Spatial deterministic wave forecasting for nonlinear sea-states

We derive a simple algebraic form of the nonlinear wavenumber correction of surface gravity waves in deep water, based on temporal measurements of the water surface and the spatial Zakharov equation. This allows us to formulate an improvement over linear deterministic wave forecasting with no additional computational cost. Our new formulation is used to forecast both synthetically generated as well as experimentally measured seas, and shows marked improvements over the linear theory.

Hydrodynamic-colloidal interactions of an oil droplet and a membrane surface

Understanding the influence of hydrodynamic stresses and colloidal interactions between droplets and membranes will inform better engineered membrane surfaces and process conditions. Using a long-wave hydrodynamic description that incorporates wettability and electrostatic repulsion, we numerically investigate the influence of droplet shapes and membrane characteristics on the overall repulsion-attraction towards the membrane surface. A stability phase diagram classifies stable-unstable drop shapes and investigate whether there is reversible deposition of droplets onto the membrane.

Collapsed heteroclinic snaking near a heteroclinic chain in dragged meniscus problems

We study a liquid film that is deposited onto a flat plate that is inclined at a constant angle to the horizontal and is extracted from a liquid bath at a constant speed. We additionally assume that there is a constant temperature gradient along the plate that induces a Marangoni shear stress. We analyse steady-state solutions of a long-wave evolution equation for the film thickness. Using centre manifold theory, we first obtain an asymptotic expansion of solutions in the bath region. The presence of the temperature gradient significantly changes these expansions and leads to the presence of logarithmic terms that are absent otherwise. Next, we obtain numerical solutions of the steady-state equation and analyse the behaviour of the solutions as the plate velocity is changed. We observe that the bifurcation curve exhibits snaking behaviour when the plate inclination angle is beyond a certain critical value. Otherwise, the bifurcation curve is monotonic. The solutions along these curves are characterised by a foot-like structure that is formed close to the meniscus and is preceded by a thin precursor film further up the plate. The length of the foot increases along the bifurcation curve. Finally, we explain that the snaking behaviour of the bifurcation curves is caused by the existence of an infinite number of heteroclinic orbits close to a heteroclinic chain that connects in an appropriate three-dimensional phase space the fixed point corresponding to the precursor film with the fixed point corresponding to the foot and then with the fixed point corresponding to the bath.

Non-Equilibrium Gibbs' Criterion for Completely Wetting Volatile Liquids

During the spreading of a liquid over a solid substrate, the contact line can stay pinned at sharp edges until the contact angle exceeds a critical value. At (or sufficiently near) equilibrium, this is known as Gibbs' criterion. Here, we show both experimentally and theoretically that for completely wetting volatile liquids there also exists a dynamically-produced critical angle for depinning, which increases with the evaporation rate. This suggests that one may introduce a simple modification of the Gibbs' criterion for (de)pinning, that accounts for the non-equilibrium effect of evaporation.

Structural and dynamical characteristics of mesoscopic H$^+$[H$_2$O]$_n$ clusters

Structural and dynamical characteristics pertaining to the solvation of an excess proton in liquid-like nanoclusters of the type [H$_2$O]$_n$ are investigated using Molecular Dynamics experiments. Three different aggregate sizes were analyzed: $n=10,$ 21 and 125. The simulation experiments were performed using a multistate empirical valence bond Hamiltonian model. While in the smallest aggregates the proton occupies a central position, the stable solvation environments for $n=21$ and 125 are located at the cluster boundaries. In all cases, the structure of the closest solvation shell of the excess charge remains practically unchanged and coincides with that observed in bulk water. Compared to results obtained in bulk, the computed rates for proton transfer in clusters are between one and two orders of magnitude slower, and tend to increase for larger cluster sizes.
