Donaldson Functional in Teichmüller Theory

In this paper we define a Donaldson type functional whose Euler-Lagrange equations are a system of differential equations which corresponds to Hitchin's self-duality equations for a suitable choice of Higgs bundle on closed Riemann surfaces. The main challenge of this functional is its lack of regularity and lack of compactness when defined in its natural domain of definition. Though a standard variational approach cannot directly be applied, we provide the appropriate analytical tools that make Donaldson functional treatable by a variational viewpoint. We prove that this functional admits a unique critical point corresponding to its global minimum. As an immediate consequence, we find that this system of self-duality equations admits a unique solution. Among the applications in geometry of this fact, we obtain a parametrization of closed constant mean curvature immersions in hyperbolic manifolds (possibly incomplete), and their moduli spaces.

Criticality theory for Schrodinger operators with singular potential

In a seminal work, B. Simon provided a classification of nonnegative Schrödinger operators $-Δ+V$ into subcritical and critical operators based on the long-term behaviour of the associated heat kernel. Later works by others developed an alternative subcritical/critical classification based on whether or not the operator admits a weighted spectral gap. All these works dealt only with potentials that ensured the validity of Harnack's inequality, typically potentials in $L^p_{loc}$ for some $p > \frac{N}{2}$. This paper extends such a weighted spectral gap classification to a large class of locally integrable potentials $V$ called balanced potentials here. Harnack's inequality will not hold in general for such potentials. In addition to the standard potentials in the space $L^p_{loc}$ for some $p > \frac{N}{2}$, this class contains potentials which are locally bounded above or more generally, those for which the positive and negative singularities are separated as well as those for which the interaction of the positive and negative singularities is not "too strong". We also establish for such potentials, under the additional assumption that $V^+ \in L^p_{loc}$ for some $p > \frac{N}{2}$, versions of the Agmon-Allegretto-Piepenbrink Principle characterising the subcritical/critical operators in terms of the cone of positive distributional super-solutions (or solutions). A compressed version of this work has appeared in the paper : M. Lucia and S. Prashanth, Criticality theory for Schrodinger operators with singular potential, J. Differential Equations 265(2018), 3400-3440. We also remove here some restrictions imposed in section 10.3 of this paper.

Ergodicity and spectral cascades in point vortex flows on the sphere

We present results for the equilibrium statistics and dynamic evolution of moderately large ($n = {\mathcal{O}}(10^2 - 10^3)$) numbers of interacting point vortices on the unit sphere under the constraint of zero mean angular momentum. We consider a binary gas consisting of equal numbers of vortices with positive and negative circulations. When the circulations are chosen to be proportional to $1/\sqrt{n}$, the energy probability distribution function, $p(E)$, converges rapidly with $n$ to a function that has a single maximum, corresponding to a maximum in entropy. Ensemble-averaged wavenumber spectra of the nonsingular velocity field induced by the vortices exhibit the expected $k^{-1}$ behavior at small scales for all energies. The spectra at the largest scales vary continuously with the inverse temperature $β$ of the system and show a transition from positively sloped to negatively sloped as $β$ becomes negative. The dynamics are ergodic and, regardless of the initial configuration of the vortices, statistical measures simply relax towards microcanonical ensemble measures at all observed energies. As such, the direction of any cascade process measured by the evolution of the kinetic energy spectrum depends only on the relative differences between the initial spectrum and the ensemble mean spectrum at that energy; not on the energy, or temperature, of the system.

The $p$-Royden and $p$-harmonic boundaries for metric measure spaces

Let $p$ be a real number greater than one and let $X$ be a locally compact, noncompact metric measure space that satisfies certain conditions. The $p$-Royden and $p$-harmonic boundaries of $X$ are constructed by using the $p$-Royden algebra of functions on $X$ and a Dirichlet type problem is solved for the $p$-Royden boundary. We also characterize the metric measure spaces whose $p$-harmonic boundary is empty.

Holomorphic Cubic Differentials and Minimal Lagrangian Surfaces in CH2

Following earlier work of Loftin-McIntosh, we study minimal Lagrangian immersions of the universal cover of a closed surface (of genus at least 2) into CH2, with prescribed data of a conformal structure plus a holomorphic cubic differential. We show existence and non-uniqueness of such minimal Lagrangian immersions. We also establish the surface area with respect to the induced metric as a Weil-Petersson potential function for the space of holomorphic cubic differentials on the Riemann surface.

Minimal immersions of closed surfaces in hyperbolic three-manifolds

We study minimal immersions of closed surfaces (of genus $g \ge 2$) in hyperbolic 3-manifolds, with prescribed data $(σ, tα)$, where $σ$ is a conformal structure on a topological surface $S$, and $αdz^2$ is a holomorphic quadratic differential on the surface $(S,σ)$. We show that, for each $t \in (0,τ_0)$ for some $τ_0 > 0$, depending only on $(σ, α)$, there are at least two minimal immersions of closed surface of prescribed second fundamental form $Re(tα)$ in the conformal structure $σ$. Moreover, for $t$ sufficiently large, there exists no such minimal immersion. Asymptotically, as $t \to 0$, the principal curvatures of one minimal immersion tend to zero, while the intrinsic curvatures of the other blow up in magnitude.
