Hyperbolicity and Rigidity for Fibred Partially Hyperbolic Systems

Every volume-preserving centre-bunched fibred partially hyperbolic system with 2-dimensional centre either (1) has two distinct centre Lyapunov exponents, or (2) exhibits an invariant continuous line field (or pair of line fields) tangent to the centre leaves, or (3) admits a continuous conformal structure on the centre leaves invariant under both the dynamics and the stable and unstable holonomies. The last two alternatives carry strong restrictions on the topology of the centre leaves: (2) can only occur on tori, and for (3) the centre leaves must be either tori or spheres. Moreover, under some additional conditions, such maps are rigid, in the sense that they are topologically conjugate to specific algebraic models. When the system is symplectic (1) implies that the centre Lyapunov exponents are non-zero, and thus the system is (non-uniformly) hyperbolic.

Measure-theoretical properties of center foliations

Center foliations of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms may exhibit pathological behavior from a measure-theoretical viewpoint: quite often, the disintegration of the ambient volume measure along the center leaves consists of atomic measures. We add to this theory by constructing stable examples for which the disintegration is singular without being atomic. In the context of diffeomorphisms with mostly contracting center direction, for which upper leafwise absolute continuity is known to hold, we provide examples where the center foliation is not lower leafwise absolutely continuous.

Geometric and measure-theoretical structures of maps with mostly contracting center

We show that every diffeomorphism with mostly contracting center direction exhibits a geometric-combinatorial structure, which we call \emph{skeleton}, that determines the number, basins and supports of the physical measures. Furthermore, the skeleton allows us to describe how the physical measure bifurcate as the diffeomorphism changes. In particular, we use this to construct examples with any given number of physical measures, with basins densely intermingled, and to analyse how these measures collapse into each other - through explosions of their basins - as the dynamics varies. This theory also allows us to prove that, in the absence of collapses, the basins are continuous functions of the diffeomorphism.

Absolute continuity, Lyapunov exponents and rigidity I : geodesic flows

We consider volume-preserving perturbations of the time-one map of the geodesic flow of a compact surface with negative curvature. We show that if the Liouville measure has Lebesgue disintegration along the center foliation then the perturbation is itself the time-one map of a smooth volume-preserving flow, and that otherwise the disintegration is necessarily atomic.

Physical Measure and Absolute Continuity for One-Dimensional Center Direction

For a class of partially hyperbolic $C^k$, $k>1$ diffeomorphisms with circle center leaves we prove existence and finiteness of physical (or Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen) measures, whose basins cover a full Lebesgue measure subset of the ambient manifold. Our conditions contain an open and dense subset of all $C^k$ partially hyperbolic skew-products on compact circle bundles. Our arguments blend ideas from the theory of Gibbs states for diffeomorphisms with mostly contracting center direction together with recent progress in the theory of cocycles over hyperbolic systems that call into play geometric properties of invariant foliations such as absolute continuity. Recent results show that absolute continuity of the center foliation is often a rigid property among volume preserving systems. We prove that this is not at all the case in the dissipative setting, where absolute continuity can even be robust.

The Entropy Conjecture for Diffeomorphisms away from Tangencies

We prove that every C1 diffeomorphism away from homoclinic tangencies is entropy expansive, with locally uniform expansivity constant. Consequently, such diffeomorphisms satisfy Shub's entropy conjecture: the entropy is bounded from below by the spectral radius in homology. Moreover, they admit principal symbolic extensions, and the topological entropy and metrical entropy vary continuously with the map. In contrast, generic diffeomorphisms with persistent tangencies are not entropy expansive and have no symbolic extensions.

Hyperbolic Dynamical Systems

The theory of uniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems was initiated in the 1960's (though its roots stretch far back into the 19th century) by S. Smale, his students and collaborators, in the west, and D. Anosov, Ya. Sinai, V. Arnold, in the former Soviet Union. It came to encompass a detailed description of a large class of systems, often with very complex evolution. Moreover, it provided a very precise characterization of structurally stable dynamics, which was one of its original main goals. The early developments were motivated by the problem of characterizing structural stability of dynamical systems, a notion that had been introduced in the 1930's by A. Andronov and L. Pontryagin. Inspired by the pioneering work of M. Peixoto on circle maps and surface flows, Smale introduced a class of gradient-like systems, having a finite number of periodic orbits, which should be structurally stable and, moreover, should constitute the majority (an open and dense subset) of all dynamical systems. Stability and openness were eventually established, in the thesis of J. Palis. However, contemporary results of M. Levinson, based on previous work by M. Cartwright and J. Littlewood, provided examples of open subsets of dynamical systems all of which have an infinite number of periodic orbits.

Simplicity of Lyapunov spectra: proof of the Zorich-Kontsevich conjecture

We prove the Zorich-Kontsevich conjecture that the non-trivial Lyapunov exponents of the Teichmüller flow on (any connected component of a stratum of) the moduli space of Abelian differentials on compact Riemann surfaces are all distinct. By previous work of Zorich and Kontsevich, this implies the existence of the complete asymptotic Lagrangian flag describing the behavior in homology of the vertical foliation in a typical translation surface.

Parameter exclusions in Henon-like systems

This survey is a presentation of the arguments in the proof that Henon-like maps f_a(x,y)=(1-a x^2,0) + R(a,x,y) with |R(a,x,y)|< b have a "strange attractor", with positive Lebesgue probability in the parameter "a", if the perturbation size "b" is small enough. We first sketch a "geometric model" of the strange attractor in this context, emphasising some of its key geometrical properties, and then focus on the construction and estimates required to show that this geometric model does indeed occur for many parameter values. Our ambitious aim is to provide an exposition at one and the same time intuitive, synthetic, and rigorous. We think of this text as an introduction and study guide to the original papers in which the results were first proved. We shall concentrate on describing in detail the overall structure of the argument and the way it breaks down into its (numerous) constituent sub-arguments, while referring the reader to the original sources for detailed technical arguments.
