known no-hair theorems forbidding the existence of hairy black hole solutions in general relativity coupled to a scalar conformal field theory in asymptotically flat space. Even in the presence of cosmological constant, where no-hair theorems can usually be circumvented and black holes with conformal scalar hair were shown to exist in dimensions three and four, no-go results were reported for D>4. In this paper we prove that these obstructions can be evaded and we answer in the affirmative a question that remained open: Whether hairy black holes do exist in general relativity sourced by a conformally coupled scalar field in arbitrary dimensions. We find the analytic black hole solution in arbitrary dimension D>4, which exhibits a backreacting scalar hair that is regular everywhere outside and on the horizon. The metric asymptotes to (Anti-)de Sitter spacetime at large distance and admits spherical horizon as well as horizon of a different topology. We also find analytic solutions when higher-curvature corrections O(R^n) of arbitrary order n are included in the gravity action.

The different phases of hairy black holes in AdS5 space

We investigate the thermodynamics of hairy black holes in asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space, including backreaction. Resorting to the Euclidean path integral approach, we show that matter conformally coupled to Einstein gravity in five dimensions may exhibit a phase transition whose endpoint turns out to be a hairy black hole in AdS5 space. The scalar field configuration happens to be regular everywhere outside and on the horizon, and behaves asymptotically in such a way that respects the AdS boundary conditions that are relevant for AdS/CFT. The theory presents other peculiar features in the ultraviolet, like the existence of black holes with arbitrarily low temperature in AdS5. This provides a simple setup in which the fully backreacting problem of a hair forming in AdS at certain critical temperature can be solved analytically.

Topological self-dual vacua of deformed gauge theories

We propose a deformation principle of gauge theories in three dimensions that can describe topologically stable self-dual gauge fields, i.e., vacua configurations that in spite of their masses do not deform the background geometry and are locally undetected by charged particles. We interpret these systems as describing boundary degrees of freedom of a self-dual Yang-Mills field in $2+2$ dimensions with mixed boundary conditions. Some of these fields correspond to Abrikosov-like vortices with an exponential damping in the direction penetrating into the bulk. We also propose generalizations of these ideas to higher dimensions and arbitrary p-form gauge connections.

Exact meron Black Holes in four dimensional SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory

In this paper an intrinsically non-Abelian black hole solution for the SU(2) Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions is constructed. The gauge field of this solution has the form of a meron whereas the metric is the one of a Reissner-Nordström black hole in which, however, the coefficient of the $1/r^2$ term is not an integration constant. Even if the stress-energy tensor of the Yang-Mills field is spherically symmetric, the field strength of the Yang-Mills field itself is not. A remarkable consequence of this fact, which allows to distinguish the present solution from essentially Abelian configurations, is the Jackiw, Rebbi, Hasenfratz, 't Hooft mechanism according to which excitations of bosonic fields moving in the background of a gauge field with this characteristic behave as Fermionic degrees of freedom.

All the solutions of the form M2(warped)xΣ(d-2) for Lovelock gravity in vacuum in the Chern-Simons case

In this note we classify a certain family of solutions of Lovelock gravity in the Chern-Simons (CS) case, in arbitrary (odd) dimension greater than four. The spacetime is characterized by admitting a metric that is a warped product of a two-dimensional spacetime M2 and an (a priori) arbitrary Euclidean base manifold Sigma(d-2) of dimension d-2. We show that the solutions are naturally classified in terms of the equations that restrict the base manifold. According to the strength of such constraints we found the following branches in which Sigma(d-2) has to fulfill: a Lovelock equation with a single vacuum (Euclidean Lovelock Chern-Simons in dimension d-2), a single scalar equation that is the trace of an Euclidean Lovelock CS equation in dimension d-2, or finally a degenerate case in which the base manifold is not restricted at all. We show that all the cases have some degeneracy in the sense that the metric functions are not completely fixed by the field equations. This result extends the static five-dimensional case previously discussed in Phys.Rev. D76 (2007) 064038, and it shows that in the CS case, the inclusion of higher powers in the curvature does not introduce new branches of solutions in Lovelock gravity. Finally we comment on how the inclusion of a non-vanishing torsion and matter fields may modify this analysis.

Birkhoff's Theorem in Higher Derivative Theories of Gravity II: Asymptotically Lifshitz Black Holes

As a continuation of a previous work, here we examine the admittance of Birkhoff's theorem in a class of higher derivative theories of gravity. This class is contained in a larger class of theories which are characterized by the property that the trace of the field equations are of second order in the metric. The action representing these theories are given by a sum of higher curvature terms. Moreover the terms of a fixed order k in the curvature are constructed by taking a complete contraction of k conformal tensors. The general spherically (hyperbolic or plane) symmetric solution is then given by a static asymptotically Lifshitz black hole with the dynamical exponent equal to the spacetime dimensions. However, theories which are homogeneous in the curvature (i.e., of fixed order k) possess additional symmetry which manifests as an arbitrary conformal factor in the general solution. So, these theories are analyzed separately and have been further divided into two classes depending on the order and the spacetime dimensions.

Black Holes with Primary Hair in gauged N=8 Supergravity

In this paper, we analyze the static solutions for the $U(1)^{4}$ consistent truncation of the maximally supersymmetric gauged supergravity in four dimensions. Using a new parametrization of the known solutions it is shown that for fixed charges there exist three possible black hole configurations according to the pattern of symmetry breaking of the (scalars sector of the) Lagrangian. Namely a black hole without scalar fields, a black hole with a primary hair and a black hole with a secondary hair respectively. This is the first, exact, example of a black hole with a primary scalar hair, where both the black hole and the scalar fields are regular on and outside the horizon. The configurations with secondary and primary hair can be interpreted as a spontaneous symmetry breaking of discrete permutation and reflection symmetries of the action. It is shown that there exist a triple point in the thermodynamic phase space where the three solution coexist. The corresponding phase transitions are discussed and the free energies are written explicitly as function of the thermodynamic coordinates in the uncharged case. In the charged case the free energies of the primary hair and the hairless black hole are also given as functions of the thermodynamic coordinates.

Conformal couplings of a scalar field to higher curvature terms

We present a simple way of constructing conformal couplings of a scalar field to higher order Euler densities. This is done by constructing a four-rank tensor involving the curvature and derivatives of the field, which transforms covariantly under local Weyl rescalings. The equation of motion for the field, as well as its energy momentum tensor are shown to be of second order. The field equations for the spherically symmetric ansatz are integrated, and for generic non-homogeneous couplings, the solution is given in terms of a polynomial equation, in close analogy with Lovelock theories.

Exact Hairy Black Holes and their Modification to the Universal Law of Gravitation

In this paper two things are done. First, it is pointed out the existence of exact asymptotically flat, spherically symmetric black holes when a self interacting, minimally coupled scalar field is the source of the energy momentum of the Einstein equations in four dimensions. The scalar field potential is the recently found to be compatible with the hairy generalization of the Plebanski-Demianski solution of general relativity. This paper describes the spherically symmetric solutions that smoothly connect the Schwarzschild black hole with its hairy counterpart. The geometry and scalar field are everywhere regular except at the usual Schwarzschild like singularity inside the black hole. The scalar field energy momentum tensor satisfies the null energy condition in the static region of the spacetime. The first law holds when the parameters of the scalar field potential are fixed under thermodynamical variation. Secondly, it is shown that an extra, dimensionless parameter, present in the hairy solution, allows to modify the gravitational field of a spherically symmetric black hole in a remarkable way. When the dimensionless parameter is increased, the scalar field generates a flat gravitational potential, that however asymptotically matches the Schwarzschild gravitational field. Finally, it is shown that a positive cosmological constant can render the scalar field potential convex if the parameters are within a specific rank.

Scalar field perturbations in asymptotically Lifshitz black holes

We consider scalar field perturbations about asymptotically Lifshitz black holes with dynamical exponent z in D dimensions. We show that, for suitable boundary conditions, these Lifshitz black holes are stable under scalar field perturbations. For z=2, we explicitly compute the quasinormal mode frecuencies, which result to be purely imaginary, and then obtain the damping-off of the scalar field perturbation in these backgrounds. The general analysis includes, in particular, the z=3 black hole solution of three-dimensional massive gravity.

Birkhoff's Theorem in Higher Derivative Theories of Gravity

In this paper we present a class of higher derivative theories of gravity which admit Birkhoff's theorem. In particular, we explicitly show that in this class of theories, although generically the field equations are of fourth order, under spherical (plane or hyperbolic) symmetry, all the field equations reduce to second order and have exactly the same or similar structure to those of Lovelock theories, depending on the spacetime dimensions and the order of the Lagrangian.

Black holes with gravitational hair in higher dimensions

A new class of vacuum black holes for the most general gravity theory leading to second order field equations in the metric in even dimensions is presented. These space-times are locally AdS in the asymptotic region, and are characterized by a continuous parameter that does not enter in the conserve charges, nor it can be reabsorbed by a coordinate transformation: it is therefore a purely gravitational hair. The black holes are constructed as a warped product of a two-dimensional space-time, which resembles the r-t plane of the BTZ black hole, times a warp factor multiplying the metric of a D-2-dimensional Euclidean base manifold, which is restricted by a scalar equation. It is shown that all the Noether charges vanish. Furthermore, this is consistent with the Euclidean action approach: even though the black hole has a finite temperature, both the entropy and the mass vanish. Interesting examples of base manifolds are given in eight dimensions which are products of Thurston geometries, giving then a nontrivial topology to the black hole horizon. The possibility of introducing a torsional hair for these solutions is also discussed.

Gribov pendulum in the Coulomb gauge on curved spaces

In this paper the generalization of the Gribov pendulum equation in the Coulomb gauge for curved spacetimes is analyzed on static spherically symmetric backgrounds. A rigorous argument for the existence and uniqueness of solution is provided in the asymptotically AdS case. The analysis of the strong and weak boundary conditions is equivalent to analyzing an effective one-dimensional Schrodinger equation. Necessary conditions in order for spherically symmetric backgrounds to admit solutions of the Gribov pendulum equation representing copies of the vacuum satisfying the strong boundary conditions are given. It is shown that asymptotically flat backgrounds do not support solutions of the Gribov pendulum equation of this type, while on asymptotically AdS backgrounds such ambiguities can appear. Some physical consequences are discussed.

A new cubic theory of gravity in five dimensions: Black hole, Birkhoff's theorem and C-function

We present a new cubic theory of gravity in five dimensions which has second order traced field equations, analogous to BHT new massive gravity in three dimensions. Moreover, for static spherically symmetric spacetimes all the field equations are of second order, and the theory admits a new asymptotically locally flat black hole. Furthermore, we prove the uniqueness of this solution, study its thermodynamical properties, and show the existence of a C-function for the theory following the arguments of Anber and Kastor (arXiv:0802.1290 [hep-th]) in pure Lovelock theories. Finally, we include the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet and cosmological terms and we find new asymptotically AdS black holes at the point where the three maximally symmetric solutions of the theory coincide. These black holes may also possess a Cauchy horizon.

Classification of Six Derivative Lagrangians of Gravity and Static Spherically Symmetric Solutions

We classify all the six derivative Lagrangians of gravity, whose traced field equations are of second or third order, in arbitrary dimensions. In the former case, the Lagrangian in dimensions greater than six, reduces to an arbitrary linear combination of the six dimensional Euler density and the two linearly independent cubic Weyl invariants. In five dimensions, besides the independent cubic Weyl invariant, we obtain an interesting cubic combination, whose field equations for static spherically symmetric spacetimes are of second order. In the later case, in arbitrary dimensions we obtain two combinations, which in dimension three, are equivalent to the complete contraction of two Cotton tensors. Moreover, we also recover all the conformal anomalies in six dimensions. Finally, we present some static, spherically symmetric solutions for these Lagrangians.

Gravitationally induced zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov operator in the Coulomb gauge for Abelian gauge theories

It is shown that on curved backgrounds, the Coulomb gauge Faddeev-Popov operator can have zero modes even in the abelian case. These zero modes cannot be eliminated by restricting the path integral over a certain region in the space of gauge potentials. The conditions for the existence of these zero modes are studied for static spherically symmetric spacetimes in arbitrary dimensions. For this class of metrics, the general analytic expression of the metric components in terms of the zero modes is constructed. Such expression allows to find the asymptotic behavior of background metrics, which induce zero modes in the Coulomb gauge, an interesting example being the three dimensional Anti de-Sitter spacetime. Some of the implications for quantum field theory on curved spacetimes are discussed.

Gribov ambiguity in asymptotically AdS three-dimensional gravity

In this paper the zero modes of the de Donder gauge Faddeev-Popov operator for three dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant are analyzed. It is found that the three dimensional AdS vacuum produces (infinitely many) normalizable, smooth zero modes of the Faddeev-Popov operator. On the other hand, it is found that the BTZ black hole (including the zero mass black hole) does not generate zero modes. This differs from the usual Gribov problem in QCD where close to the maximally symmetric vacuum, the Faddeev-Popov determinant is positive definite while "far enough" from the vacuum it can vanish. This suggests that the zero mass BTZ black hole could be a suitable ground state of three dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant. Due to the kinematic origin of this result, it also applies for other covariant gravity theories in three dimensions with AdS_3 as maximally symmetric solution, such as new massive gravity and topologically massive gravity. The relevance of these results for SUSY breaking is pointed out.

Static solutions with nontrivial boundaries for the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in vacuum

The classification of certain class of static solutions for the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in vacuum is performed in $d\geq5$ dimensions. The class of metrics under consideration is such that the spacelike section is a warped product of the real line and an arbitrary base manifold. It is shown that for a generic value of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling, the base manifold must be necessarily Einstein, with an additional restriction on its Weyl tensor for $d>5$. The boundary admits a wider class of geometries only in the special case when the Gauss-Bonnet coupling is such that the theory admits a unique maximally symmetric solution. The additional freedom in the boundary metric enlarges the class of allowed geometries in the bulk, which are classified within three main branches, containing new black holes and wormholes in vacuum.

Microscopic entropy of the three-dimensional rotating black hole of BHT massive gravity

Asymptotically AdS rotating black holes for the Bergshoeff-Hohm-Townsend (BHT) massive gravity theory in three dimensions are considered. In the special case when the theory admits a unique maximally symmetric solution, apart from the mass and the angular momentum, the black hole is described by an independent "gravitational hair" parameter, which provides a negative lower bound for the mass. This bound is saturated at the extremal case and, since the temperature and the semiclassical entropy vanish, it is naturally regarded as the ground state. The absence of a global charge associated with the gravitational hair parameter reflects through the first law of thermodynamics in the fact that the variation of this parameter can be consistently reabsorbed by a shift of the global charges, giving further support to consider the extremal case as the ground state. The rotating black hole fits within relaxed asymptotic conditions as compared with the ones of Brown and Henneaux, such that they are invariant under the standard asymptotic symmetries spanned by two copies of the Virasoro generators, and the algebra of the conserved charges acquires a central extension. Then it is shown that Strominger's holographic computation for general relativity can also be extended to the BHT theory; i.e., assuming that the quantum theory could be consistently described by a dual conformal field theory at the boundary, the black hole entropy can be microscopically computed from the asymptotic growth of the number of states according to Cardy's formula, in exact agreement with the semiclassical result.

Stability of asymptotically AdS wormholes in vacuum against scalar field perturbations

The stability of certain class of asymptotically AdS wormholes in vacuum against scalar field perturbations is analyzed. For a free massive scalar field, the stability of the perturbation is guaranteed provided the squared mass is bounded from below by a negative quantity. Depending on the base manifold of the AdS asymptotics, this lower bound could be more stringent than the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. An exact expression for the spectrum is found analytically. For a scalar field perturbation with a nonminimal coupling, slow fall-off asymptotic behavior is also allowed, provided the squared mass fulfills certain negative upper bound. Although the Ricci scalar is not constant, an exact expression for the spectrum of the scalar field can also be found, and three different quantizations for the scalar field can be carried out. They are characterized by the fall-off of the scalar field, which can be fast or slow with respect to each asymptotic region. For these perturbations, stability can be achieved in a range of negative squared masses which depends on the base manifold of the AdS asymptotics. This analysis also extends to a class of gravitational solitons with a single conformal boundary.
