A convex analysis approach to entropy functions, variational principles and equilibrium states

The first aims of this work are to endorse the advent of finitely additive set functions as equilibrium states and the possibility to replace the metric entropy by an upper semi-continuous map associated to a general variational principle. More precisely, using methods from Convex Analysis, we construct for each generalized convex pressure function an upper semi-continuous entropy-like map (which, in the context of continuous transformations acting on a compact metric space and the topological pressure, turns out to be the upper semi-continuous envelope of the Kolmogorov-Sinai metric entropy), then establish a new abstract variational principle and prove that equilibrium states, possibly finitely additive, always exist. This conceptual approach provides a new insight on dynamical systems without a measure with maximal entropy, prompts the study of finitely additive ground states for non-uniformly hyperbolic maps and grants the existence of finitely additive Lyapunov equilibrium states for singular value potentials generated by linear cocycles over continuous maps. We further investigate several applications, including a new thermodynamic formalism for systems driven by finitely generated semigroup or countable sofic group actions. On the final pages of the manuscript we provide a list of open problems in a wide range of topics suggested by our main results.

COSMIC: fast closed-form identification from large-scale data for LTV systems

We introduce a closed-form method for identification of discrete-time linear time-variant systems from data, formulating the learning problem as a regularized least squares problem where the regularizer favors smooth solutions within a trajectory. We develop a closed-form algorithm with guarantees of optimality and with a complexity that increases linearly with the number of instants considered per trajectory. The COSMIC algorithm achieves the desired result even in the presence of large volumes of data. Our method solved the problem using two orders of magnitude less computational power than a general purpose convex solver and was about 3 times faster than a Stochastic Block Coordinate Descent especially designed method. Computational times of our method remained in the order of magnitude of the second even for 10k and 100k time instants, where the general purpose solver crashed. To prove its applicability to real world systems, we test with spring-mass-damper system and use the estimated model to find the optimal control path. Our algorithm was applied to both a Low Fidelity and Functional Engineering Simulators for the Comet Interceptor mission, that requires precise pointing of the on-board cameras in a fast dynamics environment. Thus, this paper provides a fast alternative to classical system identification techniques for linear time-variant systems, while proving to be a solid base for applications in the Space industry and a step forward to the incorporation of algorithms that leverage data in such a safety-critical environment.

Deep Aesthetic Assessment and Retrieval of Breast Cancer Treatment Outcomes

Treatments for breast cancer have continued to evolve and improve in recent years, resulting in a substantial increase in survival rates, with approximately 80\% of patients having a 10-year survival period. Given the serious impact that breast cancer treatments can have on a patient's body image, consequently affecting her self-confidence and sexual and intimate relationships, it is paramount to ensure that women receive the treatment that optimizes both survival and aesthetic outcomes. Currently, there is no gold standard for evaluating the aesthetic outcome of breast cancer treatment. In addition, there is no standard way to show patients the potential outcome of surgery. The presentation of similar cases from the past would be extremely important to manage women's expectations of the possible outcome. In this work, we propose a deep neural network to perform the aesthetic evaluation. As a proof-of-concept, we focus on a binary aesthetic evaluation. Besides its use for classification, this deep neural network can also be used to find the most similar past cases by searching for nearest neighbours in the highly semantic space before classification. We performed the experiments on a dataset consisting of 143 photos of women after conservative treatment for breast cancer. The results for accuracy and balanced accuracy showed the superior performance of our proposed model compared to the state of the art in aesthetic evaluation of breast cancer treatments. In addition, the model showed a good ability to retrieve similar previous cases, with the retrieved cases having the same or adjacent class (in the 4-class setting) and having similar types of asymmetry. Finally, a qualitative interpretability assessment was also performed to analyse the robustness and trustworthiness of the model.

Quantitative recurrence for free semigroup actions

We consider finitely generated free semigroup actions on a compact metric space and obtain quantitative information on Poincaré recurrence, average first return time and hitting frequency for the random orbits induced by the semigroup action. Besides, we relate the recurrence to balls with the rates of expansion of the semigroup's generators and the topological entropy of the semigroup action. Finally, we establish a partial variational principle and prove an ergodic optimization for this kind of dynamical action.

Extremal dichotomy for uniformly hyperbolic systems

We consider the extreme value theory of a hyperbolic toral automorphism $T: \mathbb{T}^2 \to \mathbb{T}^2$ showing that if a Hölder observation $ϕ$ which is a function of a Euclidean-type distance to a non-periodic point $ζ$ is strictly maximized at $ζ$ then the corresponding time series $\{ϕ\circ T^i\}$ exhibits extreme value statistics corresponding to an iid sequence of random variables with the same distribution function as $ϕ$ and with extremal index one. If however $ϕ$ is strictly maximized at a periodic point $q$ then the corresponding time-series exhibits extreme value statistics corresponding to an iid sequence of random variables with the same distribution function as $ϕ$ but with extremal index not equal to one. We give a formula for the extremal index (which depends upon the metric used and the period of $q$). These results imply that return times are Poisson to small balls centered at non-periodic points and compound Poisson for small balls centered at periodic points.

Dynamics of a quasi-quadratic map

We consider the map X defined on the rational numbers given by x --> x * ceil(x), where ceil(x) denotes the smallest integer greater than or equal to x, and study the problem of finding, for each rational, the smallest number of iterations of X that eventually sends it into an integer. Given two natural numbers M and n, we prove that the set of irreducible fractions with denominator M whose orbits by X reach an integer in exactly n iterations is a disjoint union of congruence classes modulo M^n, establishing along the way a finite procedure to ascertain them. We also describe an efficient algorithm to decide if an orbit fails to hit an integer until a prescribed number of iterations, and deduce that the probability that an orbit enters the set of integers is equal to one.

On the spectrum of infinite dimensional random products of compact operators

We consider an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space and its family of compact integrable cocycles over a dynamical system f. Assuming that f acts in a compact Hausdorff space X and preserves a Borel regular ergodic measure which is positive on non-empty open sets, we conclude that there is a residual subset of cocycles within which, for almost every x, either the Oseledets-Ruelle's decomposition along the orbit of x is dominated or has a trivial spectrum.
