Geometric limits of cyclic subgroups of SO_0(1, k+1) and SU(1, k+1)

We study geometric limits of convex-cocompact cyclic subgroups of the rank 1 groups SO_0(1, k+1) and SU(1, k+1). We construct examples of sequences of subgroups of such groups G that converge algebraically and whose geometric limit strictly contains the algebraic limit, thus generalizing the example first described by Jorgensen for subgroups of SO_0(1,3). We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for a subgroup of SO_0(1, k+1) to arise as geometric limit of a sequence of cyclic subgroups. We then discuss generalizations of such examples to sequence of representations of free groups, and applications of our constructions in that setting.

Maximal representations of complex hyperbolic lattices in SU(m,n)

Let $Γ$ denote a lattice in $SU(1,p)$, with $p$ greater than 1. We show that there exists no Zariski dense maximal representation with target $SU(m,n)$ if $n>m>1$. The proof is geometric and is based on the study of the rigidity properties of the geometry whose points are isotropic $m$-subspaces of a complex vector space $V$ endowed with a Hermitian metric $h$ of signature $(m,n)$ and whose lines correspond to the $2m$ dimensional subspaces of $V$ on which the restriction of $h$ has signature $(m,m)$.

Classification of tight homomorphisms

A totally geodesic map $f:\mathcal X_1\to\mathcal X_2$ between Hermitian symmetric spaces is tight if its image contains geodesic triangles of maximal area. Tight maps were first introduced in [BIW09], and were classified in [Ham13, Ham14, HO14] in the case of irreducible domain. We complete the classification by analyzing also maps from reducible domains. This has applications to the study of maximal representations and of the Hitchin component for representations in the groups $Sp(2n,\mathbb R)$.

Isometric Embeddings in Bounded Cohomology

This paper is devoted to the construction of norm-preserving maps between bounded cohomology groups. For a graph of groups with amenable edge groups we construct an isometric embedding of the direct sum of the bounded cohomology of the vertex groups in the bounded cohomology of the fundamental group of the graph of groups. With a similar technique we prove that if (X,Y) is a pair of CW-complexes and the fundamental group of each connected component of Y is amenable, the isomorphism between the relative bounded cohomology of (X,Y) and the bounded cohomology of X in degree at least 2 is isometric. As an application we provide easy and self-contained proofs of Gromov Equivalence Theorem and of the additivity of the simplicial volume with respect to gluings along π_1-injective boundary components with amenable fundamental group.

Isometric properties of relative bounded cohomology

We show that the isomorphism induced by the inclusion of pairs $(X,\emptyset)\subset (X,Y)$ between the relative bounded cohomology of $(X,Y)$ and the bounded cohomology of $X$ is isometric in degree at least 2 if the fundamental group of each connected component of $Y$ is amenable. As an application we provide a self-contained proof of Gromov Equivalence theorem and a generalization of a result of Fujiwara and Manning on the simplicial volume of generalized Dehn fillings.
