Existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for systems with specification at a fixed scale

We consider the uniqueness of equilibrium states for dynamical systems that satisfy certain weak, non-uniform versions of specification, expansivity, and the Bowen property at a fixed scale. Following Climenhaga-Thompson's approach which was originally due to Bowen and Franco, we prove that equilibrium states are unique even when the weak specification assumption only holds on a small collection of orbit segments.

Uniqueness of equilibrium states for Lorenz attractors in any dimension

In this note, we consider the thermodynamic formalism for Lorenz attractors of flows in any dimension. Under a mild condition on the Hölder continuous potential function $ϕ$, we prove that for an open and dense subset of $C^1$ vector fields, every Lorenz attractor supports a unique equilibrium state. In particular, we obtain the uniqueness for the measure of maximal entropy.

An entropy dichotomy for singular star flows

We show that non-trivial chain recurrent classes for generic $C^1$ star flows satisfy a dichotomy: either they have zero topological entropy, or they must be isolated. Moreover, chain recurrent classes for generic star flows with zero entropy must be sectional hyperbolic, and cannot be detected by any non-trivial ergodic invariant probability. As a result, we show that $C^1$ generic star flows have only finitely many Lyapunov stable chain recurrent classes.

Classifying expanding attractors on figure eight knot complement space and non-transitive Anosov flows on Franks-Williams manifold

The path closure of figure eight knot complement space, $N_0$, supports a natural DA (derived from Anosov) expanding attractor. Using this attractor, Franks-Williams constructed the first example of non-transitive Anosov flow on the manifold $M_0$ obtained by gluing two copies of $N_0$ through identity map along their boundaries, named by Franks-Williams manifold. In this paper, our main goal is to classify expanding attractors on $N_0$ and non-transitive Anosov flows on $M_0$. We prove that, up to orbit-equivalence, the DA expanding attractor is the unique expanding attractor supported by $N_0$, and the non-transitive Anosov flow constructed by Franks and Williams is the unique non-transitive Anosov flow admitted by $M_0$. Moreover, more general cases are also discussed. In particular, we completely classify non-transitive Anosov flows on a family of infinitely many toroidal $3$-manifolds with two hyperbolic pieces, obtained by gluing two copies of $N_0$ through any gluing homeomorphism.

Entropy theory for sectional hyperbolic flows

We use entropy theory as a new tool to study sectional hyperbolic flows in any dimension. We show that for $C^1$ flows, every sectional hyperbolic set $Λ$ is entropy expansive, and the topological entropy varies continuously with the flow. Furthermore, if $Λ$ is Lyapunov stable, then it has positive entropy; in addition, if $Λ$ is a chain recurrent class, then it contains a periodic orbit. As a corollary, we prove that for $C^1$ generic flows, every Lorenz-like class is an attractor.

Measure-theoretical properties of center foliations

Center foliations of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms may exhibit pathological behavior from a measure-theoretical viewpoint: quite often, the disintegration of the ambient volume measure along the center leaves consists of atomic measures. We add to this theory by constructing stable examples for which the disintegration is singular without being atomic. In the context of diffeomorphisms with mostly contracting center direction, for which upper leafwise absolute continuity is known to hold, we provide examples where the center foliation is not lower leafwise absolutely continuous.

Cherry flow: physical measures and perturbation theory

In this article we consider Cherry flows on torus which have two singularities: a source and a saddle, and no periodic orbits. We show that every Cherry flow admits a unique physical measure, whose basin has full volume. This proves a conjecture given by R. Saghin and E. Vargas in~\cite{SV}. We also show that the perturbation of Cherry flow depends on the divergence at the saddle: when the divergence is negative, this flow admits a neighborhood, such that any flow in this neighborhood belongs to the following three cases: (a) has a saddle connection; (b) a Cherry flow; (c) a Morse-Smale flow whose non-wandering set consists two singularities and one periodic sink. In contrary, when the divergence is non-negative, this flow can be approximated by non-hyperbolic flow with arbitrarily larger number of periodic sinks.

Geometric and measure-theoretical structures of maps with mostly contracting center

We show that every diffeomorphism with mostly contracting center direction exhibits a geometric-combinatorial structure, which we call \emph{skeleton}, that determines the number, basins and supports of the physical measures. Furthermore, the skeleton allows us to describe how the physical measure bifurcate as the diffeomorphism changes. In particular, we use this to construct examples with any given number of physical measures, with basins densely intermingled, and to analyse how these measures collapse into each other - through explosions of their basins - as the dynamics varies. This theory also allows us to prove that, in the absence of collapses, the basins are continuous functions of the diffeomorphism.

Generic Continuity of Metric Entropy for Volume-preserving Diffeomorphisms

Let $M$ be a compact manifold and $\text{Diff}^1_m(M)$ be the set of $C^1$ volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of $M$. We prove that there is a residual subset $\mathcal {R}\subset \text{Diff}^1_m(M)$ such that each $f\in \mathcal{R}$ is a continuity point of the map $g\to h_m(g)$ from $\text{Diff}^1_m(M)$ to $\mathbb{R}$, where $h_m(g)$ is the metric entropy of $g$ with respect to volume measure $m$.

Physical Measure and Absolute Continuity for One-Dimensional Center Direction

For a class of partially hyperbolic $C^k$, $k>1$ diffeomorphisms with circle center leaves we prove existence and finiteness of physical (or Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen) measures, whose basins cover a full Lebesgue measure subset of the ambient manifold. Our conditions contain an open and dense subset of all $C^k$ partially hyperbolic skew-products on compact circle bundles. Our arguments blend ideas from the theory of Gibbs states for diffeomorphisms with mostly contracting center direction together with recent progress in the theory of cocycles over hyperbolic systems that call into play geometric properties of invariant foliations such as absolute continuity. Recent results show that absolute continuity of the center foliation is often a rigid property among volume preserving systems. We prove that this is not at all the case in the dissipative setting, where absolute continuity can even be robust.

Some results on perturbations to Lyapunov exponents

In this paper, we study two properties of the Lyapunov exponents under small perturbations: one is when we can remove zero Lyapunov exponents and the other is when we can distinguish all the Lyapunov exponents. The first result shows that we can perturb all the zero integrated Lyapunov exponents $\int_M λ_j(x)dω(x)$ into nonzero ones, for any partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism. The second part contains an example which shows the local genericity of diffeomorphisms with non-simple spectrum and three results: one discusses the relation between simple-spectrum property and the existence of complex eigenvalues; the other two describe the difference on the spectrum between the diffeomorphisms far from homoclinic tangencies and those in the interior of the complement. Moreover, among the conservative diffeomorphisms far from tangencies, we prove that ergodic ones form a residual subset.

The Entropy Conjecture for Diffeomorphisms away from Tangencies

We prove that every C1 diffeomorphism away from homoclinic tangencies is entropy expansive, with locally uniform expansivity constant. Consequently, such diffeomorphisms satisfy Shub's entropy conjecture: the entropy is bounded from below by the spectral radius in homology. Moreover, they admit principal symbolic extensions, and the topological entropy and metrical entropy vary continuously with the map. In contrast, generic diffeomorphisms with persistent tangencies are not entropy expansive and have no symbolic extensions.
