Beyond Hubbard: the role of correlated hopping interaction in superconductors and quantum dot devices

We investigate the role of strong Coulomb interactions beyond the standard Hubbard model in two distinct physical contexts. First, we analyze the superconducting phase transition occurring near the Mott metal-insulator transition. Second, we study transport properties of artificial nano-scale structures containing quantum dots coupled to external electrodes. In both cases, we focus on the impact of the correlated (assisted) hopping (CH) interaction. For superconductors, CH acts as a driving mechanism for the phase transition and modifies the spectral properties of the system. We present the evolution of the spectral function as the system approaches the Mott-type transition under varying model parameters. In quantum-dot-based devices, CH influences the tunneling amplitude between the dot and metallic leads. We demonstrate that the characteristic changes in the conductance of a normal metal-quantum dot-normal metal structure provide a clear signature of the presence and sign of CH interaction.

Spatially modulated, orbital selective ferromagnetism in La$_5$Co$_2$Ge$_3$

We present density functional theory calculations for low-$T_c$ metallic ferromagnet La$_5$Co$_2$Ge$_3$ at ambient and applied pressures. Our investigations reveal that the system is a quasi-one-dimensional ferromagnet with a peculiar coexistence of two different orbital-selective magnetic moments at two crystallographically inequivalent cobalt atoms, Co1 and Co2. Namely, due to different crystal-field splitting, the magnetic moment of Co1 atoms predominantly derives from $d_{xz}$ orbital whereas of Co2 atoms from $d_{xy}$ orbital. Consequently, Co1 and Co2 atoms develop unequal net magnetic moments, a feature that gives rise to a periodic, spatial modulation of magnetization along crystallographic $c$-direction. The amplitude of the spatial modulation, small at ambient pressure, drastically increases with applied pressure, until Co2 atoms become nonmagnetic. With the help of a toy model mimicking found orbital-selective ferromagnetic order, we demonstrate that the increasing amplitude of spatial modulation provides a consistent interpretation to the recently observed resistivity anomaly emerging at applied pressure identified as the appearance of the {\it new state}. Although, proposed here structural origin of the spatial modulation of magnetic moments in La$_5$Co$_2$Ge$_3$ is an alternative one to the advocated for this material ferromagnetic quantum criticality avoidance, the effects of quantum fluctuations can still play an important role at pressure larger than up-to-date measured 5GPa.

Criticalities in the itinerant ferromagnet UGe$_{2}$

We provide a microscopic description of the magnetic properties of UGe$_2$ and in particular, of its both classical and quantum critical behavior. Namely, we account for all the critical points: the critical ending point (CEP) at the metamagnetic phase transition, the tricritical point, and the quantum critical end point at the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition. Their position agrees quantitatively with experiment. Additionally, we predict that the metamagnetic CEP can be traced down to zero temperature and becomes quantum critical point by a small decrease of both the total electron concentration and the external pressure. The system properties are then determined by the quantum critical fluctuations appearing near the instability point of the Fermi surface topology.

Tricritical wings in UGe$_2$: A microscopic interpretation

In the present work we analyze the second order transition line that connect the tricritical point and the quantum critical ending point on the temperature--magnetic-field plane in UGe$_2$. For the microscopic modeling we employ the Anderson lattice model recently shown to provide a fairly complete description of the full magnetic phase diagram of UGe$_2$ including all the criticalities. The shape of the so-called tricritical wings, i.e. surfaces of the first-order transitions, previously reported by us to quantitatively agree with the experimental data, is investigated here with respect to the change of the total filling and the Landé factor for $f$ electrons which can differ from the free electron value. The analysis of the total filling dependence demonstrates sensitivity of our prediction when the respective positions of the critical ending point at the metamagnetic transition and tricritical point are mismatched as compared to the experiment.

Ferromagnetism in UGe2 : A microscopic model

Anderson lattice model is used to rationalize the principal features of the heavy fermion compound UGe2 by means of the generalized Gutzwiller approach (the SGA method). This microscopic approach successfully reproduces magnetic and electronic properties of this material, in a qualitative agreement with experimental findings from the magnetization measurements, the neutron scattering, and the de Haas-van Alphen oscillations. Most importantly, it explains the appearance, sequence, character, and evolution in an applied magnetic field of the observed in UGe2 ferro- and, para-magnetic phases as an effect of a competition between the f-f electrons Coulomb interaction energy and f-conduction electrons kinetic energy (hybridization)
