Critical Effect of Bottom Electrode on Ferroelectricity of Epitaxial Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 Thin Films

Epitaxial orthorhombic Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (HZO) films on La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) electrodes show robust ferroelectricity, with high polarization, endurance and retention. However, no similar results have been achieved using other perovskite electrodes so far. Here, LSMO and other perovskite electrodes are compared. A small amount of orthorhombic phase and low polarization is found in HZO films grown on La-doped BaSnO3 and Nb-doped SrTiO3, while null amounts of orthorhombic phase and polarization are detected in films on LaNiO3 and SrRuO3. The critical effect of the electrode on the stabilized phases is not consequence of differences in the electrode lattice parameter. The interface is critical, and engineering the HZO bottom interface on just a few monolayers of LSMO permits the stabilization of the orthorhombic phase. Furthermore, while the specific divalent ion (Sr or Ca) in the manganite is not relevant, reducing the La content causes a severe reduction of the amount of orthorhombic phase and the ferroelectric polarization in the HZO film.

Interfacial-Redox-Induced Tuning of Superconductivity in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$

Solid state ionic approaches for modifying ion distributions in getter/oxide heterostructures offer exciting potentials to control material properties. Here we report a simple, scalable approach allowing for total control of the superconducting transition in optimally doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) films via a chemically-driven ionic migration mechanism. Using a thin Gd capping layer of up to 20 nm deposited onto 100 nm thick epitaxial YBCO films, oxygen is found to leach from deep within the YBCO. Progressive reduction of the superconducting transition is observed, with complete suppression possible for a sufficiently thick Gd layer. These effects arise from the combined impact of redox-driven electron doping and modification of the YBCO microstructure due to oxygen migration and depletion. This work demonstrates an effective ionic control of superconductivity in oxides, an interface induced effect that goes well into the quasi-bulk regime, opening up possibilities for electric field manipulation.

Unravelling Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and chiral nature of Graphene/Cobalt interface

A major challenge for future spintronics is to develop suitable spin transport channels with long spin lifetime and propagation length. Graphene can meet these requirements, even at room temperature. On the other side, taking advantage of the fast motion of chiral textures, i.e., Néel-type domain walls and magnetic skyrmions, can satisfy the demands for high-density data storage, low power consumption and high processing speed. We have engineered epitaxial structures where an epitaxial ferromagnetic Co layer is sandwiched between an epitaxial Pt(111) buffer grown in turn onto MgO(111) substrates and a graphene layer. We provide evidence of a graphene-induced enhancement of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy up to 4 nm thick Co films, and of the existence of chiral left-handed Néel-type domain walls stabilized by the effective Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in the stack. The experiments show evidence of a sizeable DMI at the gr/Co interface, which is described in terms of a conduction electron mediated Rashba-DMI mechanism and points opposite to the Spin Orbit Coupling-induced DMI at the Co/Pt interface. In addition, the presence of graphene results in: i) a surfactant action for the Co growth, producing an intercalated, flat, highly perfect fcc film, pseudomorphic with Pt and ii) an efficient protection from oxidation. The magnetic chiral texture is stable at room temperature and grown on insulating substrate. Our findings open new routes to control chiral spin structures using interfacial engineering in graphene-based systems for future spin-orbitronics devices fully integrated on oxide substrates.

Conducting interfaces between amorphous oxide layers and SrTiO3(110) and SrTiO3(111)

Interfaces between (110) and (111)SrTiO3 (STO) single crystalline substrates and amorphous oxide layers, LaAlO3 (a-LAO), Y:ZrO2 (a-YSZ), and SrTiO3 (a-STO) become conducting above a critical thickness tc. Here we show that tc for a-LAO is not depending on the substrate orientation, i.e. tc (a-LAO/(110)STO) ~ tc(a-LAO/(111)STO) interfaces, whereas it strongly depends on the composition of the amorphous oxide: tc(a-LAO/(110)STO) < tc(a-YSZ/(110)STO) < tc(a-STO/(110)STO). It is concluded that the formation of oxygen vacancies in amorphous-type interfaces is mainly determined by the oxygen affinity of the deposited metal ions, rather than orientational-dependent enthalpy vacancy formation and diffusion. Scanning transmission microscopy characterization of amorphous and crystalline LAO/STO(110) interfaces shows much higher amount of oxygen vacancies in the former, providing experimental evidence of the distinct mechanism of conduction in these interfaces.

Competition between covalent bonding and charge transfer at complex-oxide interfaces

Here we study the electronic properties of cuprate/manganite interfaces. By means of atomic resolution electron microscopy and spectroscopy, we produce a subnanometer scale map of the transition metal oxidation state profile across the interface between the high $T_c$ superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ and the colossal magnetoresistance compound (La,Ca)MnO$_3$. A net transfer of electrons from manganite to cuprate with a peculiar non-monotonic charge profile is observed. Model calculations rationalize the profile in terms of the competition between standard charge transfer tendencies (due to band mismatch), strong chemical bonding effects across the interface, and Cu substitution into the Mn lattice, with different characteristic length scales.

Conducting interfaces between band insulating oxides: the LaGaO3/SrTiO3

We show that the growth of the heterostructure LaGaO3/SrTiO3 yields the formation of a highly conductive interface. Our samples were carefully analyzed by high resolution electron microscopy, in order to assess their crystal perfection and to evaluate the abruptness of the interface. Their carrier density and sheet resistance are compared to the case of LaAlO3/SrTiO3 and a superconducting transition is found. The results open the route to widening the field of polar-non polar interfaces, pose some phenomenological constrains to their underlying physics and highlight the chance of tailoring their properties for future applications by adopting suitable polar materials.
