Integrality of Volumes of Representations

Let M be an oriented complete hyperbolic n-manifold of finite volume. Using the definition of volume of a representation previously given by the authors in [BucherBurgerIozzi2013] we show that the volume of a representation of the fundamental group of M into the connected component of the isometry group of hyperbolic n-space, properly normalized, takes integer values if n=2m is at least 4. If M is not compact and 3-dimensional, it is known that the volume is not locally constant. In this case we give explicit examples of representations with volume as arbitrary as the volume of hyperbolic manifolds obtained from M via Dehn fillings.

The simplicial volume of mapping tori of 3-manifolds

We prove that any mapping torus of a closed 3-manifold has zero simplicial volume. When the fiber is a prime 3-manifold, classification results can be applied to show vanishing of the simplicial volume, however the case of reducible fibers is by far more subtle. We thus analyse the possible self-homeomorphisms of reducible 3-manifolds, and use this analysis to produce an explicit representative of the fundamental class of the corresponding mapping tori. To this end, we introduce a new technique for understanding self-homeomorphisms of connected sums in arbitrary dimensions on the level of classifying spaces and for computing the simplicial volume. In particular, we extend our computations to mapping tori of certain connected sums in higher dimensions. Our main result completes the picture for the vanishing of the simplicial volume of fiber bundles in dimension four. Moreover, we deduce that dimension four together with the trivial case of dimension two are the only dimensions where all mapping tori have vanishing simplicial volume. As a group theoretic consequence, we derive an alternative proof of the fact that the fundamental group $G$ of a mapping torus of a 3-manifold $M$ is Gromov hyperbolic if and only if $M$ is virtually a connected sum $\# S^2\times S^1$ and $G$ does not contain $\mathbb{Z}^2$.

A quantitative version of a theorem by Jungreis

A fundamental result by Gromov and Thurston asserts that, if M is a closed hyperbolic n-manifold, then the simplicial volume |M| of M is equal to vol(M)/v_n, where v_n is a constant depending only on the dimension of M. The same result also holds for complete finite-volume hyperbolic manifolds without boundary, while Jungreis proved that the ratio vol(M)/|M| is strictly smaller than v_n if M is compact with non-empty geodesic boundary. We prove here a quantitative version of Jungreis' result for n>3, which bounds from below the ratio |M|/vol(M) in terms of the ratio between the volume of the boundary of M and the volume of M. As a consequence, we show that a sequence {M_i} of compact hyperbolic n-manifolds with geodesic boundary is such that the limit of vol(M_i)/|M_i| equals v_n if and only if the volume of the boundary of M_i grows sublinearly with respect to the volume of the boundary of M_i. We also provide estimates of the simplicial volume of hyperbolic manifolds with geodesic boundary in dimension three.

Minimal exponential growth rates of metabelian Baumslag-Solitar groups and lamplighter groups

We prove that for any prime $p\geq 3$ the minimal exponential growth rate of the Baumslag-Solitar group $BS(1,p)$ and the lamplighter group $\mathcal{L}_p=(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})\wr \mathbb{Z}$ are equal. We also show that for $p=2$ this claim is not true and the growth rate of $BS(1,2)$ is equal to the positive root of $x^3-x^2-2$, whilst the one of the lamplighter group $\mathcal{L}_2$ is equal to the golden ratio $(1+\sqrt5)/2$. The latter value also serves to show that the lower bound of A.Mann from [Mann, Journal of Algebra 326, no. 1 (2011) 208--217] for the growth rates of non-semidirect HNN extensions is optimal.

Isometric Embeddings in Bounded Cohomology

This paper is devoted to the construction of norm-preserving maps between bounded cohomology groups. For a graph of groups with amenable edge groups we construct an isometric embedding of the direct sum of the bounded cohomology of the vertex groups in the bounded cohomology of the fundamental group of the graph of groups. With a similar technique we prove that if (X,Y) is a pair of CW-complexes and the fundamental group of each connected component of Y is amenable, the isomorphism between the relative bounded cohomology of (X,Y) and the bounded cohomology of X in degree at least 2 is isometric. As an application we provide easy and self-contained proofs of Gromov Equivalence Theorem and of the additivity of the simplicial volume with respect to gluings along π_1-injective boundary components with amenable fundamental group.

A Dual Interpretation of the Gromov--Thurston Proof of Mostow Rigidity and Volume Rigidity for Representations of Hyperbolic Lattices

We use bounded cohomology to define a notion of volume of an SO(n,1)-valued representation of a lattice SO(n,1) and, using this tool, we give a complete proof of the volume rigidity theorem of Francaviglia and Klaff in this setting. Our approach gives in particular a proof of Thurston's version of Gromov's proof of Mostow Rigidity (also in the non-cocompact case), which is dual to the Gromov--Thurston proof using the simplicial volume invariant.}

Exponential growth rates of free and amalgamated products

We prove that there is a gap between $\sqrt{2}$ and $(1+\sqrt{5})/2$ for the exponential growth rate of free products $G=A*B$ not isomorphic to the infinite dihedral group. For amalgamated products $G=A*_C B$ with $([A:C]-1)([B:C]-1)\geq2$, we show that lower exponential growth rate than $\sqrt{2}$ can be achieved by proving that the exponential growth rate of the amalgamated product $\mathrm{PGL}(2,\mathbb{Z})\cong (C_2\times C_2) *_{C_2} D_6$ is equal to the unique positive root of the polynomial $z^3-z-1$. This answers two questions by Avinoam Mann [The growth of free products, Journal of Algebra 326, no. 1 (2011) 208--217].

Isometric properties of relative bounded cohomology

We show that the isomorphism induced by the inclusion of pairs $(X,\emptyset)\subset (X,Y)$ between the relative bounded cohomology of $(X,Y)$ and the bounded cohomology of $X$ is isometric in degree at least 2 if the fundamental group of each connected component of $Y$ is amenable. As an application we provide a self-contained proof of Gromov Equivalence theorem and a generalization of a result of Fujiwara and Manning on the simplicial volume of generalized Dehn fillings.

Proportionality principle for the simplicial volume of families of Q-rank 1 locally symmetric spaces

We establish the proportionality principle between the Riemannian volume and locally finite simplicial volume for Q-rank 1 locally symmetric spaces covered by products of hyperbolic spaces, giving the first examples for manifolds whose cusp groups are not necessarily amenable. Also, we give a simple direct proof of the proportionality principle for the locally finite simplicial volume and the relative simplicial volume of Q-rank 1 locally symmetric spaces with amenable cusp groups established by Löh and Sauer.

The norm of the Euler class

We prove that the norm of the Euler class E for flat vector bundles is $2^{-n}$ (in even dimension $n$, since it vanishes in odd dimension). This shows that the Sullivan--Smillie bound considered by Gromov and Ivanov--Turaev is sharp. We construct a new cocycle representing E and taking only the two values $\pm 2^{-n}$; a null-set obstruction prevents any cocycle from existing on the projective space. We establish the uniqueness of an antisymmetric representative for E in bounded cohomology.
