Conformal field theory complexity from Euler-Arnold equations

Defining complexity in quantum field theory is a difficult task, and the main challenge concerns going beyond free models and associated Gaussian states and operations. One take on this issue is to consider conformal field theories in 1+1 dimensions and our work is a comprehensive study of state and operator complexity in the universal sector of their energy-momentum tensor. The unifying conceptual ideas are Euler-Arnold equations and their integro-differential generalization, which guarantee well-posedness of the optimization problem between two generic states or transformations of interest. The present work provides an in-depth discussion of the results reported in arXiv:2005.02415 and techniques used in their derivation. Among the most important topics we cover are usage of differential regularization, solution of the integro-differential equation describing Fubini-Study state complexity and probing the underlying geometry.

Geometry of Complexity in Conformal Field Theory

We initiate quantitative studies of complexity in (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theories with a view that they provide the simplest setting to find a gravity dual to complexity. Our work pursues a geometric understanding of complexity of conformal transformations and embeds Fubini-Study state complexity and direct counting of stress tensor insertion in the relevant circuits in a unified mathematical language. In the former case, we iteratively solve the emerging integro-differential equation for sample optimal circuits and discuss the sectional curvature of the underlying geometry. In the latter case, we recognize that optimal circuits are governed by Euler-Arnold type equations and discuss relevant results for three well-known equations of this type in the context of complexity.

Discrete scale invariance in holography and an argument against the complexity=action proposal

The AdS/CFT correspondence often motivates research on questions in gravitational physics whose relevance might not be immediately clear from a purely GR-perspective, but which are nevertheless interesting. In these proceedings, we summarise two such results recently obtained by the author. One concerns, broadly speaking, the possible isometry-groups of a spacetime sourced by physical matter. The other one provides a possible argument against the recently proposed complexity=action conjecture.

Bending branes for DCFT in two dimensions

We consider a holographic dual model for defect conformal field theories (DCFT) in which we include the backreaction of the defect on the dual geometry. In particular, we consider a dual gravity system in which a two-dimensional hypersurface with matter fields, the brane, is embedded into a three-dimensional asymptotically Anti-de Sitter spacetime. Motivated by recent proposals for holographic duals of boundary conformal field theories (BCFT), we assume the geometry of the brane to be determined by Israel junction conditions. We show that these conditions are intimately related to the energy conditions for the brane matter fields, and explain how these energy conditions constrain the possible geometries. This has implications for the holographic entanglement entropy in particular. Moreover, we give exact analytical solutions for the case where the matter content of the brane is a perfect fluid, which in a particular case corresponds to a free massless scalar field. Finally, we describe how our results may be particularly useful for extending a recent proposal for a holographic Kondo model.

Entanglement Entropy in a Holographic Kondo Model

We calculate entanglement and impurity entropies in a recent holographic model of a magnetic impurity interacting with a strongly coupled system. There is an RG flow to an IR fixed point where the impurity is screened, leading to a decrease in impurity degrees of freedom. This information loss corresponds to a volume decrease in our dual gravity model, which consists of a codimension one hypersurface embedded in a BTZ black hole background in three dimensions. There are matter fields defined on this hypersurface which are dual to Kondo field theory operators. In the large N limit, the formation of the Kondo cloud corresponds to the condensation of a scalar field. The entropy is calculated according to the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription. This requires to determine the backreaction of the hypersurface on the BTZ geometry, which is achieved by solving the Israel junction conditions. We find that the larger the scalar condensate gets, the more the volume of constant time slices in the bulk is reduced, shortening the bulk geodesics and reducing the impurity entropy. This provides a new non-trivial example of an RG flow satisfying the g-theorem. Moreover, we find explicit expressions for the impurity entropy which are in agreement with previous field theory results for free electrons. This demonstrates the universality of perturbing about an IR fixed point.

Conditions on holographic entangling surfaces in higher curvature gravity

We study the extremal surfaces of functionals recently proposed for the holographic calculation of entanglement entropy in general higher curvature theories, using New Massive gravity and Gauss-Bonnet gravity as concrete examples. We show that the entropy functionals admit closed extremal surfaces, which for black hole backgrounds can encircle the event horizon of the black hole. In the examples considered, such closed surfaces correspond to a lower value of the entropy functional than expected from CFT calculations, implying a seeming mismatch between the bulk and boundary calculations. For Lorentzian settings we show that this problem can be resolved by imposing a causality constraint on the extremal surfaces. The possibility of deriving conditions from an alternative conical boundary condition method as proposed by Lewkowycz and Maldacena is explored.

Dynamical Black Holes in 2+1 Dimensions

We investigate the global structure of a recently discovered simple exact, non-stationary solution of topologically massive and new massive gravity with the asymptotic charges of an undeformed BTZ black hole. We establish the existence of a timelike singularity in the causal structure of the spacetime even in the absence of angular momentum. The dynamical trapping and event horizons are determined and we investigate the evolution of the outer horizon showing that it may increase or decrease with time, depending on the value of the mass parameter. Finally, we test two proposals for dynamical entropy on this solution, one of them depending on the Kodama vector. In addition we show that the Kodama vector leads to the correct entropy for all stationary black holes in 2+1 dimensions.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love QFT

Lecture notes of a block course explaining why quantum field theory might be in a better mathematical state than one gets the impression from the typical introduction to the topic. It is explained how to make sense of a perturbative expansion that fails to converge and how to express Feynman loop integrals and their renormalization using the language of distribtions rather than divergent, ill-defined integrals.
