Two slope functions minimizing fractional seminorms and applications to misfit dislocations

We consider periodic piecewise affine functions, defined on the real line, with two given slopes and prescribed length scale of the regions where the slope is negative. We prove that, in such a class, the minimizers of $s$-fractional Gagliardo seminorm densities, with $0<s<1$, are in fact periodic with the minimal possible period determined by the prescribed slopes and length scale. Then, we determine the asymptotic behavior of the energy density as the ratio between the length of the two intervals where the slope is constant vanishes. Our results, for $s=\frac 1 2$, have relevant applications to the van der Merwe theory of misfit dislocations at semi-coherent straight interfaces. We consider two elastic materials having different elastic coefficients and casting parallel lattices having different spacing. As a byproduct of our analysis, we prove the periodicity of optimal dislocation configurations and we provide the sharp asymptotic energy density in the semi-coherent limit as the ratio between the two lattice spacings tends to one.

Convergence of supercritical fractional flows to the mean curvature flow

We consider a core-radius approach to nonlocal perimeters governed by isotropic kernels having critical and supercritical exponents, extending the nowadays classical notion of $s$-fractional perimeter, defined for $0<s<1$, to the case $s\ge 1$\,. We show that, as the core-radius vanishes, such core-radius regularized $s$-fractional perimeters, suitably scaled, $Γ$-converge to the standard Euclidean perimeter. Under the same scaling, the first variation of such nonlocal perimeters gives back regularized $s$-fractional curvatures which, as the core radius vanishes, converge to the standard mean curvature; as a consequence, we show that the level set solutions to the corresponding nonlocal geometric flows, suitably reparametrized in time, converge to the standard mean curvature flow. Finally, we prove analogous results in the case of anisotropic kernels with applications to dislocation dynamics. Stability results for nonlocal geometric evolutions and limit cases for fractional mean curvature flows

We introduce a notion of uniform convergence for local and nonlocal curvatures. Then, we propose an abstract method to prove the convergence of the corresponding geometric flows, within the level set formulation. We apply such a general theory to characterize the limits of $s$-fractional mean curvature flows as $s\to 0^+$ and $s\to 1^-$. In analogy with the $s$-fractional mean curvature flows, we introduce the notion of $s$-Riesz curvature flows and characterize its limit as $s\to 0^-$. Eventually, we discuss the limit behavior as $r\to 0^+$ of the flow generated by a regularization of the $r$-Minkowski content.

Vectorial crystallization problems and collective behavior

We propose and analyze a class of vectorial crystallization problems, with applications to crystallization of anisotropic molecules and collective behavior such as birds flocking and fish schooling. We focus on two-dimensional systems of "oriented" particles: Admissible configurations are represented by vectorial empirical measures with density in $\mathcal S^1$. We endow such configurations with a graph structure, where the bonds represent the "convenient" interactions between particles, and the proposed variational principle consists in maximizing their number. The class of bonds is determined by hard sphere type pairwise potentials, depending both on the distance between the particles and on the angles between the segment joining two particles and their orientations, through threshold criteria. Different ground states emerge by tuning the angular dependence in the potential, mimicking ducklings swimming in a row formation and predicting as well, for some specific values of the angular parameter, the so-called {\it diamond formation} in fish schooling.

The $0$-fractional perimeter between fractional perimeters and Riesz potentials

This paper provides a unified point of view on fractional perimeters and Riesz potentials. Denoting by $H^σ$ - for $σ\in (0,1)$ - the $σ$-fractional perimeter and by $J^σ$ - for $σ\in (-d,0)$ - the $σ$-Riesz energies acting on characteristic functions, we prove that both functionals can be seen as limits of renormalized self-attractive energies as well as limits of repulsive interactions between a set and its complement. We also show that the functionals $H^σ$ and $J^σ$\,, up to a suitable additive renormalization diverging when $σ\to 0$, belong to a continuous one-parameter family of functionals, which for $σ=0$ gives back a new object we refer to as {\it $0$-fractional perimeter}. All the convergence results with respect to the parameter $σ$ and to the renormalization procedures are obtained in the framework of $Γ$-convergence. As a byproduct of our analysis, we obtain the isoperimetric inequality for the $0$-fractional perimeter.

Existence and uniqueness for a crystalline mean curvature flow

An existence and uniqueness result, up to fattening, for a class of crystalline mean curvature flows with natural mobility is proved. The results are valid in any dimension and for arbitrary, possibly unbounded, initial closed sets. The comparison principle is obtained by means of a suitable weak formulation of the flow, while the existence of a global-in-time solution follows via a minimizing movements approach.

Ground states of a two phase model with cross and self attractive interactions

We consider a variational model for two interacting species (or phases), subject to cross and self attractive forces. We show existence and several qualitative properties of minimizers. Depending on the strengths of the forces, different behaviors are possible: phase mixing or phase separation with nested or disjoint phases. In the case of Coulomb interaction forces, we characterize the ground state configurations.

Nonlocal curvature flows

This paper aims at building a unified framework to deal with a wide class of local and nonlocal translation-invariant geometric flows. First, we introduce a class of generalized curvatures, and prove the existence and uniqueness for the level set formulation of the corresponding geometric flows. We then introduce a class of generalized perimeters, whose first variation is an admissible generalized curvature. Within this class, we implement a minimizing movements scheme and we prove that it approximates the viscosity solution of the corresponding level set PDE. We also describe several examples and applications. Besides recovering and presenting in a unified way existence, uniqueness, and approximation results for several geometric motions already studied and scattered in the literature, the theory developed in this paper allows us to establish also new results.

A Non-Local Mean Curvature Flow and its semi-implicit time-discrete approximation

We address in this paper the study of a geometric evolution, corresponding to a curvature which is non-local and singular at the origin. The curvature represents the first variation of the energy recently proposed as a variant of the standard perimeter penalization for the denoising of nonsmooth curves. To deal with such degeneracies, we first give an abstract existence and uniqueness result for viscosity solutions of non-local degenerate Hamiltonians, satisfying suitable continuity assumption with respect to Kuratowsky convergence of the level sets. This abstract setting applies to an approximated flow. Then, by the method of minimizing movements, we also build an "exact" curvature flow, and we illustrate some examples, comparing the results with the standard mean curvature flow.

Gradient integrability and rigidity results for two-phase conductivities in dimension two

This paper deals with higher gradient integrability for $σ$-harmonic functions $u$ with discontinuous coefficients $σ$, i.e. weak solutions of $÷(σ\nabla u) = 0$. We focus on two-phase conductivities, and study the higher integrability of the corresponding gradient field $|\nabla u|$. The gradient field and its integrability clearly depend on the geometry, i.e., on the phases arrangement. We find the optimal integrability exponent of the gradient field corresponding to any pair $\{σ_1,σ_2\}$ of positive definite matrices, i.e., the worst among all possible microgeometries. We also show that it is attained by so-called exact solutions of the corresponding PDE. Furthermore, among all two-phase conductivities with fixed ellipticity, we characterize those that correspond to the worse integrability.

A variational approach to the stationary solutions of Burgers equation

Consider the viscous Burgers equation on a bounded interval with inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. Following the variational framework introduced by Bertini-De Sole-Gabrielli-Jona-Lasinio-Landim C, we analyze a Lyapunov functional for such equation which gives the large deviations asymptotics of a stochastic interacting particles model associated to the Burgers equation. We discuss the asymptotic behavior of this energy functional, whose minimizer is given by the unique stationary solution, as the length of the interval diverges. We focus on boundary data corresponding to a standing wave solution to the Burgers equation in the whole line. In this case, the limiting functional has in fact a one-parameter family of minimizers and we analyze the so-called development by Gamma-convergence; this amounts to compute the sharp asymptotic cost corresponding to a given shift of the stationary solution.

Phase transitions and minimal hypersurfaces in hyperbolic space]

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the Cahn-Hillard approximation for entire minimal hypersurfaces in the hyperbolic space. Combining comparison principles with minimization and blow-up arguments, we prove existence results for entire local minimizers with prescribed behaviour at infinity. Then, we study the limit as the length scale tends to zero through a $Γ$-convergence analysis, obtaining existence of entire minimal hypersurfaces with prescribed boundary at infinity. In particular, we recover some existence results proved in M. Anderson and U. Lang using geometric measure theory.

Crack initiation in elastic bodies

In this paper we study the crack initiation in a hyper-elastic body governed by a Griffith's type energy. We prove that, during a load process through a time dependent boundary datum of the type $t \to t g(x)$ and in absence of strong singularities (this is the case of homogeneous isotropic materials) the crack initiation is brutal, i.e., a big crack appears after a positive time $t_i>0$. On the contrary, in presence of a point $x$ of strong singularity, a crack will depart from $x$ at the initial time of loading and with zero velocity. We prove these facts (largely expected by the experts of material science) for admissible cracks belonging to the large class of closed one dimensional sets with a finite number of connected components. The main tool we employ to address the problem is a local minimality result for the functional $$ \Es(u,Γ):=\int_\Om f(x,\nabla v) dx+k\hu(Γ), $$ where $Ω\subseteq \R^2$, $k>0$ and $f$ is a suitable Carathéodory function. We prove that if the uncracked configuration $u$ of $\Om$ relative to a boundary displacement $ψ$ has uniformly weak singularities, then configurations $(u_Γ,Γ)$ with $\hu(Γ)$ small enough are such that $\Es(u,\emptyset)<\Es(u_Γ,Γ)$.
